Union MoS George Kurian Launches Project ‘Matsya Shakti’ in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

In August 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) George Kurian, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAH&D), Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA), launched “Matsya Shakti” project for a period of one year, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with an aim to empower minority fisherman communities.

  • The project is implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) scheme.

Project Matsya Shakti:
Implementation: During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between MoMA and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) to implement the scheme through its Vizhinjam Regional Centre, Vizhinjam (Kerala).
Training: The project is a multi-phased one year training programme, focusing on training 690 candidates from the minority communities, to equip and enhance domain knowledge and entrepreneurial capabilities.
Skill Development:Out of the 690 candidates, 270 will be trained in non-traditional fisheries-based skills, including 90 in Fish Hatchery Production and 180 in Basics of Cage Culture Fish Farming.

  • Additionally, 420 women will undergo leadership and entrepreneurship development programmes, enabling them to establish and manage their own enterprises.
  • Every candidate will receive stipends during the training programme

DoP Signs MoU with MapmyIndia to Enhance to Enhance DIGIPIN Services
On August 29, 2025, Department of Posts (DoP) or India Post under the Ministry of Communications, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MapmyIndiaMappls, a provider of location technology, Internet of Things (IoT), and geospatial solutions, at an event held at Dak Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.

Exam Hints:

  • Purpose: To integrate Mappls with the DIGIPIN system
  • DIGIPIN: 10-character alphanumeric code

About DoP–MapmyIndia MoU:
Aim: The MoU aims to utilize Mappls, the mapping platform of MapmyIndia, and products to support the development and implementation of Digital Post Index Number (DIGIPIN).
Integration: As per the MoU, MapmyIndia will provide base maps for integration into the Know Your DIGIPIN Application(app), enhancing visibility for users and accuracy in generation of DIGIPINs based on geographical location.

  • The Mappls application will be integrated with DIGIPIN functionalities, providing users with the ability to locate and access destinations through DIGIPIN.
  • MapmyIndia will facilitate the allocation of DIGIPINs to the existing addresses in its database, enhancing location-based services.

DIGIPIN: It is a digital addressing system, developed by the DoP, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad(Telangana) and National Remote Sensing Centre- Indian Space Research Organization (NRSC-ISRO).

  • India is divided into small grid squares (approximately 3.8 x 3.8 metres(m) each), assigned with a 10-character alphanumeric code known as DIGIPIN.

IHMCL Signs Agreement with ICICI Bank to implement India’s First MLFF Tolling System
Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), signed an agreement with ICICI Bank in August 2025 to implement India’s first comprehensive Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system.

  • The pilot project will be launched at the Choryasi Fee Plaza on National Highway-48 (NH-48) in Gujarat.
  • This cutting-edge system enables seamless, barrier-free electronic toll collection for highway users, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll booths and significantly reducing congestion and travel time.

MLFF: The Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) is an advanced Electronic Tolling System (ETC), enabling transactions through reading of FASTag and Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) by High performance Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Readers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras.
Benefits of MLFF Tolling:
Seamless Toll Collection: Vehicles do not need to stop, significantly reducing delays and enhancing travel efficiency.
Reduced Congestion and Pollution: Eliminates queues and idling, contributing to lower vehicular emissions on highways.
User Convenience: Supports multiple digital payment modes ensuring hassle-free, contactless toll payment.
Scalable Technology: Designed for future nationwide rollout across highways for uniform tolling experience.

IIT-H Signed Pact with IA’s SDD under ARTRAC to Setup CoE ‘VIGRAHA’
In August 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Army (IA)’s Simulator Development Division (SDD) under the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) based in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh (HP), to set up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) called VIGRAHA (Virtual, Intelligent, Ground-breaking Research in Augmented Reality (AR)/ Virtual Reality (VR) and High-tech Applications for the Indian Army).

  • The MoU was signed in the presence of Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IIT-H, and other senior officials from SDD, at IIT-H campus in Hyderabad, Telangana.

Key Programmes: The CoE will initiate joints academic programs, Research & Development (R&D) projects, and capacity building exercises.

  • As per the MoU, the CoE will also launch training and certification programmes in emerging technologies and internship opportunities for students of IIT-H at the IA’s SDD in Secunderabad, Telangana.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Imposes Rs.44.70 Lakh Monetary Penalty on Bandhan Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs.44.70 lakh on Bandhan Bank Limited in August 2025 due to non-compliance with certain statutory and regulatory directions issued by RBI. The penalty was imposed following a supervisory inspection conducted with reference to the bank’s financial position as of March 31, 2024.

  • The penalty was imposed under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, section 10(1)(b)(ii).RBI clarified that this action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to affect the validity of any transactions or agreements with customers.

NSO’s Quarterly Estimates: India’s GDP Grew 5-Quarter High of 7.8% in Q1FY26In August 2025, the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Quarterly Estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the April-June (Q1) of Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26) along with its Expenditure components both at Constant (2011-12) and Current Prices.

  • As per the NSO’s latest data, India’s Real GDP is estimated at 7.8% in Q1FY26, registering a 5-Quarter high growth rate. Also, this growth rate is higher than 6.5% recorded in Q1FY25.
  • This GDP growth rate further consolidates India’s position as the world’s fastest growing large economy amid global headwinds, especially the 50% tariff imposed by the United States of America (USA).
  • This latest GDP estimate surpasses the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s projection of 6.5% for Q1FY26.

Key Estimates:
Real GDP: Real GDP or GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices, is estimated at Rs 47.89 lakh crore inQ1FY26 compared to Rs 44.42 lakh crore registered in Q1FY25, reflecting an increase of 7.8%.
Real GVA: It registered a 6-quarter high growth of 7.6% (in Q1FY26). It is estimated at Rs 44.64 lakh crore in Q1FY26, against Rs 41.47 lakh crore in Q1FY25.
Government Final Consumption Expenditure (GFCE): It rebounded in Q1FY26, registering an increase of 7.4% over a contraction of (-1.8%) in Q4FY25 and 0.3% in Q1 of last FY.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF): It is an indicator for investor demand, has increased by 7.8% in Q1FY26, down from 9.4% in Q4FY25; but higher than 6.7% in Q1FY25.

Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar Featured in 2025 TIME100 AI List of the World’s Most Influential People in AIOn 28 August 2025, New York (the United States of America, USA)-based TIME, a 102-year-old global media brand, released its third annual TIME100 AI list, recognising the 100 most influential individuals in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape around the world. The list highlights Innovators, Leaders, Shapers, and Thinkers shaping AI’s future.

  • Indian-origin Ravi Kumar Singisetti, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation, a Teaneck, New Jersey (USA)-based Information Technology (IT) Company, has been named to the 2025 TIME 100 AI list (under Leaders).

Note: The TIME100 AI list was first launched in 2023, following the global recognition of AI after OpenAI released Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT).
About Ravi Kumar Singisetti: Ravi Kumar Singisetti was appointed CEO of Cognizant in January 2023 and joined the board of directors for the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) in 2024.

Thailand’s Cabinet Appointed Phumtham Wechayachai as Acting PM
In August 2025, Thailand’s cabinet has appointed incumbent Deputy Prime Minister (Dy-PM) Phumtham Wechayachai to serve as acting PM of the country.

  • The newly appointed Acting PM Wechayachai and caretaker cabinet will continue to hold this post until a new government is formed as early as 1st week of September 2025.

In August 2025, Tata Steel Limited (TSL) has acquired over 300 crore equity shares worth Rs 3,104 crore in its subsidiary, T Steel Holdings Pte Ltd (TSHPL).

  • Following this acquisition, TSHPL will continue to be a wholly-owned foreign subsidiary of Tata Steel.

India Clinches 2025 SAFF U17 Women’s Championship Title in Nepal
On August 29, 2025, India won the 7th edition of South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U17 Women’s Championship title, a football tournament, defeating Nepal for 5-0 at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Nepal.

  • In December 2024, the UNGA adopted a resolution launching the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034) under the theme “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development,” focusing on their rights and contributions.

Permanent Forum on People of African Descent: On 2 August 2021, the UNGA adopted resolution A/RES/75/314, officially establishing the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.

On August 29, 2025, the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON), a Public Sector Enterprise(PSE) owned by the Government of Kerala, signed an agreement with Zimbabwe to supply its products and services at an event held at Kochi, Kerala.

  • The MoU was signed by P Rajeev, Minister of Industries, Kerala, and Rajesh Kumar Indukant Modi, Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Zimbabwe.
