ICC Approves New Playing Conditions for International Cricket from July 2025In June 2025, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) based International Cricket Council (ICC) approved several important changes to the playing conditions for men’s international cricket, covering both red-ball (Test matches) and white-ball formats (One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 (T20) matches) to enhance game flow, fairness, and tactical balance.
- While some rules have already been implemented during the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–2027 cycle, other rules will come into effect from July 2, 2025.
1. Stop Clock Mandated in Test Cricket
The stop clock rule, introduced earlier in white-ball formats to tackle slow over-rates, will now be applied in Test cricket. Under this regulation:
i.The fielding side must begin a new over within 60 seconds after the previous over ends.
ii.If they fail to comply, they will receive two warnings.
iii.A third failure will result in a five-run penalty awarded to the batting team.
iv.The two warnings will reset to zero after every 80 overs.
Note: This rule has already been enforced in the ICC WTC 2025–2027.
2.ODI Ball Usage Revised
i.Two new balls will continue to be used for the first 34 overs of an innings. From the 35th over, the fielding team selects one ball (the better-conditioned one) for the remaining 16 overs.
ii.This rule change aims to encourage reverse swing, particularly in the final overs, and to create a fairer balance between the bat and ball during the death overs.
3.Penalty for Deliberate Short Runs
If a batter deliberately fails to make their ground to attempt an extra run:
i.The batting side will face a five-run penalty, which already existed under the previous rule.
ii.Additionally, the fielding team will now have the right to decide which batter remains on strike.
4.Boundary Catch Clarification
Fielders who touch the ball while airborne beyond the boundary must:
i.Touch the ball only once while they are in the air outside the field.
ii.Land completely inside the boundary to complete a legal catch.
