China wins Online Nations Cup,India holds fifthOn May 10, 2020, Top seeded and title contender China has won the 1st edition of FIDE Chess.com online Nations Cup 2020 chess tournament took place from 5-10 May 2020, through a chess.com platform.
China’s team, which won the prize money of $48,000, became the champion on the basis of scoring the most points in the league stage despite playing a 2–2 draw against the US (United States) in the final.

Key Points:

i.Partakers: A total of 6 teams take part in this competition which includes Russia, USA, Europe, China, India and a team representing the Rest of the World (RoW).

ii.India’s performance: India finished poor 5th in the six-team event, with players like Viswanathan Anand, Vidit S Gujrathi, P Harikrishna, B Adhiban, Koneru Humpy and D Harika among their teams.

iii.Points scored: China topped the table after 10 rounds with 17 match points (MPs) and 25.5 board points (BPs). The US finished second with 13 match points and 22 board points. Europe took the 3rd place (13 MPs, 21.5 BPs) followed by Russia (8 MPs, 19 BPs) and India (5 MPs, 17.5 BPs), while Rest of the World slipped at the bottom with 4 MPs and 14.5 BPs.

About FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup:

  • Co-organized by FIDE (International Chess Federation) and Chess.com, it is a 6-team double round-robin tournament , where each teams consist of 6 players with 4 playing in each round (3 men and a woman player).
  • Players can get rapid time-control of 25 minutes for the entire game, plus a 10-second increment starting from move one. No draw offers are allowed before move 30. The top 2 after the round-robin will play a Superfinal.
