Arunachal Pradesh Records Best Sex Ratio in India: Annual Report from Office of Registrar General & Census Commissioner

Arunachal records best sex ratio, Manipur the worstAccording to Annual Report on ‘Vital Statistics on India based on Civil Registration System 2018’, Arunachal Pradesh recorded the Highest Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) in the country with 1,084 females born per thousand males. It was followed by Nagaland (965) & Mizoram (964), Kerala (963), and Karnataka (957).

The report was released by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

The sex ratio was determined based on the reports provided by Chief Registrar of Births and Death of respective States/Union Territories for the year 2018.

Key Points:

i.Manipur (757), Lakshadweep (839), Daman & Diu (877) recorded the Lowest SRB in the country.

ii.The level of registration of births has increased to 89.3% in 2018 from 81.3% in 2009

iii.13 states/Union Territory (UTs) namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Chandigarh, Delhi and Puducherry recorded 100 % registration of births in 2018.

iv.Out of the total registered births, the share of male and female are 52.0% and 47.9% respectively.

v.13 States/UTs namely which have recorded cent percent registration of births in 2018.

India & Sex Ratio:

i. According to 2011 Census conducted by Government of India the sex ratio of India was 940, which is on the lower side. Biologically normal sex ratio at birth is 1, 050 males to 1, 000 females or 950 females to 1,000 males.

ii.According to the Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2018, India recorded a decline in SRB from 906 in 2011 to 899 in 2018.

Risks of Low SRB:

i.Low SRBs may lead to more violence against both men and women.

ii.It will also lead to an increase in human-trafficking.

Government Initiatives to increase Sex Ratio:

i.Government of India has introduced schemes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao to address the issues of declining Child Sex Ratio image (CSR). It is an initiative run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Education.Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao launched in 2015.

iii.In 1994, Pre-conception & Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC & PNDT) Act, 1994 was enacted to bring a balance in sex ratio.
