Cargo Handling at Major Indian Ports Increases 4.3% to 855 MT in FY25According to official data released by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) in May 2025, 12 major ports of India registered a 4.3% increase in cargo handling, from 819 Million Tonnes (MT) in Financial Year 2023-24 (FY24) to approximately 855 MT in FY25. This growth signifies the resilience and capacity of major Indian ports in accommodating increasing trade volumes.

  • Also, this increase in traffic was mainly attributed by higher container throughput (10%), fertilizer cargo handling (13%), Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants (POL) cargo handling (3%), and handling of miscellaneous commodities (31%) compared to FY24.

i.Two major Indian Ports i.e. Odisha-based Paradip Port Authority (PPA) and Kandla (Gujarat)-based Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) have achieved a historic milestone of breaching the 150 MT cargo handling mark in FY25, reaffirming their status as key hubs of maritime trade and operational excellence.
ii.In FY25, Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants (POL), comprising crude oil, petroleum products, and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)/LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) , emerged as the top cargo category at India’s major ports, accounting for 254.5 MT or 29.8% of the total cargo handled.

Union Cabinet Approved HCL-Foxconn JV to Set up Rs 3,706 Crore Semiconductor Facility at Jewar, UP In May 2025, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has approved a Joint Venture (JV) between Noida (Uttar Pradesh, UP) based HCL Group and Taiwanese electronics company Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Limited (Foxconn), to set up semiconductor unit near Jewar Airport at the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) in Uttar Pradesh (UP).

  • This marks the 6th semiconductor unit approved by the union cabinet under Rs 76, 000 crore India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
  • Also, this will be the 1st –ever semiconductor chip unit in UP to be established under ISM.

i.The new proposed semiconductor unit will be developed with an estimated cost of Rs 3,706 crore, of which around Rs 1,500 crore will be provided by the Government of India (GoI) as part of incentives under the chip manufacturing scheme.
ii.The proposed unit is expected to start production in 2027, and will be able to meet nearly 40% of India’s local demand for semiconductor chips.

Union MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh dedicated India’s first publicly funded DST-ICGEB ‘Bio-foundry’ in New DelhiIn May 2025, Union Minister of State(Mos) (Independent Charge, IC), Dr. Jitendra Singh,Ministry of Science & Technology(MoS&T), dedicated India’s first of its kind public funded Department of Science and Technology (DST)-ICGEB ‘Bio-foundry’ during the 31st Board Meeting of Governors of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) held in New Delhi, Delhi. He described India as the emerging global biotech destination.

  • He also highlighted that India’s bio economy has seen an exponential rise from USD 10 billion in 2014 to USD 165.7 billion in 2024, with a target to achieve USD 300 billion by 2030.

About ICGEB ‘Bio-foundry’ :
i.This state-of-the-art facility is designed to accelerate advancements in synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, and precision biotechnology.
ii.The Bio-foundry is a key component of India’s BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) policy, which was approved by the Government of India(GoI) in August 2024 to transform the nation’s bioeconomy by promoting sustainable and regenerative manufacturing practices.

India to Launch First Manned Deep Ocean Mission ‘Samudrayaan’ by End of 2026In May 2025, Balaji Ramakrishnan, Director of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), announced that India’s first manned deep ocean mission, ‘Samudrayaan’, will be launched by 2026.

  • The mission will use the manned submersible vehicle ‘Matsya’ to reach a depth of 6,000 metres (6 km) under the sea with 3 scientists.
  • ‘Samudrayaan’ is a part of India’s Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) aimed at exploring deep-sea resources and conducting scientific research.
  • The mission supports India’s aspirations in blue economy development, deep-sea mining, and underwater biodiversity studies.

Note:The announcement was made at the inaugural event of a five-day national training programme on the ‘Role of Fisheries in the Blue Economy’, jointly organized Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA) by at CMFRI in Kochi, Kerala.
Key Points:
i.NIOT, an autonomous society under MoES, is the implementing nodal agency of the deep ocean mission.
ii.“Matsya”, a 25-tonne 4th generation vehicle, developed with India’s indigenous technology, is specifically engineered to withstand pressure and temperature in the deeper ocean, with a hull made of titanium.
iv.The mission is expected to revolutionize India’s deep-sea research, opening avenues for the assessment of both living and non-living resources in the deep ocean.

  • The mission will be instrumental in collecting critical samples from the deeper oceanic zone, offer opportunities for scientists to understand the unique characteristics of the organism and the water in the region.

v.The launch is planned as a step-by-step process, and a crucial phase of the 500m depth trial is expected by the end of 2025.
About ‘Samudrajivah’:
i.‘Samudrajivah’ is an innovative technology, developed to focus on improved large-scale open sea farming.

  • This technology is currently in the demonstration phase.

ii.The electronically monitored submerged fish cages are designed for offshore regions, capitalizing on the nutritionally rich deep-sea environment to promote the fish growth.
iii.Having different sensors, Samudrajivah is capable of remote monitoring of individual fish biomass, growth and movement and water quality parameters.

MoC&I Prohibits use of Antimicrobials in the Aquaculture SectorIn May 2025, the Department of Commerce(DoC), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), in consultation with the Export Inspection Council(EIC), prohibited the use of several medically important antimicrobials in the Aquaculture sector.

  • The prohibition order was issued by the MoC&I under the Export (Quality Control and Inspection) Act, 1963, a legislative framework established to ensure the quality of India’s export commodities through systematic quality control and inspection measures.

Key Points:
i.Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in food-animal production for the purpose of promoting growth or preventing or controlling diseases, attributes as one of the drivers of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
ii.MoC&I added a list of antibiotics, antivirals and antiprotozoals that are prohibited from being used in culture of Shrimps, prawns or any other variety of fish and fishery products.
iii.MoC&I has banned the use of 12 antibiotic classes and 6 antibiotics, which fall under the antimicrobials authorized only for use in humans, permitted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its List of Medically Important Antimicrobials for Human Medicine.

C-DOT and Synergy Quantum Sign MoU to Jointly Develop Quantum Key Distribution Technology suited for Drone based systems
In May 2025, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier telecom Research & Development (R&D) institution under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications(MoC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bengaluru (Karnataka) based Synergy Quantum India Private Limited.

  • The agreement focuses on developing drone-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems using the decoy-based BB84 protocol with polarization encoding at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or above.

i.C-DOT and Synergy Quantum will combine their expertise to develop QKD technologies that can be integrated into drone platforms.
ii.This partnership will focus on creating solutions that are both cost-effective and scalable, facilitating widespread adoption in various applications.
iii.QKD is a secure communication method that uses quantum mechanics principles to enable two parties to produce a shared random secret key, which can then be used to encrypt and decrypt messages.
It ensures unbreakable encryption, making it highly suitable for sensitive data transmission.

IUCN SSC’s PSG Report 2023-25: Cross River Gorilla, Tapanuli Orangutan among 25 Most Endangered PrimatesIn May 2025, Gland(Switzerland) based Primate Specialist Group (PSG) of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Special Survival Commission (SSC) in collaboration with Louisiana, the United States of America(USA) based International Primatological Society(IPS) and Texas(USA) based Re:wild, has released 12th edition of the report titled “Primates in Peril: The World’s 25 Most Endangered Primates 2023 – 2025, which has listed species across Asia, Africa, Madagascar and South America region.

  • The 2023-25 report’s list has 6 species from across Africa, 4 from Madagascar, 9 from Asia, and 6 from Neotropics (Central & South America).
  • The Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli), found in Cameroon and Nigeria, and the Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), found in Sumatra (Indonesia) are among the top 25 most endangered primates list.

Highlights of the Report:
i.15 of the primates listed in the report 2023-25 were not listed on the previous report 2022-23 list.
ii.8 Primates such as Sahafray Sportive Lemur, Red-bellied Monkey, Northern Pygmy Slow Loris, Myanmar Snub-nosed Monkey, Bornean Banded Langur, Central American Squirrel Monkey have been listed for the first time
iii.9 Primates such as Red Ruffed Lemur, Cross River Gorilla, Pig-tailed Snub-nosed Langur, Cao-vit Gibbon, Olalla Brothers’ Titi, Peruvian Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey, Variegated Spider Monkey, Caatinga Titi Monkey and Pied Tamarin were listed on previous iterations but were subsequently removed to call attention to other highly threatened species.

India gifts 15 electric vehicles to Nepal for mountain dialogue
In May 2025, the Government of India(GoI)  gifted 15 Electric Vehicles (EVs) to Nepal to support the logistical arrangements of the inaugural Sagarmatha Sambaad, a global dialogue on climate change, which is scheduled from 16 to 18 May 2025 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

  • The vehicles were handed over by Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, to Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu.
  • The vehicles will be used for transporting delegates, officials, and guests attending the summit.

i.Sagarmatha Sambaad is a biennial, multi-stakeholder global dialogue initiated by the Government of Nepal. The first edition is themed “Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity”
ii.The dialogue aims to address the pressing impacts of climate change on mountainous regions and to foster regional and international cooperation for sustainable solutions.

Canara Bank Launched ‘CANARA TruEdge’ Savings and Current AccountIn May 2025, Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based Canara Bank, one of India’s leading Public Sector Bank (PSB), launched ‘CANARA TruEdge’, a specialized and unique feature-rich suite of Current and Savings Accounts.

  • This new offering is designed to address the unique banking requirements of institutional clients across the country, including various sectors like:  healthcare, education and religious organisations, as well as other non-individual entities.

i.It offers a zero initial deposit requirement for smooth onboarding. As bank maintains higher balances, the related benefits are expected to increase proportionally.
ii.Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based PSB, Union Bank of India (UBI) officially launched “Union Wellness Deposit “a new and innovative retail term deposit scheme in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

MSMEs merchandise export share increased to  45.7 % in FY24: SIDBI reportSmall Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has released a report titled ‘Understanding the Indian MSME Sector: Progress, and Challenges’ which report provides insights into the Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector based on a survey of 2,097 MSMEs across 19 sectors in manufacturing, services, and trading.

  • The number of registrations Udyam Registration Portal (URP) have surged to over 6.2 crore by March 2025, up from 2.5 crore in March 2024, indicating significant formalization within the sector.
  • With MSMEs contributing nearly 30% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing employment to over 11 crore individuals, empowering this sector is crucial for driving sustainable and long-term economic growth.

Key Findings:
i.Export Potential: MSMEs contribution to India’s total exports has steadily grown, reaching 43.59% in Financial Year 2022-23 (FY23), 45.73% in FY24, and 45.79% in FY25.
ii.Women Entrepreneurship: Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE 2023-24) shows female owned proprietary establishments increased from 22.9% in 2022-23 to 26.2% in 2023-24.

Uttarakhand Secures Rs 1910 Crore Funding from EIB for Urban Infrastructure Projects
In May 2025, Uttarakhand has secured Rs.1910 crore fund from Luxembourg based European Investment Bank (EIB) to enhance urban infrastructure development across four cities in Uttarakhand, under the Uttarakhand Urban Sector Development Agency (UUSDA).

  • The agreement is scheduled for signing in June 2025, following which the tender process will commence.
  • The funding was confirmed during project negotiations held between the Government of India (GoI), the Government of Uttarakhand, and EIB.

i.The funding will support projects in cities, Pithoragarh, Sitarganj, Rudrapur, and Kashipur, focusing on:

  • Pithoragarh: Development of drinking water and sewerage systems.
  • Sitarganj, Rudrapur, and Kashipur: Enhancement of drinking water supply infrastructure.

ii.Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared and reviewed by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the Ministry of Finance (MoF), GoI.
iii.The project aim to improve sanitation and access to clean drinking water in key urban areas, to raise living standards and accelerate the overall development of the state.

RBI Imposes Rs.2.72 Crore Penalty on SBI and Jana Small Finance Bank for Regulatory Non-Compliance
In May 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a total monetary penalty of Rs.2.72 crore on Mumbai(Maharashtra) based State Bank of India (SBI) and Bengaluru(Karnataka) based Jana Small Finance Bank (SFB) Limited for non-compliance with regulatory guidelines.

  • The penalties were levied under the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, following findings from the RBI’s supervisory evaluations.

i.SBI, India’s largest Public Sector Bank (PSB) was fined Rs.1.728 Crore for non-compliance with directions issued by the RBI related to:

  • Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions
  • Customer Protection – Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic Banking Transactions
  • Opening of Current Accounts by Banks – Need for Discipline

ii.Jana SFB, was imposed a penalty of Rs.1 crore for contravention of certain provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

Brazilian Microbiologist Mariangela Hungria Wins 2025 World Food PrizeOn May 13, 2025, the World Food Prize Foundation, based in Des Moines, Iowa (United States of America, USA), named Brazilian Microbiologist Dr. Mariangela Hungria as the winner of the 2025 World Food Prize.

  • The award honors Dr. Hungria’s groundbreaking work in developing biological alternatives to chemical fertilizers, significantly enhancing sustainable agriculture practices in Brazil and beyond.

i.She will officially receive the award at the World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium scheduled for October 2025 in Des Moines and a monetary prize of USD 500,000.
ii.She is the 10th woman to be honoured with the World Food Prize.

Former Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar Appointed as Chairman of UPSCIn May 2025, the Government of India (GoI) appointed Dr. Ajay Kumar, former Defence Secretary, Ministry of Defence (MoD) and retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1985 Kerala cadre, as the new Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for 6 years or until reaching the age of 65, whichever is earlier.

  • The appointment was approved by President of India Droupadi Murmu, under Article 316(1) of the Constitution of India, as per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoPP&P).
  • He succeeded Preeti Sudan whose tenure ended on 29th April 2025.

IOC Appointed Mikaela Jaworski as Chair of Coordination Commission for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic GamesIn May 2025, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board member, Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski, has been appointed as the new Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission, for the 2032 Olympic games, to be held at Brisbane, Australia. The appointment was made by IOC President, Thomas Bach, at an Executive Board meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

  • She will succeed Kristy Coventry, who is set to become the IOC President in June 2025
  • She will chair the Coordination Commission meeting in Brisbane( Australia) from May 20 to 22, 2025.

Key Points:
i.As a Commission Chair,Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski will oversee the planning and delivery of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, working in close partnership with the Organizing Committee, the Olympic Movement stakeholders, local authorities and International Sports Federations.
ii.Her role will be to ensure that all aspects of the project are developed and executed to the highest standards, creating an inclusive, sustainable and memorable Olympic experience for athletes, fans and communities.

i.Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworksi is a former equestrian athlete, represented Philippines internationally and won a gold medal in individual equestrian jumping at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.

NTPC Green Energy Appointed Sarit Maheshwari as CEO & Key Managerial Personnel
In May 2025, New Delhi (Delhi) based NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited (formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited), announced the appointment of Sarit Maheshwari as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and designated Key Managerial Personnel (KMP), effective from May 10, 2025.

  • He succeeded Rajiv Gupta, who was repatriated to NTPC Limited to serve in another role.

About Sarit Maheshwari:
i.Sarit Maheshwari has over 35 years of experience in the power sector.
ii.Before his appointment as CEO of NGEL, he served in key leadership roles across NTPC’s Renewable Energy(RE) subsidiaries:

  • CEO of NTPC Renewable Energy Limited(NTPCREL).
  • CEO of NTPC Rajasthan Green Energy Limited (NRGEL), a 74:26 joint venture between NGEL and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL).

iii. He also held various operational roles in NTPC, including Head of Project at NTPC Korba, one of NTPC’s major power plants.
Note: NGEL was incorporated in 2022. It is central to India’s target of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. The company focuses on large-scale solar, wind, and hybrid projects to support national climate commitments.

President Draupadi Murmu appointed SC Judge Surya Kant as Executive Chairman of NALSA
In May 2025, President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court (SC) Judge, as the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), effective May 14, 2025.

  • He will succeed Justice B R Gavai, Judge, Supreme Court of India.

i.He is currently the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
ii.Before his elevation to the Supreme Court in May 2019, he served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court(HC) and as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana HC.
ii.He will lead NALSA’s mission to provide accessible and free legal aid to all citizens, particularly those from Marginalized and economically weaker sections of society across India.
Note: The NALSA is a statutory body established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which came into effect on November 9, 1995.

India’s Kynan Chenai and Sabeera Haris Win Bronze at ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2025
In May 2025, Indian shooters Kynan Chenai and Sabeera Haris secured a bronze medal in the Trap Mixed Team event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup 2025, held from May 3 to 12, 2025 in Nicosia, Cyprus. This event was the third World Cup of the 2025 season.

  • They defeated Turkey’s Tolga Tuncer and Pelin Kaya with a narrow score of 34-33 in the final match.

i.The Indian pair finished 4th among 34 teams in the qualification round with a total score of 142 out of 150.
ii.The second Indian team comprising Shardul Vihan and Kirti Gupta finished 17th with a score of 137.
iii.China secured the gold medal in the trap mixed team event by defeating Poland 42–39 in the final. Poland earned the silver medal.
Overall Medal Tally :
i.Neutral Athletes topped the medal standings by winning 2 gold medals out of the 5 events conducted.
ii. China secured 2 medals – 1 gold and 1 silver.

Three Time Oscar Winning Filmmaker Robert Benton Passed AwayOn May 11, 2025, the three-time Oscar-winner, Screenwriter and Director, Robert Douglas Benton has passed away at the age of 92 at Manhattan in New York, the United States of America (USA). He was born on September 29, 1932, in Texas, Benton, the USA.

  • He received six Academy Award nominations throughout his distinguished career, winning three times.

About Robert Douglas Benton:
i.Robert Douglas Benton began his career as art director at Esquire magazine, where he helped start the magazine’s long standing Dubious Achievement Award.
ii.He was the co-writer for the film Bonnie and Clyde (1967), which revolutionized Hollywood with its bold storytelling and earned him an Oscar nomination.
iii.He made his directorial debut with the film “The Late Show” (1977).
iv.He was awarded the Academy Award for his film “Kramer vs Kramer” (1979) for the Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
v.His film, “Places in the Heart” (1984), earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
vi.His final directorial effort was Feast of Love in 2007 .
Awards and Recognitions:
i.He received the Ian McLellan Hunter Award by the Writers Guild of America in 1995.
ii.He received the Laurel Award for screenwriting in 2007.

National Award Winning-Makeup Artist Vikram Gaikwad Passed Away
In May 2025, the Celebrity-Makeup Artist, Vikram Gaikwad passed away at the age of 65 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was born in Jalgaon, Maharashtra in 1960.

  • He received 3 National Awards for Best Makeup Artist for a Bengali Film, Moner Manush in 2010, a Hindi Film “Dirty Picture” and a Marathi film “Balgandharva” in 2011,  followed by a Bengali Film “Jaatishwar” in 2014.

i.He began his illustrious career with the film Sardar and went on to become a transformative force in makeup artistry for both Bollywood and regional cinema.

  • His other notable works are such as 83, Uri: The Surgical Strike and Ponniyin Selvan.

ii.His work spans across Hindi, Marathi, and South Indian Films such as Shakuntala Devi, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Sanju, Dangal, PK, 3 Idiots, Omkara, Katyar Kaljat Ghusali and O Kadhal Kanmani.
iii.He also received International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) for the films Dirty Picture in 2012, Bhaag Milka Bhaag in 2014 and Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2016.

i.In 1993, the UNGA adopted Resolution A/RES/47/237, designating May 15 as the annual International Day of Families.

  • The International Day of Families is observed annually under the guidance of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), with its Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) taking the lead in coordinating and organizing the global observance.

ii.The 1st International Day of Families was observed on May 15, 1994.
