- The ceremony was presided by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW).
- The 3-day conference was organised to commemorate the birth centenary (100th) of Prof. Dr. Mankombu Sambasivan (M.S.) Swaminathan, popularly known as Father Green Revolution in India.
Theme: The theme of the conference was ‘Evergreen Revolution- Path to Bio-Happiness’.

Union Cabinet Approves Budgetary Support for MERITE Scheme with an outlay of Rs.4200 CroresOn August 8, 2025, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved the proposal for implementation of the Central Sector Scheme (CSS), Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) Scheme, in 275 technical institutions comprising 175 engineering institutions and 100 polytechnics.
- The scheme, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to enhance quality, equity, and governance, for a period from 2025-26 to 2029-30, with total financial outlay of Rs.4,200 crores, including Rs. 2,100 crore loan from the World Bank.
MERITE Scheme:
Support: Under the scheme, 275 Government and Government-aided technical institutions such as National Institute of Technology (NIT), State Engineering Institutions, Polytechnics and Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs) will be selected, benefiting about 7.5 lakh students.
- The departments of state or Union Territory (UT), handling technical education sector will also be supported under the scheme.
Outputs: The scheme envisages outcomes such as digitalization strategies in participating states or UTs, development of guidelines for multidisciplinary programs among technical courses, increase in learning and employability skills of students, increase in transition rate of students across student groups, strengthened research and innovation environment.
Cabinet Approves Rs. 4,250 Crore Special Development Packages for Assam and TripuraOn August 8, 2025, The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four new components under the Central Sector Scheme of Special Development Packages (SDPs) for Assam and Tripura. The total central outlay is Rs. 4,250 crores, and the Government of Assam supplements Rs. 3,000 crores, making the total financial implication of these components to Rs. 7,250 crores.
- The development packages aim to promote peace, rehabilitation, and inclusion through focused infrastructure and socio-economic development projects.
Note: The approval follows the success of previous MoS-based initiatives for Bodo and Karbi groups, which resulted in enhanced peace and development in Assam.
About the approved four new components:
The three components for Assam, with a combined outlay of Rs. 4,000 crores over five years (2025-26 to 2029-30),
Adivasi Infrastructure: Rs. 500 crores for development in Adivasi-inhabited areas of Assam
Dimasa Community Infrastructure: Rs. 500 crores for development in North Cacher Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) areas, inhabited by members of the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) and Dimasa People’s Supreme Council (DPSC).
ULFA-Affected Areas: Based on the 2023 MoS with United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) groups, Rs. 3,000 crores is for broad-based infrastructure development across Assam.
One component for Tripura, with a budget of ₹250 crore over four years (2025-26 to 2028-29).

MHI Extends PM E-DRIVE Scheme Tenure by 2 Years From 31 March 2026 to 31 March 2028On August 8, 2025, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), announced the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme tenure by two years till 31st March 2028.
- Earlier, the scheme was notified for a period of two years till 31st March 2026, While incentives for electric two- and three-wheelers will cease in March 2026, subsidies for other vehicle categories, including e-buses, e-trucks and e-ambulances, will continue subject to fund availability until March 2028.

Launch: It was notified on September 29, 2024, by the MHI, Government of India (GOI) with the Budget outlay of Rs.10,900 crores and an aim to promote faster adoption of electric mobility in India, particularly for commercial and public transport segments.

Cabinet Approvals on August 8, 2025On 8 August 2025, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved the following proposals
The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, has approved the continuation of targeted subsidies for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) consumers in Financial Year 2025-26 (FY 2026) to keep LPG ( Liquefied Petroleum Gas) affordable for low-income households and maintain its usage amid global price fluctuations.
- The scheme will involve a total expenditure of Rs 12,000 crore.
- A subsidy of Rs 300 will be given for each 14.2 kilogram (kg) LPG cylinder, for up to 9 refills a year. For smaller 5 kg cylinders, the subsidy will be provided in proportion to the size.
The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi, has approved Rs 30,000 crore as compensation to three public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) based in New Delhi (Delhi), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) based in Mumbai (Maharashtra), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) also based in Mumbai.
- This compensation is for the losses they incurred in supplying domestic LPG at regulated prices. It will help these companies meet key expenses.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by PM Modi, has approved the construction of a 46 Kilometre (km), 4-lane stretch between Marakkanam and Puducherry in Tamil Nadu (TN).
- This road is part of the East Coast Road and will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total cost of Rs 2,157 crore.
- Of this, Rs 1,118 crore is for construction, while Rs 442 crore will be used for land acquisition.

IndiaAI and NCG Launch CATCH Grant Program to Support AI Innovation for Cancer Treatment
In August 2025, IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IndiaAI IBD), under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), announced the launch of the Cancer Artificial Intelligence & Technology Challenge (CATCH) Grant Program, in collaboration with National Cancer Grid (NCG), established under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) by the Government of India (GOI).

DARPG Partners with RTS Commissioners for Improvement of e-services under NeSDA, Issues Guidelines for NAeG 2026On August 8, 2025, The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoPPGP), has partnered with Right to Services (RTS) Commissioners of States and Union Territories (UTs) to enhance the e-services and strengthen the public service delivery framework under the National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment (NeSDA) Way Forward.

Propellant: It uses Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) based solid propellant and is equipped with a high-temperature nozzle for thermal protection during combustion.
Objective: The objective of the test is to validate the thrust profile and combustion stability, check the thermal integrity of the nozzle, and measure structural performance under high pressure.
Name significance: The motor is named after Former President of India, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen (A.P.J) Abdul Kalam, honouring his contributions to the space and missile programs of India. He is called as the ‘Missile Man of India’.
Initiative Alignment: The test is in alignment with Indian Space Policy 2023, an initiative by the Government of India (GOI) for providing the required technical infrastructure and managerial guidance for the Private space companies to contribute to the space sector.
About Vikram 1:
Launch: It is the first orbital-class LV, built by Skyroot Aerospace, an Indian private aerospace manufacturer. It is a 3-stage solid propulsion LV designed to be a small satellite launcher, offering fast and on-demand access to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), scheduled to be launched in 2025.
Payload: The vehicle is designed with a payload capacity of approximately from 290 to 320-kilogram (kg) to 500-kilometre (km) Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO), and approximately 480 kg to 500 km Low-Inclination Orbit (LIO).

UN Declaration – 1st Decade: In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/49/214, declaring 9th August of each year during the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004) as the IDWIP.

World Sanskrit Day 2025 – August 9
World Sanskrit Day, also known as International Sanskrit Day/Sanskrit Diwas/Vishva Samskrita Dinam, is annually observed across the globe on Shravana Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana (Sawan) to promote Sanskrit, one of India’s oldest languages.
- World Sanskrit Day 2025 was observed on August 9 2025.
- World Sanskrit Day 2024 was observed on 19th August 2024 and World Sanskrit Day 2026 will be observed on 28 August 2026.
- Sanskrit Week 2025 will be observed from 6 to 12 August 2025.
Background:
Government Initiative: In 1969, the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI), directed that Sanskrit Diwas be celebrated at both central and state levels across India.
1st Observance: World Sanskrit Day was first celebrated in 1969 by GoI.
Commemoration: The day marks the birth anniversary of Panini, the renowned Sanskrit scholar and grammarian.
Ancient Origin: Sanskrit is among the world’s oldest languages and is regarded as the “Mother of All Languages” as well as the “Language of the Gods.”
Classical Status: In 2005, the GoI declared Sanskrit as a Classical Language of India and included it in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which lists 22 languages.

Chhattisgarh Government Inks Agreement with NHPC for 1,800 MW PSP
In August 2025, Government of Chhattisgarh, along with Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL), signed an agreement with NHPC Limited (formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited) to develop two Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) with capacity of 1800 Megawatt (MW).

Two Projects: The two projects include development of a PSP of 800 MW at Hasdeo Bango in Korba district worth Rs.3,417 crores, and a PSP of 1000 MW in Kurund district, with an estimated investment of Rs.6,000 crores.
Pumped Storage: The Pumped Storage systems also called Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH), stores energy in the form of elevated water. During the off-peak hours, the surplus power from Renewable Energy (RE)-based plants is used to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir.
- During peak hours, the water is released from the upper reservoir, flows through turbines, generating electricity.
