On June 5, 2020 Andhra Pradesh(AP) Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched India’s 1st “online waste management platform” of Andhra Pradesh Environment Management Corporation(APEMC) on the occasion of World Environment Day to ensure 100% safe disposal of industrial toxic wastes. The State Department of Environmental Management, APEMC, will take over responsibility of the online platform.
- Also released the poster APEMC of e-platform highlighting its salient features, of the portal.
i.APEMC has been set up as a government company to handle the industrial waste & will work in coordination with Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board(APPCB) with a strong regulatory framework
- To handle the waste from its generation till the end of its life cycle including sorting & streamlining the waste as hazardous or non-hazardous or e-waste according to category, scientifically disposing of the waste at the disposal centres.
ii.As per the Environmental Rules and Regulations APPCB will make necessary provisions for industries/organizations to hand over the waste generated by their units which cannot be treated within their premises, to APEMC for management of waste
Major Highlights of the platform
i.The platform will comply with the principles of 6 ‘R’s– Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Redesign, Refurbish and Remanufacture.
ii.It ensures proper tracking, scrutiny and audit of the (industrial) waste & encourages the utilization of wastes through co-processing
AP has many industries falling under red and orange categories, which generate significant quantities of liquid waste, hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste and air pollutants.
Note– CM informed that a new legislation, the AP Environment Improvement Act, 2020, will be enacted soon to safeguard the environment
