Goa’s Feni Secured GI Tag: A New Chapter for the Heritage SpiritIn June 2025, Goa’s Ozzo Feni has secured Geographical Indication (GI) tag from Chennai (TN)-based Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I).
- Ozzo Feni which is produced by Cazcar Distillery in Nanora village near Panaji, Goa, has now become the 1st ever feni to receive a GI tag in India.
i.With this recognition, Feni is now recognised internationally and placed at a status comparable to Scotch in Scotland or Champagne in France.
ii.Feni is a traditional Indian spirit, well-known in Goa, originally introduced by the Portuguese missionaries who brought cashew plant to Goa in 1600s.
iii.It is made from the fermentation and double distillation of either cashew apples or coconut sap.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Chairs 6th Governing Council Meeting of NIIFOn 9 June 2025, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) chaired the 6th meeting of the Governing Council (GC) of the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) under the Mumbai (Maharashtra) based National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) in New Delhi, Delhi.
- The GC acknowledged NIIF’s evolution into a sovereign-linked asset manager and its success in building partnerships with global institutional investors.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy Launched C CARES Version 2.0 of CMPFOIn June 2025, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Ministry of Coal (MoC) and Ministry of Mines (MoM), launched ‘C CARES Version 2.0’, a web portal of the Dhanbad (Jharkhand) based Coal Mines Provident Fund Organization (CMPFO), in New Delhi, Delhi.
- The portal was developed and designed by the Pune (Maharashtra) based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
- This digital upgrade aligns with the Government of India’s vision of ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’ under the Digital India initiative, ensuring welfare, transparency, and convenience for coal workers.
Key Features of C CARES Version 2.0:
i.Purpose: To streamline Provident Fund (PF) and pension disbursement through a unified digital platform that connects coal workers, coal companies, and CMPFO.
ii.Functions: Real-time claim tracking, Seamless claim processing to final disbursement, Enhanced transparency and accountability, Automatic update of PF and Pension ledgers based on data from coal companies.
iii.Financial Integration: Developed in collaboration with Mumbai (Maharashtra) based State Bank of India (SBI), the system enables Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to member accounts.
iv.Implementation: Initially rolled out in five regional offices, the platform is set to be extended to all CMPFO regional offices nationwide by July 1, 2025.

Union Minister Amit Shah Launches ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag’ to Promote Indian Languages in Administration
In June 2025, Union Minister Amit Shah, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and the Ministry of Cooperation (MoC), launched the ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag (BBA) or Indian Languages Section’ under the Department of Official Language, MHA, in New Delhi (Delhi) to reduce administrative dependence on foreign languages, especially English.
- The initiative aims to promote regional languages in official work, support decision-making in mother tongues to improve governance, and strengthen India’s linguistic diversity by including all 22 Scheduled Languages.
i.The BBA collaborates with Pune (Maharashtra) based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to implement a universal translation system.
ii.This system will:
- Facilitate real-time translation of documents and correspondence between the Centre and State Governments.
- Enable seamless communication using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven tools that preserve the linguistic and cultural nuances during translation.
ii.Under the Official Language Rules, 1976, English is currently mandated for official communication between the Central Government and Region C states (such as Tamil Nadu (TN), Kerala, and Karnataka) where Hindi is not widely spoken.
- With the launch of BBA, officials across ministries can now use their mother tongue for file work, communication, and decision-making, while translations will be managed through the C-DAC platform.
Note: The Government of India(GoI) has allocated Rs.56 crore for the development of this platform in the Union Budget 2024-25.
President Droupadi Murmu Promulgates Ladakh Official Languages Regulation 2025
In June 2025, the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J), Government of India (GoI) announced that Droupadi Murmu, the President of India has promulgated ‘The Ladakh Official Languages Regulation, 2025’, which designates English, Hindi, Urdu, Bhoti, and Purgi as the official languages of the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh.
- The Regulation also stipulates that English will continue to be used “for all official purposes” as before its enactment
- The Administrator of Ladakh is instructed to establish institutional mechanisms and an Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages to promote native Ladakhi languages: Shina (Dardic), Brokskat (Dardic), Balti, and Ladakhi.
Other Related Reforms Enacted in Ladakh:
i.The Ladakh Reservation (Amendment) Regulation, 2025
- Provides 85% reservation in public employment for residents of Ladakh.
- Excludes the existing 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), resulting in a total reservation of 95%.
ii.Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (Amendment) Regulation, 2025
- One-third (1/3rd) reservation of seats for women in both the Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council (KAHDC).
- Reserved constituencies for women will rotate based on serial numbers assigned via official gazette notification.
Finland Inaugurates Honorary Consulate in Ahmedabad, Appoints Kulin Lalbhai as Honorary Consul
In June 2025, Kimmo Lähdevirta, Ambassador of Finland to India, inaugurated the Honorary Consulate of Finland in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to strengthen bilateral ties between Finland and India.
- Kulin Lalbhai, Vice Chairman of Ahmedabad (Gujarat)-based Arvind Limited, appointed as Honorary Consul of Finland in Ahmedabad.
i.This new consulate aims to strengthen diplomatic and commerce ties between Finland and Gujarat (India) and to support Finnish companies in expanding operations and investments in Gujarat.
ii.The consulate enhances ties in clean energy, circular economy, skilling, smart infrastructure, and sustainable design.
iii.It will facilitate Business-to-Business (B2B) partnerships, support Finnish citizens/enterprises, and promote investments.
ivThe consulate will assist 20,000+ Indians in Finland and 20+ Indian companies operating there.

UNFPA’s 2025 SOWP Report: Millions Face Barriers to Achieving Desired FertilityIn June 2025, New York, the United States of America(USA) based United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) released its State of World Population (SOWP) Report 2025 titled “The Real Fertility Crisis : The pursuit of reproductive agency in a changing world”, spotlighting major barriers preventing people globally, including in India, from achieving their reproductive aspirations.
- The report finds that 1 in 5 people globally expect not to have the number of children that they desire due to the prohibitive cost of parenthood, job insecurity, housing, and other concerns.
i.The 2025 SOWP report, based on a YouGov survey in 14 countries including India, Brazil, Morocco, South Africa, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Italy, Thailand, Hungary, United States of America(USA), Sweden, Republic of Korea and Germany.
ii.Since 1950, the global population has more than tripled, while the average fertility rate per woman has dropped from 5.0 to 2.25. Projections indicate it will further decline to the replacement level of 2.1 by 2050.
iii.Though India may have reached replacement-level fertility of 2.0, many people still face significant barriers to making free and informed decisions about their reproductive lives and significant disparities persist across regions and states.
iv.The report classifies India among middle-income nations experiencing swift demographic transitions, noting that the country’s population doubling time is now projected at 79 years.

DFCC Bank Becomes 1st Foreign Corporate to List Green Bonds on NSE IX On 9 June 2025, Colombo (Sri Lanka) based DFCC Bank PLC became the first foreign corporate entity to list Green Bonds worth Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) 2.5 billion on the National Stock Exchange – International Exchange (NSE IX) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC), Gujarat.
- The event was attended by K. Rajaraman, Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA); V. Balasubramaniam, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NSE IX; and Thimal Perera, CEO, DFCC Bank and Prins Perera, Senior Vice President – Treasury, Investment and Wholesale Banking of DFCC Bank.
Key Points:
i.Funds will finance solar energy projects (ground/rooftop installations) in Sri Lanka.
- Supports Sri Lanka’s goal of 70% renewable electricity by 2030 and adheres to the Sri Lanka Green Finance Taxonomy (SLGFT) and complies with International Capital Market Association – Green Bond Principles(ICMA GBP).
ii.Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Tata Asset Management Private Limited (TAMPL), part of the Tata group, received approval from the IFSCA to operate as a Regional Fund Management Entity (FME) (Retail) at GIFT IFSC.

World Bank retains India FY26 GDP growth forecast at 6.3% and 6.5% in FY 27 In June 2025, The World Bank (WB) released its biannual report titled Global Economic Prospects (GEP) for June 2025. The report has projected that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will grow at a rate of 6.3% in Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), 6.5% in FY 27 and 6.7% in FY28.
- The WB downgraded the projection for FY26 by 40 basis points (bps), FY27 by 20 bps from its GEP for January 2025.
Global Scenario:
i.In its June GEP, the WB lowered its global GDP growth forecast to 2.3 % for 2025 and 2.4% for 2026, making downward revision of 0.4% and 0.3% respectively from its previous projection.
ii.As per the report, heightened trade tensions and policy uncertainty are expected to drive global growth down this year to its slowest pace since 2008 outside of outright global recessions.
- The turmoil has resulted in growth forecasts being cut in nearly 70% of all economies—across all regions and income groups.
iii.While, the WB projects global inflation to average 2.9% in both 2025 and 2026, before easing to 2.5% in 2027.

BEL & Tata Electronics ink pact to boost India’s semiconductor self-reliance
In June 2025, Bengaluru(Karnataka) based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence(MoD), and Tata Electronics Private Limited(TEPL), Mumbai (Maharashtra) based greenfield venture of the Tata Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop indigenous electronics and semiconductor solutions.
- The agreement was signed by Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director(CMD) of BEL, and Dr. Randhir Thakur, Chief Executive Officer(CEO) and MD of TEPL in Mumbai.
i.The MoU focuses on collaboration in semiconductor fabrication, outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT), and design services.
ii.The aim is to produce key components such as Microcontrollers (MCUs), Systems-on-Chip (SoCs), and Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) to meet current and future requirements of BEL.
iii.By combining Tata Electronics’ expertise in semiconductor fabrication with BEL’s experience in defence electronics, the partnership aims to strengthen India’s domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
iv.This collaboration is a strategic step to reduce India’s dependence on imported semiconductor components.
TCS and Virgin Atlantic Sign 7-Year Deal for AI & Cloud Transformation
In June 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global Information Technology(IT) services, consulting, and business-solutions leader and London (United Kingdom, UK)-headquartered Virgin Atlantic, a premium long-haul airline, extended their two-decade strategic partnership with a new seven-year agreement.
- This collaboration aims to accelerate digital transformation through cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Key Highlights of the Agreement:
i.TCS will deploy a cloud-first, AI-driven digital core to enhance Virgin Atlantic’s operational efficiency.
ii.A Technology Command Centre will be set up to provide real-time insights for faster decision-making.
iii.The collaboration will focus on crew management, cargo, engineering, and enterprise platforms.
Note: Virgin Atlantic has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050 and plans to transition to a fully next-generation aircraft fleet by 2028.
AP Signs MoU with NVIDIA to Boost AI Ecosystem
In June, 2025, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with California, United States of America (USA)-based NVIDIA Corporation, the world’s largest Artificial Intelligence (AI)-chip manufacturer, to develop and strengthen AI ecosystem in AP.
- The MoU aims to position AP as a national leader in India’s AI revolution by building a strong and inclusive ecosystem.
- It aligns with the AP’s vision of fostering innovation, skills development, research, and entrepreneurship.
i.The MoU provides training to 10,000 engineering students across AP in AI over the next two years with NVIDIA’s curriculum and technical guidance.
ii.500 AI startups from AP will gain entry into NVIDIA’s Inception Program, offering global exposure and essential resources.
iii.India’s first AI University is planned in collaboration with NVIDIA for advanced research and infrastructure.
Note: AP is already progressing on the Quantum Computing Village in Amaravati, developed with USA based IBM and Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Limited.
AP Government Signed MoU with NITI Aayog & ISEG Education Foundation on Energy Transition Roadmap
In June 2025, the state government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with New Delhi(Delhi) based National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) and New Delhi based Institute for Sustainability, Employment and Growth (ISEG Foundation) on the state energy road transition roadmap.
- The MoU was signed in the presence of N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister (CM) of AP.
- As per the MoU, the state government aims to increase the share of renewable in its power capacity additions.
Key Points:
i.Currently, AP has an installed power generation capacity of 27.3 Giga Watts (GW).
ii.Electricity demand has gradually increased from 55.6 Billion Units (BU) in 2019 to 69.7 BU in 2025. This demand is further expected to increase significantly, reaching 88.6 BU (in 2026) and an estimated 163.9 BU by 2035.
- Also, this growth is mainly driven by industrial and residential sectors, with respective increases of 4.8% and 5.1%.
iii.The state government of AP has laid out various targets under its Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which it aims to achieve by 2029:
- 78.50 GW solar; 35 GW wind; 22 GW pumped storage;150 Million Metric Tonnes per Annum (MMTPA) green hydrogen; 25 GW battery storage; 1,500 Kiloliters Per Day (KLPD) ethanol production; 5,000 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations and 10,000 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) bio-Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)/Compressed Bio Gas (CBG).

ii.MS Dhoni holds the record of only captain in cricket history to win all 3 ICC white-ball trophies i.e. India’s 1st T20 World Cup (2007), One Day International (ODI) World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013).
iii.Former Pakistan’s women cricket team captain, Sana Mir became the 1st woman from Pakistan to be included in the ICC Hall of Fame.

Indian Squash player Anahat Singh Wins Dual Honours at PSA Awards 2024–25In June 2025, India’s No. 1 women’s squash player, 17-year-old Anahat Singh(World No. 56), won two honours at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Awards 2024–25 held at the Book Rotunda, Birmingham, England (United Kingdom, UK).
- She clinched the Women’s Challenger Player of the Season award and shared the Women’s Young Player of the Season title with Egypt’s Amina Orfi (World No.5), who won her first PSA Gold-level title at the Singapore Open 2025.
Note: Anahat Singh became the youngest Indian to win these honours at the PSA Awards.

RBI’s Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar Appointed as Part-time Member of the 16th FCIn June 2025, T. Rabi Sankar, currently serving as Deputy Governor of Mumbai (Maharashtra) Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as a part-time member of the 16th Finance Commission(FC) (XVIFC). He will serve from the date of appointment to the date FC submits its report or October 31, 2025, whichever is earlier.
- He was appointed by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu on the recommendation of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance (MoF) which issued notification in accordance of clause (1) of Article 280 of the Constitution read with the provisions of the FC (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1951 (33 of 1951).
i.The appointment of T. Rabi Sankar came after the resignation of Ajay Narayan, one of the full-time members of 16th FC, on personal grounds.
ii.In 2023, the Government of India (GoI) constituted the 16th FC under the chairmanship of Arvind Panagariya, former vice-chairman of NITI Aayog.
iii.The commission is expected to submit its recommendations by October 31, 2025, which will apply for a 5 year period beginning from April 01, 2026.

CCI Approvals on 10th June 2025On June 10, 2025, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the following proposals:
i.The CCI has approved the acquisition of 40% shareholding in Pune (Maharashtra) based Kolte-Patil Developers Limited (Target), valued at approximately Rs.1,167 crore, by Singapore based BREP Asia III India Holding Company VII Private Limited (Acquirer).
ii.The CCI has approved the acquisition of less than 10% of the issued, subscribed and paid-up equity share capital of the Surat (Gujarat) based Goldi Solar Private Limited (Target) by (Acquirer) Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP) based Havells India Limited (HIL).

SBI MF, Goldman Sachs & Others Acquire 1.8% Stake in Bajaj Finserv for Rs. 5,506 crore
In June 2025, institutional investors acquired a 1.8% stake (2.86 crore shares) in Pune (Maharashtra) Bajaj Finserv Limited from promoter entities Pune-based Bajaj Holdings and Investment Limited and Mumbai (Maharashtra) based Jamnalal Sons Private Limited for Rs. 5,506.07 crore.
- The transaction occurred at an average price of Rs. 1,925.20 per share. Post-sale, the promoters’ holding decreased from 60.64% to 58.84%.
- The buyers include Mumbai-based State Bank of India (SBI) Mutual Fund (MF), JP Morgan India, SBI Life Insurance Company Limited, New York, United States of America (USA) based Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup Global, BoFA Securities, Paris (France) based Societe Générale, and Singapore-based Barclays Merchant Bank.
i.In a parallel transaction, Singapore-based Wabco Asia Private Limited (promoter of ZF Commercial Vehicle Control Systems India Limited) sold a 3.16% stake (6,00,000+ shares) for Rs. 791.63 crore to California (USA) based Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund, Mumbai based-Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund, HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company Limited, and others.
ii.The shares were sold at an average price of Rs. 13,191 per share, reducing Wabco Asia’s holding from 63.16% to 60%

Hyderabad-based TakeMe2Space to Launch India’s First ‘Thinking Data Compute’ SatelliteIn June 2025, Hyderabad (Telangana)-based startup TM2Space Technologies Private Limited(TakeMe2Space) announced its plan to launch India’s first thinking ‘data compute’ satellite, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered orbiter, aboard the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) by September 2025.
- This marks a significant innovation in India’s private space sector, with a satellite capable of onboard AI-inference, reducing reliance on ground-based processing systems and enhancing data delivery speed.
About the AI-Powered Satellite:
The upcoming satellite will differ from traditional ones by processing data in orbit using an AI inference model, which allows it to analyse and extract insights without needing to send raw data back to Earth.
i.Web-Based Access: Users can connect through OrbitLab, TakeMe2Space’s online platform, enabling remote model deployment from anywhere, including rural schools or remote labs.
ii.AI Functionality: The satellite will support real-time data interpretation for applications such as:
- Environmental Monitoring: Detecting oil spills, deforestation, or greenhouse gas emissions.
- Agricultural Analysis: Evaluating soil health and crop density in real time.
- Education & Research: Creating opportunities for live space-based experiments for students and researchers.
iii.Accessibility: TakeMe2Space aims to democratize space, allowing researchers, students, educators, and startups to access space technology affordably, priced at just USD 2 per minute, compared to the usual demand-based fees of USD 15–30 per square kilometer (sq.km).

SSLV is ISRO’s cost-effective launch vehicle designed to carry payloads up to 500 kilograms (kg) into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), catering to the small satellite market.
Note: TakeMe2Space raised Rs 5.5 crore in a pre-seed funding round led by Seafund in May 2025. The company intends to utilize these funds to develop and launch My Orbital Infrastructure-1(MOI-1), India’s first AI laboratory in space, offering satellite research opportunities to its early customers.

‘Rajnath Aam’: Newly Developed Mango Variety Named in Honour of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
In June 2025, Indian Horticulturist and Padma Shri Awardee Haji Kalimullah Khan, popularly known as ‘Mango Man of India’, named a newly developed mango variety ‘Rajnath Aam’ after Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD).
- The mango was developed using Khan’s signature grafting technique at his orchard in Malihabad, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh, UP), a region globally renowned for its diverse mango varieties.
i.He named the variety as ‘Rajnath Aam’ to honour Union Minister Rajnath Singh’s peaceful stance and call for dialogue following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), as part of his tradition of naming mangoes after notable figures to preserve their legacy.
ii.In the past, he has named mango varieties after several Indian personalities such as former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Indian Actress Aishwarya Rai, Indian politician Akhilesh Yadav, former President of Indian National Congress(INC) Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, and Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Note: Kalimullah Khan was honoured with the Padma Shri award in 2008 in the field of others for developing over 300 mango varieties.

Senior Congress Leader Thennala Balakrishna Pillai Passed Away
On June 6, 2025, Renowned Indian National Congress (INC) leader and former President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, passed away at the age of 95 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was born on March 11, 1930, in Soorand (Kollam), Kerala.
- He served twice as the President of KPCC, first from 1998 to 2001 and later from 2004 to 2005.
i.Thennala Balakrishna Pillai began his political career at ward-level Congress units, later becoming a six-decade-long party worker.
ii.He was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Adoor constituency, serving as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from 1977 to 1980 and again from 1982 to 1987.
iii.He represented Kerala in Rajya Sabha, from 1991 to 1998 and again from 2003 to 2009.
iv.He was also associated with several national-level bodies, including the Rubber Board, the National Shipping Board, and the National River Conservation Authority, among others.
