The Chief Justice of India(CJI) Dhananjay Yeshwant(DY) Chandrachud has been felicitated with the ‘2022 Center on the Legal Profession(CLP) Award for Global Leadership’ by The Harvard Law School Center of Harvard University, Massachusetts, United States of America(USA).
- He was announced as the recipient of the award in December 2022.
- He was awarded in recognition of his lifetime service to the legal profession in India and around the world.
About the award:
i.The Center on the Legal Profession Award for Global Leadership is the highest professional distinction of Harvard Law School.
ii.Dana Remus who is the Former White House Counsel is announced as the recipient of the award for the year 2023.
About D Y Chandrachud:
i.D Y Chandrachud was appointed as 50th CJI in 2022 with a tenure of 2years(till November 2024).
ii.Prior to be appointed as CJI, he was serving as a Judge of the Supreme Court(SC) of India (from 2016).
iii.From 2013 to 2016 he was Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
iv.He was Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 to 2000; In 2000, he was appointed as a Judge in Mumbai High Court.
v.He is the son of 16th CJI(1978-85) Yeshwant Vishnu(YV) Chandrachud.
About CJI:
i.Article 124(1) of the Constitution of India states that there shall be a Supreme Court of India consisting of a Chief Justice of India.
ii.Article 126 of the constitution deals with the appointment of an acting CJI.
iii.The CJI is appointed by the President of India under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India.
