Indian Weightlifter, Padma Shri Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, has won the 3rd edition of the (British Broadcasting Corporation) BBC Indian Sportswoman Of The Year(ISWOTY) 2021.
The award ceremony was hosted by Tim Davie, Director-General of BBC in New Delhi, Delhi.

i.BBC Lifetime Achievement Award 2021:
Karnam Malleswari, former Indian weightlifter. And the 1st Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics in 2000.
ii.BBC Emerging Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021:
Shafali Verma, the youngest female cricketer who played for India in the Women’s Twenty20(T20) International match in 2019.
About BBC ISWOTY:
i.BBC ISWOTY is the sports award by BBC Hindi in India that celebrates and honours India’s finest sportswomen and it highlights the extraordinary achievements of sportswomen in India.
ii.Five shortlisted nominees of the 3rd edition of BBC ISWOTY were Aditi Ashok(Golfer), Avani Lekhara(Para-shooter); Lovlina Borgohain(Boxer); P V Sindhu(Shuttler); and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu(Weightlifter).
iii.The 3rd edition of BBC ISWOTY recognises and honoured the Olympians and the Paralympians from the Tokyo games including the Indian women’s and men’s hockey teams.

About Saikhom Mirabai Chanu:
i.Saikhom Mirabai Chanu hails from Nongpok Kakching village of Imphal East district in Manipur.
ii.She was the first Indian Weightlifter to win silver at the Olympics and the 2nd Indian Weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.
iii.She won the gold at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, the United States (US) in 2017. She has also won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games.

- The government of India honoured her with Padma Shri for sports in 2018.
