World Malaria Day is being observed on April 25 every year
Aim: To spread the awareness of Malaria and explains that is preventable and curable.
Theme for the year: End Malaria for Good
Various programmes are being organised across the world to mark the day
21 Nations could be Malaria free by 2020 – World Health Organisation reported
World Health Organisation reported that 21 nations including Six African region and four of India’s Neighbouring countries: Bhutan, China, Nepal and Malaysia could be free from Malaria by the year 2020 and the same published on World Malaria Day.
WHO’s 2016-2030 Programme – Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030
Goals: To alleviate the Malaria in atleast 10 countries by 2020 and achieve the target, a country must target atleast one year of zero indigenous case.
- The Programme was approved by World Health Assembly in 2015 that is working towards alleviation of local transmission of Malaria in atleast 10 nations by 2020
WHO Reports
21 countries such as Algeria, Belize, Bhutan, Botswana, Caboverde, China, Comoros, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Iran, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Paraguay, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Suriname, Swaziland and Timor-Leste where the WHO estimated to achieve the goals to lessen the burden of the disease is heaviest.
- Half of the world’s population remains at risk of Malaria and in 2015, 214 new cases were reported in 95 countries and more than 400 000 people died of Malaria
- Global Technical Strategy would require global and domestic funding $2.5 billion in 2016 to estimated $8.7 billion annually by 2030.
Indian Council of Medical Research joint venture with Sun Pharma for research in preventive health
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Mumbai based Sun Pharma have joined into an agreement for research and innovation in preventive health
