Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti will take charge as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India after current CEC Nasim Zaidi retires on July 6, 2017. Nasim Zaidi had taken over as the 20th CEC of India on April 19, 2015.
About Achal Kumar Jyoti:
Born on January 23, 1953, Jyoti is an IAS officer of 1975 batch from Gujarat Cadre.
- In the past Achal Kumar Jyoti has served as the Chairman of the Kandla Port Trust between 1999 and 2004 and Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL).
- He also served as the Chief Secretary of Gujarat during Narendra Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
- After retiring as the Chief Secretary of Gujarat in January 2013, he was appointed as the State Vigilance Commissioner of Gujarat.
- He assumed charge as Election Commissioner on May 13, 2015.
- An Election Commissioner or a Chief Election Commissioner has tenure of six years in office or till he or she attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
- As Chief Election Commissioner of India, Jyoti would be overseeing state Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh just before demitting office in January 2018.
