India’s Total Installed Power Capacity Rises to 476 GW ; Nearly 50% from Non-Fossil SourcesIn June 2025, Government of India (GoI) released the latest data on India’s power generation capacity. As per the data, India’s total installed power capacity has increased from 305 Giga Watts (GW) in 2015-16 to 476 GW (as of June 2025).
- The data showed that nearly half i.e. 49% (235.7 GW) of India’s total power generation capacity comes from non-fossil fuel sources, including 226.9 GW of Renewable Energy (RE) and 8.8 GW of nuclear power.
- However, Thermal Power alone accounts for 50.52% (240 GW) of India’s total installed power capacity.
- While, Coal alone contributes more than 91% of all thermal-based energy, which signifies its vital role in meeting the country’s rising power demand.
Key Points:
i.The data also revealed that electricity generation has increased from 1,168 Billion Units (BU) in 2015-16 to an estimated 1,824 BU in 2024-25.
ii.The installed RE capacity in India has increased by nearly 3 times i.e. from 76.37 GW (in March 2014) to 226.79 GW (in June 2025).
iii.The data revealed that per capita electricity consumption increased by 45.8% to 1,395 kilowatt-hour (kWh) (in 2023-24) compared to 957 kWh (in 2013-14).

Tripura Declared India’s Third ‘Fully Literate’ State After Mizoram & GoaIn June 2025, Tripura was declared the third ‘Fully Literate State’ in India, after Mizoram and Goa, upon achieving a literacy rate of 95.6%, as announced by the Chief Minister (CM) of Tripura Dr. Manik Saha, during an event at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, Tripura.
- The declaration aligns with the criteria set by the Government of India (GoI), where any State or Union Territory (UT) achieving over 95% literacy is granted the status of ‘Fully Literate’.
Note: The Government of India(GoI) has set a target to achieve full literacy across India by the year 2030.
Implementation of ULLAS Programme:
i.This milestone was achieved through the successful implementation of the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) – New India Literacy Programme (NILP), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) launched in 2022 by the Ministry of Education (MoE) in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
- It aims to achieve universal adult literacy in India by 2027.
ii.The ULLAS programme focused on five key components:
- Foundational literacy and numeracy
- Basic education
- Critical life skills
- Vocational skills
- Continuing education
iii.Tripura met all the above components through a coordinated effort led by the School Education Department, State Literacy Mission Authority, and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
Progress Over the Years:
i.In 1961, Tripura recorded a literacy rate of 20.24%, which steadily improved to 60.44% by 1991, and further increased to 73.19% in 2001.
ii.In the 2011 Census, it rose to 87.22%, ranking third-highest in India after Kerala and Mizoram
iii.As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24, the rate stood at 93.7%
iv.With the impact of ULLAS, it increased to 95.6%
v.2,228 volunteer teachers and 943 Social Awareness Centres conducted multilingual classes (Bengali, English and tribal Kokborok) in remote areas.

MoSPI Constitutes TEG chaired by Surjit S. Bhalla for India’s First Household Income Survey 2026On June 23, 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) announced the formation of an 8-member Technical Expert Group (TEG) to design and oversee India’s first full-scale Household Income Survey, scheduled for February 2026. This survey is conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the MoSPI.
- The Technical Expert Group will be chaired by Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla, former Executive Director(ED) for India at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
i.This comprehensive survey aims to address the long-standing data gap in income distribution and assess the impact of technology on household wages, marking a significant advancement in evidence-based policymaking.
ii.The TEG will guide the NSO on all aspects of the survey. The final report will support the analysis of regional income disparities, welfare targeting, and income inequality.

Adani Commissions India’s First Off-Grid 5 MW Green Hydrogen Pilot Plant in GujaratOn 23 June 2025, Ahmedabad (Gujarat)-based Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, commissioned India’s first off-grid 5 megawatt (MW) green hydrogen pilot plant at Kutch, Gujarat.
- The plant also supports India’s goal of becoming a global leader in green hydrogen production and aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision by cutting down on imports and strengthening India’s energy security.
- The project marks a significant milestone under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched in 2023 with an outlay of USD 2.4 billion, supporting India’s goals of achieving energy independence by 2047 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Key Features:
i.Infrastructure: The off-grid green hydrogen pilot plant is powered entirely by solar energy and integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling it to function independently from the conventional electricity grid.
ii.Technology: It uses electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, producing green hydrogen without carbon emissions.
iii.Innovation: India’s first green hydrogen facility features a fully automated, closed-loop electrolyser system that dynamically adapts to real-time solar inputs, enhancing operational flexibility, efficiency, safety, and performance amid solar power variability.
- It serves as a Proof of Concept (PoC) for ANIL’s upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Mundra(Gujarat), a strategic initiative expected to play a crucial role in advancing India’s low-carbon transition.
iv.Capacity: The facility produces hydrogen equivalent to 25 kilograms (kg) per refill, supporting transport ranges of around 300 kilometers (km)
v.Emission Reduction: It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes (MT) annually, equivalent to planting approximately 13,000 trees.
Integrated Green Energy Ecosystem at Mundra:
i.ANIL is developing an integrated ecosystem at Mundra, for large-scale green hydrogen production and derivatives like green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel.
- The facility also focuses on manufacturing solar cells, modules, wafers, wind turbine generators, and electrolysers to meet domestic and international demand.

ICMR-NIIH Launches India’s First National Rare Blood Donor Registry
In June 2025, Mumbai(Maharashtra) based Indian Council of Medical Research -National Institute of Immunohaematology (ICMR-NIIH) launched India’s first Rare Donor Registry of India (RDRI). This initiative aims to streamline access to rare blood types for patients with conditions like thalassemia and sickle cell disease, who require frequent and precisely matched transfusions.
- ICMR-NIIH is collaborating with the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW), to expand donor recruitment and enhance registry accessibility.
Key Features of RDRI:
i.Database: Includes 600+ donors negative for critical antigen combinations, 250 extremely rare blood type donors, and 170 Bombay blood group donors—the most sought-after rare blood type in India.
ii.Integration: The registry will link with e-Raktakosh, India’s digital blood bank platform, enabling real-time tracking of rare blood availability across 4,000+ licensed blood banks (as per Central Drug Standard Control Organisation, CDSCO).
iii.Technology: Uses high-throughput molecular assays to screen donors, ensuring compatibility beyond standard ABO and RhD testing.
iv.It positions India alongside 27 countries with national rare blood donor registries, enhancing equity in healthcare and transfusion services.
UPSC Launches Pratibha Setu Portal for Near-Successful Candidates
In June 2025, the New Delhi (Delhi) based Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) under the direction of the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions(MoPP&P) launched ‘Pratibha Setu’ (Professional Resource And Talent Integration – Bridge for Hiring Aspirants), a revamped version of the Public Disclosure Scheme (PDS) introduced in 2018.
- UPSC Pratibha Setu is designed to provide a career-bridging platform for candidates who completed all stages of various UPSC examinations but were not included in the final merit list.
- This initiative aims to bridge the gap between deserving candidates and potential recruiters from both government and private sectors by providing access to a curated talent pool.
i.Only candidates who willingly give their consent will be listed in the database; participation is not automatic or mandatory.
iiExamination Coverage: Civil Services, Engineering Services, Indian Forest Service(IFS), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Combined Defence Services (CDS), Medical Services, Geoscientist, and Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service (IES/ISS) are included exams.
iii.Verified employers can register on the UPSC Pratibha Setu portal using their Corporate Identification Number (CIN), authenticated through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MoCA) portal.
iv.Registered employers receive login credentials to access the soft biodata of candidates, including educational qualifications and contact details. Maintains data privacy and ensures transparent and secure access to talent.

Sustainable Development Report 2025: Finland Topped; India Enters Top 100 for First timeIn June 2025, the New York (United States of America) based United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) released the 10th edition of the Sustainable Development Report (SDR) titled “Financing Sustainable Development to 2030 and Mid Century”. For the first time, India entered the top 100 on the 2025 Sustainable Development Goals Index(SDGi) , ranking 99th out of 193 countries with a score of 66.95, improving from 109th place in 2024.
- Finland has secured the first place with a score of 87.02, followed by Sweden with 85.74 and Denmark with 85.26.
- China also showed strong performance, ranking 49th with a score of 74.39, thus entering the top 50.
Key Findings:
i.A decade after the adoption of the SDGs, progress is alarmingly behind schedule, with fewer than 20% of targets expected to be met by 2030.
- Only 17% of the targets are on track to be achieved worldwide.
ii.As per the report, among the neighboring countries, Bhutan is ranked 74th with a score of 70.5, Nepal (85) with a score of 68.6, Bangladesh (114) with 63.9 and Pakistan (140) with 57 points.
iii.19 of the top 20 countries are in Europe. Even these countries face significant challenges in achieving at least 2 goals, including those related to climate and biodiversity, largely due to unsustainable consumption.

WEF 2025 Technology Pioneers Cohort Includes 10 Start-ups from IndiaOn June 23, 2025, the World Economic Forum (WEF), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, announced the 2025 cohort of its Technology Pioneers programme, featuring 100 early-stage companies from 28 countries that are driving innovation across industries.
- A total of 10 Indian start-ups were selected in the 2025 cohort, showcasing India’s growing prominence in space technology, clean energy, robotics, healthtech, and financial technology (FinTech).

Fin min, RBI meet govt officials on scaling up Unified Lending InterfaceOn 23rd June 2025, the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF) held a high-level meeting at New Delhi, on scaling up Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) latest Digital Lending Infrastructure Unified Lending Interface (ULI).
- This meeting was co-chaired by Shri M. Nagaraju, Secretary, DFS and Shri T. Rabi Sankar, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
- The meeting saw participation from senior officials of central and state governments, the RBI, and the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH).
About ULI:
i.ULI is an Application Programme Interface (API) based, consent-driven platform that enables seamless, secure access to authenticated borrower data such as Aadhaar, land records, tax filings, and KYC (Know Your Customer) from multiple sources by Banks and Financial Institutions (FI).
- This platform enables banks, Non-Bank Financial Companies (NBFCs), and fintechs to appraise and disburse loans faster and more efficiently, especially for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSMEs), farmers, and underserved borrowers.
ii.ULI is a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for the credit market developed by RBIH and co-conceptualized with the RBI.
- It was announced by the former RBI governor Shri Shaktikanta Das at RBI 90@ Global Conference on August 26,2024.
L&T Lists India’s 1st ESG Bonds worth Rs 500 Crore on NSEOn June 23, 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Larsen & Toubro (L&T), an engineering and technology conglomerate, announced that it has listed India’s 1st Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) bonds on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
- The company has raised Rs 500 crore through Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) at a coupon rate of 6.35%.
- The bonds were issued under Mumbai based market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)’s newly introduced ESG and sustainability linked bond framework (launched on June 05, 2025).
Key Points:
i.The NCDs will mature over a period of 3 years (i.e. on June 19, 2028), with annual interest payments.
ii.The transaction was issued in partnership with Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), which served as the sole leader arranger.
iii.Under SEBI’s sustainability-linked bond agreement, L&T has undertaken ambitious environmental commitments like: measurable reductions in freshwater withdrawal intensity and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.
- These targets are integral part of L&T’s broader vision of achieving water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040, which will directly contribute to India’s national agenda for Net-Zero and climate-resilient growth.
iv.SEBI’s framework mandates detailed disclosures including sustainability objectives, external evaluations like: Second-Party Opinions (SPOs), and on-going post-issuance reporting with clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor ESG impact.

S&P Global Ratings Raised India’s GDP Growth Forecast for FY26 to 6.5%On June 24, 2025, New York (the United States of America, USA) based S&P Global Ratings (previously known as Standard & Poor’s) released its latest ‘Economic Outlook Asia-Pacific Q3 2025: Resilience May Vary’. The report has revised India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth projection upwards for Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26) to 6.5%, from its previous estimate of 6.3%.
- This upward projection for FY26 is supported by factors like: lower crude oil prices, monetary easing, income-tax concessions and normal monsoon.
- S&P’s growth projection for India for FY26 is in line with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s projection of 6.5% for FY26.
- Also, S&P Global Ratings has raised its GDP projection for India for FY27 from 6.5% to 6.7%.
Key Findings:
i.The report cautioned about rising geopolitical risks like: turbulence in the Middle East region and the United States of America (USA)-Iran conflict, which may increase global oil prices that could have significant economic impact in the Asia-Pacific region.
ii.The report highlighted that India relies heavily on imports, with 90% of its crude oil requirements and nearly 50% of its natural gas requirements sourced from international markets, thus, economy remains vulnerable to extended price shocks.
- But, S&P also cited that international energy markets are currently well-supplied, making any long-term disruption to oil prices unlikely.
iii.As per the report, India’s inflation is expected to average 4% in 2025 compared to 4.6% in 2024.
iv.It has also projected the Indian Rupee (INR) to weaken to 87.5 against American dollar (USD) by December 2025, from 86.6 at 2024-end.

MoD Orders 450 Nagastra-1R Loitering Munitions from SDAL for Enhanced Tactical OperationsOn June 23, 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) placed an order for 450 Nagastra-1R loitering munitions (suicide drones) with Nagpur (Maharashtra)-based Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), a subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited (SIIL).
- The Rs. 158 crore contract aims to boost the Indian Army’s (IA) precision-strike capabilities.
- The munitions are over 80% made in India, supporting the “Make in India” initiative and lowering dependence on foreign suppliers like Israel.
Specifications of Nagastra-1R:
i.Precision Targeting: Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled strikes with a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of just 2 meters (m).
ii.Range and Endurance:
- 30 kilometer (km) in autonomous mode or 15 km with human control.
- 60-minute flight time at altitudes exceeding 4,500m, evading radar detection
iii.Day-Night Operations: Equipped with a 360-degree gimbal camera and optional thermal camera for night missions.
iv.Unique Recovery System: Features a parachute mechanism to abort missions, retrieve, and reuse the drone, unlike most global counterparts.
v.Warhead: Carries a 1-kg explosive payload effective against soft-skin targets like enemy bunkers and infiltrators.
vi.Tactical Flexibility: Silent electric propulsion enables covert strikes on terrorist launch pads and border infiltrators, minimizing soldier risk.
vii.Extreme Conditions: Successfully tested in Union Territory(UT) of Ladakh(-20 degree Celsius (°C)) and Babina field firing range (Uttar Pradesh, UP), proving high-altitude and all-terrain operability.

i.Follow-on Contract: This order adds to the 480 Nagastra-1 drones procured in 2024 under the Indian Army’s(IA) Emergency Procurement Powers.

- Dangeti Jahnavi is the first Indian selected for TSI’s orbital mission to the Orbital Port Space Station, scheduled for launch in 2029.
- She has also become the first first Indian to successfully complete Washington (USA) based National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA)’s International Air and Space Program(IASP).
About Titan Space Mission (TSI):
i.The TSI, formerly known as EarthLoop Orbital Cruise, is a commercial spaceflight initiative aimed at democratizing access to low-earth orbit.
ii.The mission will be led by NASA Astronaut Colonel (Retired) William Mc. Arthur Jr, Chief Astronaut, TSI.
iii.The mission will carry astronaut candidates on a 5-hour orbital journey, completing at least two full orbits around Earth at an altitude of 300 kilometers (kms).
- It will feature 3-hours of sustained zero-gravity, offering valuable research opportunities in microgravity.

Arjuna Awardee Lalit Upadhyay Announces Retirement from International HockeyOn June 23, 2025, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, a two-time Olympic bronze medallist, announced his retirement from international hockey after playing 183 matches and scoring 67 goals for India. The announcement came after his final appearance against Belgium in the European leg of the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) Pro League 2024–25.
- In 2021, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting award, for his significant contribution to Indian hockey.
Career Achievements of Lalit Upadhyay:
i.Lalit Upadhyay hails from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP) and began his senior international hockey career in 2014, debuting at the Hockey World Cup 2014.
ii.He was an integral part of the Indian hockey team that ended a 41-year Olympic medal drought by winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
- And a member of second consecutive Olympic bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.
iii.He was a part of the Indian team that secured gold medals at the Asian Champions Trophy in both 2016 and 2018 and Silver medal in 2022 Commonwealth Games.
iv.In 2017, he won gold at the Asia Cup and bronze at the Hockey World League Final, followed by a silver at the 2018 FIH Champions Trophy and a bronze at the 2018 Asian Games.
v.In 2022, he clinched a gold medal at the Asian Games and played a key role in India’s third-place finish in the FIH Pro League 2021–22.
vi.Since 2022, he has served as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) in the Uttar Pradesh Police.

FedEx founder Fred Smith, pioneer of express delivery, died aged 80
In June 2025, Frederick W. Smith, the visionary founder of FedEx Corporation, passed away at the age of 80 in Memphis, Tennessee, United States of America (USA).
- He was born on 11 August 1944 in Marks, Mississippi, USA.
About Frederick W. Smith:
i.Starting his career with military service, Fred Smith completed two tours in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts for acts of bravery.
ii.He concluded his service in 1969, retiring with the rank of Captain in the United States Marine Corps (USMC).
iii.He launched Federal Express in 1973 with 14 Dassault Falcon jets. Under his leadership, FedEx grew into a global logistics leader, now moving nearly USD 2 trillion worth of goods annually in over 220 countries and territories, with an average of 17 million shipments per business day.
iv.He stepped down from the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in March 2022 and continued to serve as the Executive Chairman of FedEx Corporation.
v.In 2007, he was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame in recognition of his significant contributions to the aviation and logistics industries.
Former India Spinner Dilip Doshi Passed Away
In June 2025, Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Rasiklal Doshi has passed away at the age of 77 in London, United Kingdom (UK).
- Doshi played 33 Tests and took 114 wickets, with 6 Five-wicket hauls.
About Dilip Doshi:
i.Dilip Doshi was born on December 22, 1947, in Rajkot, Gujarat.
ii.He made his debut in Test matches in September 1979 against Australia and in One Day Internationals (ODIs) in December 1980 against Australia.
iii.In ODIs, he got 22 wickets in 15 matches, including two 4-wicket hauls.
iv.Doshi was one of the four bowlers who took over 100 test wickets after debuting past the age of 30.
v.He made his debut in the domestic circuit in the 1968-69 season, Doshi played 238 first-class matches until his retirement in 1986, and scored 898 wickets and six 10-wicket hauls.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh Releases President Speech Compilation “Wings to Our Hopes – Volume 2”
On June 23, 2025, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), released ‘Wings to Our Hopes – Volume II’, a curated collection of 51 speeches delivered by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, during her second year in office (August 2023 to July 2024), at an event held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi(Delhi).
- Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, MIB, Union Minister of State(MoS) Dr. L. Murugan, MIB, and Officials from the Directorate of Publications Division and MIB were present during the event.
i.The speeches have been compiled by Rashtrapati Bhavan and published by the Directorate of Publications Division, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB).
ii.The collection has also been released in Hindi as ‘Aashaon Ki Udaan – Khand 2’ along with e-book versions.
iii.The publication serves as a reflection of India’s constitutional values and development priorities as articulated by the President. It is expected to become a reference document for policymakers, academicians, students, and aspirants of civil services.
Note: ‘Wings to Our Hopes – Volume I’ is a collection of speeches by President Droupadi Murmu during her first year in office (July 2022 – July 2023). It was published in July 2023.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh Unveils Prem Prakash’s Book “History That India Ignored”
In June 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T) (Independent Charge), unveiled a book “History That India Ignored”, authored by New Delhi(Delhi) based Asian News International (ANI) Chairman and veteran journalist Prem Prakash. The launch event, organized by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation in New Delhi.
- The book was published by New Delhi (Delhi) based Vitasta Publishing Private Limited
i.The book unveils the lesser-known aspects of India’s freedom struggle, supported by archival documents, eyewitness accounts, and chronology analysis. And also author highlights the early acts of resistance, such as the Vellore Mutiny (1806) and the 1824 Barrackpore uprising.
ii.The book recalls the unsung freedom fighters such as Mangal Pandey, Madan Lal Dhingra, Veer Savarkar, Subash Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army (INA). The author emphasizes the significant role of INA trials of 1945-46 and the Royal Indian Naval Mutiny of 1946 in the freedom movement.
iii.He had Worked with international broadcasters like Gaumont Actualités (France), Deutsche Wochenschau (Germany), and Warner-Pathé News,United State of America(USA).
iv.Co-founded Visnews in London in 1957, the world’s first global television news agency.
v.War Reporting & Journalism:Covered major events including: 1962 India–China War, 1965 and 1971 India–Pakistan Wars, with frontline reporting on the Haji Pir and Sialkot sectors
vi.Reported on key historical moments like the Emergency, Indira Gandhi’s assassination, and the 1969 Tashkent summit.
vii.Received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Global Education Mentor Awards in New Delhi (July 2023) for his contribution to journalism.

International Day of Women in Diplomacy 2025 – June 24 The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of Women in Diplomacy(IDWID) is observed annually on 24th June to recognise and promote the participation of women in diplomatic roles, including peacebuilding, negotiation, and multilateral diplomacy.
- June 24, 2025 marks the 3rd edition of the IDWID.
- The theme for IDWID 2025 is “Eliminating Structural Barriers to Women’s Leadership in Diplomacy”

i.The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 20th June 2022 during its 76th session, through Resolution A/RES/76/269.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women released the annual “Women in Politics” map, revealing persistent gender gaps in political representation worldwide.
- India ranks 174th with 5.6% in terms of representation of women in parliaments. Nicaragua topped in the list with 64.3%.
