Union MoS Jitendra Singh Inaugurates India’s First Animal Stem Cell Biobank in Hyderabad, TelanganaOn August 9, 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge), Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), inaugurated India’s first-of-its-kind Animal Stem Cell Biobank and Animal Stem Cell Laboratory at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) in Hyderabad, Telangana.

  • He also laid the foundation stone of a new hostel block and Type-IV quarters worth Rs. 19.98 crores at NIAB, approved by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), MoS&T.

Animal Stem Cell Biobank and Laboratory:
Budget: The facility, spanning over 9,300 square feet (sq ft), is built at a cost of Rs.1.85 crores.
Focus: The biobank will focus on regenerative medicine and cellular therapies for livestock.The laboratory comprises Stem Cell Culture Unit, Three Dimension (3D) Bioprinter, Bacteria Culture Lab, Cryostorage Units, Autoclave Rooms.

  • It is equipped with advanced Air Handling systems, and uninterrupted power supply to advance research in disease modelling, tissue engineering, and reproductive biotechnology for livestock.

Support: The initiative is supported by the National Biopharma Mission (NBM) with future expansion plans to include biobanking of animal stem cells and their derivatives.

PM inaugurates, lays foundation stone of metro projects worth around Rs. 22,800 crores in Bengaluru, KarnatakaIn August 2025, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi inaugurated the yellow line of Bengaluru Metro, built at a cost of around Rs. 7,160 crores and also laid the foundation stone of Bengaluru metro Phase-3 project at the International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru (IIIT-B) auditorium.

  • The estimated cost of this phase-3 project is Rs. 15,610 crores.
  • The total route length of the project will be more than 44 kilometre (km) with 31 elevated stations.

  • The other two Vande Bharat trains were launched between Nagpur and Pune (Maharashtra) and between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Amritsar, Punjab.

Bengaluru Metro: With the opening of this yellow line, the operational metro network in Bengaluru will increase to over 96 km.
Orange Line: The PM also laid the foundation stone for Bangalore Metro’s Phase Three – the Orange Line.

  • The 44.8 km orange line will link the western stretch of ORR and extend along Magadi Road, with completion slated for 2029.

Part-funding: Companies like Infosys Foundation, Biocon, and Delta Electronics have provided part-funding for several key metro stations.

  • These corporate companies had provided their contribution in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.

India’s progress: The PM highlighted that the metro network is currently spread over 1000 kms across 24 cities, from just 5 cities in 2014.

  • This growth marks India as the third-largest metro network globally.

Overview of the President of the Philippines Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. State Visit to IndiaThe President of the Philippines Ferdinand Romualdez (R.) Marcos Jr. undertook a 5-day state visit to India from August 04, 2025 to August 08, 2025, at the invitation of the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.Release of Commemorative Stamp: Following the bilateral meeting, PM Modi and Philippine President jointly unveiled commemorative postal stamps to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries.

  • These postal stamps were themed on National Flowers of two countries i.e. Lotus (India) and Sampaguita (the Philippines).

Announcement of Strategic Partnership: Both India and The Philippines announced the ‘Declaration on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between the Government of India (GoI) and the Government of the Philippines’, marking a significant step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation.

  • This Strategic Partnership is guided by the comprehensive Plan of Action (2025-29) adopted by the two countries on August 05, 2025.

ToRs between Defence Forces: Among 14 MoUs signed, 3 Terms of References (ToRs) were signed between the Armies, Navies and Air Forces of India and the Philippines.

  • Also, India and the Philippines signed a ToR for improved maritime cooperation between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Philippine Coast Guard.

Total Business Agreements: Indian companies signed a total of 18 MoUs and Letter of Intents (LoIs) for investments in the Philippines in various sectos such as: Information Technology (IT), Telecommunication, Waste-to-Energy Generation, healthcare, business process management and digital infrastructure.

  • These agreements were exchanged in the presence of the Philippine President Marcos during the Philippines-India Business Forum held in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

BSNL Partners with Ericsson, Qualcomm, Cisco, and Nokia to Promote 5G, AI and Digital SkillsIn August 2025, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) signed a Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 4 global tech giants namely: Ericsson India Pvt. Limited; Qualcomm Technologies Inc., Cisco Systems, and Nokia Solutions and Networks India Pvt. Limited, aimed to drive digital transformation as well as strengthen the skilling ecosystem in India.

  • These MoUs were signed in the presence of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao (M.)Scindia, Ministry of Communications (MoC) during a ceremony held in New Delhi, Delhi.

Areas of Advance Training: These MoUs will roll out advance skilling programmes in 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ Machine Language (ML), networking, and digital technologies at Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh (MP).

  • These MoUs align with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the MoC plans to establish a Telecom Innovation, Research and Training Centre (TIRTC) at BRBRAITT, envisioned as  industry-led national hub.

Ericsson India: It will help in establishing a dedicated Ericsson 5G Centre of Excellence (CoE) at BRBRAITT.

  • It will offer hands-on 5G training as well as online learning modules under the Ericsson Educate Program to more than 2000 students annually.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII Multi-Storey Flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Karak Singh Marg in New Delhi, Delhi.

Design: The flats, designed to be self-sufficient, meets the standards of Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) 3-star rating by incorporating green technology and complies with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016.
Technology: It is constructed with the use of advanced construction technology, including monolithic concrete with aluminum shuttering.

Numbeo Safety Index Mid-2025: Mangalore Ranked as Safest City in India, Abu Dhabi Tops GloballyIn August 2025, Numbeo, a crowd-sourced global database, released Numbeo Safety Index Mid-2025 Rankings. As per the Index, Mangalore is ranked as the safest city in India and 49th globally with the score of 74.3. Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates, UAE) has topped the list with the score of 88.8.

  • Delhi has been ranked as the most unsafe city in India, 316th globally with the score of 41.

Category: The responses are scaled from 0 to 100, which are categorized into different levels. It includes Very low (below 20), Low (20 -40), Moderate (40 – 60), High (60-80), and Very High (above 80).
Features: The index features 391 cities from across the world.
Global: The Middle East region has dominated the list with 5 cities ranked in top 5. Four cities of UAE and one city of Qatar has occupied the spots. Ras al-Khaimah of UAE has been ranked 6th with a score of 83.8.

Sebi proposes single-window gateway for trusted foreign investorsIn August 2025, the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed a single-window gateway called SWAGAT-FI to ease regulatory process for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs).

Key Highlights:
SWAGAT-FI: The Sebi’s Single Window Automatic & Generalised Access for Trusted Foreign Investors (SWAGAT-FI) aims to offer a unified, streamlined and consistent access mechanism for certain categories of FI that are verified as low-risk category.

  • This framework will help reduce regulatory complexity, simplify compliance, and enhance India’s attractiveness as an investment destination.

Target: This initiative targets government-owned funds, central banks, sovereign wealth funds, multilateral entities, and highly regulated public retail funds, which currently contribute over 70% of FPI assets under custody.
Proposed relaxations under SWAGAT-FI
Single Window: It aims to provide eligible investors a streamlined, single-window registration process for both FPIs and Foreign Venture Capital Investors (FVCIs), reducing paperwork, cost, and regulatory complexity.
Review of Know Your Customer (KYC): Currently, the KYC of FPIs are reviewed every year or three years based on the risk categorisation, while FVCI, are reviewed every year/5 years.

  • Now, it is proposed to increase the periodicity for continuance of registration and review of KYC of SWAGAT-FIs to 10 years.

Increased participation of NRIs/OCI/RI: Currently, aggregate contribution from non-resident Indian (NRI), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Resident Indian individuals (RI) in an FPI is capped at 50% of the total corpus of the FPI.

  • Now, it has proposed that restrictions on these contributions from NRIs, OCIs and RIs will be removed for eligible SWAGAT-FI funds, particularly benefiting mutual funds (MFs) with diversified retail bases.

Single Demat Account: It is proposed to permit SWAGAT-FIs to use a single demat account for holding all securities acquired as FPI or FVCI or as foreign investor investing in units of investment vehicles, on an optional basis.

FPI Data: As of June 30, 2025, India had 11,913 registered FPIs, collectively holding assets valued at Rs. 81trillion (tn), up from Rs 51tn in March 2022.

KSFE Becomes India’s First Miscellaneous NBFC to Cross Rs 1 Lakh Crore Business Turnover
In August 2025, Kerala State Financial Enterprises (KSFE), headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, became the first miscellaneous non-banking financial company (NBFC) in India to surpass a business turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore, doubling its business from Rs 50,000 crore within four years.

BEML Secured USD 1 Million Overseas Rail and Metro Contract from Malaysia
On August 9, 2025, Bengaluru (Karnataka) based Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a Schedule ‘A’ company under the Ministry of Defence, secured its first overseas rail and metro contract worth USD 1 million (around Rs 8.3 crore) from Malaysia for retrofitting and reconditioning its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system.

On August 9, 2025, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company Limited (Bajaj Allianz Life), a Joint Venture (JV) between Allianz SE and Bajaj Finserv Limited, has acquired 2.1% stake (1.36 crore equity shares) in JM Financial Home Loans Limited (JMFHLL) for Rs.65.5 crores, valued at a price of Rs.48 per share.

India Shines at World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze MeetOn August 10, 2025, The Indian Open World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Meet 2025, organized at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, marked India’s first-ever hosting of a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level (Category C) event.

  • The one-day meet featured over 150 athletes from 17 countries competing in 19 events, with a total prize purse of USD 25,000.
  • More than 90 participants were from India, while the remaining athletes represented various international nations including  Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Korea, Djibouti, Iraq, and Great Britain, competing across track and field disciplines.

Shahnavaz Khan Breaks U18 National Record:
17-year-old Shahnavaz Khan (Uttar Pradesh) produced a historic performance in the Men’s Long Jump, leaping 8.04 metres to clinch the silver medal.

Rishabh Yadav Wins Bronze in Compound Archery at World Games 2025
In August 2025, Rishabh Yadav, won the bronze medal in the Men’s Individual Compound Archery at the World Games 2025, held in Chengdu, China (7th to 17th August 2025). This marked India’s first-ever individual archery medal and the sixth overall medal at the World Games.

  • The World Games, held every four years since 1981, feature non-Olympic sports. India, a participant since the first edition, has won 5 medals so far, including a 2013 Gold by Aditya Mehta in Billiards. This year, India is competing in Archery, Billiards, Roller Skating, Wushu, and Racquetball.

1st observance: The first observance of World Lion Day took place in 2013.
Partnership with National Geographic: In 2009, Dereck and Beverly Joubert partnered with National Geographic to launch the Big Cat Initiative (BCI) for big cat conservation.

Asiatic (Indian) Lion Status – 2025: Population Growth increased from 674 (2020) to 891 (2025), a 32.2% rise in 5 years; over 70% growth in the last decade.
African Lion Population:  A LionAid report from July 2025 provides more detailed regional estimates, suggesting about 13,014 lions in eastern and southern Africa, plus around 342 lions in western and central Africa—totaling roughly 13,356 African lions.

World Biofuel Day – August 10World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th August worldwide to spread awareness about the benefits of using non-fossil fuels (green fuels) instead of traditional fossil fuels. Biofuels are seen as a cleaner and more sustainable energy option.

  • The day focuses on how biofuels are renewable, eco-friendly, and help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  • It also honours Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel, the French-German engineer who invented the diesel engine (also called the Compression Ignition engine) in the 19th century.

Background: Since 2015, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), Government of India(GoI), has been observing World Biofuel Day.

  • The aim is to promote the use of blended biofuel in India.
  • India is the third-largest oil consumer in the world, after the United States and China.
