President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Election Commissioner Hari Shankar Brahma as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, as the current CEC V S Sampath is getting retired on January 15, 2014. Brahma was 1975-batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre and he hails from Assam.Â
H S Brahma has become the second person from North-East India to be appointed to this post after J M Lyndogh.
