Overview of UK PM Keir Starmer’s Visit to India from October 8 to 9, 2025Keir Starmer, Prime Minister (PM) of the United Kingdom (UK), visited India from October 8 to 9, 2025, at the invitation of PM of India Narendra Modi, marking his first official visit to India.
- His visit follows the visit of PM Narendra Modi in July 2025, when India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed.
Highlights of UK PM Keir Starmer’s Visit to India:
Visit to Mumbai: On October 8, 2025, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Mumbai, Maharashtra, where he addressed Indian business leaders to boost India-UK trade and investment ties.
Global Fintech Fest 2025: On October 9, 2025, UK PM Keir Starmer attended the 6th edition of the Global Fintech Fest (GFF), the world’s largest fintech festival, at Jio World Centre in Mumbai.
- During the visit, India and the UK have launched India-UK Fintech Corridor to boost financial and technological cooperation.
CEO Forum meeting: UK PM Keir Starmer and PM Narendra Modi welcomed the inaugural CEO Forum meeting in Mumbai during the India-UK Summit and expressed hope for the early ratification of the India–UK CETA to unlock its benefits.
- During the meeting both the countries agreed to reset the India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO).
Key Outcomes: During the visit PM Keir Starmer announced the establishment of campuses of nine UK universities in India, following the approval of University Grants Commission (UGC) under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020).
- Launched India-UK Connectivity and Innovation Centre and India-UK Joint Centre for AI.
- Technology Startup Fund was launched under a UK-India MoU with the State Bank of India(SBI), supports entrepreneurs in sectors such as climate technology and AI.
- A Letter of Intent(LoI) was signed between India’s Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the UK’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to strengthen health research initiative.
- India signed a 350 million Euro (USD 468 million) defence agreement with UK for the supply of Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs), also known as Martlet missiles, to the Indian Army (IA).
MoT Notified Major Amendments to PLI Scheme for TextilesIn October 2025, the Ministry of Textiles (MoT) has notified major amendments to the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Manmade Fibres(MMF) apparel, MMF fabrics, and technical textiles.
- These amendments aimed to address industry challenges, improve ease of doing business, promote fresh investments and drive growth in the textile sector.

Key Changes:
Expansion : The MoT has expanded the list of eligible products under the PLI scheme by adding 8 new Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes for MMF Apparel and 9 new HSN codes for MMF Fabrics.
Relaxation: Applicants have now been allowed to set up project units within the existing companies, eliminating the previous requirement to set up new entities.
Revised Investment Thresholds: As per revised PLI scheme, with effect from August 01 2025, the minimum investment requirement for all new applicants has been reduced by 50% i.e. from Rs 300 crore to Rs 150 crore (in Part-I category) and Rs 100 crore to Rs 50 crore (in Part-II category) of the scheme.
Reduced Incremental Turnover Criteria: As per MoT official notification, starting from Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), applicants are now required to demonstrate a minimum of 10% incremental turnover over the previous year to qualify for incentives from Year 2 onwards, compared to previous turnover criteria of 25%.
Opening of PLI Scheme Portal: In order to encourage wider participation from the textile industry, MoT has announced that PLI scheme application portal will remain open until December 31, 2025.
About PLI Scheme for Textiles Sector:
Background: In September 2021, the Government of India (GoI) had approved the PLI scheme for textiles sector; with total budget outlay of Rs 10,683 crore for period of 5 years.
Objective: To promote the production of MMF apparel & fabrics and products of technical textiles in the country.
Total Beneficiaries: Till now, 74 participant companies who have pledged the total investment of Rs 28,711 crore, selected as eligible beneficiaries under PLI scheme for textiles.

NTPC REL Signed MoU with Gujarat Govt for 15 GW Renewable Projects
In October 2025, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Gujarat to develop 15 Gigawatt (GW) renewable energy projects in Gujarat during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference held at Mehsana, Gujarat.

In October 2025, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), under the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop, test, and certify indigenous automotive technologies.

ICG Conducted Two-day ReSAREX-25 at Sea off Panambur Coast
In October 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) of Karnataka unit conducted a two-day ‘Regional Search and Rescue Exercise (ReSAREX-25)’ at Arabian Sea off the Panambur coast in Mangaluru, Karnataka.
- The two-day long maritime exercise was organised under the aegis of ICG Regional Headquarters (West), Mumbai.

Mass Rescue Operation (MRO): The contingency plan for a Mass Rescue Operation (MRO) was activated during the exercise. MRCC, Mumbai, played the role of Search and Research Mission Coordinator (SMC), while the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (New Mangaluru, Karnataka) operated as the Command Post.
Key Achievement: ReSAREX-25 has successfully validated the operational efficiency and readiness, inter-agency communication, and rescue coordination mechanism of all stakeholders in dealing with mass casualty incidents at sea.
MoHUA Observed World Habitat Day 2025 in New Delhi

WTO Lowered Global Trade Growth Forecast to 0.5% for CY26In October 2025, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) released its latest ‘Global Trade Outlook and Statistics Update: October 2025’ report. The report has lowered its forecast for global merchandise trade volume growth to 0.5% for Calendar Year 2026 (CY26), from its previous estimate of 1.8%.
- However, for CY25, WTO has raised its projection from 0.9% (August 2025) to 2.4%.
- The growth projection for CY25 was driven mainly by the front-loading of imports into the United States of America (USA) ahead of tariff hikes and growth in the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-related goods.

- Also, robust growth in emerging markets and increased demand for AI-related goods like: semiconductors, servers and telecommunication equipment, led the global trade growth.
Global GDP: The report has projected that global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for CY25 at 2.7%, which is further expected to decrease marginally by 10 basis points (bps) i.e. at 2.6% for CY26.
Global Services Growth: The report has further projected that the growth rate of global services exports will decrease from 6.8% (in CY24) to 4.6% (in CY25) and to 4.4% (in CY26).
Regional Trade Outlook: Asia and Africa are set for strongest export growth in 2025, while Europe slows and North America declines; all regions face weaker imports in 2026.
- In the first half of 2025, most WTO regions saw positive year-on-year export growth, with Asia leading at 10.4%.

Tribute Names: Lamellipalpodes kurumba honors the Kurumba tribe for conserving Nilgiris biodiversity, while Lamellipalpodes debprasama pays tribute to the lead researchers’ parents.
Species Count: With this discovery, India now accounts for 5 of the 14 Lamellipalpodes species known globally.
Collaborative Study: The research was a joint effort by iForNature Nature Club Laboratory, Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust (WNCT), Kalyani University, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), and Pondicherry University (PU).

About TT Jagannathan:
Overview: T.T. Jagannathan was a transformative leader in India’s kitchen appliance industry and played a pivotal role in making TTK Prestige a household name. His focus on innovation, quality, and safety established Prestige as a trusted Indian brand.
Early Career: In the early 1970s, T.T. Jagannathan became the Managing Director (MD) of TTK Prestige (then Prestige Pressure Cookers) during a critical financial phase. His mandate was to revive and rebuild the company from near collapse through restructuring and innovation.
Reforms:He modernized manufacturing processes, implemented scientific production systems, and prioritized brand reliability and customer safety. He designed the globally acclaimed “Gasket Release System” — a pressure cooker safety innovation that prevented explosions by safely releasing steam.
Leadership: Under his leadership, TTK Prestige evolved into a globally recognized kitchen solutions brand, expanding into non-stick cookware, gas stoves, induction cooktops, and mixer grinders.
He became Chairman in 1975, joined the Board in 1984, and later served as Executive and Non-Executive Chairman.
In March 2025, he was named Chairman Emeritus, honoring his lifetime contributions, and retired as Non-Executive Promoter Director in August 2025.
Author: He authored the book “Disrupt and Conquer: How TTK Prestige Became a Billion-Dollar Company”, detailing the company’s turnaround and growth journey.
Awards: In 1996, he won the “Distinguished Alumnus Award” at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, Chennai (Tamil Nadu, TN).
- In 2025, he received the 2024 Hurun India Legacy Leadership Award at The Most Respected Entrepreneur Awards 2025 from Omniyat and Hurun India.
