On 27th November, 2020 in the occasion of 11th National Organ Donation Day celebration at Jaipur, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot inaugurated virtually the first of its kind “Organ Donor Memorial” in the country.
key points:-
i.The organ donor memorial has been built near SMS Hospital by the Mohan Foundation Jaipur Citizens Forum and the Jaipur Municipal Corporation.
ii.The memorial is inspired by the famous Jantar Mantar of Jaipur and it was designed by Sameer Wheaton.
iii.The first organ donation in the state was done by 6-year-old Mohit from the Alwar district in 2015. Since then, 38 families have come forward to donate organs of their kin who have been declared brain dead.
iv.The organ donors’ memorial will keep encouraging people on the theme of ‘ek khamoshi-anek muskaan, aaokarein angdaan’, for organ donation,”
Recognized online portal in India:
People willing to donate their organs can donate their organs through three Government recognised online portals,
- National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO)
- Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO)
- Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO)
Family Members of the deceased person can also give assent for organ donation.
Pandemic and Organ Donation:
In the Prevailing COVID-19 pandemic led lockdown, organ donation rate has dropped by 70% in India whereas there is a sharp increase in the number of potential recipients of Lungs.

World Organ Donation Day is observed annually on August 13 to motivate people to donate organs after death and to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation, organised in India by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
