MoJS launched E-flows Monitoring System to Monitor Ganga River Cleanup processUnion Minister, C.R. Patil, Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) launched the Environmental flows (E-flows) Monitoring System to monitor the cleaning progress of the river Ganga. It was launched during a programme when the Union Minister was reviewing the progress of the cleaning projects under the Namami Ganga Mission in New Delhi, Delhi.
- It is developed by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) works under the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, as part of the Aviral Ganga component.
- This marks a major milestone towards ensuring the continuous and sustainable flow of the Ganga River.
Key People: The launch event was attended by Dr. Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Minister of State (MoS) for Jal Shakti, Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary (Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation), Rajeev Kumar, Director General (National Mission for Clean-NMCG).
About E-flows Monitoring System:
i.It is an important part of the Platform for Real-time Analysis of Yamuna And Ganga and their tributaries(PRAYAG) portal which is a real-time monitoring centre for the planning and monitoring of projects, quality of river water, among others.
ii.The portal includes online dashboards such as the Ganga Tarang Portal, Project Management Tool Dashboard and the Ganga Districts Performance Monitoring System.
iii.The platform will offer real-time analysis of water quality of river Ganga, Yamuna and their tributaries, and monitors Namami Gange programme activities.
iv.It will also monitor the performance of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) through the Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System (OCEMS).
Significance:
The system will use the data from quarterly reports by the Central Water Commission(CWC) which will further help to monitor key parameters such as: in-flow, out-flow, and mandated E-flow across 11 projects along the Ganga main stream.
Note: In October 2018, the Centre Government mandated minimum E-flow for various stretches of the Ganga River to be maintained year-round.
- NMCG issued the flow specifications essential for preservation of ecological balance and to protect the aquatic life as well as to ensure sustainability amidst increasing water usage demands.

IEP’ Global Peace Index 2024: India stands at 116th Rank out of 163 countries; Iceland Tops the list i.According to the 18th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2024 released by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), India is ranked 116th out of 163 countries, climbing 10 positions from 2023.
- The list is topped by Iceland since 2008 followed by Ireland(2nd), Austria(3rd), New Zealand(4th), and Singapore(5th).
ii.Europe has been the most peaceful region in the world and is home to eight of the ten most peaceful countries since the start of the GPI.
iii.The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remained the world’s least peaceful region with major crises in Yemen and Sudan becoming the reasons of its poor rating.

India Develops 4% of Global Antibacterial Agents : WHO On 14th June 2024, The World Health Organisation (WHO) released its annual report titled “2023 Antibacterial agents in clinical and preclinical development: an overview and analysis”. The report evaluates the pipeline of antibacterial agents, including antibiotics, in clinical and preclinical development across the world.
Key Points:
i.According to the report, 84% of antibacterial Research and Development (R&D) is mainly concentrated in high-income countries, with another 12% in upper –middle income countries including, China, Russia and South Africa which contributed 7%, 3% and 2% of agents respectively.
ii.While, Lower-Middle Income Countries (LMICs) including India, contributed 4% of the total share of anti-bacterial agents in clinical development by location of research facilities. India contributed only 1% to the global antibacterial R&D.
iii.As per the report, the number of antibacterial agents in the clinical pipeline, including antibiotics, increased from 80 (in 2021) to 97 (in 2023) worldwide.

Gautam Adani Meets Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay; Signed MoU to Establish 570 MW Hydroelectric Plant Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, met with Dasho Tshering Tobgay, the Prime Minister (PM) of Bhutan and announced the signing of an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) for a 570 Megawatt (MW) green hydro electric plant in the Chukha province, Bhutan.
- This collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable energy development in Bhutan, aligning with global efforts towards carbon neutrality.
About Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC):
i.DGPC, the only generation utility in Bhutan is a subsidiary of Druk Holding and Investments Limited(DHI).
ii.DGPC was formed in December 2007 to develop and manage Bhutan’s hydropower resources and assets.

i.Adani met with the PM of Bhutan to discuss bilateral cooperation in Thimphu, Bhutan.

MEA & SBI Signed MoU to Enhance Digital Payment Services for Users eMigrate PortalOn 15th June 2024, The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India (GoI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India (SBI) to provide additional digital payment services of the SBI through SBIePay, a payment gateway, to the Indian migrant workers, Recruiting Agents (RAs) and other users of the eMigrate portal(https://emigrate.gov.in).
- The MoU will come into effect after the successful integration of SBIePay, the payment gateway of SBI with the eMigrate portal.
Key Signatories: The MoU was signed by Bramha Kumar, Joint Secretary Overseas Employment (OE) and Protector General of Emigrants (PGE), MEA; and Neelesh Dwivedi, General Manager (Network-I) of SBI, at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.
Key Points:
i.The MoU will enable users of the eMigrate portal to make various emigration-related payments with ease. This will offer a cost-free, efficient, and secure method for handling emigration-related fees.
ii.This will streamline the payment process and strengthen the overall framework for safe and legal migration of Indian workers abroad.
iii.Under this MoU, users will be able to make transactions through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), credit or debit cards, and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) via net banking of all Indian banks.
- All such transactions are exempted from transaction charges.
About eMigrate Project:
i.The eMigrate Project, launched in 2014, was designed to guide and support the Indian workers heading to Emigration Check Required (ECR)countries for employment.
ii.This aims to simplify and secure the migration experience for Indian migrants.
iii.This is a unified platform for Foreign Employers (FEs), registered RAs, and insurance companies that offer the Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana (PBBY), to promote seamless and legal migration processes.
iii.The portal includes a mechanism enabling the voluntary registration of emigrants holding Emigration Check Not Required (ECNR) category passports seeking employment overseas.

RBI Imposes Rs 1.45 Cr Penalty on Central Bank of India
On 11th June 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1,45,50,000 on the Central Bank of India (CBI) for non-compliance with specific directives issued by RBI on ‘Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’ and ‘Customer Protection – Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic Banking Transactions’.
i.CBI sanctioned a working capital demand loan to a Corporation against amounts receivable from Government by way of subsidies.
ii.CBI failed to credit (shadow reversal) the amount involved in a few instances of unauthorised electronic transaction to the customer’s account within 10 working days from the date of notification by the customer and resolve complaints and provide compensation to certain customers within 90 days from the date of receipt of such complaints.
Note: The penalty was imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under sections 47 A (1) (c), 46 (4) (i), and 51(1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.The Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE 2022) of CBI was based on its financial position as of 31st March 2024.

Sahitya Akademi Announced Yuva Puraskar, Bal Sahitya Puraskar Winners for 2024On 15th June 2024, the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture chaired by Madhav Kaushik, President, Sahitya Akademi declared a list of 24 recipients of its Bal Sahitya Puraskar and 23 winners of its Yuva Puraskar for the year 2024.
Key Points:
i.The award is given in 24 Indian languages (of which 22 languages are recognized as official languages in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution and other two languaes are – English and Rajasthani).
ii.The winners of Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar and Yuva Puraskar 2024 will receive the award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50,000 each at a ceremony to be held later.
iii.The winners of Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar will be given for 4 Stories, 5 Short stories, 7 Novels, 6 books of Poetry, 1 Play, and 1 Historical fiction.
iv.The Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar will be given 10 Poetry books, 7 Short Stories, 2 collection of Articles, 1 Essays, 1 Novel, 1 Ghazal and 1 Memoir.
About Sahitya Akademi:
i.It is the 2nd highest literary award given by Government of India (GoI) annually, following the Jnanpith Award.
ii.It was established by GoI in 1954 and 1st Sahitya Akademi awards were given in 1955.

Wildlife Filmmaker Shri Subbiah Nallamuthu Won V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award at 18th MIFFSubbiah Nallamuthu, a renowned wildlife filmmaker from Chennai(Tamil Nadu) was honoured with the Dr V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award during the inauguration of the 18th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF 2024).
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, a trophy, and a citation.
About MIFF 2024:
i.The event is being held from 15th to 21st June 2024 at National Film Development Corporation – Films Division Complex (NFDC-FDC), Mumbai, Maharashtra.
ii.The 18th MIFF for Documentary, Short Fiction, and Animation film was organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting(MIB).
iii.MIFF 2024 was inaugurated by the Minister of State (MoS) L. Murugan, MIB.
iv.A total of 314 films from 59 countries across 61 languages featured in the MIFF 2024.
About Subbiah Nallamuthu:
i.Subbiah Nallamuthu is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) (Pune, Maharashtra), who has made exceptional contributions to wildlife cinematography.
ii.He gained prominence for his work on “Living on the Edge”, India’s longest-running environment series.
- The series won the Wildscreen Panda Award, ‘Green Oscars’ of the international wildlife film and TV industry, in 1996.
iii.He has also worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as a high-speed cameraman.
He has worked with networks like National Geographic Channel, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Channel 4, Discovery, Animal Planet, ZDF(Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen), and Doordarshan.
iv.He is a regular jury member of the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and has also served as the Jury Chairperson (non feature film) at 52nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2021.
v.He has made innumerable documentaries on the environment and the interaction between humans and ecosystems including Earth File (2000) for BBC World and The World Gone Wild (2001) for Animal Planet.

Former Odisha Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare Passed AwayFormer Governor of Odisha Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare passed away at the age of 95 in New Delhi, Delhi. He was born on 10 December 1928 in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India (now Mumbai, Maharashtra).
About Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare:
i.He also served as President of Supreme Court Bar Association twice.
ii.Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare was a senior Congress leader and practiced as a Senior Advocate before the Supreme Court of India.
iii.He was elected to the Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) for 3 terms in 1980 and re-elected in 1982 and 1988.
iv.He served as the Governor of Odisha from 2007 to 2013.
v.He also served as Chairman of the United Nations (UN) Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities.
Book: In 2024, Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare published his memoir “The Arc of Memory: My Life and Times.”
Srinivas Hegde, Former ISRO Scientist & Mission Director of Chandrayaan-1, Passed Away
Srinivas Hedge, former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist and Mission Director of Chandrayaan-1 (the 1st lunar mission of India launched in 2008), passed away at the age of 71 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
- He joined ISRO in 1978 and served for over 3 decades and was involved in many ISRO missions under the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) formerly known as ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC).
- After retiring from ISRO in 2014, Hegde joined Bengaluru-based start-up Team Indus.

International Day of Family Remittances 2024 – June 16 The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is annually observed across the globe on 16 June to honour the dedication of millions of migrants who support their families and communities through remittances.
The theme of the IDFR 2023–2024 #FamilyRemittances campaign is, “Digital Remittances Towards Financial Inclusion and Cost Reduction.”
Background:
i.On 16 February 2015, the IDFR, a universally recognised observance, was adopted by the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
ii.On 12 June 2018, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/72/281, proclaiming the 16 June of every year as the International Day of Family Remittances.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2024 – June 17The United Nations (UN)’s World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (WDCDD) is annually observed across the globe on 17 June to raise awareness and combat international issues linked to Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought (DLDD).
- 17th June 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the UNCCD, which was established on 17th June 1994.
- The 2024 theme of WDCDD is, “United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future.”
- The global observance of the WDCDD 2024 was hosted by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, a signatory to the UNCCD.
Background:
i.In 1994, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/49/115 proclaiming the 17 June of every year as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
ii.The 1st ever World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was observed on 17 June 1995.

World Crocodile Day 2024 – June 17World Crocodile Day, also known as World Croc Day, is annually observed across the globe on June 17 to raise awareness and highlight the plight of endangered crocodiles and alligators around the world.
- World Croc Day 2024 is organised by the Crocodile Research Coalition, a Belize-based nonprofit organisation, in conjunction with the Belize Zoo.
- Land encroachment, Dredging, Pollution, Culling and invasion of other aggressive species can lead to huge extinction of these reptiles.
Note:
i.There are 26 species of crocodilian that have been identified and classified in the reptile order – Crocodilia.
ii.India is home to three species of crocodiles
- Mugger or Marsh Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris)
- Estuarine or Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
- Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus)
