India ranks 55th position in Global Hunger Index 2014 in a report prepared by the International Food Policy Research Institute and NGOs Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide. India ranks better than Pakistan (ranked 57) and Bangladesh (57), but trails behind Nepal (44) and Sri Lanka (39).
According to the report India is no longer in the “alarming” category, but still India’s hunger status is classified as “serious”.
Overall, the whole of South Asia has made progress in reducing hunger levels, mainly through a decline of almost 9 percentage points in underweight children. India has 40% of World’s malnourished children under 5 years of age.
Hunger Statistics
- Some 805 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That’s about one in nine people on earth.
- Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five – 3.1 million children each year.
- One out of six children — roughly 100 million — in developing countries is underweight.
- Â One in four of the world’s children are stunted. In developing countries the proportion can rise to one in three.
- Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence (percentage of population) of hunger. One person in four there is undernourished.
