I. Rearrange the following sentences in the proper sequence to form a meaningful paragraph then answer the following questions.

A.While the government may take heart from the higher growth projection, it must pay equal heed to Mr. Patel’s plains peak on some issues.
B.Third, while banks have reduced lending rates, the RBI has pointed out there is room for more cuts if rates on small savings schemes are corrected.
C.First, the need to urgently resolve the surge of bad loans on bank books, for which the RBI will unveil a new Prompt Corrective Action framework by the middle of this month.
D.Second, the RBI has reminded the government there will be “clearly more demand for capital” in the coming days.
E.The RBI is quite optimistic about an uptick in the economy this year, projecting 7.4% growth in Gross Value-Added, compared to 6.7% in 2016-17.
F.Without this, a virtuous cycle of healthy credit growth necessary for private investment and job creation will remain elusive.
G.The government’s allocation of Rs.10,000 crore to recapitalise public sector banks is obviously inadequate.

Explanation:

Hint 1 : ‘the higher growth projection’ in A refers to the projection given in E – 7.4% growth, hence the pair EA.

Hint 2: A ends with ‘some issues’, these issues are discussed in B, C and D. C should obviously come after A, hence AC

Hint 3: D says ‘more demand for capital’; this more demand has been shown in G, hence the pair DG.

EAC is fixed, DG  is fixed too. Now, we have to focus on F ( a bit of daily reading of newspaper – esp economy section –  will go a long way in helping find a place for F). ‘Without this’ – may refer to the point discussed in C or it may refer to the point discussed in B. While an economics student will know that B and F are not related in any way, even one with non – economics background can gauge that main focus of B is on reduction of rates for small savings schemes; whereas C talks of bad loans, and its consequences on economy has been explained in F, hence the pair CF. B will obviously come in the last because it is the third point. Using this analogy, we arrive at our answer.

II. Rearrange the following sentences in the proper sequence to form a meaningful paragraph then answer the following questions.

A.But that it took the government seven years to implement the BS IV standards across the country holds lessons for policymakers.
B.A Supreme Court directive on Wednesday imposed a ban on the sale of the more polluting BS III vehicles from April 1.
C.One of them being the cost incurred by refineries to make transition to BS IV compliant fuel
D.Auto industry too had to incur an expenditure of Rs 50,000 crore
E.The order clears the path for the adoption of BS IV standards (from BS III) throughout the country, seven years after they were put in place.
F.For a country battling serious pollution problems, this will be a significant transition.


Answer: BEFACD

Explanation:

Hint 1: F – ‘this will be a transition’, which transition is the author talking of? To whom does ‘this’ refer to? The transition has been given in E – from III to IV, hence we get our first pair EF.

Hint 2: ‘The order’ in E(remember use of article explained in Part II) refers to the Supreme Court directive in B, hence the pair BE.

Hint 3: ‘But’ (joins opposite and contrasting sentences) in A talks in a negative way about India (it took seven years; holds lessons etc), so we need a sentence before A which talks in a positive way about India, only F qualifies, hence the pair FA

Hint 4: C uses pronoun ‘them’. The only plural noun to which ‘them’ could refer is ‘lessons’ in A, so we get our pair AC.

Hint 5: C talks of cost incurred by refineries; D builds on it by talking about cost incurred by auto industry, hence CD. Pair CD can also be gauged with the use of positive connector ‘too’ in D.

Using this analogy and combining the different pairs, we can arrive at our answer BEFACD. Not all the hints are necessary to arrive at the answer. With only 3 hints , this PJ could be solved
