Platinum Jubilee of Central Silk Board: Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh unveils Commemorative Coin 
On 20th September 2024, Union Minister Giriraj Singh, Ministry of Textile, unveiled the Commemoratory coin of the denomination Rs 75 during an event organised to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee(75th Anniversary) of the Central Silk Board (CBS) in Mysuru, Karnataka.
- The Union Minister also launched a Coffee Table Book titled CSB in the Service of the Nation Since 1949 and a postal cover featuring the CSB 75 Years Logo.
Histroy of Central Silk Board:
i.The CBS was established following the recommendations of the Silk Panel by the Imperial government on 8th March 1945 to examine the development of the silk industry.
ii.The Government of Independent India enacted the CSB Act 1948 on 20th September 1948.
iii.The CSB was established under an Act of Parliament (LXI) of 1948 on 9th April 1949.

PM Modi Dedicates 3 PARAM Rudra Supercomputers Worth Rs 130 Crore to Nation
On 26th September 2024, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi dedicated 3 ‘PARAM Rudra’ Supercomputers worth Rs 130 crore to the nation via video conferencing. These supercomputers are developed indigenously under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
- These supercomputers have been deployed in New Delhi(Delhi), Pune(Maharashtra) and Kolkata(West Bengal, WB) to provide pioneering scientific research.

i.These 3 new supercomputers have been deployed in Pune, Maharashtra), Delhi, National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi and Kolkata, West Bengal (WB), to provide pioneering scientific research.
ii.PM has also inaugurated a High-Performance Computing (HPC) system tailored for weather and climate research, acquired by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
- This project is developed with an investment of Rs 850 crore, marking a significant step in India’s computational capabilities for meteorological applications.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Launches ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ App
On 23rd September 2024, Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Ministry of Communications (MoC), and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam‘ mobile application (app) at the National Media Centre (NMC) in New Delhi(Delhi).
- This user-friendly app is a unique platform that allows users to plant a tree in honour of their mothers, contributing to environmental sustainability and a greener planet.
Key Features:
i.This is a unique platform that enable users to plant and dedicate a tree in honour of their mothers.
ii.The users can dedicate a tree by capturing a image of the tree and provide the details like tree type, location (state), and occasion for planting the tree.
iii.Users can also update tree growth every 30 days, allowing for continuous tracking.
iv.Users can track the carbon credits they have earned through their contributions.
Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam Campaign:
i.The Government of India (GoI) launched Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, a nationwide tree-plantation campaign on 5 June 2024 to commemorate World Environment Day (WED).
- The campaign was launched to tackle global warming by promoting large-scale tree planting, to protect the environment and nature.
ii.Objectives:
- To encourage people to plant a tree as a symbol of love, respect, and honou for their mothers;
- To Combat land degradation and restore degraded lands.
iii.The campaign has successfully planted 80 crore saplings, 5 days ahead of its September 2024 target.
Squadron Leader Mohana Singh Becomes 1st Woman Fighter Pilot in LCA Tejas Fighter Fleet
Squadron Leader Mohana Singh has become the 1st woman fighter pilot to join the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) 18 Flying Bullets squadron, which operates India’s indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fighter jets. The Flying Bullets squadron is stationed at Naliya Air Base in the Gujarat sector, along the border with Pakistan.
- Mohana Singh was among the first 3 female fighter pilots commissioned into the IAF in 2016, alongside Squadron Leaders Bhawana Kanth and Avani Chaturvedi.
- She made history as the first woman in the IAF to fly a “Hawk” aircraft during daylight hours in 2019.
- She was earlier part of the No 3 fighter squadron which is based at NAL Air Force Station, in Rajasthan. She was flying MiG-21 Bison as part of the No 3 squadron.
- She was honoured with the Naari Shakti Award in 2020, recognizing her achievements alongside Avani Chaturvedi and Bhawna Kanth.
Note: Since the fighter stream opened to women in 2016, the IAF now has around 20 women fighter pilots.
KVIC & NIFT Signed MoU under CoEK-2.0 to Enhance Marketability of Khadi Brand
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) under the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME), and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the ‘Centre of Excellence for Khadi-2.0(CoEK-2.0)’, to enhance the reach and marketability of “Brand Khadi” domestically and internationally, in Rajghat, New Delhi (Delhi).
- Signatories: The MoU was signed by Vatsalya Saxena, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), KVIC, and Tanu Kashyap, Director General (DG), NIFT in the presence of Manoj Kumar, Chairman, KVIC; S C L Das, Secretary, MoMSME and Vipul Goel, Joint Secretary, MoMSME.
- The MoU focuses on design innovation and capacity building. NIFT will assist Khadi institutions with training, designing Khadi garments, renovating Khadi Bhavans, and developing new high-quality Khadi products.
- Under COEK, NIFT will complete the process of establishing the Khadi hub center in New Delhi, and spoke centers in Bengaluru (Karnataka), Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Kolkata (West Bengal (WB)), Guwahati (Assam), Panchkula (Haryana), Hyderabad (Telangana), and Bhubaneswar (Odisha).
- KVIC will invest Rs 25.17 crore through COEK over the next 3 years to strengthen the quality and brand power of Khadi.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
India Formally Joined International Big Cat Alliance
On 20th September 2024, India formally joined International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) by signing and ratification of the Framework Agreement on the establishment of the IBCA.
- IBCA is a global initiative founded by India to secure the future of big cats and their natural habitats.
- The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved the proposal of India to become a member of IBCA.
- With this, 4 countries (India, Nicaragua, Eswatini and Somalia) have now become member of IBCA.
Key People:
The framework agreement was handed over to Dr. S.P. Yadav, Interim Director General (DG), IBCA by Ramesh Kumar Pandey, Inspector General (IG) Forests, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in New Delhi, Delhi.
About IBCA:
i.IBCA was launched by PM Modi during the programme “Commemoration of 50 years of India’s Project Tiger” on 9th April 2023 at Mysuru University in Mysuru, Karnataka.
ii.The framework Agreement aimed to establish IBCA to collectively address common challenges for the protection and conservation of 7 big cats – Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and the Cheetah.
- Except, Puma and Jaguar, 5 of these big cats are found in India.
iii.IBCA aims to build a multi-nation, multi-agency coalition of 95 big cat range countries, non-range countries interested in big cat conservation.
iv.This initiative is open for all United Nations (UN) member countries who are interested in becoming the member of the IBCA.
v.Under the framework agreement, member parties will be guided by the principals of coordinated action for protection and conservation of 7 big cats, seeking the benefits of collective action under the IBCA.
vi.The IBCA will set up networks and develop synergies in a focused manner so as to bring a common platform, a centralised repository of successful practices that can be used to strengthen the conservation practices, and can help in preventing the decline of big cat population and reverse the trend.
Key Progress:
i.In February 2024, the Union Cabinet had approved the establishment of IBCA with headquarters in India with one-time budgetary allocation of Rs 150 crores for a period of 5 years from 2023-24 to 2027-28.
ii.So far, 24 countries (including India) have consented to be members of IBCA. Apart from them, 9 International Organisations have also consented to be partner organisation of IBCA.

Axis AMC Launched India’s 1st NBFC Sector-based Target Maturity Mutual Fund Scheme
Axis Asset Management Company Limited (Axis AMC) launched “AXIS CRISIL-IBX AAA NBFC Index– Jun 2027 Fund”, An open-ended Target Maturity Index Fund investing in constituents of CRISIL-IBX AAA NBFC Index – Jun 2027.
- This is the 1st Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) sector-based target maturity mutual fund scheme in India.
- The fund offers a moderate interest rate risk and relatively low credit risk.
- The New Fund Offer (NFO) for the scheme is open for subscription till 23rd September 2024 and the maturity date of the scheme is 30th June 2027.
i.The minimum investment amount required for the scheme is Rs 5,000 and in multiples of Re 1 thereafter.
ii.The new fund will offer exposure to high-quality, AAA-rated NBFCs through a passive investment strategy by monitoring an index.
iii.The scheme will allocate 95% to 100% of its assets to fixed-income instruments attached to the index, with a small portion reserved for liquidity through debt and money market instruments.
iv.The fund will follow a ‘Buy-and-hold’ investment strategy which means that debt instruments issued by NBFCs will be held until maturity unless sold to meet redemptions or for rebalancing purposes.
v.The fund will be managed by Aditya Pagaria, Fund Manager-Fixed Income at Axis AMC.

Shigeru Ishiba set to become the New Prime Minister of Japan
On 27 September 2024, Former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba (67 years old) is set to become the next Prime Minister(PM) of Japan after being elected as the leader of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which holds a majority in the parliament.
- He will assume PM office from October 1, 2024 by replacing incumbent PM Fumio Kishida.
- Shigeru Ishiba won by 215 votes, defeating Sanae Takaichi(194 votes), in the leadership election of the LDP in Tokyo, Japan. Nine candidates including two women had competed in the elections.
About Shigeru Ishiba
i.Shigeru Ishiba is an idealistic reformer and had worked in a bank before joining politics.
ii.He won his first parliamentary election in 1986 with LDP. This year was his fifth attempt to become the leader of LDP, which is the largest party in parliament and has been ruling Japan for most of the past seven decades.
iii.He served as the Minister of Defense from 2007 to 2008, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries from 2008 to 2009, and the Secretary-General of the LDP from 2012 to 2014.
iv.He also served as the chairman of LDP’s Policy Research Council from 2009 to 2011 and its secretary-general from 2012 to 2014.

Tennis: India’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan & Vijay Sundar Prashanth won the doubles title at Hangzhou Open 2024
Indian Tennis players Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth won the men’s doubles title by defeating Germany’s Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens in the finals of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) 250 Hangzhou Open (2024).
- Marin Cilic of Croatia won the Men’s singles title by defeating China’s Zhang Zhizhen. This marks his first tour level title since 2021.
- Hangzhou Open 2024 was held from 18th to 24th September 2024 at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Expo Center in Hangzhou, China.
Points to note:
i.This marks the duo’s first ATP Tour title together as a pair.
ii.This marks the first ever ATP title for Vijay Sundar and 2nd career title for Jeevan.
- Jeevan won his first ATP doubles title at the 2017 Chennai Open (Tamil Nadu) paired with Rohan Bopanna.
iii.With this win, Marin Cilic became the lowest-ranked tournament winner in ATP Tour history at No. 77.

India claims bronze medal in 1st Asia Pacific Padel Cup in Bali, Indonesia
The Indian team bagged the bronze medal by defeating Malaysia in the first edition of the Asia Pacific Padel Cup(APPC)2024 which was held at Amare Padel Club Umalas, Bali, Indonesia, from September 19th to 22nd , 2024.
- India has claimed this spot in its first-ever tournament appearance and also the first-ever padel competition between nations held in the Asia Pacific region.
- Indonesia won the gold medal followed by the Philippines winning the silver medal in the tournament.

i. Aryan Goveas and Rahul Motwani started strong in the bronze medal match against Malaysia, winning 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
- Followed by Tulsi Mehta and Vaibhavi Deshmukh made it 2-0 for India with 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory, and the girls’ pairing of Jenai Billimoria and Johan Fernandes secured 6-0, 6-1 win.
ii.The Indian team was led by the Spanish head coach Victor Perez along with coach Imran Yusoof and manager Rithik Sinha.
What is Padel?
i.It is a racquet sport with Mexican origin that is played in an enclosed court, like squash, that is slightly smaller than a doubles tennis court in size.
ii.The racquets are of solid material but the balls similar to tennis balls are of a little less pressure.
iii. Every match between the two teams has doubles matches. The height of the ball while service must be at or below the waist level.
About Asia Pacific Padel Cup(APPC):
i.This was the 1st edition of the APPC tournament.
- The competition will begin with a round-robin phase, followed by a playoff to determine the final rankings.
ii.Each match will be played between two countries, with each country represented by five teams(3 male teams and 2 female teams).
iii.Nations participated in the event – Hong Kong (China), India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.
Scotland Agreed to Host 2026 Commonwealth Games after Australia Backed Out
Glasgow, the capital of Scotland, has been announced as the host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games(CWG) after Australian state of Victoria decided to withdraw from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to projected exceeding expenditures.
Glasgow is set to host the games for the 2nd time in 12 years. The city previously hosted the event in 2014.
The Commonwealth Game Federation (CGF) pledged to provide financial of 100 million pounds and also the United Kingdom (UK) government agreed to financial support.
About CWG:
i.It is a quadrennial international multisport event among athletes from the Commonwealth nations. The 1st CWG was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
ii.So far, India hosted the CWG only once in 2010 in New Delhi, Delhi.

The United Nations (UN)’s World Maritime Day(WMD) is annually observed across the globe on the last Thursday of September to celebrate the importance of maritime activities and to recognise the contribution of the maritime industry towards global development.

- The theme of World Maritime Day 2024 is “Navigating the future: safety first!”.
- The annual observance of WMD is led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

i.The World Maritime Day was first celebrated on 17th March 1978, to mark the date of the IMO Convention’s entry into force in 1958.
ii.Since 1978, the WMD has been celebrated across the globe during the last Thursday of September.
