4th Indian Navy-Bangladesh Navy CORPAT conducted in Northern Bay of BengalFourth edition of Indian Navy-Bangladesh Navy Coordinated Patrol CORPAT commences in Northern Bay of BengalOn May 22-23, 2022, the 4th edition of the Indian Navy-Bangladesh Navy (IN-BN) Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) was conducted in the Northern Bay of Bengal to ensure maritime security in the region.

  • Both sides undertook joint patrolling along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Participants:
IN– Indigenously Built, Indian Naval Ships (INS) Kora, a guided-missile corvette, and Sumedha, an offshore patrol vessel 
BN– Bangladesh Navy Ship (BNS) Ali Haider and BNS Abu Ubaidah. 

  • Maritime Patrol Aircraft of both navies also participated in the Coordinated Patrol.

Key Points:
i.The regular conduct of CORPAT strengthened mutual understanding and enhanced interoperability between IN-BN in countering transnational maritime threats at sea.

  • IN & BN initiated their first CORPAT in June 2018.

ii.The 3rd edition of IN-BN CORPAT was conducted in October 2020.
iii.In a separate development, INS Gomati, the last of the Godavari class guided-missile frigate of IN will be decommissioned on May 28, after 34 years of service.

PM participates in the 2nd Global COVID Virtual Summit

On 12th May 2022, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi participated in the Second Global COVID Virtual Summit. He was invited by Joseph R. Biden Jr, President of the United States of America(USA). He addressed the opening session of the summit on the theme “Preventing Pandemic Fatigue and Prioritizing Preparedness”.

The summit aimed to stimulate new actions to address the continued challenges of the COVID pandemic and build a stronger global health security architecture.

  • PM Modi also participated in the first Global COVID virtual Summit hosted by President Biden on 22 September 2021.

Jet Airways Gets DGCA Nod To Start Commercial FlightsJet Airways gets DGCA nod to resume commercial flight operationsDirectorate General of Civil Aviation(DGCA) granted Jet Airways the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) permit which would allow the airline to resume commercial flight operations after being grounded since 2019 due to mounting debts.The AOC enables Jet Airways to resume its scheduled commercial operations in India.
Background

  • The Naresh Goyal-founded Jet Airways, which operated its first commercial flight on May 5, 1993. But collapsed under the mounting debt on April 18, 2019.
  • The company then entered bankruptcy proceedings, and was acquired by a consortium of UAE-based businessman Murari Jalan and UK-based Kalrock Capital.
  • The consortium has committed to a funding of $180 million, of which $60 million will be used to repay the airline’s existing dues.

About Air Operator Certificate
An air operator’s certificate (AOC) is the approval granted by a civil aviation authority (CAA) to an aircraft operator to allow it to use aircraft for commercial purposes.
Key Facts
i. Between 15th May and 17th May 2022, Jet Airways conducted five proving flights to DGCA Officials to secure Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
ii. So on 20th May 2022, DGCA cleared such flights to issue AOC to Jet Airways for restarting their commercial flights.
iii. Now, Jet Airways intends to restart its commercial flight operations in the July-September quarter.
iv.The airline is appointing former SpiceJet and Vistara executive Sanjiv Kapoor as CEO.

India recorded Highest ever annual FDI inflow of USD 83.57bn in FY22.India’s FDI inflow inches up to $83.57 billion in FY22

i.In accordance with the data released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), India’s foreign direct investments (FDI) inflow was increased by 1.95% on-year to the highest ever annual figure of USD83.57 billion in the FY22 (2021-2022) as compared to $81.97 billion in FY21. This constituted an ‘endorsement‘ of India’s status among global investors.
ii.In India, Singapore is the top investing country with 27% of the equity inflows. It is followed by the United States (US) with inflows at 18% and Mauritius at 16% in FY22.
iii.Among states, Karnataka is the top recipient state for another year i.e. FY22 with 38% share of the total FDI equity inflows which were maximum in the computer software and hardware sector (35%), automobile industry (20%) , and education (12%). It is followed by Maharashtra at 26% and Delhi at 14%.

India’s ASHA Workers Among 6 Winners of WHO DG’s Global Health Leaders Awards
On 22nd May 2022, India’s one million all-women Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers, were honoured with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General’s Global Health Leaders Award 2022 for their “crucial role” in providing direct access to healthcare facilities in rural areas and their indefatigable efforts to rein in the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

  • WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the 6 awardees of WHO Director-General’s Global Health Leaders Awards. The award recognises the outstanding contributions to advancing global health, demonstrated leadership and commitment to regional health issues.

About ASHA Workers:
i.ASHA in Hindi means ‘Hope’, The ASHA workers are Indian government’s affiliated health-care workers who are the first point of contact in rural India.
ii.They worked to provide maternal care and immunisation for children against vaccine preventable diseases, community health care, treatment for hypertension and tuberculosis, and core areas of health promotion for nutrition, sanitation, and healthy living.
ii.Most of them gained spotlight during the peak of the pandemic in India for conducting door-to-door checks to trace coronavirus patients.
About WHO Director-General’s Global Health Leaders Awards:
i.The awardees for the WHO Director-General’s Global Health Leaders Awards were selected by the Director General himself.
ii.The ceremony for the award, which was established in 2019, was a part of the live-streamed high-level opening session of the 75th World Health Assembly(WHA75) which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 22-28 May 2022.

i.Dr Paul Farmer – was Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and co-founder of Partners in Health.
ii.Dr Ahmed Hankir – A British-Lebanese psychiatrist is a Senior Research fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research in association with Cambridge University and Academic Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry at the King’s College London in the United Kingdom.
iii.Ludmila Sofia Oliveira Varela – for her work to facilitate access to sports for all provides a healthy alternative to risky behaviours among young people, and tackles the growing threat of non-communicable diseases.
iv.Polio workers in Afghanistan – include Mohamamd Zubair Khalazai, Najibullah Kosha, Shadab Yosufi, Shareefullah Hemati, Haseeba Omari, Khadija Attaee, Munira Hakimi, Robina Yosufi and Shadab. 
v.Yōhei Sasakawa is the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, and Japan’s Ambassador for the Human Rights of People Affected by leprosy.

Anna Qabale Duba Received the First Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2022
Anna Qabale Duba,a nurse from Marsabit County in Kenya, became the winner of First Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2022 at an award ceremony held at Atlantis the Palm in Dubai. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Airline and Group, honoured the winner in the award event.

  • Top 10 finalists have been selected over 24,000 nurses from 184 countries for this Award.
  • Aster DM Healthcare has launched the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award on International Nurses Day 2021(12th May 2021) to recognise the phenomenal contribution of nurses to humanity .
  • The First Prize of the Aster Guardians Award will be conferred with US $250,000.
  • The award ceremony was attended by Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare , His Excellency Awadh Seghayer Al Ketbi, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, and His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Academic Health Corporation.

On May 23, 2022, Anthony Norman Albanese sworn in as 31st Prime Minister (PM) of Australia by Governor-General David Hurley at a ceremony in Canberra, Australia, ahead of the Quad Summit 2022 in Tokyo, Japan.
PM Anthony Albanese’s center-left Labor Party of Australia defeated previous PM Scott Morrison’s conservative coalition in Australia’s federal election in 2022. The conservative coalition had been in power under three prime ministers for 9 years.

  • In Australia’s 121-year history, he is the first candidate for Prime Minister with a “non-Anglo Celtic” background.

Highlight: Anthony Albanese was sworn in alongside four key cabinet members. The members include: Penny Wong, Australia’s first Foreign Minister born outside the country; Richard Marles, the new Deputy Prime Minister & Employment Minister; Jim Chalmers, the Treasurer; & Katy Gallagher, the Attorney-General & Finance Minister.
Penny Wong, is the first Asian-born(Malaysia) person to hold an Australian cabinet position and She is also Australia’s first openly gay female parliamentarian.

Paytm Reappoints Vijay Shekhar Sharma as MD & CEO and to Invest Rs 950 cr in PGIL

On May 21 2022, the One 97 Communications Limited (OCL), which operates under Paytm brand, has reappointed its founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma as its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The tenure of 5 years which will be effective from December 19, 2022, to December 18, 2027.

  • Paytm’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Madhur Deora has been re-appointed by the company’s board as a whole-time director till May 19, 2027.

Paytm to invest Rs 950 cr in Paytm General Insurance in tranches
The One97 Communications, which operates under Paytm brand, has formed a joint venture general insurance company – Paytm General Insurance Limited (PGIL), in which Paytm has committed to invest Rs 950 crore over a period of 10 years.

Key Points
i.The proposal to set up the joint venture firm Paytm General Insurance Limited (PGIL) was approved by the board on May 20 2022.
ii.Initially, One97 Communications (OCL) will hold a 49 percent stake in PGIL while the remaining 51 percent stake is to be owned by OCL’s MD& CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma led VSS Holding Private Limited (VHPL).
iii.Post the investment, Paytm will hold 74 percent stake in PGIL, reducing VHPL’s stake in the company to 26 percent.
iv.Following the investment, PGIL will become a subsidiary of the OCL.
v.PGIL plans to register for and undertake general insurance business defined under Section 2(6B) of the Insurance Act, 1938 (“Insurance Act”).

  • Infosys also offers Performance Stock Units (PSU’s) of 1,04,000 shares to 6 KMPs (Key Managerial Personnel) and another 3,75,760 shares to 88 other senior executives of the organisation under the Infosys Expanded Stock Ownership Plan 2019.

IDBI Bank has divested its entire holdings of 6,23,23,800 fully paid-up equity shares constituting 19.18% of the total equity share capital of Asset Reconstruction Company (India) Limited(ARCIL) to Avenue India Resurgence Pte. Limited. 
The value of the deal was not disclosed.

Dr. Jitendra Singh Launches Single National Portal for Biotech Researchers & Start-UpsUnion Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launches Single National PortalIn the spirit of One Nation, One Portal, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T), has established a Single National Portal-Biological Research Regulatory Approval Portal (BioRRAP)-for Biotechnology researchers and start-ups.
Need for the Single National Portal – BioRRAP
i.Currently, there is no mechanism in place to track the regulatory approvals required for a research proposal on a single platform.

  • To give such biological research more credibility and recognition, the Indian government has created a web system in which any research that requires regulatory monitoring will be designated by a unique ID called “BioRRAP ID.”

Significance Of the BioRRAP Portal:
i.The Portal will also enable stakeholders to view the approvals granted to a specific application using a unique BioRRAP ID.
ii.This one-of-a-kind BioRRAP portal was developed by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), (MoS&T).The portal is a step toward making Ease of Doing Science and Scientific research and Ease of Start-ups in India.
India: A Global Bio-Manufacturing Hub on the Rise
i.India is the third largest biotechnology destination in the Asia-Pacific region and is among the top 12 global biotechnology destinations.
ii.The Indian biotechnology industry is estimated to contribute 19 % to the global biotechnology market by 2025, up from 3 percent in 2017.

New Species Of Venomous Snake Discovered in Meghalaya
New species of venomous snake registered from NortheastA team of herpetologists have discovered a new species of venomous snake – Trimeresurus mayaae or Maya’s Pit viper from Umroi Military station in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya.

  • The study was published in PLOS One, an international, peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication.
  • The snake has been named Maya’s Pit Viper after the Maya,late mother of army officer Col Yashpal Singh Rathee.

Key Information
i. The new species was assumed to be a common species found in Meghalaya, Mizoram, and even Guwahati. However the subsequent research disclosed that the species and Pope’s pit viper have highly distinct hemepenis (the copulatory organ).
ii. The name of the pit viper, recognised as Trimeresurus mayaae, is also believed to allude to maya, meaning the supernatural powers, or the illusion related to local legends.
iii. The snake looked very similar to Pope’s pit viper but the colour of the eyes was different.
iv. This new snake was reported from Meghalaya and Mizoram, according to the research team.
v. The snake measured about 750 mm in length.

Note – Venom is a complex protein, mostly typical to a species and thus unravelling a new species will help understanding its venom and its impact on human life and perhaps will help save lives.

2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held at Istanbul; Turkey Tops Medal TallyIBA Women's World Boxing Championships 2022The 12th edition of 2022 International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championship(WWBC) was held at Başakşehir Youth and Sports Facility, Istanbul, Turkey from May 8 to May 20, 2022. The Turkey topped the medal tally with five gold and two bronze medals, was honoured as the best team of the Championships.

Key points:
i.India for the first time in the past four years, had won a total medal tally of 3, which includes one Gold and two Bronze.
ii.The  Indian Boxer Nikhat Zareen, who hails from Nizamabad city of Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana), won the gold in flyweight (52kg) division with 5-0 points against Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas. With this win she became the fifth Indian women boxer to win the World Championship.
iii.The other two Indian women boxers Manisha Moun (from Haryana) and Parveen Hooda(from Haryana) had won the bronze medals in 57kg and 63kg categories respectively.

ISSF Junior World Cup 2022 Held in Suhl, Germany from May 10-19, 2022

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup 2022 was held at Suhl in Germany from May 10 – 19, 2022. 

  • The Indian contingent was led by ace shooters Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary, they will lead a 66-member Indian contingent at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022.
  • Anish Bhanwala, Naamya Kapoor, Vivaan Kapoor, Udhayveer Sidhu, Vijayveer Sidhu, Esha Singh, and Rhythm Sangwan were among 51 shooters shortlisted by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022.

The Ministry of Sports sponsored 37 shooters competing in Olympic categories at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022. The NRAI sponsored 14 shooters competing in non-Olympic disciplines.
India won 33 medals at the ISSF Junior Shooting World Cup 2022
At the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022, the Indian junior shooting team came in first position overall. They won 33 medals in total, including 13 gold, 15 silver, and 5 bronze. 

  • With four gold medals, Italy came in second place.

Sift Kaur Samra of India won the individual women’s 50 metre (m) rifle 3 positions (3P) like Prone, the Standing and the Kneeling positions, event at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022 in Suhl, Germany. In the final, Sift Kaur Samra defeated Julie Johannessen of Norway.

  • Ashi Chouksey of India bagged bronze in the same event as well.

In the men’s 10m air rifle competition at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022, Indian shooter Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil defeated compatriot Abhinav Shaw in the gold-match match, giving India a 1-2 record.

  • Ramita of India bagged silver in the junior women’s 10m air rifle event, losing against Oceanne Muller of France.

Esha Singh & Saurabh Chaudhary won Gold in 10M Air Pistol Mixed Team Junior event:

Indian pistol pairs Esha Singh and Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in the 10M Air Pistol Mixed Team Junior event at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022.

  • Palak and Sarabjot Singh of India had settled for silver after losing the gold medal match to Esha and Saurabh in the 10M Air Pistol Mixed Team Junior event.
  • Ramita and Paarth Makhija also took silver in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team Junior, losing to Julia Piotrowska and Wiktor Sajdak of Poland.

i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/57/249 in December 2002 and proclaimed the 21st May of every year as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. 
ii.The first-ever World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development was observed on 21st May 2003.
iii.The UNGA resolution follows the UNESCO’s adoption of the 2001 Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, which recognises the need to enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence.”

International Tea Day 2022 – May 21 International Tea Day - May 21 2022

The United Nations(UN) International Tea Day is annually observed across the globe on 21st May to promote the production and consumption of tea across the globe and to create awareness about the significance of tea in combating global poverty and hunger.

  • The day is observed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) in collaboration with other relevant organisations. 
  • Tea is one of the most important cash crops in developing countries.

Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/74/241 on 19th December 2019 and proclaimed the 21st May of every year as the International Tea Day. 
ii.The first ever UN’s International Tea Day was observed on 21st May 2020.

Anti-Terrorism Day 2022 – May 21Anti-Terrorism Day - May 21 2022

Anti Terrorism Day is annually observed across India on 21st May to mark the death anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister (PM) Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991 at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. 

  • 21st May 2022 marks the 31st death anniversary of 6th former Prime Minister of India PM Rajiv Gandhi. 

Objective:

  • The day aims to wean away from the youth from terrorism and the cult of violence by highlighting the suffering of the common people. 
  • The day also aims to show how violence and terrorism are prejudicial to the national interest.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2022 – May 22 International Day for Biological Diversity - May 22 2022
The United Nations(UN)’s International Day for Biological Diversity is annually celebrated across the globe on 22nd May to create awareness about the importance of biodiversity and highlight the issues and provide an understanding of the importance of biodiversity as a global asset of high value to the future generation.
The theme of International Day for Biological Diversity 2022 is “Building a shared future for all life”.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/55/201 in 2000 and proclaimed the 22nd May of Every year as International Day for Biological Diversity. 
ii.The first ever International Day for Biological Diversity was observed on 22nd May 2001.
iii.On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity(IBD) 2022, Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Environment, Forest and Climate Change(MoEF&CC) along with Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ashwini Kumar Choubey and Minister for Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu Siva V Meyyanathan inaugurated special exhibition on “Biodiversity, Nutritional Security & Human Wellbeing” in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. 

  • He also released a special commemorative postal cover by India Post and A book titled “India, Naturally!” , India’s Living Biodiversity – A People’s resource fourth edition.

International Day to End Obstetric Fistula observed on May 23, 2022International Day to End Obstetric Fistula 2022 1

i.The United Nations (UN) International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF) is observed annually on May 23 since 2013 to raise awareness and promote action towards treating, preventing, and ending obstetric fistula, as well as urging post-surgery follow-up and tracking of fistula patients.
ii.For 2022, IDEOF is observed on the theme ‘End Fistula Now: Invest in Quality Healthcare, Empower Communities!’
iii.It is a hole in the birth canal and bladder caused by protracted, obstructed labour i.e. during childbirth, in the absence of timely medical care.

Kerala to Launch India’s 1st State-owned OTT Platform ‘CSpace’ in November

The Government of Kerala is set to launch India’s first State-owned over-the-top (OTT) platform named “CSpace” on 1st November 2022. This will be managed by Kerala State Film Development Corporation(KSFDC). The name of the OTT platform was revealed by Saji Cheriyan, the Minister for Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala at an event held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. 

  • The registration of the films to be streamed on CSpace will begin in June 2022. 
  • This will allow the user to watch a particular film by paying for it alone. This will ensure a long-lasting income for the producers like a pensionon their intellectual property.
