Jarosite: A Natural Geological Clock for Mars Exploration
In May 2025, Indian researchers investigated Jarosite, a rare iron-potassium sulfate mineral found in the arid Kachchh region of Gujarat, confirming its potential as a natural geological clock for Mars exploration.

  • It is typically formed in acidic and saline environments and is commonly associated with acid mine drainage, oxidized ore deposits, and glacial or clay-rich terrains.

i.Jarosite is a yellow-brown hydrous sulphate mineral composed of potassium (K), ferric iron (Fe³⁺), and sulphate (SO₄) with the chemical formula KFe₃(SO₄)₂(OH)₆.
ii.It is a hydrous sulfate mineral with a trigonal crystal structure, a hardness of 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, a dark yellow to yellow-brown color, thermal stability up to 450°C, and is formed by the oxidation of iron sulfides like pyrite, serving as the iron analogue of alunite.
iii.Researchers collected six jarosite vein samples from Kachchh and analyzed their luminescence properties in a laboratory.

  • Luminescence refers to the light emitted by minerals when they release energy stored from natural radiation over time.

iv.The study found that jarosite grains became saturated with radiation doses between 590 and 2,600 gray, demonstrating their ability to record geological events accurately.
Note: Notably, jarosite has been previously identified on Mars by NASA’s rovers Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity, signaling the past existence of acidic and oxidizing conditions on the Martian surface.
