Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates India’s First Maritime NBFC, Sagarmala Finance Corporation LimitedOn 26th June 2025, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW),  inaugurated Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited (SMFCL), India’s first Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) in the maritime sector.

  • The event was also attended by Union Minister of State(MoS) Shantanu Thakur, MoPSW and TK Ramachandran, Secretary of MoPSW.
  • During this event multiple tech initiatives including the SAGAR SETU platform, the Digital Centre of Excellence (DCoE) with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), and the DRISHTI monitoring framework were launched by the Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to boost efficiency and productivity in a major maritime digital push.

About Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited(SMFCL):
i.New Delhi(Delhi) based SMFCL, formerly known as Sagarmala Development Company Limited, is now positioned to play a transformative role in India’s maritime infrastructure development, in alignment with the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
ii.It is Mini Ratna, Category-I, Central Public Sector Enterprise(CPSE) that has been formally registered as NBFC with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
iii.The purpose of the sector specific NBFC is to bridge financing gaps in the maritime sector and catalyse economic growth.

10 Years of AMRUT: A Decade of Urban Transformation in IndiaOn June 25 2025, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), a transformative initiative of Government of India (GoI), has completed 10 years of successful implementation.

  • Launched by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the mission aims to improve the quality of life in urban cities by ensuring access to basic services like water supply, sewerage, urban transport, and parks.

i.AMRUT mission has covered 500 selected cities and towns across the country (now, 485 cities including 15 merged cities).
ii.Key components of AMRUT  mission are: capacity building, reform implementation, water supply, sewerage and septage management, storm water drainage, urban transport, and the development of green parks/spaces.
iii.Total 14,828 projects worth Rs 2,73,649 crore have been sanctioned under AMRUT  and AMRUT 2.0, of which works worth nearly Rs 1, 12,368 crore have been physically completed.
iv.Under both AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0, total 2.03 crore tap connections and 1.50 crore sewer connections have been provided.

  • So far, 544 water bodies rejuvenated, covering 9,511 acre area.

NHAI Developed India’s First Wildlife Corridor on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan
In June 2025, the New Delhi (Delhi) based National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) developed India’s first dedicated wildlife corridor on a national highway (NH), a 12-kilometre (km) stretch of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway passing through the buffer zone of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Bundi district, Rajasthan, aimed at balancing infrastructure development with wildlife conservation.

  • The project was developed in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

i.It is located in the ecologically sensitive region of Rajasthan, between the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve and the Chambal Valley, which is known for its rich biodiversity.
ii.Five wildlife overpasses, each 500 metres (m) long, and India’s longest wildlife underpass of 1.2 km were constructed to ensure safe passage for large mammals.
iii.Nearly 5 km of the expressway were constructed either elevated or sunken to preserve natural topography.
iv.A boundary wall of 4m and sound barriers of 2m were installed to prevent wildlife intrusion and minimise noise pollution.
v.The corridor includes eco-friendly features such as the plantation of around 35,000 trees, rainwater harvesting systems every 500m, drip irrigation that cuts water use by over 50%, and sustainable construction using modular formwork and low-waste methods.

MoHUA Launched ‘SABB Campaign’ Under Swachh Bharat Mission
On 26 June 2025, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched the “Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao” (SABB) campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0(SBM-U). This month-long monsoon sanitation drive, running from July 1 to 31, 2025 across all Urban Local Bodies(ULB) in India, aims to tackle health risks associated with clogged drains, stagnant water, and garbage hotspots to prevent water-borne and vector-borne diseases.

  • The campaign is being implemented in collaboration with key central ministries and departments, including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD), and the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education (MoE).

i.The campaign promotes preventive cleanliness, public hygiene, and community engagement, especially in vulnerable areas like slums, schools, and high-footfall public places.
ii.Encouraging citizens to follow the 6 mantras of SABB: Clean Hands, Clean Homes, Clean Neighbourhood, Clean Toilets, Clean Drains and Waterbodies, and Clean Public Spaces.
iii.Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) in 100 Smart Cities will clean public spaces using Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs).

Kerala’s Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary Become India’s First Butterfly SanctuaryIn June 2025, the Kerala State Wildlife Board officially renamed the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Kannur district(Kerala), as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, making it India’s first protected forest dedicated exclusively to butterflies. This decision recognizes the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity and promotes eco-tourism.

  • The renaming strengthens butterfly conservation efforts and positions the sanctuary as a global biodiversity hotspot.

Key Points:
i.The recognition follows 25 years of continuous butterfly surveys led by the Kozhikode (Kerala) based Malabar Natural History Society (MNHS), in collaboration with the Kerala Forest Department.
ii.In 2024, during the 25th consecutive butterfly survey camp, the MNHS submitted a detailed report advocating for the sanctuary’s upgrade to a butterfly-focused protected area.
About Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary:
i.The sanctuary, established in 1984, spans 55 square kilometres(sq.km) and is situated within the tropical and semi-evergreen forests of the Western Ghats.
ii.It hosts over 266 butterfly species, which accounts for more than 80% of Kerala’s butterfly population.

  • It also hosts 27 endemic species and six that are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972

iii.A notable record was made at Kuruckathodu(Kerala), where over 12,000 Common Albatross butterflies were recorded within five minutes in the survey of 2025.
iv.The sanctuary also serves as an important stopover for the seasonal migration of Common Albatross butterflies from December to February.

Union Minister Amit Shah Addressed ‘Golden Jubilee Celebration’ of the DoL
On 26 June 2025, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Cooperation (MoC), addressed the “Golden Jubilee Celebration” (50 years) of Department of Official Language (DoL) in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • Several dignitaries, including Chief Minister (CM) of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, Minister of State (MoS) Bandi Sanjay Kumar, MHA were also present.

i.Union Minister Amit Shah highlighted, “Hindi Shabdsindhu” is a dynamic repository of vocabulary developed to standardize and enrich the Hindi language by incorporating commonly used words from various languages, thereby making Hindi more flexible and widely acceptable for official use.
ii.He stated that the Department’s 50-year journey (1975–2025) contributes to the revival of India’s cultural self-respect by promoting governance in Indian languages.
iii.DoL is an independent department under the MHA, with a view to ensuring compliance with the constitutional and legal provisions regarding official language.
iv.Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag is a newly established division aimed at supporting States and Central Government bodies in enhancing the use of Indian languages in administrative functions, thereby promoting linguistic inclusivity in governance.

World Bank, IAEA Signed Agreement to Collaborate on Nuclear Energy for Safe DevelopmentOn 26th June 2025, the World Bank (WB) group and United Nations nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed an agreement to support the safe, secure and responsible use of nuclear energy in developing countries.

  • The agreement was signed by the WB president Ajay Banga and IAEA director general Rafael Mariano Grossi.

Key Points
i.As per the agreement, the IAEA will work with the WB in the following 3 key areas:

  • Build knowledge related to the nuclear field: Expand the WB Group’s understanding of nuclear safety, security, safeguards, energy planning, new technologies, fuel cycles, reactor lifecycles, and waste management.
  • Extend the lifespan of existing nuclear power plants: Support developing countries in safely extending the life of existing nuclear reactors-one of the most cost-effective sources of low-carbon power-as many global reactors near the end of their original 40-year design life.
  • Advance SMRs: Accelerate the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), which offer flexible deployment, lower upfront costs, and potential for wide adoption in developing economies.

The Netherlands Hosted NATO Summit from June 24 to 25, 2025In June 2025, the Netherlands hosted the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Summit 2025at the World Forum in its capital city, The Hague from June 24 to June 25, 2025.

  • This was for the 1st time since the formation of NATO in 1949 that the Netherlands hosted a NATO summit.

Key Highlights of NATO Summit:
NATO adopted new 5% GDP Defence Spending Target at The Hague Summit:
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced that NATO countries have agreed to increase defence spending to 5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) annually. This announcement was made following 32 member countries unanimously voted in favor of it during the NATO Summit 2025.

  • All member countries of NATO are expected to achieve this new spending target over the next 10 years (by 2035).
  • The trajectory balance of spending under this new target will be reviewed in 2029.

UN Launched ‘UN80 Initiative’ to Reform Global Governance 
The United Nations (UN) has launched the ‘UN80 Initiative’, led by Secretary-General António Guterres, to reform and modernize the organization as it approaches its 80th anniversary.

  • The Initiative aims to streamline UN operations by reducing administrative redundancies, enhancing the implementation of mandates from Member States, and restructuring programmes across the UN system to improve global effectiveness.

The UN80 Initiative is mainly focused on three key areas of work.
i.Efficiency and Cost Reduction: Focuses on reducing bureaucratic procedures, eliminating duplication, and relocating functions from high-cost hubs like New York(the Unites States of America, USA) and Geneva(Switzerland), while leveraging automation and digital solutions to streamline operations.
ii.Mandate Implementation Review: Reviews over 3,600 active mandates from more than 40,000 issued by UN bodies, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics to assess their relevance, overlap, and effectiveness, with final decisions resting with UN Member States.
iii.Structural Reforms: Evaluates the structure of over 140 UN entities to merge overlapping functions, improve coordination, and consolidate programmes, with outcomes feeding into the 2026 Revised Programme Budget and the 2027 Programme Budget.
iv.UN80 Task Force: Chaired by Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Policy, coordinates seven thematic clusters covering peace and security, development, humanitarian action, human rights, training and research, and specialized agencies.

UNEP Launches NDC Cooling Guidelines 2025On June 23, 2025, Nairobi (Kenya) based United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the ‘Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Cooling Guidelines 2025’ to help countries to integrate cooling measures into both adaptation and mitigation pathways.

  • The guidelines were launched alongside the 62nd session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Bodies (SB 62), which took place from June 16 to 26, 2025, in Bonn, Germany.

NDC Cooling Guidelines 2025:
i.The NDC Cooling Guidelines offer a six-stage, step-by-step framework, supported by country case studies, to help policymakers assess hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and energy-related emissions, set sector-specific targets, and develop fully costed National Cooling Action Plans (NCAPs).
ii.The goal is to reduce emissions from cooling, which currently account for about 7% of global GHG, by nearly 60% by 2050.
iii.The guidelines emphasize Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), Kigali-compliant refrigerant phase-down, passive and nature-based solutions, as well as climate-responsive urban planning.
iv.These actions are underpinned by cross-ministerial coordination, a robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system to track progress, and a strong focus on expanding equitable access.

PhonePe, HDFC Bank Launched Co-branded RuPay Credit Card with UPI Integration
In June 2025, Bengaluru (Karnataka) based PhonePe Limited (Formerly PhonePe Private Limited), one of India’s leading fintech companies, in partnership with Mumbai (Maharashtra) based HDFC Bank Limited launched the ‘PhonePe HDFC Bank Co-branded Credit Card’ on the RuPay network.

  • This new offering supports Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-linked credit payments and also marks the entry of PhonePe into the co-branded credit card segment.

i.The card integrates directly with UPI, which enables users to make payments through UPI Quick Response (QR codes) using their limit.

  • This unique feature aimed to expand credit access and enhance user experience for millions of digital-first consumers.

ii.The new co-branded credit card is available in two variants namely, ‘Ultimo’ and ‘UNO’. These variants are designed to offer rewards across daily spending, especially through UPI transactions on the PhonePe application (app).
iii.Users can apply for the card online, and once approved, HDFC Bank will issue and activate it. The card will be launched in phases.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

ICRA Retains India’s FY26 GDP Forecast at 6.2%
In June 2025, Gurugram (Haryana) based Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA) retained its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for the Financial Year (FY) 2025-26 at 6.2% in the June Macroeconomic Update, which is lower than the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) estimate of 6.5%.

  • ICRA has forecasted the inflation to be moderate, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) projected at 3.5% for FY26, which is lower than 4.6% in FY25 and also lower than the Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC’s) forecast of 3.7%.

i.The early onset of monsoons in May 2025 negatively impacted the electricity and mining sectors. Despite this, the output of summer crops is expected to grow at a healthy pace, and the agricultural Gross Value Added (GVA) is projected to rise by approximately 4.5% in Q1 FY 2026.

  • For the full FY26, the agricultural GVA is projected to be 3.5-4.0 %, assuming a normal monsoon

ii.The economic activity in the first two months of Quarter 1 (Q1) (April – June 2025) FY 2026 has shown a mixed trend, with only nine of seventeen non-agricultural indicators improving compared to Q4 FY2025 (January-March 2025)
iii.ICRA cautioned, elevated global risks, especially tensions in West Asia, Volatile global financial markets, and uncertainty around tariff policies could act as significant headwinds.

Zou Jiayi Elected as AIIB’s First Woman PresidentIn June 2025, Zou Jiayi, former Vice Finance Minister of China, was elected President of the Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) during its 10th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors. She will assume the role for a five-year term starting January 16, 2026.

  • She will succeed Jin Liqun, the founding President of the AIIB, becoming the AIIB’s second President and its first-ever female leader.

About Zou Jiayi:
i.Zou Jiayi is an experienced leader with over three decades of experience in global finance policy at the highest levels.
ii.She joined the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Republic of China, in 1988 and held roles across international departments.
iii.From 1996 to 2009, she served as China’s Executive Director(ED) and Alternate ED at Washington, United States of America (USA) based World Bank.
iv.She was moved to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) in 2015. She served as Vice Minister of Supervision from 2017 to 2018 and CCDI Standing Committee Member.

  • She was nicknamed the “tiger-fighter” for her role in high-profile anti-corruption efforts.

ICG Inducted 1st FPVAdamya under 08 FPV Project at GSLOn 26th June 2025, the New Delhi (Delhi)-based Indian Coast Guard (ICG) inducted Yard 1271 ‘Adamya‘, the first Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) under the 08 FPV Project, at Vasco da Gama (Goa)-based Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), marking a boost to India’s maritime security and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

  • FPVs are high-speed, agile maritime platforms used by the ICG for coastal surveillance and patrolling, equipped with advanced navigation, communication, and surveillance systems for rapid maritime response.

About FPV Adamya:
i.‘Adamya’ is entirely designed and built by GSL, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
ii.It is the first ship in its class within the ICG fleet to be equipped with Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs) and indigenously developed gearboxes.
iii.It will play a vital role in coastal surveillance, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
iv.Over 60% of its components are indigenous, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiatives.
Technical Features:
i.Equipped with a 30 millimetre (mm) Close Range Naval-91 (CRN-91) gun and two 12.7mm stabilized remote-control guns integrated with a fire control system.
ii.Includes state-of-the-art systems such as:

  • Integrated Bridge System (IBS)
  • Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS)
  • Automated Power Management System (APMS)

iii.These technologies enhance operational flexibility, precision, and responsiveness in maritime operations.
About 08 FPV Project :
i.Launched in March 2022, the 08 FPV Project aims to construct eight FPVs for the ICG, with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) as the builder.
ii.As of June 2025, five vessels have been launched under the project—Adamya (Yard 1270) in October 2024, Akshar (Yard 1271) also in October 2024, Amulya (Yard 1272) and Akshay (Yard 1273) in January 2025, and Achal (Yard 1274) on 16th June 2025.

  • Of these, Adamya is the first and only vessel commissioned into active service so far.

Italy’s iRonCub3 Becomes World’s First Jet-Powered Flying Humanoid Robot
In June 2025, the world’s first jet-propelled humanoid robot, iRonCub3, developed by the Genoa (Italy) based Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), has lifted off the ground by about 50 Centimetre (Cm) and remained stable for the entire duration, as a breakthrough in humanoid robotics.

  • The iRonCub3 project aims to develop a multi-modal humanoid robot with jet-powered flying and walking abilities to assist in search and rescue operations in disaster-affected or hard-to-reach areas.

i.The IIT worked with two expert teams to develop iRonCub3. One team, led by Alex Zanotti at the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DAER), Milan (Italy), helped to carry out wind tunnel tests. Another team, led by Gianluca Laccarino at Stanford University, California,United State of America (USA), developed deep learning algorithms to study the robot’s aerodynamics.
ii.iRonCub3 is a 70-kilogram(Kg) humanoid robot equipped with four miniature jet engines two on the arms and two on a back-mounted jetpack.
iii.The goal of this model is to send robots into disaster zones or dangerous areas, minimizing risks to human lives. The total duration of the project is two years.
iv.The test paves the way for the future development of flying robots that can work like humans. A team of scientists analyzed the robot’s complex aerodynamics and created an advanced control system for managing its interconnected parts.

Safran Establishes Rafale Engine MRO Facility in Hyderabad
In June 2025, Paris (France) based aerospace major Safran Group announced the establishment of Safran Aircraft Engine Services India in Hyderabad (Telangana). This entity will specialize in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) of M88 engines powering the Dassault Rafale fighter jets operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

  • The MRO announcement came after Dassault Aviation, Rafale’s manufacturer, signed four agreements with Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) to locally produce the entire fuselage of the fighter jet.
  • This will be the first M88 engine MRO facility established outside France.

i.This facility will support the IAF’s current Rafale jets and the upcoming Rafale Marine aircraft, for which India signed a deal with France in April 2025 to buy 26 jets, with deliveries set between 2028 and 2030.
ii.The facility is expected to start by the end of 2026. It will also begin Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion(LEAP) engine MRO services before the end of 2025.
iii.Safran Aerospace currently runs two manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad: Safran Electrical & Power India, which produces electrical harnesses for CFM LEAP engines and Rafale jets, and Safran Aircraft Engines Hyderabad, which manufactures rotating components for the LEAP engine’s low-pressure turbine.

India Won 3 Gold Medals at 2nd Asian Squash Doubles Championships 2025 in MalaysiaIn June 2025, India won three gold medals in the categories of men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles at the 2nd edition of the Asian Squash Doubles Championships 2025, held at Arena Emas, Kuching, Malaysia, marking India’s first-ever clean sweep in both Asian and World Doubles Squash Championships.

  • The 2nd Asian Squash Doubles Championships 2025 was organized by the Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)-based Asian Squash Federation (ASF).

Key Highlights:
i.Men’s Doubles: India’s top-seeded duo, Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar, successfully defended their title by defeating Pakistan’s Noor Zaman and Nasir Iqbal 2-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-5) in the final, which lasted 88 minutes.

  • The Indian pair had entered the final after defeating Hong Kong’s Chi Him Wong and Ming Hong Tang in the semi-final.

ii.Women’s Doubles: The Indian duo of Joshna Chinappa and Anahat Singh, seeded second, defeated Malaysia’s top-seeded pair Ainaa Amani and Yee Xin Ying 2-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-10) in a closely fought 35-minute final.

  • They reached the final after beating Hong Kong’s Po Yui Kirstie Wong and Yee Lam Toby Tse.

iii.Mixed Doubles: Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh won the mixed doubles title, defeating Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold and Ameeshenraj Chandaran in straight sets 2-0 (11-9, 11-7) in a 28-minute final.

  • The Indian duo entered the final after overcoming another Malaysian pair, Ainaa Amani and Syafiq Kamal, in the semi-finals.
  • Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh both secured two gold medals each at the tournament.

Indian Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan Debuts as Author, Pens Memoir
On 26 June 2025, Former Indian Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has debuted as an author with his memoir, “The One: Cricket, My Life and More”, in which he has shared about his professional life as a cricketer, as a champion player and his personal life.

  • The book is published by Gurugram (Haryana) based HarperCollins India.

i.In his book, Shikhar has shared his journey from Delhi streets to global stardom. And also ultimate memoir with raw honesty, covering his rise, setbacks, relationships, controversies, and reflections beyond cricket.
ii.Shikhar Dhawan started as a wicket keeper and later transitioned into an opening batsman. He played 34 test matches for India, scoring 2,315 runs, including 7 centuries. He made his test debut in 2013 against Australia.
iii.He made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 2010 against Australia and represented until 2022. He has played 167 matches, scoring 6,793 runs including 17 centuries. He debuted in Twenty-20 International (T20I) against West Indies in 2011. He played 68 matches, scoring 1,759 runs.
iv.Shikhar Dhawan was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2021 for his excellence in cricket and exceptional leadership. He was also honoured as the Humanitarian of the Year (2021) at the Double Helical National Health Awards for his contributions to COVID-19 relief efforts. Additionally, he was named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year (2014), one of the most prestigious recognitions in international cricket.

  • On 27 June 2025, the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MoMSME), Government of India (GoI) commemorated MSME Day 2025 with a high-profile event, Udyami Bharat – MSME Day’, held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi. The event was presided over by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

Background:
i.On 6th April 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/71/279 to officially recognise 27th June every year as World Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day.
ii.The first World MSME Day was observed on 27th June 2017.

International Day of Deafblindness 2025 – June 27 The first ever United Nations(UN’s) International Day of Deafblindness was observed on June 27,2025 to promote global awareness about deafblindness, a distinct disability that involves a combined loss of vision and hearing, which creates unique challenges in communication, mobility, and access to information.

  • The day takes place within Deafblind Awareness Week (June 23–29, 2025), a worldwide campaign that highlights both the challenges faced and the accomplishments of the deafblind community.
  • Deafblind International Awareness Week 2025 (June 23–29) is themed “Cultivating Leadership: Together, We Grow.”

Background:
i.The Awareness Week began in 1984, proclaimed by former United States of America(USA) President Ronald Reagan. The observance of this day traces back to the adoption of the “Declaration on the Rights of Deaf-Blind Persons” in 1989 in Sweden.
ii.After years of global advocacy, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/79/294 on 16 June 2025, officially designating 27 June as the International Day of Deafblindness, in honour of the 145th birth anniversary of Helen Keller.
