Nobel Laureate Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan to head Royal Society in UK

India-born Nobel Prize Winner Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has been confirmed as the President elect of United Kingdom’s highly esteemed Royal Society.  Venkatraman will assume the post on December 1, 2015. He will be the first Indian-origin scientist to hold the post. Ramakrishnan will replace Famous Geneticist Sir Paul Nurse, who is also a Nobel laureate.

 

Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

  • He is famously known as Venki. He was born in Chidambaram in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.
  • He holds B.Sc. degree in Physics from Baroda University and Ph.D. from Ohio University, United States.
  • In 2003, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
  • Ramakrishnan was knighted for his services to Molecular Biology in 2012.
  • Awards – In 2009, Ramakrishnan was conferred with Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the precise structure of Ribosomes i.e. the molecular machines that manufacture proteins inside all living cells. He shared this Prize with Tom Steitz and Ada Yonath.
  • He was awarded with Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine (2007) and Padma Vibhushan (2010).
  • He is currently working as Deputy Director of the British Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Cambridge University.

Royal Society of Britain

  • It was founded in November 1660 and was granted a Royal Charter by King Charles II as “The Royal Society
  • Royal Society is possibly the oldest science society still in existence.
  • The Society acts as the United Kingdom’s Academy of Sciences, and funds research fellowships and scientific start-up companies.
