According to the Brand Finance Brand Guardianship Index 2023, Mukesh Ambani chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is ranked No 1 among Indians and second globally with Brand Guardianship Index (BGI) score of 81.7.
- Jensen Huang, President and Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of US-based tech leader Nvidia, is ranked No 1 on the Brand Guardianship Index 2023 globally with a BGI Score of 83.
- Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft is ranked 3rd followed by Shantanu Narayen of Adobe (4th) and Sundar Pichai of Google (5th).
The Brand Guardianship Index 2023, ranking of the world’s top 100 CEOs or equivalents, was launched during the event hosted in association with Deloitte during the World Economic Forum(WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
Highlights of the index:
i.6 Indian CEOs or equivalents are featured among the top 100 on the index and 2 of them are among the top 10(Mukesh Ambani (2nd) and Natarajan Chandrasekaran(8th))
ii.6 of the top ten on the ranking are of Indian origin, 4 of whom are Indian-American (Satya Nadella 3rd, Shantanu Narayen 4th, Sundar Pichai 5th, and Punit Renjen, 6th)
iii.The United States of America(USA) is the most represented country on the index with 44 CEOs or equivalents followed by China with 16 CEOs.
iv.Leena Nair, CEO of CHANEL ranked 11th on the list is the highest-ranked female in Brand Guardianship Index 2023. Only 7 out of 100 brand guardians on the 2023 index are female.
v.5 among the top 10 CEOs or equivalents on the 2023 index belongs to the tech and media sector which was around 9 out of 10 in 2022.
vi.Engineering and Finance are the most common sector in the 2023 ranking. Mukesh Ambani is the longest serving CEO in the ranking at 40 years.

i.Brand Guardianship Index is a balanced scorecard of measures that capture the ability of a CEO to act as the guardian of their company’s brand and a steward of long-term shareholder value.
ii.The index includes ‘Equity’ factors, which reflect current perceptions, ‘Performance’ factors, which reflect the tangible results of these perceptions, and ‘Investment’ factors, which support future performance.
- Brand Guardianship Index and the Brand Guardianship Ranking are based on the survey of 1,000 market analysts and journalists – two stakeholder groups, who have informed and influential views on chief executives’ reputations.
Note: Only 50 of the respondents of the survey carried out in November -December 2022 reside in India.
