Union Minister Chirag Paswan Inaugurates ‘Indusfood 2026’ in Greater Noida, UPIn January 2026, Union Minister Chirag Paswan, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), inaugurated the 9th edition of the Indusfood, Asia’s premier global Food and Beverage (F&B) sourcing and trade show, at India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

• The three-day event, held from January 8 to 10, 2026, was organized by the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I).

Highlights of Indusfood 2026:
Participation: The event featured over 2,200 exhibitors from over 30 countries and more than 15,000 buyers from over 120 countries.
New Pavilions: The event added two new pavilions such as Pet Food & Animal Nutrition and Cookware & Kitchenware, reflecting growing global demand due to changing lifestyles, focusing on wellness, premium products, and sustainability.
Key Initiatives of Indusfood 2026:
World Culinary Heritage Conference:  On January 9, 2026, as part of the event, the 1st World Culinary Heritage Conference 2026 was held. The conference was organized by the Indian Federation of Culinary Associations (IFCA).
BHARATI Startup Challenge: During the event, APEDA launched Bharat’s Hub for Agritech, Resilience, Advancement and Incubation for Export Enablement (BHARATI) Startup Challenge, with an aim to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the agricultural and processed food export sector.
India–UAE Food Corridor: Launched by the Abu Dhabi Food Hub(the United Arab Emirates, UAE), this initiative aimed to enhance food security, streamline supply chains, and boost bilateral trade flows.
Saudi Arabia Milestone: Saudi exhibitor Alsalan celebrated its 75-year legacy, highlighting long-standing food trade ties and strengthening partnerships with India.
Agreement: During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi(KEZAD), UAE and the TPCI for the India-UAE Food Corridor, aimed at strengthening bilateral food trade.

Overview of 3rd Indian Lighthouse Festival Held in Visakhapatnam, APThe 3rd edition of Indian Lighthouse Festival 3.0 held from January 09 to January 10, 2026, at MGM Park in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP).

• The two-day national lighthouse festival was organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).

Key Highlights:
Inaugurated by: The festival was inaugurated by Muppavarapu (M.) Venkaiah Naidu, former Vice President (VP) of India, who attended the event as the Chief Guest, along with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, MoPSW.
Laid Foundation Stone: During the event, Union Minister Sonowal virtually laid foundation stone for re-construction of staff quarters at Junglighat, Sri Vijaya Puram in Union Territory (UT) Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

• He also virtually inaugurated the light and sound projection mapping show at Aguada Lighthouse in Goa.

MoU between VPA and DGLL: The festival witnessed the exchange of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) and the DGLL for the development of a Lighthouse Museum in Visakhapatnam, AP.
Foundation Stone of 4 Port Projects:  On the sidelines of Indian Lighthouse festival, Union Minister Sonowal laid foundation stone of 4 major port infrastructure development projects worth Rs 230 crore of VPA, at Sagarmala Conventions in Saligrampuram, AP.

• The projects launched were:  Upgradation of fire-fighting facilities at the LPG berth (Rs 52.24 crore); Upgradation of ORS Dry Dock (Rs 35.87 crore);Construction of a new AOB (at a cost Rs 97.70 crore); and Construction of residential apartments at Harbour Park (Rs 44.20 crore).

India’s Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity Reaches 266.78 GW in 2025, up 22.6% from 2024
On January 10, 2026, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) released data, highlighting India’s non-fossil fuel electricity capacity, encompassing solar, wind, hydro, bioenergy and other clean sources, reached 266.78 Gigawatt (GW) in 2025, marking a 22.6% increase from 2024.

About India’s Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity: 
Storage Breakdown: It encompasses solar power of 131.81 GW (approximately 38.8% growth), wind energy (54.51 GW) (approximately 13.2% growth), bioenergy (11.61 GW), small hydro (5.16 GW), and large hydro including pumped storage (50.91 GW).

• In 2025, India added 48 GW of Renewable Energy (RE) including hydropower.

Progress: The 2025 achievement represents over 50% progress, placing alongside China and the United States of America (USA).
Alignment: The achievement aligns with the goal of Government of India (GOI) to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. It also strengthens GOI’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and Net Zero emission by 2070.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Announced the Launch of Speed Post 24 and Speed Post 48 Services
In January 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao (M.) Scindia, Ministry of Communications, announced the launch of two new India Post products, Speed Post 24 and Speed Post 48, during a programme held at Pichor in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh (MP).

• This initiative marked as a major step in the ongoing modernization of India’s postal system.

Key Details:
Assured Delivery: These new services will set new standards for punctuality, reliability, and speed in the Indian Post network.

• Speed 24 will deliver the important documents and parcels to the designated address within a day (24 hour), while Speed Post 48 will deliver the shipments within two days (48 hours).

Other Key Launches: Apart from these two new products, Union Minister Scindia inaugurated the renovated Pichhor sub-post office, upgraded at a cost of Rs 2 lakh  and also laid foundation stone for a new sub-post office building which is estimated to be built at a cost of Rs 1.11 crore. 
Reforms through NCSS: While addressing the event, Union Minister highlighted that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), through the National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS), has launched several transforming reforms aimed to strengthen indigenous manufacturing and testing capabilities.

Indian Army Conducts MCF Exercise ‘Sanjha Shakti’ in Maharashtra
The Indian Army (IA) conducted the first-ever two-day joint Military–Civil Fusion (MCF) exercise ‘Sanjha Shakti’ at the Diggi Range, Khadki Military Station, in Pune (Maharashtra) from January 8-9, 2026, under the aegis of the Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa (MG & G) area of Southern Command.

About Exercise Sanjha Shakti :
Objective: The exercise enhanced civil–military synergy, rapid response capability, and public safety in rear areas.
Participants: IA and 16 key civilian agencies, including Maharashtra Police, Force One, and fire and emergency services, participated with over 350 civilian personnel.
Operations: Realistic, mission-oriented scenarios tested interoperability, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), communication protocols, and decision-making across levels.
Outcomes: The drill validated seamless coordination, strengthened joint preparedness, and demonstrated the effectiveness of the MCF framework.

GAIL and PNGRB Launch #NonStopZindagi Campaign under National PNG Drive 2.0In January 2026, GAIL (India) Limited partnered with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for the National PNG Drive 2.0, joining the nationwide “#NonStopZindagi” campaign running from 1 January to 31 March 2026 to promote the adoption of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across India.

About National PNG Drive 2.0:
Aim: Promote PNG, CNG, and the City Gas Distribution (CGD) ecosystem to drive India’s clean energy transition while emphasizing their safety, reliability, convenience, cost efficiency, and environmental benefits.
National Goal: Increase natural gas share in India’s primary energy basket to 15% by 2030 and support a gas-based economy.
Unified Tariff: PNGRB’s “One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff” framework standardizes transportation charges, integrates the national gas grid, and reduces costs for consumers.
Target Segments: Domestic PNG households, commercial establishments, industrial users, and CNG automobile consumers.
Campaign Strategy: The initiative uses a multi-platform approach, combining digital outreach (social media, influencers, platform-optimized videos) with on-ground activations such as Resident Welfare Association (RWA) toolkits, mobile vans, and festival-themed messaging, supported by standardized creative toolkits for CGD entities to ensure uniform messaging and measurable lead generation.
Significance: Encourages adoption of cleaner fuels, strengthens the national gas ecosystem, and reduces regional disparities in energy access.

Overview: The Golden Globe Awards are one of the most prestigious international honors in the entertainment industry, recognizing outstanding achievement in film and television each year. It was presented for the first time in 1944.

• It is referred to as “Hollywood’s Party of the Year” and is the largest award show in the world.

New Category: In the 2026 awards, the category “Best Podcast” was awarded for the first time, broadening the Globes’ recognition of modern entertainment forums.

• American actress Amy Poehler won the inaugural Golden Globe for Best Podcast for Good Hang With Amy Poehler.

Best Actor: Brazilian actor Wagner Moura made history by becoming the first Brazilian actor to win the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in ‘The Secret Agent’.
Most-Awarded Film: The film “One Battle After Another”, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, won four Golden Globes out of nine nominations, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Director, Screenplay, and Supporting Actress.

• The Television (TV) series “Adolescence”, directed by Philip Barantini, also won four Golden Globes, including Best Limited Series, Best Actor (Limited Series), Best Supporting Actor (TV), and Best Supporting Actress (TV).

DRDO Successfully Conducts Flight Test of Third-Generation MPATGM in Ahilya Nagar, MaharashtraOn January 12, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), successfully conducted the flight test of the Third-Generation Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) with top‑attack capability against a moving target at the KK Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra.
Key Details of Test:
Conducted By: The test was conducted by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) of DRDO, Hyderabad, Telangana.
Launch Platform: It was launched from a tripod or a military vehicle‑mounted launcher.
Test Objective: Validated flight performance, accuracy, and effectiveness against moving and static armored targets.
About Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM):
Overview: MPATGM is a lightweight, sophisticated anti-armour missile.It is a third generation, fire-and-forget anti-tank weapon developed with an aim to enable infantry to destroy armored threats.
Production Partners: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) served as the Development‑Cum‑Production Partners (DcPP) for the system.
Key Features: MPATGM is about 1.3 metres (m) long with a diameter of around 120 millimeters (mm). The missile weighs approximately 14.5 kilogram (kg) and the Command Launch Unit (CLU) weighs about 14.25 kg, making the system portable and powerful.

Overview of Khelo India Beach Games 2026 held at in Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar HaveliIn January 2026, Karnataka emerged as the overall champions of the Khelo India Beach Games (KIBG) 2026, the second edition of India’s national multi-sport beach competition, held at Ghoghla Beach in Diu, Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu(DNHDD).

• The KIBG 2026, held from January 5-10, 2026, organised by the UT of DNHDD under the technical supervision of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and various national sports federations.

About Khelo India Beach Games (KIBG) 2026:
Sports: Featured six medal events, including Beach Volleyball, Beach Soccer, Sepak Takraw, Beach Kabaddi, Pencak Silat, and Open Water Swimming, alongside demonstration events such as Mallakhamb and Tug-of-War.
Participants: Over 1,100 athletes from 30 states and UTs competed in the event.
Mascot: Diu is adorned in a festive spirit for KIBG 2026, with the mascot ‘Pearl’, a cheerful and energetic dolphin, welcoming athletes, support staff, volunteers, and all stakeholders of the Games.
Overall Standings: Karnataka emerged as the overall champions of the KIBG 2026, securing a total of 11 medals, including 3 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze.

• Tamil Nadu (TN) finished in second place with 8 medals (3 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze), while Manipur claimed the third spot with 7 medals (3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze).

Former Indian Hockey Player and Olympian Davinder Singh Garcha Passed AwayIn January 2026, former Indian hockey player and Olympian Davinder Singh Garcha passed away at the age of 73 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He was born on December 7, 1952 in Amritsar, Punjab.

• In 2021,he was honoured with the Major Dhyan Chand Award, India’s highest lifetime achievement award in sports, by the Government of India (GoI), in recognition of his exceptional contributions in hockey.

About Davinder Singh Garcha:
International Hockey Career:  Overall, he played over 30 international matches and scored 19 goals in 3 major tournaments.
Olympic Gold-Medal: He was a member of the Indian Hockey team that clinched the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics in Moscow, Russia.

• During the tournament, he scored 8 goals across 6 matches and played a major role in India’s record 8th Olympic Gold medal, defeating Spain by 4-3 in the final match.

Police Career: Davinder Singh, former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Punjab Police.
Post-Playing Career: After retirement from hockey, he worked actively in promoting hockey and served as the President of Olympian Surjit Hockey Society, which organises hockey tournaments annually.

• He was also the President of Mohinder Singh Munshi Hockey Tournament, All India-Under-19 (U-19) tournament held in the memory of former Olympian Mohinder Singh Munshi, a member of 1975 World Cup -winning team.

National Road Safety Week 2026 – January 11-17National Road Safety Week is observed annually across India from January 11-17 to raise awareness about road safety by emphasizing responsible driving, pedestrian protection, and the importance of improved road infrastructure.

• 2026 marks the observance of the 37th National Road Safety Week

Background:
Inception: The first National Road Safety Week was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in 1989.
Expansion: The observance was extended to a month-long campaign in 2021.
Support: The annual observance is led by the MoRTH with support from the National Safety Council of India (NSC) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoL&E) to promote road safety awareness nationwide.
National Road Safety Month (NRSM) 2026:
Origin: The NRSM, introduced by MoRTH, was first observed in 2021.
2026 Observance: In 2026, NRSM is being observed from January 1 to 31, 2026 with the theme “Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha(Road Safety, Life Safety)” to promote awareness among citizens and stakeholders.

Leadership: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi interacted with the participants and reviewed ten high-impact thematic presentations by young leaders.
Themes: The dialogue focused on ten national priority themes such as Fit Bharat, Start-up India, Youth in Democracy, Women-Led Development, Cultural Diplomacy, Innovation with Tradition, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Sustainable Agriculture, Green Viksit Bharat, and a Future-Ready Workforce.

AP Cabinet Approved Dagadarthi Greenfield Airport Project at Nellore
In January 2026, the cabinet of Andhra Pradesh (AP) government approved the Dagadarthi greenfield airport project in Nellore district, giving a major boost to the state’s aviation and industrial infrastructure.

• Following this approval, Dagadarthi will become the 8th airport of AP, reflecting the state’s commitment to create a future-ready, multi-modal logistics and industrial network.

About Dagadarthi Greenfield Airport:
Location: This newly approved airport is located strategically, offering seamless connectivity to key National Highway (NH) corridors, two major ports such as Krishnapatnam and Ramayapatnam, and prominent industrial clusters i.e. Krishnapatnam Industrial Area (KRIS) City and Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative(IFFCO) Kisan Special Economic Zone Special Economic Zone(IKSEZ) in AP.
Development in Phased Manner: The airport, planned in several phases, will be developed over an area of 1,332.80 acres of land.

• Phase-I is designed to manage 1.4 million passengers annually, with capacity scalable to 15 million passengers annually in future.
• The master plan features a provision for a future cargo facility to support industrial output and port-led trade in the region.

Key Progress: So far, the proposed project has received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued to invite private participation for development, operation, and maintenance under long-term concession framework.

Justice Revati Mohite-Dere Sworn in as First Woman CJ of Meghalaya HC
In January 2026, Justice Revati Mohite-Dere, a judge of the Bombay High Court(HC), was sworn in as the first woman Chief Justice(CJ) of Meghalaya HC with oath of office administered by Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar, Governor of Meghalaya, at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan in Shillong, Meghalaya.

• She succeeded Justice Soumen Sen, who was transferred to the Kerala HC.
• HC judges in India are appointed by the President under Article 217 of the Constitution of India.
