Highlights of 142nd edition of US Open 2022

The Spanish teen Carlos Alcaraz Garcia defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-4 2-6 7-6(1) 6-3 in the 142nd edition of US Open Championship-2022, Men’s singles final to claim his maiden Grand Slam (GS) title. Alcaraz also became World number 1 in The Pepperstone Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world rankings.

  • The finals took place in the Arthur Ashe Stadium (Hard Court), New York City, New York, United States, from 29th August 2022 to 11th September 2022.
  • Iga Świątek of Poland has defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur to win the women’s singles category.
  • The total prize money for the 2022 US Open is USD 60.1 million. Both men’s singles and women’s singles will be rewarded with USD 2.6 million each.

Carlos Alcaraz Wins His First US Open-2022 Title

Men’s Singles:
Carlos defeated Casper Ruud in the men’s singles finals and marked his name in the record books as the youngest world number 1 in the history of men’s tennis since the ATP rankings began in 1973. He dethroned Daniil Medvedev of Russia to become world no.1.

i.He is the youngest Grand Slam men’s champion since Rafael Nadal at the 2005 French Open, and the youngest US Open champion since Pete Sampras in 1990.

Women’s Singles:
Iga Swiatek (WTA – Women’s Tennis Association’s World No.1) has defeated Ons Jabeur to win her 1st U.S. Open championship and 3rd Grand Slam title overall.

i.She is the 1st top-seeded woman to win the U.S. Open since 23-time major champion Serena Williams in 2014.

ii.She is also the 1st woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to collect two major titles in a single season.

iii.Ons Jabeur (WTA World No.2) becomes the first African and Arab woman ever to reach a US Open final.

Men’s doubles:
America’s Rajeev Ram and Britain’s Joe Salisbury became the second pair to retain the US Open Men’s doubles title by defeating the duo Wesley Koolhof (Dutch) and Neal Skupski (Britain).

i.Toddwoodbridge and Mark Woodforde were the first pair to retain the US Open Men’s doubles title in 1995-96.

Women’s doubles:
Czech duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova have won the women’s doubles title at the 2022 US Open. This is their 1st US Open title, where they defeated Caty McNally andTaylor Townsend.

i.Also they have completed the set with 6 GS titles for the year by winning two Roland Garros titles (2018 and 2021), two Wimbledon titles (2018 and 2022) and an Australian Open title (2022) along with US Open title (2022).

Mixed doubles:
Storm Sanders and John Peers defeated the duo of Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens and France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the mixed doubles finals.

i.With this they have become the 1st Australian duo in 21 years to claim the US Open mixed doubles title in 21 years.

Serena Williams Retires:-

  • An American women tennis player Serena Williams announced her retirement from Tennis after the 2022 US Open, one of the four major tennis championships.
  • She was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association(WTA) for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks.
  • She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles in her career.

i.US Open is the 1st Grand Slam to award equal prize money to men’s and women’s singles champion

  • Pete Sampras (1990), at the age of 19 years and 28 days became the youngest Men’s Singles Champion.
  • Tracy Austin (1979) became the youngest Women’s Singles Champion at the age of 16 years, 8 months and 28 days
  • Ken Rosewall (1970) became the oldest Men’s Singles Champion at the age of 35 years, 10 months and 11 days
  • Flavia Pennetta (2015) became the oldest Women’s Singles Champion at the age of 33 years, 6 months and 18 days.
  • Roger Federer has won the maximum number of US Open titles in the men’s singles category, ie. 5 titles.
