FSSAI’s State Food Safety Index 2023-24: Kerala, TN, & J&K Emerged as Top PerformersKerala, Tamil Nadu (TN) and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) have emerged as the top performers of the 6th edition of State Food Safety Index (SFSI – 2023-24) developed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Kerala has topped the SFSI for 2nd consecutive year with 73.75 score out of 100.
- The SFSI 2023-24 was unveiled by the Union Minister Jagat Parkash Nadda, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) during the inaugural session of 2nd Global Food Regulators Summit (GFRS 2024) held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Delhi.

CERT-In & SISA Launches First of its kind ANAB-Accredited CSPAI ProgramOn September 23, 2024, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with SISA Information Security Private Limited, launched the Certified Security Professional for Artificial Intelligence (CSPAI) program, the first of its kind ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accredited Artificial Intelligence (AI) security certification.
Note: Washington, DC(the United States of America -USA) based ANAB is a wholly owned subsidiary of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a non-profit organization.
Key People:
Dr. Sanjay Bahl, Director General of CERT-In, and Dharshan Shanthamurthy, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SISA, launched the initiative and presented the CSPAI certificates to cybersecurity professionals during a ceremony organised by SISA at their Headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Key Points:
i.The event marks a major development in AI security certification through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between CERT-In and SISA.
ii.The program aims to equip security professionals with the knowledge to integrate AI into business applications while ensuring sustainable and secure practices.
The course features all the key elements of AI security and will enrich the skills to adapt and deploy secure and trustworthy AI in work environments.

7th NSSO Annual PLFS: Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged at 3.2% in July 2023 to June 2024On 23rd September 2024, the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the “7th Annual Report of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) (July 2023 to June 2024)”. As per the report, Unemployment Rate (UR) in usual status (ps+ss) for persons aged 15 years and above has remained unchanged at 3.2% during July 2023 to June 2024.
i.The UR for male aged 15 years and above saw a marginal decrease from 3.3% (July 2022-June2023) to 3.2% (July 2023-June2024).
- While, UR for female aged 15 years and above has increased from 2.9% to 3.2% during the same time period.
ii.At all India level, Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in usual status (ps+ss) for persons of age 15 years and above has increased from 57.9% (in 2022-23) to 60.1% (in 2023-24).
iii.Overall Worker Population Rate (WPR) in usual status for persons of age 15 years and above has increased from 56.0% (in 2022-23) to 58.2% (in 2023-24).

iBUS Network Secures USD 34 Million from IFC for Global Expansion
Bengaluru(Karnataka) based iBUS Network and Infrastructure Private Limited, a leading digital infrastructure solutions provider, has secured an investment of Rs 280 crore (USD 34 million) from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group (WBG) for a minority stake in the company.
- This investment will aid iBUS in strengthening its market position and expanding both domestically and globally.
i.IFC’s expertise will help iBUS scale its operations and enter new markets, focusing on solutions like in-building connectivity, outdoor small cells (a radio access point), managed Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) services, and intelligent Internet of Things (IoT).
ii.This is IFC’s first Infrastructure technology (Infratech) investment in the Asia-Pacific region, aligning with IFC’s focus on improving digital connectivity and supporting India’s digital transformation.
iii.Under this partnership, iBUS Network will leverage IFC’s gender advisory to increase women’s representation across all organizational tiers.

S&P retains India’s Growth Forecast at 6.8% for FY25S&P Global Ratings has maintained India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast at 6.8% for the fiscal year 2024-2025 (FY25) and 6.9% for FY26 in its ‘Economic Outlook Asia-Pacific Q4 2024: Central Banks To Remain Cautious Despite U.S. Rate Relief’.
- The Indian economy grew 8.2% in FY24 and for FY27 and FY28, India’s GDP growth is expected at 7%.
- The report expects that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) might cut interest rates in October 2024, as part of its inflation control measures.
Key Points:
i.For the Asia-Pacific region, the GDP growth is projected at 4.4% for 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027.
ii.In the June 2024 quarter, India’s GDP growth moderated as high interest rates curbed urban demand.
iii.Inflation is projected at 4.5% for FY25, 4.6% for FY26 and FY27, and 4.1% for FY28.
- The RBI’s inflation target is set at 4% with a tolerance band of +/- 2%.

FFI Announced Kiran Rao’s Laapata Ladies as India’s Official Entry to Oscars 2025On 23rd September 2024, the Film Federation of India (FFI) has announced the name of Kiran Rao directed ‘Laapata Ladies’ as India’s official entry for the “Best International Feature Film” category at the prestigious 97th Academy Awards (Oscars 2025), which will held on 2nd March 2025 in Los Angeles, California, the United States of America (USA).
Note: In 2023, India submitted Malayalam film “2018: Everyone is a Hero” as its official entry at the 96th Academy Awards.
Selection Process:
i.The film was unanimously selected by 13-member jury of FFI headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua.
ii.The film was selected among 29 films, including 12 hindi films, 6 Tamil and 4 Malayalam films.
iii.Laapata Ladies was selected over award winning films like:
- Malayalam film ‘Aattam’ (The Play) which won the 70th National Film Award for Best Feature Film in August 2024.
- Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light” which won Grand Prix, the 2nd highest award of Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
About Laapata Ladies:
i.It is a critically acclaimed hindi language film, which was released theatrically in March 2024 across India. Before its release in India, the film was screened at prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September, 2023.
ii.The film is produced by Actor-filmaker Amir Khan and Jio Studios.
iii.The film is based on Biplab Goswami’s Two Brides, one of the winning scripts at the Cinestaan India Storytellers Contest.
Gujarat’s Rhea Singha Crowned Miss Universe India 2024On September 22 2024, Rhea Singha, (19-year-old) from Gujarat has been crowned Miss Universe India 2024 at the pageant held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. She was crowned by Urvashi Rautela, Bollywood actress and Miss Universe India 2015.
- Rhea will now represent India at the 73rd Miss Universe 2024 pageant, which is scheduled to be held in Mexico in November 2024.

- 1st Runner-Up- Pranjal Priya (Maharashtra).
- 2nd Runner-Up- Chhavi Verg (New Jersey, the United States of America – USA).
- 3rd Runner-Up- Sushmita Roy (West Bengal – WB).

Points to Note:
i.The Miss Universe India 2024 pageant was the 1st to be organised by the Glamanand Supermodel India organization, which will now select India’s official representative to the Miss Universe.
- The previous franchise of Miss Universe India was managed by the Miss Diva organisation, which held the franchise since 2013.
ii.Rhea Singha also won the Miss Glamorous subtitle award during the 2024 Miss Universe India pageant and she is one of the youngest winners of this pageant title.
Miss Universe:
i.The Miss Universe pageant has been organised by the Miss Universe Organization(MUO), the USA-and Thailand-based global, inclusive organization.
- MUO is the official entity responsible for hosting the annual Miss Universe competition globally.
- The inaugural Miss Universe pageant was held in 1952.
ii.The most recent Miss Universe from India is Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu (Punjab). She is 3rd on the Miss Universe from India list to win the contest and was crowned Miss Universe 2021.
- Sushmita Sen became the first Miss Universe from India crowned in 1994; Lara Dutta was the 2nd Miss Universe from India crowned in 2000.
iv.Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua won the Miss Universe 2023 crown during the 72nd Miss Universe pageant held in El Salvador.
APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS
ACC Approved Various Appointments of IPS Officers: Alok Ranjan & Amit Garg Appointed Director of NCRB & SVPNPAThe Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointments of the Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Alok Ranjan as Director of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) and Amit Garg as Director of Hyderabad (Telangana)-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) with immediate effect.
- Alok Ranjan has been appointed for a tenure up to his superannuation on 30 June 2026. He replaces Vivek Gogia, who has been repatriated to Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre.
- Amit Garg has been appointed for a term up to his retirement on 31 October 2027.
Note: The ACC also approved the appointments of various IPS officers in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Border Security Force (BSF).
About Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA):

China’s Smart Dragon-3 rocket launches 8 satellites from SeaOn 24th September 2024, China launched the Jielong-3 (Smart Dragon-3) carrier rocket from a sea platform on the waters near the city of Haiyang in east China’s Shandong Province to place eight satellites into planned orbit.
- The offshore launch was carried out by Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center.
Note:
- The launch was China’s 44th launch of 2024.
- This launch also marks the 4th flight mission for the SD-3 carrier rocket series.
- China has now conducted 13 sea-based launches using four different rocket models viz. Long March 11, Smart Dragon 3, Ceres 1 and Gravity 1.
Smart Dragon-3:
Smart Dragon-3 is a commercial carrier rocket developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
This solid-fueled launch vehicle with a length of 31 meters (m) and a maximum diameter of 2.64 m, has a carrying capacity of about 1.5 tonnes for a 500 kilometer (km) solar synchronous orbit.
Payload:
This rideshare mission featured 8 satellites which includes,
i.Tianyi-41 for Spacety.
ii.Xingshidai-15, -21, and -22 – developed by ADA Space (Chengdu Guoxing Aerospace Technology Co., Ltd.) in collaboration with various technological partners.
iii.Fudan-1 – an Earth observation satellite for Fudan University.
iv.Tianyan-15 (Final Frontier-1 (01)) – developed by Final Frontier (Zuijian Qianyuan Aerospace Technology Co., Ltd).
v.Yuxing-2 (05) – a remote sensing satellite for Beijing Aerospace Yuxing Technology Co., Ltd,
vi.Jitian Star A-01 for Suzhou-based Jitian Xingzhou.
Russian Soyuz Capsule Successfully Brings Back 3 Crew Members from ISSOn 23rd September 2024, Russian Spacecraft Soyuz MS-25 has successfully brought back 3 crew members, including Two Russian cosmonauts Oleg Dmitriyevich Kononenko and Nikolay Aleksandrovich Chub and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson, from the International Space Station (ISS).
- The spacecraft was safely landed in a remote area near Zhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.
Key Points:
i.Russia’s Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub returned on Earth after their record-breaking stay of 374 days in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at the ISS. They returned after a trip of 158.6 million miles, spanning 5,984 orbits.
- With this, Kononenko has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 1,111 days in space over 5 missions. Thus, he set a new world record for the longest cumulative time any person has spent in space.
ii.NASA’s Tracy Caldwell Dyson has spent 6 months at ISS. Spanning 184 days in space, Dyson’s third spaceflight covered 2,944 orbits of the Earth and a journey of 78 million miles as an Expedition 70/71 flight engineer.
Note: The absolute record for the longest unbroken time any human has spent in space belongs to Russia’s Valeri Polyakov, who spent 438 days on the Mir space station in 1994-95.

ISS, the largest space station ever built, was placed in LEO. It is maintained by International space agencies of: NASA of the United States of America (USA); Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) of Japan, Roscosmos of Russia, European Space Agency (ESA) of European Union (EU); and Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Canada.

DRDO Transfers High-Altitude Sustenance Technologies to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd
On 21st September 2024, the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), a key laboratory under Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), handed over critical high-altitude sustenance technologies to the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL).
- This transfer took place during an orientation workshop held at PGCIL’s regional headquarters in Jammu, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) aimed at preparing employees for the challenging conditions of the 5000 MW (Mega Watt) Pang-Kaithal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Project in Ladakh, situated at an altitude of 15,760 feet.
i.The workshop was led by Dr. Rajeev Varshney, Director of DIPAS, and Amit Sharma (i/c), Chief General Manager of the HVDC Project.
ii.DIPAS previously signed a MoU with PGCIL to provide technical knowledge on high-altitude operations.
iii.DIPAS is renowned for its high-altitude research and has developed solutions such as acclimatization protocols, nutritional ration scales, protective clothing, energy-efficient shelters, and cold-injury prevention creams, especially for the Indian Army (IA) in the Himalayan region.

Pushkar Singh Dhami , Chief Minister(CM) of Uttarakhand, launched a book titled “Khaki Mein Sthitapragya-Ek IPS Adhikari ki Smiritiyan avam Anubhav“ at the Institute of Research Development & Training (IRDT) auditorium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The book, authored by Anil Raturi, former Director General of Police (DGP), Uttarakhand, is published by Winsar Publishing Co.
i.The book compiles the author’s memories and experiences as an IPS(Indian Police Service) officer.
ii.The title Sthitapragya refers to maintaining equanimity in both success and failure.
iii.The book aims to guide young officers on facing challenges with patience and resilience.
TN Governor R.N.Ravi Released the Book ‘Sri Rama in Tamilagam – An Inseparable Bond’ by Dr. D.K.Hari & Dr. D.K.Hema Hari
R.N.Ravi, Governor of Tamil Nadu (TN) released the book titled ‘Sri Rama in Tamilagam – An Inseparable Bond‘ authored by the husband-wife duo Dr. D.K.Hari and Dr. D.K.Hema Hari, in a function organised at Bharathiar Mandapam, Raj Bhavan, Chennai, TN. The book is published by Rare Publications.
- The first copy of the book was received by Dr. H.V.Hande, Former Minister for Health of TN, and Swaminathan Gurumurthy, Editor of Thuglak Magazine.
- This book has been written by the authors in 3 languages, English, Hindi, and Tamil in dedication to the newly built temple for Sri Rama at Sri Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya, in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
- This book emphasises Tamilagam (now known asTN) as the Karmabhoomi of Sri Rama, just as Ayodhya is his Janmabhoomi, highlighting many key events of the Ramayana that occurred in Tamilagam.

World Rose Day for Cancer Patients 2024 – September 22 World Rose Day, also known as the Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients is annually observed across the globe on 22 September to raise awareness about cancer and to demonstrate solidarity with cancer patients and their loved ones.
- The Day aims to honour the strength and courage of those battling cancer, bringing happiness, support, and hope to cancer patients and their caregivers.
Background:
i.The origin of World Rose Day was credited to Melinda Rose Hathaway, a 12-year-old Canadian girl diagnosed with Askin’s Tumor, a rare form of blood cancer in 1994.
ii.The day is reportedly observed in memory of Melinda Rose, who passed away on 15 September 1996, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength.

International Day of Sign Languages 2024 – September 23 The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is annually observed across the globe on 23 September to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users worldwide.
- IDSL 2024 is celebrated as part of the International Week of Deaf People (IWDP) 2024 from 23 to 29 September 2024.
The 2024 theme of IDSL is, “Sign up for Sign Language Rights”
i.On 19 December 2017, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/72/161, proclaiming the 23 September of every year as the International Day of Sign Languages.
- The 1st IDSL was observed on 23 September 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf (IWDP).
ii.On 23 September 2024, the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), organised an event to celebrate IDSL 2024 at Bhim Hall, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (AIC), Janpath, New Delhi, Delhi .
