Overview of PM Modi’s Visit to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from 18th to 19th June 2024 Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar from 18th to 19th June 2024.
i.On 18th June 2024, PM Modi addressed the Kisan Samman Sammelan in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP). This marked PM Modi’s 1st visit to his constituency, Varanasi, after being elected to the 18th Lok Sabha (Lower House) for a 3rd consecutive term.
- PM Modi granted certificates to over 30,000 women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) as Krishi Sakhis under the Krishi Sakhi Convergence Program (KSCP).
ii.On 19th June 2024, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of the Nalanda University near Rajgir, Bihar.
- PM Modi also visited the ancient ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara and planted a sapling of Bodhi tree in the NU campus brought from Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
DGCA Extended Licence of Maharishi Valmiki International Airport of Ayodhya
On 19th June 2024, The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has extended the licence of Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh (UP). It has granted licence for a period of 5 years.
Points to Note:
i.In December 2023, DGCA had granted an aerodrome licence to the Valmiki International Airport. The Airport was developed by Airport Authority of India (AAI) at cost of Rs 350 crore.
ii.In January 2024, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi had approved the proposal to declare Ayodhya Airport as an “International Airport” and named it “Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham”.

WEF’s Energy Transition Index 2024: India Ranked 63rd; Sweden TopsOn 19th June 2024, The World Economic Forum (WEF) in partnership with Accenture released its annual report titled “Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2024”. According to the report, India has been ranked 63rd on the global Energy Transition Index (ETI) 2024.
- The report noted that India has improved its rank by 3 places (India was ranked at 67th spot in 2023), due to significant improvement in domains of energy equity, security and sustainability.
- Sweden reclaimed the top spot in the ETI 2024 with an ETI score 78.4, followed by Denmark (75.2) and Finland (74.5) in 2nd and 3rd rank respectively.
- According to the report, Estonia, Ethiopia, and Lebanon have seen the fastest improvements in last 5 years.

CERT-In and Mastercard India Forge MoU to Enhance India’s Cyber Resilience in Financial SectorOn 19th June 2024, Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mastercard India, to promote cooperation and information sharing in the area of Cyber Security related to financial sector.
About the MoU:
i.According to the MoU, both entities will leverage their shared expertise related to financial sector in various fields such as: cyber security incident response, capacity building, sharing cyber threat intelligence specific to financial sector and advanced malware analysis.
ii.Mastercard and CERT-In will conduct training programs and workshops for cyber capacity building, latest market trends and best practices to improve cyber security of financial sector organisations.
iii.Both entities will also share relevant cyber threat trends, technical information, threat intelligence, and vulnerability reports to bolster the financial sector information security in India.

It has been designated to act as National agency for incident response under Section 70B of the Information Technology Act, 2000. It operates 24×7 incident response Help Desk to offers Incident Prevention and Response services and Security Quality Management Services.

NSE Launches Nifty India Tourism Index to Track Travel & Tourism Stocks NSE Indices Limited, a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE India), has launched ‘Nifty India Tourism Index’, a new thematic index to track the performance of stocks from the Nifty 500 Index that represent the travel and tourism sector.
Index Details:
i.The index’s base date is 1 April 2005, and the base value is 1000.
ii.The Nifty India Tourism Index aligns with NSE’s vision to provide innovative indices in line with market trends.
iii.The index will be reconstituted semi-annually (twice a year) (companies in the index can change) and rebalanced quarterly (the weightage of each company can adjust).
iv.The index will track a maximum of 30 companies from the Nifty 500, focused on the travel and tourism sector.
v.Currently, it consists of 17 stocks, with weightage based on their periodic capped free-float market capitalisation.
- No single stock can account for more than 20% of the index.
Points to note:
i.The index has delivered a significant gain of 41.98% over the past year and boasts a 5-year Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 19.49%.
- Since its inception in 2005, the index has generated a CAGR of 12.19%.
ii.The index will serve as a benchmark for asset managers and a reference for passive funds, including Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), index funds, and structured products.
iii.This index will facilitate the creation of products, which will create opportunities for asset managers and investors in the tourism industry, offering tools for investors to capitalise on its growth potential.

i.The Government of India (GoI) actively frames policies related to tourism to promote India as a leading destination for international tourism expenditure.
ii.Economic Contribution: Travel and tourism contribute approximately USD 199.6 billion to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

RBI Cancels City Co-operative Bank’s Licence Over Inadequate Capital
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the licence of the City Co-operative Bank Limited, Mumbai (Maharashtra) for lacking adequate capital and earning prospects and has failed to comply with the requirements of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
- The City Co-operative Bank has been prohibited from conducting the business of banking with effect from June 19 2024, which includes acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits.
i.An order for winding up the bank and appointing a liquidator has also been requested from the Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies(CC and RCS), Maharashtra.
ii.On liquidation, every depositor will be eligible to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to Rs 5 lakh only from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC). About 87% of depositors are eligible to collect their whole deposit amount from DICGC.
iii.DICGC has already paid Rs 230.99 crore of the total insured deposits as of June 14, 2024, in accordance with the depositors’ willingness to participate.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Assumes charge as Chairman of IIPA for 3rd Consecutive Term Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions(MoPP&P) has assumed the charge as Chairman of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) for the 3rd consecutive term at the IIPA campus in New Delhi, Delhi. He has been serving as Chairman of the IIPA since 2020.

i.Dr. Jitendra Singh is a Physician specialising in diabetes and endocrinology. He has also contributed to newspapers as a columnist and he has authored 8 books.

WestBridge Capital Sells 1.75% Stake in AU Small Finance Bank For Rs 845 crore
Westbridge Capital, a private equity firm, has sold its 1.75% stake (1.30 crore shares) in Jaipur (Rajasthan) – based AU Small Finance Bank(SFB) limited for Rs 845.10 crore through an open market transaction.
- The shares were sold at an average price of Rs 650.08 each
- Westbridge Capital, through its subsidiary Westbridge Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) I, sold shares of AU SFB through a wholesale deal on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
- Westbridge Capital’s stake in AU Small Finance Bank has decreased from 3.82% to 2.07% after the stake sale.
Note: Westbridge AIF I is a fund registered under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations, 2012 as a Category II AIF.

World Athletics Continental Gold Tour 2024: Neeraj Chopra Secures Gold in the Javelin Throw in Paavo Nurmi Games 2024Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra secured a gold medal with 85.97m in the third attempt in men’s javelin throw at Paavo Nurmi Games 2024, a World Athletics Continental Tour (Gold level) event held on 18th June 2024 in Turku, Finland (Europe).
- Finland’s Toni Keranen claimed the silver medal with a personal best throw of 84.19m, and Oliver Helander (Finland) won the bronze medal with 83.96m.
- Max Dehning, the 19-year-old German, become the youngest man to throw 90m earlier in February 2024, finished seventh with 79.84m.

- Arjun finished with 6.5 points after winning four games and splitting the points in 5 rounds.
- He completed the final (9th) round against Armenia’s GM Manuel Petrosyan in a draw.

International Day of Celebration of the Solstice 2024 – June 21 The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Celebration of the Solstice is annually observed across the globe on June 21 to highlight the importance and significance of solstice in various religions and ethnic cultures across the globe.
- Solstice is that the point at which the Sun is at its greatest distance from the world and equinox is when space is that the lowest.
- Every year, June 21 is marked as the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere of the world. This day marks the 1st day of summer and longest day and shortest night of the year
Background:
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/73/300 on 20th June 2019 and proclaimed the 21st June of every year as the International Day of the celebration of the solstice to promote awareness around the astronomical events of Solstice and Equinox.
About Solstice:
i.A solstice is a natural phenomenon which happens twice a year typically falls on either June 20th or 21st and December 21st or 22nd.
- During the solstice, the tilt of the Earth’ axis is approximately 23.5 degrees at its maximum, either pointing towards or away from the sun.
iii.Summer Solstice which usually falls around June 21, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere.
iv.Winter Solstice which usually falls around December 21marks the 1st day of winter and shortest day and longest night of the year. It occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.
Note: The word solstice is derived from the Latin word ‘sol’ (Sun) and ‘sistere’(to stand still).
About Equinox:
i.The word ‘Equinox’ is derived from the Latin word aequus (equal) and nox (night).
ii.It occurs twice a year when the Sun is above the Earth’s equator and the day and night time are of approximately equal duration.
iii.Spring equinox occurs on 20th March, which marks the beginning of summer. Autumnal equinox occurs on 23rd September, which marks the beginning of autumn.
Significance of Solstice and Equinox:
- The solstices and the equinoxes are connected with seasons, harvists and livelihood.
- The summer solstice marks a productive crop season and the fertility of the Earth.
- The spring equinox signified birth, renewal, growth and the arrival of the planting season.
World Music Day – June 21 2024World Music Day is annually observed across the globe on June 21 to recognises the power of Music.This day is also known as ‘Fete de la Musique’, which means ‘Festival of Music’ in French.
- The year 2024 marks the 42nd anniversary of the celebration of Fete de la Musique.
- The day has become a symbol of unity and inclusivity, bringing people together through the universal language of music.

Background:

ii.On the occasion of the European year of Music in 1985, Fête de la Musique was adopted as the global event. The day is currently observed in approximately 700 cities around 120 countries across the globe.
Significance of World Music Day:
i.It provides a platform for both amateur and professional artists to express themselves through their craft.
ii.This day commemorates the transformative power of music, fostering a sense of community and unity among people from all walks of life under the inspiring tagline ‘Faites de la musique’, which translates to ‘Make music’.
Events in India 2024:
A two-week cultural celebration has been organised in India between June 14 to June 30 2024.
- 2024 edition of the festival will feature a variety of concerts, workshops, and panel discussions across multiple cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Pune, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Trivandrum, and Pondicherry.

West Bengal Government Launched first-of-its-kind Centralised Admission Portal for Undergraduate College Admissions
On 19th June 2024, The West Bengal government launched first-of-its-kind “Centralised Admission Portal” for admission to undergraduate courses in state government colleges and recognised universities.
- The portal was launched by Bratya Basu, School and Higher Education Minister, West Bengal at the Bikash Bhavan in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Key Points:
i.The portal offers admission for students to 7,217 undergraduate courses in over 400 colleges and 16 universities across the state.
ii.Any student from across the country, can apply for maximum 25 undergraduate courses through the portal.
- Also, portal does not offers admission in colleges like: Presidency University, Jadavpur University, minority colleges, among others.
iii.The portal will start registrations and applications process between 24th June, 2024 and 7th July, 2024.
