Australia Invests USD 16 Million to Strengthen Economic Ties with IndiaOn February 26, 2025, The government of Australia unveiled a new roadmap to expand its economic partnership with the Government of India(GoI) by launching the `Australia-India Trade and Investment Accelerator Fund (TIAF)’ with an investment of USD 16 million. This initiative aims to boost trade, enhance bilateral investments, and strengthen collaboration between businesses in both nations.

  • The strategy highlights four key “superhighways of growth” where Australia has a competitive advantage: clean energy, education and skills, agribusiness, and tourism. 

Key Points:
i.The initiative aims to enhance cooperation in key sectors such as defence, sports, culture, space, and technology, reinforcing mutual economic resilience.
ii.Additionally, an extra USD 4 million will be allocated to expand the Maitri (Friendship) Grants Program, which aims to strengthen business, cultural, and people-to-people relations between Australia and India.
iii.The roadmap was developed based on extensive consultations across every Australian state and territory, as well as key stakeholders in India.
iv.The initiative seeks to produce long-term economic benefits for both countries by encouraging increased collaboration and investment, as well as assisting firms in navigating India’s dynamic and expanding market.
v.India is expected to become the third-largest economy by 2030; therefore, the strategy also aligns with India’s economic direction.  Australia is working to strengthen links with India’s businesses and communities in recognition of the enormous trade and investment potential.

DPIIT & Paytm Signs MoU to Promote India’s Manufacturing & Fintech Startups
On February 26, 2025, The New Delhi(Delhi) based Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India (GoI), Ministry of Commerce and Industry(MoC&I), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Paytm(Pay Through Mobile) owned by the Uttar Pradesh based One97 Communications Limited to promote innovation and accelerate the growth of fintech and manufacturing startups in India.

  • The MoU was signed by Dr. Sumeet Kumar Jarangal, Director, DPIIT, and Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Paytm, and in the presence of senior officials from both organizations.

i.The partnership aims to assist fintech hardware entrepreneurs in developing and scaling payment and financial technology solutions by providing them with innovation guidance and mentorship.
ii.It also provides regulatory and compliance support through workshops and guidance in collaboration with industry and government entities.
iii.The agreement also provides infrastructure and market access support, allowing businesses to test, validate, and enhance their products while leveraging Paytm’s enormous merchant network.
iv.Additionally, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm, Paytm Foundation nurtures deep-tech startups in Climate Tech, Web3, Agritech, and Mobility.

Indian Army signs MoU with L&T for ACADA systems
In February 2025, New Delhi based Indian Army (IA) signed a contract with Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited for procurement of 223 Automatic Chemical Agent Detection and Alarm (ACADA) systems for Rs 80.43 Crore, under the Buy Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured (Indian-IDDM) category, with over 80% of components and subsystems sourced locally, supporting the Atmanirbharta initiative.

  • ACADA was designed and developed by the Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh (MP)  based Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE) of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • It marks a significant milestone in India’s indigenization effort in the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) domain.

i.The ACADA system detects chemical warfare agents (CWA) and programmable toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) by monitoring the air in the area.
ii.It is based on the Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) principle and includes two highly sensitive IMS cells for continuous detection and monitoring of harmful/toxic chemicals.
iii.The use of ACADA in the field units will significantly improve the IA’s defensive CBRN capability for both operations and peacetime, particularly for responding to industrial accident-related disaster relief situations.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

India’s C-CAMP & France’s PariSanté Campus Partners to Establish Indo French Life Sciences Sister Innovation HubIn February 2025, Bengaluru (Karnataka) based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T), Government of India (GoI), and PariSanté Campus, a leading digital health innovation cluster in France signed an agreement to launch a bilateral innovation collaboration in the healthcare domain called the Indo French Life Sciences Sister Innovation Hub.

  • The Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed by Dr. Taslimarif Saiyed, Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of C-CAMP, and Professor Antoine Tesnière, Director of PariSanté Campus.
  • Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi, and President of France, Emmanuel Macron formally announced this partnership during the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit 2025 which was held from February 10-11,2025 at the Grand Palais in Paris, France.

Key Points:
i.The program intends to promote healthcare research and innovation by combining expertise from both countries.
ii.The focus areas have been established to provide specific solutions to public health issues across different regions. This collaboration aims to increase the linkages between research institutes, academia, and businesses.
iii.The Letter of Intent (LoI) between C-CAMP and PariSanté Campus for Indo-French Life Sciences Sister Innovation Hub will bring together the top innovation hubs from both countries to work together on two critical areas: One Health and Digital Health.
iv.The agreement aims to support research and innovation bilaterally, indicating a significant step toward greater collaboration between the two nations in tackling global healthcare issues.

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport among Top 10 Busiest Global Airports in 2025; Dubai International Airport Tops: OAGIn February 2025, Luton (the United Kingdom, UK)-based air consultancy firm Official Airline Guide (OAG) released its latest report about World’s Busiest Airport in 2025. As per the report, Delhi Airport (DEL), named Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi (Delhi) ranked at 8th spot, among the top 10 busiest airports globally as of February 2025.

  • DEL has had registered the highest capacity growth in February 2025 as against the same month in 2024, with number of seats increasing by 3.4% to 3.6 million seats.

i.Dubai (the United Arab Emirates, UAE)-based Dubai International Airport (with airport code: DXB) continues to be the busiest airport in the world with 4.8 million seats, marking an increase of 1% in capacity compared to February 2024.
ii.Also, the United States of America (USA)-based Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) continues to be world’s 2nd busiest airport globally in 2025, with 4.6 million seats, registering an increase of 2% in terms of capacity over the last year.
iii.The United Kingdom (UK)-based London Heathrow Airport (LHR) has retained its position has Europe’s busiest airport, and ranked at 5th spot globally in 2025 with 3.85 million seats.

ADB Approves USD 200 Million Loan to Expand Urban Services in Kolkata On 26 February 2025, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a USD 200 million loan to improve the development of climate and disaster-resilient sewerage and drainage infrastructure in Kolkata,West Bengal with the aim of enhancing Kolkata’s livability.

  • The loan agreement was part of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Sustainability, Hygiene, and Resilience (Sector) Project (KSHARP).
  • Kolkata, one of India’s most populous and highly populated cities, faces severe issues due to poor drainage and sewerage systems, which result in urban flooding and an unsanitary atmosphere.

About KSHARP
i.The project includes

  • 84 Kilometers(km) of trunk and secondary sewerage & drainage pipelines
  • 176 km of lateral sewerage & drainage pipelines, connecting homes
  • 50,000 new domestic sewer connections
  • Construction of one sewage treatment plant
  • Five new pumping stations to prevent waterlogging

ii.Improving Health and Safety

  • This project will enhance living conditions and health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children, by lowering exposure to waterborne and vector-borne diseases and mitigating flood risks.
  • Additionally, the project will assist Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in developing a comprehensive IT-based asset management system, increasing property tax revenue, expanding an earlier ADB intervention’s early flood warning system, raising community awareness on water, sanitation, and hygiene, and promoting women’s employment through skill training and internship programs.

SIDBI signs MoU with TCL to Strengthen Financing Avenues for MSMEs
In February 2025, Lucknow(Uttar Pradesh,UP) based  Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and Mumbai(Maharashtra) based Tata Capital Limited (TCL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Partnership for financing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

  • The MoU was signed by Vivek Kumar Malhotra, Chief General Manager (CGM), SIDBI, and Vivek Chopra, Chief Operating Officer (COO), of Retail Finance, TCL, and in the presence of senior officials from SIDBI and TCL.

i.The partnership aims to strengthen the MSME ecosystem by providing funding for machinery and equipment financing, working capital, Cash Credit (CC), Overdraft (OD), business loans, and loans against property, etc.
ii.Additionally, risk sharing, co-lending, and joint financing will be investigated while providing credit facilities to MSMEs.

MFIN: Micro-credit Disbursements Decline 35.8% to Rs 22,091 crore in Q3FY25In February 2025, Gurgaon(Haryana) based Microfinance Institution Network (MFIN) India, an umbrella body of the Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), released 52nd edition of Mirometer for Q3FY24-25 report. The report revealed that disbursement of microfinance loans has decreased 35.8% to Rs 22,091 crore during the 3rd Quarter (Q3: October-December) of Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25) compared with the year-ago period.

  • The Gross Loan Portfolio (GLP) of the sector as of December 31, 2024, stood at Rs 3,85,348 crore.
  • The report showed that the total loan portfolio in the micro-finance sector has decreased by 3.5% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) to Rs 3.85 trillion during Q3FY25.Also, the number of new loans disbursed registered a negative growth of 29.02%.

i.As on December 31 2024, the Assets Under Management (AUM) of the MFIs stood at Rs 1,42,695 crore, reflecting a decrease of 0.1% against Q3FY24 and 6.5% on a sequential basis.
ii.As per the report, the average loan amount disbursed per account during Q3FY25 was Rs 51,691 crore, showing an increase of 15.2% compared to the same quarter of FY24.
iii.The report revealed that Portfolio At Risk (PAR), defined as unpaid loans of more than 30 days, has decreased to 8.8% as on December 31, 2024, as against 3.5% registered with the year ago-period.

INOX India Becomes 1st to Earn IATF 16949 Certification for Cryogenic Fuel Tanks
In February 2025, Vadodara (Gujarat) based INOX India Limited (Inox India and Cryogenic Vessel Alternatives, INOXCVA) became the first Indian manufacturer of cryogenic equipment to receive the ‘International Automotive Task Force (IATF) 16949 Certification’ for cryogenic fuel tank production.

  • This certification, granted by Bureau Veritas Certification (BVC), covers both the design and manufacturing processes of vacuum-insulated cryogenic fuel tanks at INOX India’s Kalol facility in Gujarat.
  • This achievement, positions INOX India Limited as a pioneer in integrating cryogenic technology with automotive applications, in the growing  Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fuel tank sector in India.

i.The IATF 16949 certification is a mandatory requirement for automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) suppliers, ensuring adherence to high-quality management standards in the automotive industry.
ii.IATF 16949 is a vital quality management standard, based on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001, specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the automotive industry.
iii.INOX India Limited, a leading manufacturer of cryogenic storage, re-gas, and distribution systems for LNG, industrial gases, and cryo-scientific applications, operates in India, Brazil, and Europe.

Chairman of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran was Appointed as Chairman of RTEF
On 25 February 2025, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, was appointed as the Chairman of the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), a Section 8 entity established by the late Ratan Tata.

  • The executors of Ratan Tata’s will, including Darius Khambata, Mehli Mistry, Shireen, and Diana Jejeebhoy, sought external legal advice before appointing Chandrasekaran.

i.Chandrasekaran will finalize the staff to run the foundation and regulate its management structure shortly.
ii.However, it may take up to six months for Ratan Tata’s will to go through all the formalities and be approved by the Bombay High Court before his wealth is distributed.
iii.The Foundation is dedicated to philanthropy and technological research to benefit Indian society.
iv.Notably, Noel Tata, the Chairman of Tata Trusts, will not be part of the RTEF board.

CCI Approves PRHCL’s Acquisition of Fujitsu General for USD 1.6 Billion
In February 2025, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved Nagoya (Japan) based Paloma Rheem Holdings Company Limited’s (PRHCL) proposal to acquire Japanese air-conditioner maker Fujitsu General for USD 1.6 billion.

  • Fujitsu General will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Paloma Rheem Holdings following approval.

i.Fujitsu General specializes in air conditioning (A/C) solutions for the home, commercial, and industrial markets and related IT systems and devices
ii.The company sells A/C under the O General brand and conducts business in India through its subsidiary Fujitsu General (India).
iii.CCI has approved the acquisition under the green channel route under Section 6(4) of the Competition Act, 2002, read with Rule 3 of the Competition (Criteria of Combination) Rules, 2024.

  • Green channel is a mechanism of automatic approval whereby a combination that does not pose a significant risk of a negative impact on competition is considered approved by the CCI once the parties involved file a notice for the combination.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

DRDO & IN Successfully Conducted Flight Trials of First-of-its-KindNASM-SR in OdishaIn February 25, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Indian Navy (IN), successfully conducted flight trials of first-of-its-kind, indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile Short Range (NASM-SR). 

  • The tests were carried out at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) located at Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, with the missile launched from the Indian Navy’s (IN) Sea King 42B Helicopter.
  • This missile will replace the Sea Eagle missiles which are currently in use with the IN.

Key Features :
i.Man-in-Loop Capability: The NASM-SR demonstrated its Man-in-Loop feature, allowing human intervention during the missile’s operation.
ii.LOAL: The missile was launched in Bearing-only Lock-on after Launch (LOAL) mode, initially guided by a broad target direction, then precisely hit a smaller target.
iii.Precision Strike: The missile successfully targeted and hit a small ship at its maximum range of 50 kilometers (km) while operating in sea-skimming mode.

SpaceX Successfully Launched 3rd Moon Landing Mission with Athena LanderIn February 2025, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) successfully launched 3rdmoon landing mission of 2025 named ‘Intuitive Machines (IM-2)’ mission carrying Athena lander, Nova-C class robotic lunar lander of Houston, Texas (the United States of America, USA)-based Intuitive Machines  Inc., onboard the Falcon 9 rocket from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

  • 15-feet tall (4.7 meters (m))Athena lander is expected to land on Mons Mouton, a flat-topped mountain some 160 kilometers (kms) from moon’s South Pole on March 6, 2025.

i.It is a crucial part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and Artemis program.
ii.The Athena lander aboard 3-foot (1 m) drone Grace,  named after the late computer programming pioneer Grace Hopper, which will attempt various test hops before venturing into the crater (an estimated 65 ft deep).

Renowned Gujarati Poet and Sahitya Akademi Awardee Anil Ramanath Joshi Passes Away
On February 26, 2025, Renowned Gujarati Poet, essayist, and Sahitya Akademi Awardee Anil Ramanath Joshi passed away in Mumbai (Maharashtra). He was born on 28th July 1940 in Gondal (Gujarat).

  • In 1990, he was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati literature for his insightful essay collection, ‘Statue.

About Anil Ramanath Joshi: 
i.Anil Ramanath Joshi’s literary journey began in 1970 with the publication of his first Gujarati poetry collection, Kadach. He further enriched Gujarati poetry with Baraf Na Pankhi, a collection of poems, in 1982. In 1988, he also published Pavan Ni Vyaspithe, a collection of Essays.
ii.He also authored a collection of children’s stories and fables titled Chakli Bole Chi Chi Chi.His collection of essays, Pavan ni Vyaspitha, was also chosen for the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990.
iii.However, on October 11, 2025, he returned the 1990 Sahitya Akademi award as a protest against the increasing attacks on literary writers.

Oscar-Winning Actor Gene Hackman Passed AwayOn 26 February 2025, Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Gene Hackman passed away at the age of 95 in New Mexico, the United States of America (USA). He was born on 30 January 1930 in San Bernardino, California, the USA.

  • He won his first Oscar award in 1971 for Best Actor in the movie ‘The French Connection’ by William Friedkin and won another Oscar award for Best Supporting Actor in the movie ‘Unforgiven’, directed by Clint Eastwood, in 1992.

i.Gene Hackman is known for his powerful performances and a career spanning over four decades.
iHe began his career in the United States Marine Corps before acting.
iii.Earlier in his acting career, he worked on television shows such as “Route 66” and “Naked City,” improvisational theatre, and Broadway comedies.
iv.He starred in more than 100 films, including Lex Luthor in the Superman films of the 1970s and 1980s.
v.He has appeared in popular films like Runaway Jury, The Conversation, and The Royal Tenenbaums. His final significant film appearance was as Monroe Cole in Welcome to Mooseport in 2004.
vi.He won two British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, four Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

  • He was also nominated for Oscars for his performances in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), I Never Sang for My Father (1970), and Mississippi Burning (1988).
