Digital Twin Center for Emerging Automotive Systems in Hub and Spoke model 1The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati(Assam) for establishing a Common Engineering Facility Center (CEFC) titled “Digital Twin Center for Emerging Automotive Systems” in the Hub and Spoke model.

  • This CEFC was established under the Capital Goods Scheme Phase II of the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) by ARAI in collaboration with industry partner Micelio Mobility Private Limited.

Note: ARAI, the leading automotive R&D organization in India is an autonomous body under the aegis of the MHI.

About CEFCDigital Twin Center for Emerging Automotive Systems:

The CEFC will enable “Smart Advanced Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation Hub (SAMARTH) Udyog Bharat 4.0,” to benefit the industry, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and startups, by creating digital twins for the different systems across industries.

  • This will support the MSMEs and startups to experiment, experience, upskill and find solutions using this domain for their needs.

Hub and Spoke:

Hub: Pune(Maharashtra)

Spoke1: Bengaluru(Karnataka)

Spoke 2: IIT Guwahati(Assam)

Components:

i.Digitization of data and environment for effective tuning of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI & ML) models

ii.Digitization of data for system development & training

  • Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Farm

iii.Digitization of systems for control development & validation

iv.Digitization of the material development and manufacturing  process

v.Material development and characterization without the need for physical prototyping.

Benefits:

i.These facilities can be utilized across Industries for developing technologies, experimentation, design and simulation, and validation.

ii.The CEFC will also be utilized for the development of new materials, material characterization, and manufacturing process simulation in different areas ranging from Metals, composites, additive manufacturing, etc.

Outcomes:

i.Creation of Digital Twin decreases the overall development time for systems development

ii.Validation of Systems can happen even before the prototype is ready.

iii.Front-loading digitization in the development cycle for different application areas.

iv.Experience Centres for technology absorption, do-it-yourself, handling, and experimenting.

Benefits of the Collaborative organisation:

i.Spoke 2 at IIT Guwahati will serve the needs of the industry in the North-East region in the areas of advanced Digital Twin systems for their indigenous technology developments.

  • These facilities will support the across capital goods like Engineering, Automotive, Drones, Solar, and aerospace among others.

ii.ARAI will also be setting up digital connectivity with the HUB and Spoke 1 for access to AI and ML tools as well as the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) software with Spoke 2 at IIT Guwahati.

Note:

i.IIT Guwahati will give space, infrastructure, and utilities required for the equipment and will in turn get access to the systems for their educational and research activities.

ii.A general-purpose Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) system would be installed at IIT Guwahati to enable digital twin creation for systems development of control systems and validation.

iii.The systems are aimed at creating Synergies between the industry ecosystem (MSME of HUB and Start-Up of Spoke) and the academia through IITs by leveraging the knowledge available at IITs.

SAMARTH Udyog Bharat 4.0

SAMARTH Udyog Bharat 4.0 is an Industry 4.0 initiative of the Ministry of Heavy Industry & Public Enterprises, under its scheme on Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector.

  • It is to facilitate and create an ecosystem for the propagation of an Industry 4.0 set of technologies in every Indian manufacturing by 2025.
