Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Flagged Off India’s 1st Indigenous Hydrogen-Fuel Cell Vessel in Varanasi, UPIn December 2025, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), flagged off India’s 1st indigenous Hydrogen powered FCV(Fuel Cell Vessel) Pilot-01, during a ceremony held at Namo Ghat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP), on the Ganga River (National Waterway‑1).

  • The initiative supports India’s long-term plans, Maritime India Vision 2030 (MIV 2030) and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 (MAKV 2047), promoting clean inland water transport, smart infrastructure, and alternative fuels.

About India’s 1st Hydrogen Fuel Vessel:
Background: In November 2022,  Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to construct India’s 1st hydrogen  fuel cell catamaran vessel for operation in Varanasi and electric hybrid vessels for UP and Assam.
Specifications: This 24 meter (m)-long hydrogen-powered catamaran, owned by IWAI, was indigenously designed and built by CSL as a pilot project under MoPSW’s Harit Nauka’ initiative.
Passenger Capacity: This fully air-conditioned vessel has the capacity to carry 50 passengers and can operate continuously for 8 hours (hrs) at a speed of 7 to 9 nautical miles per hour(NM/h).
Environmental Features: This newly inaugurated passenger is powered  by a Low-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (LT-PEM) fuel cell system along with Lithium-ion Phosphate batteries that convert stored hydrogen into electricity and releases only pure water (H2O) as a byproduct, thereby providing passengers with noise-free, smoke-free, and pollution-free travel experience.
Operational Framework: The pilot vessel FCV Pilot-01, certified by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), is being deployed under a tripartite agreement between IWAI, CSL, and Inland and Coastal Shipping Limited(ICSL) covering technical support, operations, financial terms, safety protocols, monitoring, and periodic inspections.

In December 2025, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amazon Seller Services Private Limited to strengthen market access for artisans registered under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme.

  • The MoU was signed at Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi by the Office of the Development Commissioner (MSME) and Amazon representatives.

Arton Capital‘s Passport Index: UAE Topped as the World’s Strongest Passports ; India Ranked 67thIn December 2025, Canada based global financial advisory firm Arton Capital released the 2025 Passport Index. As per the index, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) retained its position as the world’s strongest passport for the 7th consecutive year, with an overall Mobility Score(MS) of 179, allowing visa-free access to 126 destinations, visa-on-arrivals in 45 countries and Estimate Time of Arrival (ETA) access to 08 countries.

  • It is followed by Singapore and Spain which are placed jointly at 2nd spot in the index, with both countries securing an overall MS of 175.
  • India ranked 67th globally with a mobility score of 74, granting visa-free access to 74 countries, covering 37% of the world.

Highlights of Passport Index 2025:
3rd Ranked Countries: The 3rd spot was shared by 18 countries namely, Belgium, France, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Luxembourg, Italy, Denmark, Portugal, Switzerland, Greece, Austria, Malaysia, Norway, Ireland, South Korea, and Japan with overall MS of 174.
Top 3 Countries in Individual Ranking System: The UAE (1st), Singapore (2nd) and Spain (3rd).
Global Dominance: The index showed that European passports continue to dominate the global rankings as countries like: Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, among others were featured among the world’s top 20 countries.
Bottom 5 Countries: Afghanistan (94th)with an overall MS of 38, ranked lowest in the Global Passport Power Index; followed by Syria (93rd), Iraq (92nd) and   Pakistan and Somalia (91st).

GOI & Liberia Sign MoU to Strengthen Pharmacopoeia Cooperation On December 11, 2025, Government of India (GoI) and Liberia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in pharmacopoeia, focusing on shared quality standards for medicines.

  • The MoU was signed by Manoj Bihari Verma, India’s Ambassador to Liberia, and Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, Health Minister of Liberia, in Monrovia, Liberia.

Key Details of MoU :
Adoption : The MoU allows Liberia to adopt or reference the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) for establishing quality standards for medicines, promoting harmonized rules and benchmarks between India and Liberia.
Quality Testing Alignment: Under the agreement, India and Liberia will follow similar procedures for testing and verifying the quality of medicines, ensuring consistency and safety across both countries.
About Pharmacopoeia: Pharmacopoeias are official books of drug standards used by governments and health regulators to ensure the quality, purity, identity, and strength of medicines.

World Inequality Report 2026: Top 10% Indian Population Accounts for 58% of National IncomeIn December 2025, World Inequality Lab (WIL) released the 3rd edition of the World Inequality Report(WIR 2026), tracking the evolution of economic disparities. According to the report, the top 10% of earners in India capture 58% of total income, while the bottom 50% share only 15%, highlighting extreme income disparity.

  • In India, the top 10% own around 65% of total wealth, with the top 1% holding about 40%. The average per capita income is approximately 6,200 euros (PPP), and average wealth is about 28,000 euros.
  • Women in India earn only 18% of labor income and have low workforce participation, below global averages of 34% income and 51% employment.

Highlights of WIR 2026 Report:
Global Inequality: The global inequality remains high, with 10% earning more than the bottom 90% combined and owing about 75% of global wealth. The bottom 50% hold just 2%.
Climate Inequality: The poorest 50% of the world produce only 3% of emissions from private capital and 10% of emissions from consumption. The richest 10% produce 77% of emissions from private capital and 47% of consumption-based emissions.

  • The top 1% alone are responsible for 41% of private capital emissions, almost twice as much as the entire bottom 90% combined.

Gender Inequality: Globally, women receive just over 25% of total labor income, encompassing Middle East & North Africa(MENA) (16%), South & Southeast Asia (20%), Sub-Saharan Africa (28%), East Asia (34%), Europe, North America & Oceania, Russia & Central Asia (40%).

  • Women earn much less than men when paid and unpaid work are included. Women earn 32% of men’s earnings per hour including unpaid care or domestic work and 61% when unpaid work is excluded.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Issues guidelines on Transaction account across 7 categories of regulated entitiesOn December 11, 2025 the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the final directions on ‘Maintenance of Cash Credit Accounts, Current Accounts and Overdraft Accounts by Banks’, introducing key relaxations while maintaining the overall principle-based framework.

  • The draft norms, which were issued on October 1, covered transaction account operations across seven categories of regulated entities, including Commercial Banks (CB), Small Finance Banks (SFB), Payments Banks (PB), Local Area Banks (LAB), Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and Co-operative Banks.

Key Highlights
Cash Credit (CC) Account Exclusion: The RBI acknowledged that CC facilities function differently from current and overdraft accounts as it is mainly a working-capital facility tied to the value of the borrower’s current assets.

  • Therefore, the Banks can now provide such CC facilities as per the needs of the customer, without any restriction.

Effective from: The amendments shall come into force from April 1,2026. Banks may however decide to implement the amendments in entirety from an earlier date.
Current Account (CA) and Over Draft (OD) Account
Exposure less than Rs 10 Crores (Cr): A bank may maintain a CA or OD account without any restriction in case of customers where the aggregate exposure of the banking system to the customer is less than Rs 10 Cr.
Exposure more than Rs 10 Cr: A bank may maintain current accounts or OD accounts as per the needs of the customer provided that the bank has either:

  • A minimum 10% share in banking system’s aggregate exposure to the borrower; or
  • A minimum 10% share in the banking system’s aggregate fund-based exposure to the borrower.

Other Key Highlights
Remittance Window: Despite stakeholders request for a longer remittance window, the requirement to transfer funds from collection account to designated transaction accounts (CC/OD/CA) within two working days remains unchanged.

RBI Data: India’s Banking Sector Hits 20-Year NPA Low; Records Strongest Profit SurgeIndia’s banking sector has achieved a historic milestone, recording its lowest level of Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPAs) in 20 years, which declined from 11.46% (in 2018) to 2.31% (by March 2025), the lowest in 20 years.

  • This decline was mainly driven by robust macro-economic fundamentals boosting the Indian banking and Non-Banking Financial (NBFC) sectors.
  • Similarly, Net NPA (NNPA) ratio dropped its lowest in the last 2 decades i.e. to 0.52% compared to 6.1% (in 2018), driven by stronger provision buffers.

Key Findings:
GNPA of PSBs and SCBs: As per the official data, GNPAs of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) declined from 9.11% (March 2021) to 2.58% (March 2025).
NNPAs of PSBs: The data also showed that NNPAs of PSBs decreased from 1.24% in Financial Year 2022-23 (FY23) to 0.52% (in FY25).
Bank Deposits and Credit Tripled: The data showed that domestic deposits and credits have nearly tripled in the last 10 years, with deposits increasing from Rs 88.35 lakh crore (2015) to Rs 231.90 lakh crore (2025) and credit rising from Rs 66.91 lakh crore (2015) to Rs 181.34 lakh crore (2025). 
Banks Profitability: The total business of PSBs increased from Rs 203 lakh crore in Financial Year 22-23 (FY23) to Rs 252 lakh crore (FY25). 

  • The net profit of these banks surged from Rs 1.05 lakh crore to Rs 1.78 lakh crore during the same time period.
  • SCBs Profit: SCBs registered their highest ever aggregate net profit of Rs 4.01 lakh crore (in FY25 ) over Rs 3.5 lakh crore (in FY24).

World Bank Approves Financing USD 600 million for Clean Air Programs in UP and HaryanaIn December 2025, the World Bank(WB) Board of Executive Directors approved about USD 600 million in financing for two multi-sectoral clean air programs in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Haryana to improve air quality for nearly 270 million people across the Indo-Gangetic Plains and Himalayan Foothills (IGP-HF) under the Regional Air Quality Management Program (RAQMP).
Uttar Pradesh Clean Air Management Program (UPCAMP):
Financing: Total financing of USD 299.66 million with a loan maturity of 10 years and a 2-year grace period.
Approach: Adopts an airshed approach to coordinate with neighboring states and control transboundary emissions.
Clean Transport: Introduces 15,000 electric three-wheelers and 500 electric buses in the districts of UP such as Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur.
Haryana Clean Air Project for Sustainable Development (HCAPSD):
Financing: The total project cost is Rs 3,646 crore, including USD 300 million from the World Bank, Haryana’s contribution of Rs 1,065 crore, and grant support of Rs 83 crore, with a loan maturity of 23.5 years and a 6-year grace period.
Implementing Agency: Coordinated by ARJUN (Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Resilient Jobs, Urban Air Quality & Next-Gen Skills Council), a special purpose vehicle chaired by Rajesh Khullar.
Clean Transport: Deploys 500 electric buses in Haryana across Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, and Jhajjar, supports electric three-wheelers, and establishes 200 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.

OPTCL Secured Rs 1,685 Crore Loan from NABARD for Power Infrastructure in Odisha
In December 2025, Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) signed a long-term loan agreement worth Rs 1,685.27 crore with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to enhance the state’s power infrastructure and provide reliable electricity to industries and consumers.

  • This marks NABARD’s first project financing to a State Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in Odisha.

  • New Substations: The allocation includes construction of 132/33 KV digital substations at Agalpur-Rampur (Balangir) and Athamallik (Angul), along with a 220/33 KV GIS at Madanpur-Rampur (Kalahandi).
  • Transmission Line: Funds will also support the 400 KV Talcher–Meramandali transmission line, costing Rs 77 crore, to evacuate power from the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Talcher Thermal Power Station Stage-III (2×660 Megawatt, MW).

Impact: The investment strengthens Odisha’s transmission network, ensures reliable power supply, and supports industrial and economic development across Odisha.
