On April 17, 2020 Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced Automatic Mist Based Sanitiser Dispensing Unit & UltraViolet (UV) Sanitisation Box and Hand-held UV device to enhance the operations at public places during the pandemic.Automatic Mist Based Sanitiser Dispensing Unit
i.It is developed by The Centre for Fire Explosive & Environment Safety (CFEES), DRDOÂ laboratories in Delhi with High-Performance Organisation (HPO) 1, by using its expertise in mist technology for fire suppression, the unit is manufactured with the help of Riot Labz Pvt Ltd, Noida.
ii.This is a contactless sanitizer dispenser that sprinkles alcohol-based hand rub sanitizer solution for cleaning hands when entering buildings, office complexes, etc., & is based on water mist aerator technology, developed for water conservation.
iii.5-6 ml sanitiser is released for 12 seconds using an atomiser per operation. It illuminates LED spray.
iv.It is expected to be very useful for entry, the exit of isolation and quarantine centres.
UV Sanitisation Box and Hand-held UV device
i.It is designed & developed by Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS) and Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), DRDO laboratories in Delhi.
ii.It is a UV-C light based sanitisation box and hand held device (UV light with wavelength 254 nanometres-nm), where the UV-C helps to destroy the genetic material in COVID-19. The radiation controls the Ribonucleic Acid(RNA) structure, which prevents the virus particles from making more copies of themselves.
iii.The UV-C box is designed to disinfect personal items such as mobile phones, tablets, etc. COVID-19 virus is deactivated by using UVC lamps in a minute that are placed at an equi-distance in a box with a UV dose of 100 mJ/cm2 (millijoule per square centimeter) & the UV lamps used in the sanitisation box also emits 185 nm.
iv.The handheld device is a 8 watt UV-C lamp which disinfects office and household objects like chairs, files, postal delivered items and food packets with an exposure of 45 seconds at a 100 mJ/cm2 irradiance placed at a distance of less than 2 inches.
