Adani Data Networks, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, has been granted a unified licence by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, for access services in 6 circles: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Mumbai.
- The Gautam Adani-led company entered the telecom industry after obtaining mm-wave band spectrum and airwaves in the most recent 5G spectrum auction.
Key Points:
i.Adani Data Networks has spent Rs. 212 crore for 400 MHz of spectrum in the 26 GHz band.
- In Gujarat and Mumbai, the company holds 100 MHz of 5G spectrum each, and in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, it has 50 MHz each.
ii.This licence entitles the company to provide internet services and carry long-distance calls across its network.
- The licence would also benefit the company’s data centre operations, which require both domestic and global data transfers.
iii.The company intends to provide private network solutions as well as increased cyber security in airports, ports and logistics, power generation, transmission, distribution, and various manufacturing operations.
India’s First 5G Spectrum Auction: GoI Earns More Than Rs. 1.5 Lakh Crore; Reliance Jio Is the Highest Bidder
The Government of India (GoI) earned a record-breaking Rs. 1,50,173 crores (~Rs 1.5 lakh crore) from India’s first-ever 5G spectrum auction, selling 71% of the total spectrum.
- Of the 72,098 MHz of spectrum offered across 10 bands, 51,236 MHz, or 71%, was sold.
Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (Reliance Jio), owned by Mukesh Ambani, made the highest bid at the spectrum auction, winning a total of 24.7 GHz of spectrum for Rs. 88,078 crore.
Key Highlights of the 5G Spectrum Auctions:
i.Reliance Jio was followed by Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel, which had purchased 19.8 GHz of spectrum for Rs 43,084 crore.
ii.With a total bid of Rs 18,799 crore, Vodafone Idea acquired 6,228 MHz of airwaves.
iii.Adani Data Networks invested Rs 212 crore in auctions to acquire 5G airwaves in the 26 GHz band in Gujarat, Mumbai, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. It should be emphasized that this is not for public networks.
iv.The GoI intends to commence 5G rollout in October 2022.
v.Globally, the next-generation network known as 5G is regarded as crucial for future technologies like self-driving cars and artificial intelligence.
