On August 27 2025, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has approved the following proposals:

  • Approved 4 railway projects worth Rs 12,328 crore, including, 3 multi-tracking projects covering 4 states: Bihar, Karnataka, Assam and Telangana; and the construction of new rail line in Kutch, Gujarat.
  • Approved submission of India’s bid for hosting the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030.

Multi-tracking Projects in 3 States & New Rail Line for Kutch:

Approval: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by PM Narendra Modi has approved the 4 projects worth approximately Rs 12,328 crore proposed by the Ministry of Railways (MoR).

Projects: These projects include the expansion of 3 key railway routes across Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar and Assam; and a new rail line in Kutch, Gujarat.

3 Multi-tracking Projects: These 3 new multi-tracking projects are expected to enhance connectivity to nearly 3,108 villages and about 47.34 lakh population and one aspirational district (Kalaburgi) across 3 states, will be benefitted from these projects.

Railway Route 1: Secunderabad (Sanathnagar)-Wadi 3rd and 4th line will span across Karnataka and Telangana.

  • Length: The total length of this rail route is 173 kilometer(km).
  • Outlay: It will be constructed with an investment of Rs 5,012 crore and expected to be completed within 5 years.

Railway Route 2: Bhagalpur-Jamalpur 3rd line will be established in Bihar.

  • Length: The total length of this rail route is 53 km.
  • Outlay: It will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,156 crore and expected to be completed in 3 years.

Railway Route 3: This includes the doubling of Furkating-New Tinsukia rail route in Assam.

  • Length: The total length of this rail route is 194 km.
  • Outlay: It will be constructed with an investment of Rs 3,634 crore and expected to be completed within 4 years.

New Rail Line for Kutch:

Rail Route: The newly approved rail line in Kutch (Gujarat) will connect the Deshalpar–Hajipir–Luna and Vayor–Lakhpat routes, adding 145 km and 164 km of track respectively to Gujarat’s railway network.

Outlay: This new rail line will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2,526 crore and expected to be completed within 3 years.

Benefits: Other promoting tourism in the state, this new rail line will help in transportation of salt, cement, coal, clinker & bentonite.

  • Also, it will connect Harappan site Dholavira, Koteshwar temple, Narayan Sarovar and Lakhpat fort as 13 new railway stations will be added in this new route, benefitting 866 villages.

Significance: These projects are planned on Prime Minister-Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP), primarily focusing on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultations.

  • These 4 projects cover 13 districts across 4 Indian states, and are expected to increase the existing network of Indian Railways (IR) by nearly 565 kilometre(km).
  • These projects are expected to reduce oil import by 56 crore litres (l) and lower Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission by 360 crore kilogram (kg) which is equivalent to plantation of 14 crore trees.

Submission of India’s bid to Host CWG 2030:

Approval: The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) for submission of India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games (CWG 2030).

HCA: The approval also includes the signing of High Collaboration Agreement (HCA) along with the required guarantees from various ministries, departments, and authorities and sanction of required grant-in-aid to Gujarat government, in case the bid gets accepted.

Proposed Host City: The cabinet has selected Ahmedabad(Gujarat) as the proposed host city for 2030 CWG.

Procedure: The last date for India to submit the bid is August 31, 2025. The final decision regarding the host country for CWG will be taken by Commonwealth Sport at its general assembly at Glasgow (Scotland) in November 2025.

About Commonwealth Games (CWG):

Quadrennial Sports Event: CWG is a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from 72 Commonwealth of Nations.

1st Edition: The 1st CWG was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

India’s Host: India hosted the CWG for the 1st time in 2010 in New Delhi, Delhi.

2026 CWG: The 23rd edition of CWG or CWG 2026 is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 02, 2026.
