Renowned Indian Hockey player Balbir Singh Senior has been conferred with Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Hockey India Annual Awards, held in New Delhi. The nonagenarian received the trophy along with a cheque of 30 lakh rupees. Balbir Singh Senior represented Indian Team and was among the 16 iconic Olympians during the London Olympics in 1948. Singh’s 1952 record of most goals (five) in an Olympic final still stands the best. Balbir Senior was the first sportsperson to be honored with the Padma Shri Award in 1957. He played a major part in Helsinki Olympics in 1952 and Melbourne Olympics in 1956. A total prize amount of Rs 2.81 crore was distributed at the felicitation ceremony.
