IMD & ONAMET of Dominican Republic Signed MoU to Enhance Meteorological CapabilitiesIndia and Dominican Republic strengthen meteorological capabilities with new agreement India Meteorological Department(IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences(MoES), Government of India(GoI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Meteorological Office (Oficina Nacional de Meteorología – ONAMET) of the Dominican Republic. 

  • The MoU aims to enhance technical capacities at ONAMET for better forecasting and monitoring of meteorological phenomena in the Dominican Republic.

About the MoU:
i.The MoU will also address climate change through enhanced technological solutions and facilitates cooperative exchanges on early warning systems, capacity building in weather predictions, and data analysis.
ii.Under the MoU, both parties agreed on a cooperation roadmap that includes:

  • Training ONAMET personnel, designed by the IMD;
  • Exchange experiences on early warning mechanisms; and
  • Satellite data access for developing meteorological models

iii.This partnership will contribute towards improving the Dominican Republic’s meteorological services and ensure better preparedness and response to climate-related challenges.

i.Signatories: The MoU was signed by Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director of IMD, and Dominican ambassador to India David Puig on behalf of ONAMET Director Gloria Ceballos in New Delhi, Delhi.
ii.The MoU was represented by a Dominican commission led by Vice Minister of the Government Monitoring and Coordination of the Ministry of the Presidency José Ramón Holguín.
iii.Ramu Abbagani, the Indian ambassador to the Dominican Republic was also present during the event.

Environment Performance Index 2024: India Ranks 176 out of 180 CountriesIndia ranked 176th among 180 countries in Environment Performance Index 2024According to the 2024 Environment Performance Index (EPI), India is ranked 176th out of 180 countries with an EPI score of 27.6, surpassing only Pakistan, Viet Nam, Laos, and Myanmar.

  • Estonia topps the 2024 EPI with an EPI score of 75.3 followed by Luxembourg and Germany at 2nd and 3rd spot.
  • Previously, India was ranked 180th in the EPI 2022 and 168th in the EPI 2020.

EPI is a biennial index released by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network Earth Institute, Columbia University with support from The McCall MacBain Foundation. This index was first published in 2002.

India Becomes the Most Represented Nation in THE University Impact Rankings 2024India most-represented nation on Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024India has become the most represented nation in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2024 with 96 entries. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu(TN), ranked 81st, tops among the Indian Universities featured on the list.

  • India is followed by Türkiye with 91 universities and Pakistan with 89 universities respectively.
  • The 2024 ranking is topped by the Western Sydney University in Australia, followed by The University of Manchester, the United Kingdom(UK) and the University of Tasmania, Australia at 2nd place.

UNHCR Report: Forced Displacement Rose to 120 Million by the End of April 2024Forcibly displaced population doubles to 120 million over the past 10 yearsThe report titled “Global Trends Forced Displacement in 2023” published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR), states that the forced displacement has increased to 120 million by the end of April 2024.
Points to note: 
i.An estimated 117.3 million people remained forcibly displaced at the end of 2023.
ii.The report discovered that the number of refugees who crossed international borders in 2023 has increased by 7% to 43.4 million.
iii.Iran (3.8 million) hosts the largest refugee population followed by Türkiye (3.3 million), Colombia (2.9 million), Germany (2.6 million) and Pakistan (2 million).

PFRDA Selected NEC Corp India Private Limited as System IntegratorPFRDA selects NEC Corp India as system integratorThe Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) selected NEC Corporation India Private Limited (formerly known as NEC Technologies India Pvt. Ltd.) as System Integrator (SI) for a period of 6 years. It will play pivotal role in digital transformation journey of PFRDA.

  • The company will act as SI for PFRDA- Tracking, Reporting, Analytics, and Compliance e-Platform (TRACE) as part of Technology Architecture (TARCH) project.

About PFRDA-TRACE:
i.It will act as a comprehensive tool to submit regulatory and supervisory compliance reports by intermediaries, to share reports and data with PFRDA.
ii.It will be responsible for monitoring functions, facilitating workflow for PFRDA departments to review and track submissions.

  • This would enable communication of observations and remarks, which includes a validation process for reports and data submitted by intermediaries.

iii.It is the 2nd phase of PFRDA (TARCH) project to digitize and automate its operations. It is envisioned to be a modular and Application Programming Interface (API)-based platform.

  • PFRDA (TRACH) project will have 4 modules namely, Website Revamp and Chatbot, PFRDA Online Intermediary Supervision Engine (POISE), PFRDA Repository and Information Systems Management (PRISM), data and analytics platform, and PFRDA Intranet (PINTRA), internal digitalization.

iv.The SI will be responsible for studying existing processes, proposing improved workflows and providing design, development, customization, implementation and maintenance services for PFRDA-TRACE.

On 13th June 2024, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company Limited (Kotak Life) announced that it has collaborated with Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Limited (Mahindra Finance), to offer customized life insurance solutions to customers.

  • This collaboration aims to benefit more than 10 million customers of Mahindra Finance by facilitating various life insurance solutions through Kotak Life.

Neobanking Startup Jupiter Money Receives Final Approval from RBI for issuance of PPI
On 13th June 2024, Jupiter Money, a neobanking FinTech Startup backed by Tiger Global and Peak XV, has received final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to issue Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) including prepaid cards and prepaid wallets.

  • This will enable Jupiter to offer its users with digital wallets linked to the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) applications.

Point to Note:
i.In 2023, Jupiter in collaboration with Amica Finance, received a Non-Banking Finance Company (NBFC) from RBI to offer direct loans.
ii.Currently, Jupiter offers digital saving accounts in collaboration with Federal Bank and CSB Bank.

Cyril Ramaphosa Re-elected as President of South Africa for 2nd TermSouth African President Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected for second termOn 14th June 2024, The South African Parliament re-elected Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa(71 year old) as the President of the Republic of South Africa for 2nd term. He will be inaugurated on 19th June 2024.

  • Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of African National Congress (ANC) party, secured 283 votes in the 400 member house against Julius Malema, of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who received just 44 votes.

General Election 2024:
i.For the first time in 30 years, ANC lost its majority and has secured just 40% votes in the General Election held on 29th May 2024.
ii.The centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA), the 2nd biggest party in South Africa, secured almost 22% votes.
iii.DA signed an agreement with ANC to form a Unity Government.

ii.He was elected Secretary General of ANC in 1991. Later, he was elevated to the post of Deputy President of ANC in December 2012.

Reliances’ JPL JV Orbit Connect India Received Approval from IN-SPACe to Launch Satellite Internet in India
Orbit Connect India, a 51:49 Joint Venture (JV) between Reliance Industries’ Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) and Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications company, SES has received 3 approvals from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) for secured landing rights and market access to operate satellites above India.

  • The approvals granted to Orbit Connect India aim to provide satellite-based high-speed internet.
  • The JPL-SES JV entity has also applied to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for trial satellite spectrum in the ‘Ka’ and ‘Ku’ bands.
  • Ka-band satellite spectrum (in 27.5 to 29.1 gigahertz (GHz) and 29.5 to 30 GHz band ranges) is required for operating Orbit Connect’s earth station in Andhra Pradesh;
  • Airwaves in the Ku-band (14 GHz) are needed for User Access Terminals (UATs).

Note: Bharti Enterprises-backed Eutelsat OneWeb was the 1st satellite player to receive IN-SPACe authorisation in November 2023 for commercial services in India.

FIDE World Junior Chess Championships 2024: India’s Divya Deshmukh & Kazakhstan’s Nogerbek Kazybek crowned the ChampionsWorld Junior Chess Championship 2024 Unbeaten Divya and Nogerbek crowned the championsThe International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Junior Chess Championships 2024 (for Open & Girls Under-20) was held at the GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat from 1st to 14th June 2024.

  • International Master (IM) Divya Deshmukh(18 years old) from India won the 2024 FIDE World Junior Chess Championships (Girls) title by defeating Bulgaria’s Beloslava Krasteva in the final round.
  • IM Kazybek Nogerbek(20 years) from Kazakhstan won the 2024 FIDE World Junior Chess Championships (Open) title by defeating Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia in the final round

Points to note: 
i.This marks India’s first World Junior title after a gap of 15 years. Divya, from Nagpur (Maharashtra), becomes the 4th Indian girl to win the Junior title after Koneru Humpy (2001), Dronavalli Harik (2008) and Soumya Swaminathan (2009).
ii.She won 9 of her 11 games and drew the other two, earning a total of 8 international rating points.
iii.With this victory, she is ranked 20th on FIDE’s Standard Top 100 Women players. She is the youngest and 2nd U-20 player in the Top 20. 
Note: She has previously won the 2023 Asian Continental Chess Championship (Women), held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
iv.Kazybek is the second Kazakh to become world junior champion, as GM Darmen Sadvakasov, the current President of the Kazakh Chess Federation, won the title in 1998.
Final Standing: 
i.Kazybek Nogerbek and Emin Ohanyan (Armenia ) topped (1-2) the final standing of the Open category with a score of 8.5.
ii.Pranav Anand of India who began as the third seed finished at the 10th spot with a score of 7.5.
iii.Mariam Mkrtchyan secured the runner-up spot with a score of 9 and Divya topped the final standing of the Girls category with a score of 10.

The United Nations (UN) World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is annually observed across the globe on 15 June to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation faced by older persons, while promoting respect and dignity for older persons.
The 2024 theme of WEAAD is, “Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies.”
Background:
i.The observance of the WEAAD on 15 June, was initiated by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in 2006.
ii.Following the request by the INPEA, on 19 December 2011, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/66/127, proclaiming 15 June as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
iii.The 1st ever UN WEAAD was observed on 15 June 2012.

  • Global Wind Day is a coordinated action annually organised by WindEurope, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), and national renewable energy associations.

Background:
i.Global Wind Day initially originated in Europe as European Wind Day organised by the EWEA in 2007.

  • It is the first-ever pan-European awareness campaign promoting wind energy.

ii.In 2009, the EWEA collaborated with the GWEC, turning the Day into a global event to raise awareness about Wind Energy globally.

ASEAN Dengue Day 2024 – June 15Asean dengue day - June 15 2024 The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) annually celebrates ASEAN Dengue Day (ADD) on 15 June to raise awareness of Dengue, mobilise resources for its prevention and control at the regional and national level, and demonstrate the region’s commitment to tackling the disease.

  • ADD allows the ASEAN Member States (AMS) to foster measures preventing Dengue, in coordination with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Background:
i.The observance of ASEAN Dengue Day was endorsed at the 10th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting in 2010 as a key regional advocacy initiative against dengue to be commemorated every June 15 by all AMS.
ii.The first official ADD was observed on 15 June 2011. The 1st regional event was held in 2011 in Jakarta, Indonesia,
iii.In 2012, the WHO joined the ASEAN in marking the ASEAN Dengue Day on 15 June.

Karnataka Becomes 1st State to Give Rs 1 Cr Accident Insurance Compensation; KSRTC distributes Rs 1 Cr to Employees’ Dependents
Karnataka has become the 1st state in India to announce Rs 1 crore in insurance compensation for employees who die in road accidents. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has disbursed Rs. 1 crore each as Accident Insurance Relief Compensation to the dependents of 4 employees who lost their lives in the line of duty.

  • This brings the total number of families receiving such compensation to 17.
  • This initiative by the KSRTC Department aims to provide substantial financial support to the dependents of deceased employees.
  • Additionally, Rs 10 lakh in compensation has also been given to 23 dependents of employees who died due to various illnesses while in service.
  • A total of 39 families have been supported under this scheme.

Passenger Compensation:
Rs 10 lakh each has been given to the dependents of four passengers who lost their lives in accidents involving KSRTC vehicles.
