World Cancer Day is observed on February 4 every year since 2008 to raise awareness of cancer among the people and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control. The theme for 2015 World Cancer Day is Not Beyond Us.

- What is Cancer? – Cancer is nothing but a disease which is characterized by uncontrolled multiplication of cells. In our body cells form, they divide, and after some point of time they die. It is a cycle. Technically it is called Apoptosis – Programmed Cell Death. When the cycle breaks, cancer begins to form. This cancer cells do not undergo Apoptosis. Rather they grow continuously and divide in an uncontrollable manner.
- It is estimated that there will be 1.5 lakhs of new cases of breast cancer in the year 2015 and about more than seventy five thousand women in India are expected to die of the disease.
- The cancers that frequently affect men are prostate, colon, lung, and skin cancers.
- Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of cancer in the world. It is responsible for 22% of cancer deaths.
- In India, Cancer is the second biggest cause of death, growing at 11% annually.
