Jyotiraditya M Scindia Inaugurates Heli Summit 2023 by Launching UDAN 5.2 & HeliSewa appShri Jyotiraditya M Scindia inaugurates Heli Summit 2023On 25th July 2023, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated the 5th Helicopter & Small Aircraft Summit (Heli Summit 2023) in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.

  • During the event Scindia launched Regional Connectivity Scheme  UDAN(Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik,) 5.2 (RCS UDAN 5.2) and HeliSewa app.

i.UDAN 5.2 for small aircraft (by awarding 22 routes) and for helicopters (by increasing the VGF and reducing the fare cap) has been launched.
ii.HeliSewa is a single window service platform by the initiative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation under Digital India to develop a common platform by creating an ecosystem between the helicopter operators and the district authorities.
iii.A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pawan Hans Ltd. and Jet Serve Aviation Pvt. Ltd. was signed for advancing the Helicopter and Small Aircraft sector in India.

President Droupadi Murmu Completes One Year in Office; Lays Foundation Stones/inaugurates Various Projects at Rashtrapati BhavanPresident Murmu Completes One Year in OfficeOn 25th July 2023, the President of India Droupadi Murmu completed one year in the office as the 15th President of India. On the occasion, she laid the foundation stone and inaugurated various projects at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, Delhi.
Background: 
i.On 25th July 2022, Droupadi Murmu, the candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was sworn in as the 15th President of India.
ii.The Oath of office was administered by then Chief Justice of India(CJI) Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana(NV Ramana).

  • She became the first person from a tribal community and the 2nd woman after Pratibha Patil to hold the office of President, the highest constitutional post of India.
  • Elected at the age of 64, she became the youngest person to hold the post. She was also India’s first President born in Independent India.

About Droupadi Murmu: 

  • Born in a Santali tribal family in  Mayurbhanj, Odisha on June 20, 1958.
  • In 2015, Murmu became the first woman governor of Jharkhand.

ii.Inaugurated ‘Sutra-kala Darpan’, a Textile Collection of Rashtrapati Bhavan, featuring antique textiles that document the building’s illustrious legacy.
iii.Inaugurated ‘Janjatiya Darpan’ a gallery showcasing the art, culture, and contributions of various tribal communities in building the nation. The gallery displays various themes and artifacts in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts (IGNCA) (under the Ministry of Culture), New Delhi, Delhi.

World Bank Approves Bank of Israel’s Membership to Join the ICCRBank of Israel joins the International Committee on Credit reportingThe World Bank on June 2023 issued an official approval for the Bank of Israel to join the International Committee on Credit Reporting (ICCR), a permanent structure of the World Bank, constituting a unique worldwide committee on credit reporting.
Background:
i.Since November 2022, the World Bank has taken internal steps to approve the Bank of Israel’s membership to the ICCR.
ii.Voting was held among the Committee members at the winter meeting of the ICCR in November 2022 and it was decided unanimously to approve the Bank of Israel’s accession as a member of the ICCR.
About International Committee on Credit Reporting ICCR:
i.The World Bank (WB) with the support from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) created and coordinated the ICCR in 2009.
ii.ICCR is the only recognized international standard setter and guideline issuer on credit reporting, which includes representatives of central banks around the world and private financial regulators.
iii.It supports a broad, forward-looking, approach to issues in the world of credit reporting, achieving agreements regarding policy aspects that affect the public interest.
iv.It sets out recognized international credit reporting standards with regard to credit reporting and credit data sharing, which can be implemented by the member countries.
Responsibilities of ICCR:
The Committee is responsible to:

  • Further develop the international agreed framework in its general principles
  • Identify areas of further consideration and
  • Dedicate resources to the elaboration of papers, reports, guidelines and other relevant materials that will effectively support the adequate implementation of the General Principles.

Canara Bank Leads PSBs in Lending with Rs 187,813cr to State PSUs & Corp.; TN holds Highest DebtCanara Bank, major lender to State PSUs and corporations for fifth year in a rowi.According to the Parliamentary Questions and Answers data (Lok Sabha) on Outstanding Debt of States and Union Territories (UTs), Canara Bank topped the list of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) with the highest lending of Rs 187,813 crore in FY23 to Corporations and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) of States and Union Territories (UTs) for the 5th consecutive time.
ii.This information was revealed in a written statement by the Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance, on July 24, 2023, in response to questions raised by Member of Parliament (MP), Velusamy P.
iii.Out of the 12 PSBs, 10 reduced their lending to PSBs in FY23. Only two banks viz. Canara Bank and Central Bank of India, increased their exposure in FY23.
iv.Canara Bank’s lending to State-run PSUs and corporations alone accounted for over 45% of the total lending of all PSBs.
Tamil Nadu has highest Outstanding Debt in India
As per the RBI’s ‘State finances: A study of budgets of 2022-23’ report published in 2023, Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman shared data on outstanding liabilities, highlighting that Tamil Nadu(TN) has the highest amount of outstanding debt among all States and Union Territories in India, at Rs 7.54-lakh crore (as per bu dget estimates for FY23).

RBI Sets Restrictions on Bengaluru based National Co-operative Bank
On 24th July 2023, Reserve Bank of India(RBI) imposed business limitations on Bengaluru’s one of the oldest banks, National Co-operative Bank Limited because of its poor declining financial condition.

  • Starting from July 24, 2023, the business restrictions will be in place for a duration of six months and are subject to review.
  • The restrictions are imposed under the provision of  the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • Depositors will be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount up to Rs 5 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation(DICGC)

Restriction imposed:
i.Withdrawal limit is capped at Rs.50,000 per account
ii.The RBI also prohibited the bank from renewing loans, engaging in investments, creating liabilities, processing payments, or accepting fresh deposits.
Note: The imposition of business limits does not lead to the termination of the banking license. The bank will continue to operate within these limits until its financial status improves.

i.In May 2023, the National Co-operative Bank was levied with a monetary penalty by the RBI, citing regulatory infractions.

  • The bank  charged fixed penalties (rather than penalties appropriate to the extent of the failure) for customers’ failing to maintain a minimum balance in their savings bank accounts.

ii.In January 2020, the RBI had conducted an inspection in Sri Guru Raghavendra Sahakara Bank and identified discrepancies in its loan book and an escalation in non-performing assets (NPAs), leading to the imposition of restrictions on the bank.

IMF WEO July 2023 Update projects Indian Economy Growth at 6.1% in 2023IMF projects Indian economy to grow at 6.1% in 2023On July 25, 2023, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its ‘July 2023 World Economic Outlook (WEO) Update- Near-Term Resilience, Persistent Challenges’  projected a growth rate of 6.1% for India in 2023, which is a 0.2 percentage point upward revision compared with the April 2023 projection of 5.9%.

  • This shows a stronger-than-expected growth in the Q4 of 2022 driven by robust domestic investment.
  • For 2024, it remained at 6.3%, as projected in April 2023 WEO Update. India grew at 7.2% in 2022.

Note: In this update, for India, data and projections are presented on a fiscal year basis, with FY 2022-23 (starting in April 2022).

  • As per Calendar Year, India’s growth projections are 6.6% in 2023 and 5.8% in 2024.

The Global Scenario:
i.The global growth is projected to fall at 3% in both 2023 and 2024 from an estimated 3.5% in 2022.
ii.Global headline inflation is projected to fall to 6.8% in 2023 and 5.2% in 2024 from 8.7% in 2022.
iii.The global recovery is slowing amid increased dissimilarity among economic sectors and regions.
iv.The forecast for 2023 is modestly higher than predicted in the April 2023 WEO, however, it remains weak by historical standards.
v.The outlook projected the moderation of adverse risk globally as the United States (US) debt ceiling standoff, and strong action by authorities to contain turbulence in US and Swiss banking which reduced the immediate risks of financial sector turmoil.
Regional Highlights:
i.On the regional front, Emerging market and Developing Economies will grow at 4% in 2023, and 4.1% in 2024.
ii.Emerging and Developing Asia will grow at 5.3% in 2023, and 5% in 2024.

  • China and India are part of this region.

KSUM & IFSCA Signs MoU to Support Fintech and Techfin firmsKerala Startup Mission signs pact with IFSCA to bolster fintech startupsKerala Startup Mission(KSUM) and the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for stronger support to budding fintech and techfin firms through increased capital and a wider global network in the next three years.

  • The MoU was signed between KSUM Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Anoop Ambika and IFSCA Chief Technology Officer Joseph Joshy at the Integrated Startup Complex in Kalamassery, Kerala.

Highlights of the MoU:
i.The MoU seeks input relating to the fintech industry and collaborate on  global hackathons, education programs.
ii.The MoU allows KSUM & IFSCA to hold symposia, webinars, and conferences for the growth of fintech at IFSC in GIFT (Gujarat International Financial Tec-City) of Gandhinagar, Gujarat to know about the global trend.
iii.As per the MoU, KSUM-registered fintechs

receives Asia Pacific cultural heritage award from UNESCOOn 24th July 2023, India’s oldest railway station (169-years-old) Byculla railway station in central Mumbai, Maharashtra received the 2022 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation (Award of Merit). The award was presented by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways.

  • The recognition comes after 5 years of restoration activities of the railway station started in 2018
  • The award was announced in November, 2022.

Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik has Become the 2nd Longest-Serving CM in India
On 22nd July 2023, Odisha Chief Minister (CM) & Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president, Naveen Patnaik has become the 2nd longest-serving Chief Minister in India, with a tenure of 23 years and 139 days.

  • Patnaik, the five-time Chief Minister of Odisha, took charge on March 5, 2000.

Key points:
i.Patnaik surpassed the record set by former West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu who holds office for 23 years 137 days from June 21, 1977, to November 5, 2000.
ii.Pawan Kumar Chamling, the former CM of Sikkim, holds the 1st position as the longest-serving CM after independence in India. Chamling held the office of CM for 24 years and 166 days from December 12, 1994 to May 27, 2019.
iii.Naveen Patnaik is also the 3rd CM after Pawan Chamling and Jyoti Basu to win five consecutive terms as CM.

Pixxel Wins the iDEX Prime (Space) Grant to Develop Miniaturized Multi-Payload Satellites for IAFPixxel wins grant for manufacturing miniaturized multi-payload satellites for IAFPixxel, a Bengaluru(Karnataka)-based private space data company, won a multi-crore grant from the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) under the Ministry of Defence(MoD) for the Mission DefSpace Challenge under iDEX Prime (Space), to manufacture miniaturised multi-payload satellites for the Indian Air Force (IAF).This was received as a part of the SPARK (Support for Prototype and Research Kickstart (in Defence)) grants by iDEX.
Benefits of the Grant:
i.Under the grant from iDEX, Pixxel will develop small satellites of up to 150 kilograms (Kgs) for Electro-Optical, Infrared (IR), Synthetic Aperture Radar and Hyper Spectral purposes.
ii.Pixxel will utilize its expertise of building microsatellites in-house to manufacture satellites externally for the first time.
About Mission DefSpace:
i.Mission DefSpace, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during DefExpo in October, 2022 with 75 Defence Space Challenges relevant to the end users.
ii.The challenges are classied into 5 buckets: launch system, satellite system, communication and payload system, ground system, and software system.
iii.The mission aims to encourage technology development in space for defence applications by startups and young entrepreneurs through various initiatives of MoD, including iDEX.
Aim of the Grant:
To develop technologies, addressing each and every stage of a space mission from mission planning and manufacturing to satellite data analytics and more.
SPARK Grants:
The SPARK grants offered to select start-ups through the iDEX (Prime) and Defence India Start-up Challenges (DISC), intended to promote innovation by empowering Indian innovators and entrepreneurs in India.
Note: Pixxel emerged as the winner of the grant due to its outstanding pioneering technology in the area of hyperspectral satellite manufacturing.
Key Points:
i.This grant marks the entry of Pixxel into the defence sector and will now manufacture small satellites for the Indian Defence sector.
ii.Pixxel as a leading innovator in the space tech sector, building and launching made in India and the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral imaging satellites of earth at daily frequencies.
iii.Pixxel has launched commercial hyperspectral imaging satellites that provide earth-imaging services to its customers that include contract for supplying technical hyperspectral imagery to the United States of America (USA)’s National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Tennis: India’s Sumit Nagal wins Men’s Singles Tampere Open 2023Sumit Nagal wins Tampere Open 2023, his fourth ATP Challenger titleOn 23rd July 2023, Indian Tennis Player Sumit Nagal won Men’s Singles title of the Tampere Open 2023 by defeating Dalibor Svrcina of Czech Republic in Tampere, Finland.

  • This marks Sumit Nagal’s fourth Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Challenger title in five outings and his second title in 2023, when he won the Garden Open 2023 in Rome, Italy.
  • Previously he won the 2019 ATP Buenos Aires(Argentina open) and 2017ATP Bengaluru Challengers.
  • The 41st editon of the Tampere Open was held in Tampere, Finland from 17th July to 23rd July, 2023.

About Tampere Open 2023:
i.Tampere Open is part of the ATP Challenger 75 category and played on Clay surface.
ii.In 1982, the Tampere Tennis Center hosted the first Tampere Open. After 40 editions, the tournament is now the longest-running Challenger in history.
iii. In 2007, the Tampere Open also opened for women, when the women’s ITF tournament began to be organized.

  • In 2023, only the men’s tournament will be played at the Tampere Open.

i.The 25-year old Sumit Nagal hails from Jhajjar District of Haryana and started playing Proffesional tennis from 2015.

  • His career best ATP men’s singles ranking is 122 at 2020.

i.He won the prize money of USD 9,880 and collected 75 ATP points from this tournament.
ii.He secured 178th place in ATP World Singles ranking after the winning Tamper Open.
iii.He is the first Indian to win two ATP Challengers in Europe.Previously Indian players Somdev Devvarman, Rohan Bopanna, and Harsh Mankad had won one ATP Challenger title in Europe.

  • He is also the first Indian to win three ATP Challenger singles titles on Clay.

iv.He also becomes the first Indian player to win two ATP Challenger titles in Europe and second in Finland.

ISSF Junior World Championships 2023: India Finished 2nd with 17 medalsIndia won 17 Medals(6 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze)and secured the 2nd spot in the overall medal tally of the 3rd edition International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championships 2023Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun. The event held from 14th July to 25th July 2023 at Changwon Shooting Range, Changwon, South Korea.

  • China topped the medal tally with 28 medals(12 Golds, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze).

i.The 19-year old Kamaljeet won two golds in the men’s 50m pistol event and the 50m pistol men’s team event along with Ankait Tomar and Sandeep Bishnoi.
ii.Sainyam won three medals including a gold in 10m air pistol women, and a bronze each in the 10m air pistol mixed team and women’s team events.

Czech-French novelist Milan Kundera Passed Away
On 11th July 2023, Milan Kundera, Czech Republic-born French writer passed away in Paris, France at the age of 94. He was born on April 1, 1929 in Brno city, Czech Republic (erstwhile Czechoslovakia).
He was best-known for his 1984 novel ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’.

  • He emigrated to France in 1975 after his dismissal from the Czechoslovakian Communist Party for “anti-communist activities and he lost his Czech nationality in 1979 and became a citizen of France in 1981. After 40 years, his Czech citizenship was restored in 2019.
  • His notable work includes The Joke (1967); Laughable Loves (1968); Life is Elsewhere (1969); The Book of Laughter and Forgetting” (1979); Immortality (1988); Identity (1998)
  • His awards include the Jerusalem Prize (1985); the Herder Prize (2000).

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023- 26th July Kargil Vijay Diwas - July 26 2023Kargil Vijay Diwas or Kargil Victory Day is observed annually across India on 26th July to observe India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil war 1999 and also pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the Kargil war.

  • 26th July 2023, mark the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

The operation that took place during the war is known as Operation Vijay.
Operation Vijay:
The mission of Operation Vijay was to recapture the famous “Tiger Hill” and all the territories occupied by Pakistani troops along the  Line of Control (LoC).
Note: Every year, on the Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Prime Minister of India pays tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Kargil war, at Amar Jawan at the India Gate, New Delhi, Delhi.

International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems 2023 – July 26International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems - July 26 2023 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems is annually celebrated across the globe on 26th July to raise awareness of the significance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.

  • The day is also known as “The World Mangrove Day“.
  • 26th July 2023 marks the observance of the 8th International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems.

Background:
i.On 6th November 2015, UNESCO at its 38th session of the General Conference adopted the resolution 38C/66 and officially declared 26th July of every year, in response to the request of Ecuador, as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
ii.The first-ever International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem was observed on 26th July 2016.
iii.The date 26th July also marks the death anniversary of Greenpeace activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto, who passed away in 1998 during a massive protest to re-establish the mangrove wetlands in Muisne, Ecuador.

BBMP & World Desgin Organisation signed MoU to develop the infrastructure of Bengaluru
On 24th July 2023, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the administrative body of the Greater Bengaluru metropolitan area & the 4th Largest Municipal Corporation in India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Canada-based international non-governmental organization, World Design Organisation (WDO), to offer suggestions and guidance on the ways to improve the infrastructure of Bengaluru(Karnataka).
The MoU was signed as a part of the ‘Brand Bengaluru’ initiative.

  • The objective of the pact is to give a new look to the Bengaluru city, focussing on areas under the jurisdiction of Bengaluru Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (BMRDA) from the municipal areas.
  • The MoU was signed by David Kusuma, President, WDO and Tushar Giri Nath, Commissioner, BBMP.

Note: WDO, formerly known as the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid), that promotes the profession of industrial design.
WDO launched a new global programme ‘World Design Protopolis’ (WDP) to support the creation of solutions-based initiatives to globally address key development issues. The inaugural cycle of WDP took place in Bengaluru on 24th July 2023.
WDP project of Bengaluru was hosted in partnership with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bengaluru and the Association of Designers of India over a 5-year period from 2023 to 2028.
