Overview of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Bihar & WB on August 22, 2025On August 22, 2025, Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi visited Bihar and West Bengal(WB), inaugurating and initiating development projects totaling more than Rs.18,000 crore.
Highlights of the Visit :
Overview: PM Narendra Modi dedicated various development projects worth around Rs 13,000 crore at Gaya in Bihar.
Aunta-Simaria Project in Gaya: During his visit to Bihar, PM Modi inaugurated the 8.15 kilometer (km) long Aunta-Simaria bridge project on National Highway (NH-31) in Gaya, Bihar.
- The project also includes a 1.86 km long six-lane bridge built across Ganga river, constructed at a cost of more than Rs 1,870 crore.
4-Lane Bakhtiyarpur to Mokam Section: PM Modi also inaugurated the 4-lane Bakhtiyarpur to Mokama section of NH-31 worth around Rs 1,900 crore.
Projects Launched in WB: PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated several important development projects worth over Rs 5,200 crore in Kolkata, WB.

I-T Bill 2025 gets Presidential assent, new Act to be effective from April 1, 2026In August 2025, the President Droupadi Murmu has given approval to the Income-Tax Act (I-T Act), 2025 and the same was notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoLJ) through a gazette notification.
About Income-Tax Act (I-T Act), 2025:
Implementation : The new law will come into effect from April 01, 2026.
- The new law will replace the decades old I–T Act, 1961, with a modern and simpler version to enhance ease of compliance.
Key Features: The new act does not impose any new tax rate and removes redundant provisions.
Structure: The number of sections reduced from 819 in I-T Act, 1961 to 536 and the number of chapters from 47 to 23.
Modern Tools: The total word count has been brought down from 5.12 lakh to 2.6 lakh.
- For the first time, the Act introduces 39 new tables and 40 new formulas for clarity and ease of reference.
Major Change: A major change in the I-T Act, 2025 is the renaming of the Assessment Year (AY) and Financial Year (FY) to ‘Tax Year’, to avoid confusions.

GoI Constituted Rajiv Gauba-led Panels to Drive Next-Gen Reforms and Viksit Bharat GoalsIn August 2025, the Government of India (GoI) constituted two High-Powered Groups (HPGs) of secretaries, technocrats, and economists, chaired by Rajiv Gauba, full-time member of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) and former Cabinet Secretary.
- These HPGs were formed after Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s 2025 Independence speech, where he emphasized the need for next-generation reforms and announced the formation of a task force for it.

- These groups will include the Director Generals (DGs) of industry chambers such as: Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
- HPGs also include industry leaders like: Dr. Pawan Kumar, Chairman of Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation (IN-SPACe), Goenka; Human Resources(HR) firm head Manish Sabharwal; and Janmejay Sinha, Chairperson of Boston Consulting Group India, as members of one of the committees.
Oversight: These panels are closely collaborating with ministerial committees chaired by Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) and Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence(MoD), providing robust political backing and facilitating faster implementation of reforms.
Deregulation: A state-level deregulation committee, headed by Cabinet Secretary TVS Swaminathan, has been established to resolve regulatory bottlenecks within the states.
Indian Army Signs MoU with Bharti Airtel to Strengthen Connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh
In August 2025, Dao Division of the Indian Army (IA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharti Airtel to enhance digital and mobile connectivity in the forward areas of Dibang Valley and Anjaw districts of Arunachal Pradesh (AR).

In August 2025, Department of Posts (DoP) (also known as India Post), Ministry of Communications (MoC), Government of India (GOI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) during the 30th Foundation Day Celebration of AMFI in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- The MoU was signed by Manisha Bansal Badal, General Manager(GM) (Business Development), DoP, and V N Chalasani, Chief Executive, AMFI, in the presence of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman, Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

- Currently, India holds the position of President of the AIBD General Conference since 2022, which ends in August 2025.

ACC Approves Appointment of Rajit Punhani as CEO of FSSAI in Major ReshuffleIn August 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi , approved the appointment of Rajit Punhani, a 1991 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
- Rajit Punhani, who currently held the position of Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), will succeed Ganji Kamala V. Rao upon his retirement on 31st August 2025.
- The appointment was part of a major top-level bureaucratic reshuffle involving senior IAS and Indian Postal Service (IPoS) officers across various ministries and departments of the Government of India (GoI).

Veteran CPI Leader and former MP Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy Passed Away
On August 22, 2025, Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passed away at the age of 83 in Hyderabad, Telangana. He was born on 25 March 1942 in Kondravpally village of Mahbubnagar district of Hyderabad State (Present Telangana).

Leadership in CPI: In 2012, he was elected the General Secretary of the CPI. He was re-elected in 2015 at Puducherry and 2018 at Kollam (Kerala).
- He stepped down in 2019, despite his leadership schedule to continue till 2021.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition 2025 – August 23The United Nations (UN) International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is observed every year on 23rd August to honour the memory of all people who suffered under the transatlantic slave trade during the colonial era.
- The annual observance is led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Background:
Proclamation: The 29th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 1997 adopted Resolution 29 C/40, declaring 23 August as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
Promotion: On 29 July 1998, UNESCO’s Director-General issued Circular CL/3494, inviting Ministers of Culture of all member states to promote the observance of the Day.
Observance: The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first observed in Haiti on 23 August 1998.
Why 23 August?
On the night of 23 August 1791, self-liberated enslaved people in Saint Domingue (present-day Haiti and Dominican Republic) launched a revolt against French colonial rule.
- This uprising was a turning point that played a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
National Space Day 2025 – August 23
The National Space Day (NSpD) is observed across India on 23 August to honor the historic success of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO’s)Chandrayaan-3 Mission and the successful deployment of the ‘Pragyan Rover’.
- On 23rd August 2023, Chandrayaan-3 made a safe landing on the Moon’s South Pole, deployed the Pragyan Rover, and made India the 4th country to land on the Moon and the 1st to land near its South Pole.
- 23rd August 2025 marks the celebration of the 2nd NSpD.
- 2025 Theme: “Aryabhatta to Gaganyaan: Ancient Wisdom to Infinite Possibilities”.
Background:
Declaration : In August 2023, the Government of India(GoI) announced that 23rd August would be observed every year as National Space Day (NSpD) to commemorate the success of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission.
- The declaration was made by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi during his meeting with the ISRO at the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC) Mission Control Facility (MCF) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
First Observance: NSpD was celebrated for the first time in 2024.
2025 Events:
2025 celebrations: The NSpD 2025 celebration was held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi(Delhi) and featured exhibitions, seminars, competitions, and educational outreach initiatives such as ‘Space on Wheels’ and ‘ISRO Space Tutor’.
