NITI Aayog Launched Two Initiatives under Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) to foster innovationOn 10th June 2024, National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) launched the “AIM-ICDK Water Challenge 4.0” and the 5th edition of “Innovations for You” under its flagship program, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM).
- Both these initiatives aim to foster innovation and sustainability in India.
- The launch event was addressed by important dignitaries such as: Chintan Vaishnav, Director AIM, NITI Aayog and Soren Norrenlund Kannik-Marquardsen, Minister Counseller, Head of Trade Council in New Delhi (Delhi) & Regional Coordinator South Asia, Royal Danish Embassy.
About AIM-ICDK Water Challenge 4.0:
i.It is the 4th edition of the open innovation water challenge. AIM developed this initiative in partnership with the Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK) at the Royal Danish Embassy in India.
- It aims to address the critical water-related challenges through innovative solutions.
- The Water Challenge encompasses the 5 S’s in the Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark – Skills, Scale, Scope, Sustainability, and Speed.
ii.Under this initiative, the selected teams will constitutes the Indian cohort, which will participate in the global Next Generation Digital Action program.
- The selected teams will engage with young talents from leading universities and innovation hubs across 9 countries namely, India, Denmark, Ghana, Kenya, Korea, Tanzania, South Africa, Colombia, and Mexico.
iii.The participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their innovations at the Digital Tech Summit which is scheduled to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 30th October to 31st October, 2024.
iv.The initiative allows entries under 2 tracks: One for, the students and the another one for, the young entrepreneurs. Participants under both these tracks should be under the age of 35.
v.The application process will commence on 10th June 2024 and the last date of application is 20th June 2024.

i.It is a coffee table book series which highlights the endeavors of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Entrepreneurs in India.
ii.It features 60 entrepreneurs from various parts of India, each contributing towards the betterment of society through sustainable solutions.

IRDAI Master Circular: Policy Loan Facility Mandated in All Life Insurance Savings Products; CIS to Simplify Policy DetailsThe Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in its Master Circular on Life Insurance Products, has mandated insurance companies to offer a policy loan facility across all life insurance savings products, effective from 30 September 2024, to help policyholders meet liquidity needs.
- IRDAI also introduced major reforms in the motor, health, and home insurance segments to simplify the insurance landscape. The new set of reforms has introduced a Customer Information Sheet (CIS) to provide comprehensive policy details.

CII Estimates India’s GDP to Grow at 8% in 2024; Inflation Likely to Remain within RBI’s 4% Target
On 13th June 2024, The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) estimated that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at 8% in 2024. It has underscored that policy interventions, specifically which aimed to improve the Ease of Doing of Business (EoDB), have significantly contributed to strengthen the Indian Economy.
- It also expected that inflation is more likely to within the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s target range of 4 to 4.5% in 2024.
- CII highlighted various indicators of economic health like: agriculture, information technology, services, and global trade are expected to boost economic expansion in the next years.
Note: In June 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its 2nd bi-monthly Monetary Policy of FY25 maintained its inflation projection at 4.5% for FY25(2024-25).
Key Points:
i.CII underscored certain policy measures implemented by Centre Government which aimed to simplify business processes and to reduce bureaucratic obstacles, plays an important role in fostering conducive environment growth, specially for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
ii.CII’s positive outlook for India’s economy is backed by improvements in global trade dynamics and the resilience of the IT and services sectors.
iii.CII also estimated that agricultural sector will get benefit from favourable monsoon conditions along with the support from government initiatives will help the farmers to enhance their productivity and income.

UBS Securities India: India to Maintain 6.5-7% Y-o-Y GDP Growth between FY26 & FY30
According to UBS Securities India Pvt Ltd, a stockbroker and merchant banking company, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to sustain a potential growth rate of 6.5% – 7% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) between FY 2025-26 (FY26) and FY 2029-30 (FY30).
- In FY25, India is projected to grow at 7%, as post-pandemic recovery in the capital expenditure (capex) cycle, driven by government spending, and strong residential real estate demand.
- Corporate capex recovery is expected to pick up post-elections, with visible impacts from FY26.
- Household consumption growth is projected to rise to 5% Y-o-Y in FY25, driven by premium and rural segments, while urban mass-market demand remains modest.
Note: The RBI revised its FY25 GDP forecast to 7.2%, up from the April 2024 projection of 7%.

Key Points:
i.TCS emerged India’s most valuable brand by securing a rank at 46th spot with total valuation of USD 44.8 billion.
ii.Apple retained its 1st position for the 3rd consecutive time and has also become the 1st global brand to surpass USD 1 trillion in value with total valuation of USD 1016 billion.
iii.While, Google with valuation of USD 753.5 billion and Microsoft with valuation of USD 712.9 billion with global ranking of 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
iv.The cumulative value of the top 100 most valuable global brands has increased by 20% compared to previous year edition.

SEBI Bags ‘Best Conduct of Business Regulator’ Award in Asia Pacific by The Asian Banker
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has been honoured with the ‘Best Conduct of Business Regulator‘ Award in the Asia Pacific by the Asian Banker for its focus on transparency, fairness, and investor protection in the securities markets in India.
- Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, Whole Time Member of SEBI received the award at the ceremony held during the Asian Banker Summit 2024 held on 23 May 2024 in Hong Kong. The theme of the summit was “Bridging innovation and resilience in finance”.
i.SEBI introduced the T+1 settlement in 2021, fully implemented by January 2023. This initiative allows investors quicker access to their funds, after trade execution, improving market efficiency and liquidity.
ii.SEBI introduced a regulatory framework for index providers, improving governance and administration of financial benchmarks. Flexibility was provided to non-profit organisations for raising funds through the social stock exchange.

Pema Khandu Took Oath as CM of Arunachal Pradesh for 3rd Time; Chowna Mein Sworn in as Deputy CMOn 13th June 2024, Pema Khandu of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sworn in as the Chief Minister (CM) of Arunachal Pradesh (AR) for the 3rd consecutive term at a ceremony held at Dorjee Khandu Convention Hall in Itanagar, AR. He has been serving as the CM of AR since 2016
- Chowna Mein took oath as the deputy CM of AR. He has been serving as Dy CM since 2016.
- The Oath was administered by Lt Gen (Retd) Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik, Governor of AR.

i.Pema Khandu began his political carrer in 1998 with Indian National Congress (INC) and assisted his late father Dorjee Khandu, who served as CM of AR from 2007 till his death in 2011.

iii.In Spetember 2016, he along with 43 MLA’s deflected to People’s Party of Arunachal(PPA) and later in December 2016, He joined BJP.

- Ajit Doval has been serving as the NSA since 30 May 2014 and has been appointed three consecutive times for the post.
- PK Mishra has been serving as the Principal Secretary to the PM since September 2019.

i.Both Ajit Doval and PK Mishra have been assigned the rank of Cabinet Minister in the Table of Precedence during their term of office.
ii.Their appointments will be co-terminus with the term of the PM or until further orders.

Indian Army Gets Its 1st Batch of 1st Indigenous LM Nagastra-1 with Reusable Technology The Indian Army has received the first batch of Indigenous man-portable suicide drones also known as the 1st Indigenous Loitering Munition (LM), Nagastra–1, with the capability of precise strikes on enemy training camps and launch pads, minimising risks to soldiers.
- Nagastra–1 is designed and developed by Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Industries Nagpur (Maharashtra), in association with Z-Motion Autonomous Systems Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, Karnataka, with over 75% indigenous content.
Nagastra-1 is a fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), weighing 9 kilograms (kg), with an endurance of 60 minutes, a man-in-loop range of 15 kilometers (km), and an autonomous mode range of 30 km.
Points to Note:
i.The Indian Army has placed an order to EEL to supply 480 LMs under Emergency Procurement Powers.
ii.After completing the pre-delivery inspections, EEL delivered 120 LMs to an Army Ammunition Depot.
iii.Drones like Nagastra-1 with in-built warheads are known as kamikaze or exploding drones.
- These drones were first unveiled by the Indian Army in 2023, during a Niche Technology and Innovation display at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi.
Military Impact:
i.The enhanced tactical capabilities of Nagastra-1, allow the Indian Army to conduct shallow strikes across borders with heightened precision and reduced operational risks.
ii.The drones can also operate from high-altitude areas at extreme temperatures.
Technological Advancements:
i.Nagastra -1, in a “kamikaze mode”, can neutralise any hostile threat with a 2 meter (m) Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled precision, crucial for targeting specific threats.
ii.Its electric propulsion system provides a low acoustic signature at heights exceeding 200 meters(m), making it hard to detect by opponents.
iii.The LM is equipped with day-night surveillance cameras and a fragmenting warhead that can defeat soft-skin targets.
iv.The munitions can carry a 1 kg warhead up to a range of 15 km, with an upgraded version capable of carrying a 2.2 kg warhead up to 30 km.
v.It can also be called back and made to land softly using a parachute recovery for reuse if the mission is aborted or a target is not detected.
Versatile Application:
Drones like Nagastra-1 are a type of LM, in which the aerial weapon is designed with an in-built warhead capable of hanging around until a target is located, then executing a precise strike.

USA Conducted Operational Test Launch of Minuteman III ICBMs
A joint team of the United States (US) Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) Airmen supported by the US Space Force Guardians launched an unarmed Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) equipped with one re-entry vehicle from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, the United States of America(USA).
Points to note:
i.The 2 Minuteman III ICBMS in these tests were launched into suborbital space with a rocket engine before releasing their re-entry vehicles back through Earth’s atmosphere.
ii.This test launch is part of routine and periodic activities which aims to demonstrate the operational capability of the Minuteman III and the safety, security, reliability, and effectiveness of the USA’s nuclear deterrent.
iii.It reinforces the USA’s readiness to respond to threats and ensures national security and the security of the allies and partners of the USA.
Key Highlights:
i.The ICBM’s re-entry vehicle traveled approximately 4,200 miles at speeds exceeding 15,000 miles per hour.
ii.It traveled to the USA Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site (RTS) on the USA Army Garrison-Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
iii.The RTS sensors test and evaluate the Research and Development (R&D) of the USA’s space and missile programs.
- RTS sensors include high-fidelity metric, signature radars, optical sensors, and telemetry,
iv.The missile’s performance was evaluated at the RTS using data collected during the final phase of the trajectory.
Community and Collaboration:
The ICBM community including the Department of Defence, the Department of Energy, and the USA Strategic Command, uses data from test launches to support continuous force development and evaluation.

i.The LG-35A Sentinel is set to replace the Minuteman III (operational since 1970) ICBM by 2029, with full capability expected by the mid-2030s.
ii.The Air Force remains committed to maintaining a credible nuclear deterrent throughout this transition.

Sagar Defence Engineering Secures Contract from DRDO To Develop Cutting-Edge ULUAVs
Pune (Maharashtra) based Sagar Defence Engineering Private Limited has secured a contract from the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Technology Development Fund (TDF) to develop Underwater Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (ULUAVs).
Signatories: The contract was signed between Nidhi Bansal, Director of TDF, and Sagar Defence Engineering in the presence of GA Srinivasa Murthy, Director of the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad (Telangana)and the Indian Navy (IN) along with TDF officials.
- It aims to improve the strategic prowess of Indian defence forces and expand India’s underwater capabilities, represents a significant advancement in Indian defence technology.
- This collaboration focuses on developing a ULUAVs that will launch from a submarine and operate autonomously, with the capacity to land on another moving vessel.
- It will also include data-collection devices such as cameras, sonar, and other sensors.
- It allows submarines to expand their command and control capabilities, the ULUAVs provides high tactical advantage, achieved through Radio Frequency (RF) data-link transmissions that can reach the submarine positioned under the ocean’s surface.
- It will be utilised for conducting Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Lal, Mursan & Hilsa: Craters on Mars Named After Indian Physicist And Towns of Bihar, UP
The Working Group Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named three newly discovered craters on Mars as ‘Lal’ crater, ‘Mursan’ crater and ‘Hilsa’ crater.
- These three craters have been discovered on Mars located within the Tharsis volcanic region (largest volcanic region on Mars) by Ahmedabad-based Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), a unit of the Department of Space (DoS) in 2021.
About Lal, Mursan & Hilsa:
i.Lal crater: It has been named in honour of Professor Devendra Lal, Indian physicist, former director of PRL (1972 to 1983). It is the largest of these craters which is about 65 Kilometre(km) wide and centred at -20.98 degree and 209.34 degree.
ii.Mursan crater: It has been named after Mursan town in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh (UP). It is 10 km wide and superimposed on the eastern side of the rim of the Lal crater.
iii.Hilsa crater: It has been named after Hilsa town in Nalanda district of Bihar. It is 10 km wide and superimposed on the western side of the rim of the Lal crater.

World Blood Donor Day 2024 – June 14 World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is annually observed across the globe on 14 June to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and express gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors.
- The annual observance of WBDD is led by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
- 14 June 2024 commemorates the 20th anniversary of WBDD.
The 2024 theme/slogan of WBDD is, “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you, blood donors!”
- The host country of the WBDD 2024 is Perú. The events are organised together with the Ministry of Health of Peru.
Background:
i.The WBDD was established by the WHO in 2004 to mark the birthday anniversary of an Austrian-American biologist and physician Karl Landsteiner (1868–1943), who discovered the ABO blood groups in 1901.
- The 1st WBDD was observed on 14 June 2004.
ii.Following the successful 1st observance, the 58th World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2005 adopted the resolution WHA58.13 titled, “Blood safety: proposal to establish World Blood Donor Day,” and agreed to celebrate WBDD on 14 June each year.

Assam Launches ‘Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina’ Scheme To Promote Girl EducationOn 12th June 2024, The Chief Minister (CM) of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the new scheme Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina (MMNM) to promote girl education and to end child marriage in Assam.
About Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Scheme:
i.This initiative has been announced on February 12 2024 during the presentation of the state budget for 2024–25.
ii.The scheme aims to empower the girls of the state by promoting education amongst them with financial incentive and support from the state government.
iii.It also aims to increase the overall Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) beyond matriculation and help in eliminating the social evil of child marriage.
iv.The scheme is expected to cover around 1 million girl students and cost the exchequer Rs.300 crore in the first year and around Rs.1,500 crore over a five-year period.
v.The girl students enrolled in class of 11th and 12th, three year or four year degree graduation and Post Graduation or B.Ed degree will get Rs 1000, Rs 1200, and Rs 2500 per month respectively from the government.
Eligibility Criteria:
i.The scheme is applicable only for girl students but those who are married are not eligible.
ii.The daughters of Member of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative assembly(MLAs) of Assam are not eligible for the scheme.
iii.The girl students who are beneficiaries of the Pragyan Bharati Scooty Scheme will not be eligible for these monetary benefits.
iv.Girls must be enrolled in any government college or educational institution to be eligible for this benefit.
