PM Narendra Modi Inaugurated Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New DelhiIn August 2025, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference held at Pusa in New Delhi, Delhi, from August 07 to August 09, 2025.

• The ceremony was presided by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW).
• The 3-day conference was organised to commemorate the birth centenary (100th) of Prof. Dr. Mankombu Sambasivan (M.S.) Swaminathan, popularly known as Father Green Revolution in India.

Theme: The theme of the conference was ‘Evergreen Revolution- Path to Bio-Happiness’.
Release of Commemorative Coin: During the inaugural event, PM Modi released an Rs 100 commemorative coin and centenary memorial stamp in the honour of Dr. Swaminathan’s exceptional contributions to agriculture and food security.
1st Recipient: Nigerian Scientist Prof. Ademola A. Adenle became the 1st recipient to receive the Global M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace award.

Union Cabinet Approves Budgetary Support for MERITE Scheme with an outlay of Rs.4200 CroresOn August 8, 2025, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved the proposal for implementation of the Central Sector Scheme (CSS), Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) Scheme, in 275 technical institutions comprising 175 engineering institutions and 100 polytechnics.

• The scheme, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to enhance quality, equity, and governance, for a period from 2025-26 to 2029-30, with total financial outlay of Rs.4,200 crores, including Rs. 2,100 crore loan from the World Bank.

MERITE Scheme:
Support: Under the scheme, 275 Government and Government-aided technical institutions such as National Institute of Technology (NIT), State Engineering Institutions, Polytechnics and Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs) will be selected, benefiting about 7.5 lakh students.

• The departments of state or Union Territory (UT), handling technical education sector will also be supported under the scheme.

Outputs: The scheme envisages outcomes such as digitalization strategies in participating states or UTs, development of guidelines for multidisciplinary programs among technical courses, increase in learning and employability skills of students, increase in transition rate of students across student groups, strengthened research and innovation environment.

Cabinet Approves Rs. 4,250 Crore Special Development Packages for Assam and TripuraOn August 8, 2025, The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four new components under the Central Sector Scheme of Special Development Packages (SDPs) for Assam and Tripura. The total central outlay is Rs. 4,250 crores, and the Government of Assam supplements Rs. 3,000 crores, making the total financial implication of these components to Rs. 7,250 crores.

• The development packages aim to promote peace, rehabilitation, and inclusion through focused infrastructure and socio-economic development projects.

Note: The approval follows the success of previous MoS-based initiatives for Bodo and Karbi groups, which resulted in enhanced peace and development in Assam.
About the approved four new components:
The three components for Assam, with a combined outlay of Rs. 4,000 crores over five years (2025-26 to 2029-30),
Adivasi Infrastructure: Rs. 500 crores for development in Adivasi-inhabited areas of Assam
Dimasa Community Infrastructure: Rs. 500 crores for development in North Cacher Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) areas, inhabited by members of the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) and Dimasa People’s Supreme Council (DPSC).
ULFA-Affected Areas: Based on the 2023 MoS with United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) groups, Rs. 3,000 crores is for broad-based infrastructure development across Assam.
One component for Tripura, with a budget of ₹250 crore over four years (2025-26 to 2028-29).

MHI Extends PM E-DRIVE Scheme Tenure by 2 Years From 31 March 2026 to 31 March 2028On August 8, 2025, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), announced the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme tenure by two years till 31st March 2028.

• Earlier, the scheme was notified for a period of two years till 31st March 2026, While incentives for electric two- and three-wheelers will cease in March 2026, subsidies for other vehicle categories, including e-buses, e-trucks and e-ambulances, will continue subject to fund availability until March 2028.

About PM E-DRIVE Scheme:
Aim: The PM E-DRIVE Scheme aims to accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs), establish robust charging infrastructure, and strengthen the EV manufacturing ecosystem in India.
Incentives: Buyers of electric two- and three-wheelers are eligible for demand incentives of Rs 5,000 per (Kilo Watt hour) kWh in FY25 and Rs 2,500 per kWh in Financial Year 2026, capped at 15 per cent of the ex-factory vehicle price.
Launch: It was notified on September 29, 2024, by the MHI, Government of India (GOI) with the Budget outlay of Rs.10,900 crores and an aim to promote faster adoption of electric mobility in India, particularly for commercial and public transport segments.

• E-buses, supported by a Rs.4,391 crore allocation for deploying 14,028 units, require a post selection process from March 2026, underscoring the need for additional time.

Cabinet Approvals on August 8, 2025On 8 August 2025, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved the following proposals
The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, has approved the continuation of targeted subsidies for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) consumers in Financial Year 2025-26 (FY 2026)  to keep LPG ( Liquefied Petroleum Gas) affordable for low-income households and maintain its usage amid global price fluctuations.

• The scheme will involve a total expenditure of Rs 12,000 crore.
• A subsidy of Rs 300 will be given for each 14.2 kilogram (kg) LPG cylinder, for up to 9 refills a year. For smaller 5 kg cylinders, the subsidy will be provided in proportion to the size.

The Union Cabinet  chaired by PM Modi, has approved Rs 30,000 crore as compensation to three public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) based in New Delhi (Delhi),  Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) based in Mumbai (Maharashtra), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) also based in Mumbai.

• This compensation is for the losses they incurred in supplying domestic LPG at regulated prices. It will help these companies meet key expenses.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by PM Modi, has approved the construction of a 46 Kilometre (km), 4-lane stretch between Marakkanam and Puducherry in Tamil Nadu (TN).

• This road is part of the East Coast Road and will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a total cost of Rs 2,157 crore.
• Of this, Rs 1,118 crore is for construction, while Rs 442 crore will be used for land acquisition.

Government e-Marketplace marks 9th Foundation DayGovernment e Marketplace (GeM), India’s national public procurement portal, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), marked its 9th Foundation Day on 9th August 2025 to highlight GeM’s journey in transforming public procurement in India through transparency and efficiency.

• This portal aligns with the Prime Minister’s(PM’s) vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance” in connecting sellers and service providers across the country.

About the 9th GeM Foundation Day:
Theme: The 2025 theme for the 9th GeM Foundation Day is ”Ease, Access and Inclusion”

• The Foundation Day was marked by a special GeM Seller Samvad event on August 6, 2025, fostering dialogue and partnership between government buyers and sellers.

Key Reforms: The Government of India (GoI) announced the Elimination of Caution Money for Sellers, Rationalisation of Vendor Assessment Fees and a Reduction in Transaction Charges, which results in exemption for 97% of orders on this day.
About GeM:
Overview: It is a digital procurement system connecting sellers and service providers across the country.

• It includes women entrepreneurs, startups, micro and small enterprises (MSEs), artisans, self-help groups (SHGs) and Divyangjans.

Background: It was launched on 9 August 2016 by MoC&I as part of the Digital India initiative to reform and digitise the public procurement system.
Development Organizations: It was developed and is maintained by the GeM Special Purpose Vehicle (GeM SPV) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
Features: It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered tools and a multilingual Learning Management System (LMS) to facilitate access to public procurement

• It also features voice-enabled navigation and region-specific training modules that support onboarding and transactions.

Notable Achievements: In FY-25, it recorded transactions worth Rs. 5.4 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) with over 1.5 lakh women-led enterprises along with startups, self-help groups (SHGs), artisans and micro and small enterprises (MSEs).

IndiaAI and NCG Launch CATCH Grant Program to Support AI Innovation for Cancer Treatment
In August 2025, IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IndiaAI IBD), under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), announced the launch of the Cancer Artificial Intelligence & Technology Challenge (CATCH) Grant Program, in collaboration with National Cancer Grid (NCG), established under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) by the Government of India (GOI).

Aim: The initiative aims to support the development and deployment of AI solutions to strengthen cancer screening, diagnostics, treatment support, and healthcare operations across India.
Fund: The program, co-funded by IndiaAI and NCG, will offer up to Rs.50 lakhs for each project in the pilot phase to selected teams, comprising technology innovators and clinical institutions.

• The successful pilot projects will be eligible for additional support of up to Rs.1 crore through IndiaAI for wider deployment across the NCG network.

Focus: The challenge will focus on categories, including AI-enabled screening, diagnostics, clinical decision support, patient engagement, operational efficiency, research, and data curation.
Eligibility: The eligible applicants include startups, health technology companies, academic institutions, and public or private hospitals.

NITI Aayog Launches ‘Work for Viksit Bharat’ Portal for Skilled Hiring
On August 8, 2025, The NITI Aayog, a policy think tank under the Government of India (GoI), has introduced the “Work for Viksit Bharat” portal to recruit professionals for national development initiatives.

• The portal aims to recruit professionals across sectors like economics, big data, infrastructure, climate change, telecom, and IT, supporting India’s Viksit Bharat growth vision.

Processing: Available online at workforbharat.niti.gov.in, the portal allows candidates to register, complete their profile, select areas of interest, and apply for roles in ongoing national development projects
Policy Domains: The portal features vacancies in areas such as Agriculture Policy, Education, Health, Urban Infrastructure, Governance, Science & Technology, and Women & Child Development, among others.
Associated Scheme:  The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoL&E) activated PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY) on 1 August 2025 to create 3.5 crore jobs by 31 July 2027, including 1.92 crore for first-time workers, with an outlay of Rs. 99,446 crores.

DARPG Partners with RTS Commissioners for Improvement of e-services under NeSDA, Issues Guidelines for NAeG 2026On August 8, 2025, The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoPPGP), has partnered with Right to Services (RTS) Commissioners of States and Union Territories (UTs) to enhance the e-services and strengthen the public service delivery framework under the National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment (NeSDA) Way Forward.

States: Currently, the states and UTs across India are reporting more than 22,000 e-Services under the NeSDA Framework. The services offered are evaluated through the AAKLAN benchmarking tool, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
DARPG Notifies the Scheme for NAeG 2026:

DARPG issued the scheme guidelines for the 23rd National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG), which is presented annually to honour and encourage excellence in implementing e-Governance initiatives.

• The award aims to recognize the achievements, foster the sharing of effective practices, and promote innovation in digital governance.

Categories: The nominations can be submitted under 7 categories, including

• Government Process Re-engineering by use of technology for Digital Transformation
• Innovation by Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other new age technologies for providing Citizen-Centric Services.
• Best e-Gov Practices/ Innovation in Cyber Security
• District Level Initiatives in e-Governance
• Grassroots Level Initiatives by Gram Panchayats or equivalent Traditional Local Bodies for Deepening/ Widening of Service Delivery.
• Replication and Scaling of Nationally Awarded and Mission-mode e-Governance Projects by States/UTs/ Districts.
• Digital Transformation by use of data analytics in digital platforms by Central Ministries/ States/ UTs

Award: The NAeG 2026 will comprise a trophy, a certificate, an incentive of Rs.10 lakhs for each Gold Awardee, and Rs. 5 lakhs for each Silver Awardee.

• Under NAeG 2026, 16 awards, including 10 Gold Awards and 6 Silver Awards will be awarded.

RBI Imposes Rs. 75 Lakh Monetary Penalty on ICICI Bank
In August 2025, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 75 lakhs on Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based ICICI Bank Limited for breaching regulatory guidelines

Reason for Penalty

The violations were related to:

• Valuation of Properties – Empanelment of Valuers: Failure to conduct property valuations through independent RBI-approved valuers for certain mortgage loans.
• Opening of Current Accounts by Banks – Need for Discipline: Opening or maintaining current accounts in breach of RBI’s regulatory restrictions.

Inspection & Action

• The action follows the Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE 2024) of ICICI Bank, referencing its financial position as of 31 March 2024. The RBI found deficiencies in regulatory compliance, warranting the monetary penalty.

BSNL and NRL signs MoU to Implement India’s First 5G CNPN through Industry 4.0 Adoption
On August 3, 2025, New Delhi (Delhi)-based Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Guwahati (Assam)-based Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the “Industry 4.0 Workshop for Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs)” organised by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) in Guwahati, Assam.

About the BSNL and NRL Collaboration:
Objective: The collaboration aims to implement India’s first 5G Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) in the refinery sector to deliver secure, ultra-reliable, and real-time industrial connectivity.
Scope: Facilitates Industry 4.0 adoption, enabling technologies such as Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered 3D Printing, Virtual Formulation, Augmented/Virtual/Mixed Reality (AR/VR/MR), Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data Analytics.
Impact: It is expected to be a replicable model for other industrial sectors and create employment, especially in the North Eastern Region.

• The initiative supports Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Government of India’s “Whole of Government” (WoG) approach

Skyroot Aerospace Conducts Static Test of Vikram-1 Rocket’s KALAM-1200

In August 2025, Skyroot Aerospace Private Limited (SAPL) successfully conducted the first static test of KALAM-1200 solid rocket motor, the first stage of the Vikram-1 Launch Vehicle (LV), at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh (AP).

• The test marks a significant step in the development of Vikram-1, built by Skyroot Aerospace.

About KALAM-1200:
Motor: It is an 11 metre (m) long, 1.7 m diameter monolithic composite motor, carrying Propellant Mass of 30 tonnes (t). It can generate up to 1200 kilonewton (kN) of peak thrust in space.
Propellant: It uses Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) based solid propellant and is equipped with a high-temperature nozzle for thermal protection during combustion.
Objective: The objective of the test is to validate the thrust profile and combustion stability, check the thermal integrity of the nozzle, and measure structural performance under high pressure.
Name significance: The motor is named after Former President of India, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen (A.P.J) Abdul Kalam, honouring his contributions to the space and missile programs of India. He is called as the ‘Missile Man of India’.
Initiative Alignment: The test is in alignment with Indian Space Policy 2023, an initiative by the Government of India (GOI) for providing the required technical infrastructure and managerial guidance for the Private space companies to contribute to the space sector.
About Vikram 1:
Launch: It is the first orbital-class LV, built by Skyroot Aerospace, an Indian private aerospace manufacturer. It is a 3-stage solid propulsion LV designed to be a small satellite launcher, offering fast and on-demand access to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), scheduled to be launched in 2025.
Payload: The vehicle is designed with a payload capacity of approximately from 290 to 320-kilogram (kg) to 500-kilometre (km) Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO), and approximately 480 kg to 500 km Low-Inclination Orbit (LIO).
Role of KALAM-1200: It provides the initial high-thrust impulse to lift the rocket and accelerate it through the dense lower atmosphere.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025 – August 9 

The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (IDWIP), also known as World Tribal Day, is annually observed across the globe on 9th August to raise awareness and promote the rights, cultures, and identities of Indigenous communities while highlighting the unique challenges they face.

• The theme of IDWIP 2025 is “Indigenous Peoples and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Defending Rights, Shaping Futures”.

Background Overview:
UN Declaration – 1st Decade: In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/49/214, declaring 9th August of each year during the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995–2004) as the IDWIP.
UN Declaration – 2nd Decade: On 22nd December 2004, the UNGA adopted Resolution A/RES/59/174, proclaiming a second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People from 1st January 2005 to December 2014.
First Observance: The first-ever International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed on 9th August 1995.

World Sanskrit Day 2025 – August 9

World Sanskrit Day, also known as International Sanskrit Day/Sanskrit Diwas/Vishva Samskrita Dinam, is annually observed across the globe on Shravana Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana (Sawan) to promote Sanskrit, one of India’s oldest languages.

• World Sanskrit Day 2025 was observed on August 9 2025.
• World Sanskrit Day 2024 was observed on 19th August 2024 and World Sanskrit Day 2026 will be observed on 28 August 2026.
• Sanskrit Week 2025 will be observed from 6 to 12 August 2025.

Background: 

Government Initiative: In 1969, the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI), directed that Sanskrit Diwas be celebrated at both central and state levels across India.
1st Observance: World Sanskrit Day was first celebrated in 1969 by GoI.
Commemoration: The day marks the birth anniversary of Panini, the renowned Sanskrit scholar and grammarian.
Ancient Origin: Sanskrit is among the world’s oldest languages and is regarded as the “Mother of All Languages” as well as the “Language of the Gods.”
Classical Status: In 2005, the GoI declared Sanskrit as a Classical Language of India and included it in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which lists 22 languages.

STATE NEWS

Chhattisgarh Government Inks Agreement with NHPC for 1,800 MW PSP
In August 2025, Government of Chhattisgarh, along with Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL), signed an agreement with NHPC Limited (formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited) to develop two Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) with capacity of 1800 Megawatt (MW).

Two Projects: The two projects include development of a PSP of 800 MW at Hasdeo Bango in Korba district worth Rs.3,417 crores, and a PSP of 1000 MW in Kurund district, with an estimated investment of Rs.6,000 crores.
Pumped Storage: The Pumped Storage systems also called Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH), stores energy in the form of elevated water. During the off-peak hours, the surplus power from Renewable Energy (RE)-based plants is used to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir.

• During peak hours, the water is released from the upper reservoir, flows through turbines, generating electricity.
