STATE NEWS

Kozhikode Declared Official Flower, Bird, Animal, Tree, and Other Biodiversity Symbols In May 2025, A.K. Saseendran, Minister of Forest and Wildlife Protection of Kerala, announced that Kozhikode district in Kerala became the first district in the state to officially declare its emblematic species across eight biodiversity categories under the 2024-25 Annual Plan of the District Panchayat, following a participatory biodiversity survey.

  • The initiative was led by Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) based Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB), an autonomous body under Kerala State Environment Department (KSED), after receiving nominations from the public through local-level consultations led by Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs)
  • The announcement was made in observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22nd May 2025.

Biodiversity Symbols of Kozhikode:
The officially designated species are:
i.District Flower: Athirani (Melastoma malabathricum)
ii.District Bird: Menipponman (Ceyx erithaca), also known as Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher
iii.District Butterfly: Malabar Rose (Pachliopta pandiyana)

ii.This initiative also shows Kerala’s commitment to protecting 25% of India’s plant species and safeguarding unique wildlife.
About Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB):
KSBB was established in 2004 under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, the Biodiversity Rules, 2004, and the Kerala State Biological Diversity Rules, 2008. Initially, KSBB functioned under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE), but after the formation of the Environment Department in 2006, it was officially transferred under the new department.
