Chinese Badminton Icon, Lin Dan Announces RetirementOn July 4, 2020 China’s Badminton player and 2 time Olympic Champion, Lin Dan announced his retirement due to his physical capabilities and injuries. He won gold at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics. He was born on October 14, 1983 Longyan, China.

  • As per the Chinese Badminton Association, he had submitted a formal retirement letter a few days ago.

Gist about Lin Dan 

i.He is nicknamed as “Super Dan” by world badminton fans.

ii.He became the 1st and only player to complete the “Super Grand Slam”, having won all nine major titles in the badminton world: Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup, Super Series Masters Finals, All England Open, Asian Games, and Asian Championships.

iii.He became the 1st  men’s singles player to retain the Olympic gold medal by winning in 2008 and defending his title in 2012. He also won a hat-trick of world titles between 2006-09.

iv.In his career span he has won 666 singles matches and lost 128.

Won gold in: Thomas Cup Team Champion (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2018), IBF World Championships(2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013), Sudirman Cup(2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2015). He also won the Malaysian Open in 2017.


The Eddie Choong Player of the Year award for two consecutive years in 2006 and 2007 and BWF Player of the Year 2008 among others.
