Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Gujarat and Maharashtra on September 08, 2026, where he inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stones for several development projects worth over Rs 35,000 crore in Vadodara, Gujarat, and inaugurated the 7th edition of Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Key Highlights of Visit:
Visit to Vadodara: During his visit, PM Modi virtually inaugurated the last 3 sections Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT)in Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) with Dadri in Uttar Pradesh (UP), which marks the completion of the project.
- 3 Sections: The WDFC, developed at a cost of over Rs 20,700 crore, comprises 3 sections between Maharashtra and Gujarat: New Sanand (N)-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, New Saphale-New JNPT, covering 326 route Kilometres (kms).
- Flagged off Freight Trains: In addition, PM Modi flagged off freight train services from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon and New JNPT, Mumbai, and a new train service between Vadodara(Gujarat) and Tanda Road, which is expected to benefit the people of Vadodara, Chhota Udepur (Gujarat)and Alirajpur districts (Madhya Pradesh, MP)
- 3 Railway Projects: He also laid the foundation stone for 3 railway projects, estimated to be developed at a cost of Rs 9,700 crore, spanning 329 kms, include the Vadodara-Ratlam third and fourth lines, Miyagam Karjan-Choranda–Malsar gauge conversion and the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi doubling project.
- 3 National Highway (NH Projects): In addition, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for three NH projects with estimated cost of around Rs 1,780 crore, including six-laning of the Kamrej-Chalthan section of NH-48; construction of additional structures, including major bridges over the Tapi and Narmada rivers, on the Vadodara-Surat section of NH-48; and grade-separated structures at Abhava, Mindhola and Khajod junctions on NH-53.
Visit to Mumbai: During his visit to Mumbai (Maharashtra), PM inaugurated the 7th edition of Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026, held till September 11 2026.
- Theme: The 4-day long event was held under the theme of “Potential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum – Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance.”
Union Minister Annapurna Devi Launched 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026
In September 2026, Union Minister Annapurna Devi, Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) launched the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah, a month-long nationwide campaign to strengthen nutrition awareness, community participation and delivery of nutrition services at the grassroots level, at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
About 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026:
Theme: The Central theme of this year’s campaign, being observed from September 9 to October 8, 2026, is “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari”, calling upon every citizen to take shared ownership of Anganwadi centres.
Five Key Themes: Poshan Maah 2026 will focus on dietary diversity and adequate protein, fresh hot cooked meals, community ownership and accountability, nutrition with early childhood development.
10 years of PMMVY: The campaign marks 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) with a 100% saturation drive to enrol eligible pregnant and lactating women and expedite Direct Benefit Transfers.
CCEA Approves 8 Projects of MoR Worth Rs 20,804 Cr Across 9 States
On September 9 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved eight railway multitracking projects of Ministry of Railways(MoR) worth Rs 20,804 crore (Cr) covering 31 districts across nine states in the country.
Project Details:
Five multitracking projects Details:The CCEA approved five projects of the MoR with a total cost of Rs 10,021 Cr.
- The five projects cover 17 districts across Tamil Nadu (TN), Andhra Pradesh (AP), Karnataka and Telangana enhancing connectivity to 2,121 villages, with a total population of about 52 lakh.
Three multitracking projects Details:The CCEA approved 3 projects with a total cost of Rs 10,783 Cr.
- The Three projects covering 14 Districts across the states of West Bengal (WB), Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Chhattisgarh, will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 656 Kms.
Karnataka Leading ChipIN Centre with 73 Tape-Outs : MeitY
In September 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officially released a dataset highlighting Karnataka as the leading state in semiconductor support under the ChipIN Centre initiative, with 81 organisations, 73 chip tape-outs, and 88 lakh hours of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool usage.
Key Findings:
Top 5: Following Karnataka, Tamil Nadu (TN) recorded 79 organisations and 33 tape-outs, Telangana 42 organisations and 28 tape-outs, Maharashtra 32 organisations, 24 tape-outs and 15 lakh EDA tool-use hours, and Uttar Pradesh (UP) 24 organisations and 21 tape-outs.
Other States: Other contributing states include Madhya Pradesh (MP) (24 organisations, 18 tape-outs), Kerala, West Bengal (WB), Odisha, and Punjab, showing broad-based participation across India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
ChipIN Centre initiative: Launched by MeitY on 24 February 2023, established at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) as a centralized national hub, supports semiconductor design activities by providing infrastructure, tools, and technical expertise across Indian states to strengthen domestic chip development capacity.
Ministry of Coal Launches First Sector-Specific CSR Framework for Indian Coal Companies
In September 2026, the Ministry of Coal in collaboration with Coal India Limited (CIL), launched the Comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Framework for Indian Coal Companies during an event in New Delhi, Delhi, marking the first such initiative since the Companies Act, 2013.

About QPR Portal:
Aim: It is a technology-enabled platform, developed to be used by all Central Ministries, Departments and Organisations (MDOs) to enhance the identification, cataloguing, standardisation and quality of datasets, promoting data-driven governance and evidence-based policymaking.
Data Standardisation: It tracks adoption of national and international standards, classifications and common unique identifiers in machine-readable datasets and quality checks under the Statistical Quality Assurance Framework (SQAF).
Key Features: Some of the key features of the new portal are: automated validation, dashboards, cross-verification with the National Metadata Structures (NMDS) web portal, providing analytical insights across MDOs.
MAHE Among Three Indian Host Institutions for US-India TRUST Fellowship 2026-27
In September 2026, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence (IoE) Deemed to be University, selected as one of the 3 Indian host institutions for the United States (US)-India Fellowship for 2026-27.
- The fellowship was formally launched by Sergio Gor, the United States of America (USA)Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, at a special ceremony held in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
About US-India Fellowship:
Aim: It is a structured 12-month programme that aims to strengthen scientific and technological collaboration between India and the United States of America (USA).
Focus Areas: The key focus areas of the fellowship will be: Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum computing, semiconductors, biotechnology, energy, defence and space technologies.
Other Indian Host Institutions: Apart from MAHE, other two Indian host institutions selected for the fellowship are: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) (in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, TN) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru (Bengaluru, Karnataka).
Fellowship Support: Selected fellows receive a USD 1,650 monthly stipend, along with housing and meals, medical insurance, round-trip economy airfare between the U.S. and India, and visa and logistical support.
Facilitators: The US Consulate General in Chennai (TN), MAHE, IIT-M and IISc Bengaluru will act as facilitator for the programme.
- The programme will receive philanthropic support from the founding sponsors such as Pratiksha Trust and Mazumdar Shaw.
NIT Rourkela, ISRO-NRSC, Tea Board India Sign MoU for CHAYANKAN AI-Based Tea Monitoring Project
In August 2026, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, Odisha, Signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and Tea Board of India (TBI) for ‘Project CHAYANKAN (Comprehensive AI-based Geospatial Data Analytics for Tea Plantation Monitoring)’, in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB).
About CHAYANKAN Project:
Objective: It is a three-year (April 2026 – March 2029) Advanced Research and Development(R&D) project aimed at developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based geospatial system for tea plantation mapping, yield estimation, crop-health assessment, and pest and disease forecasting.
Technology: The project integrates satellite imagery, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral data, and ground observations using machine learning models to assess plantation health, productivity, and stress conditions through geospatial analytics and remote sensing.
Features: Key features include automated mapping of tea plantations, detection of biotic and abiotic stress, yield prediction, and forecasting of pest and disease outbreaks using data-driven models.
About TBI: It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), established on 1 April 1954 under the Tea Act, 1953.

- Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has joined the initiative as one of the first merchant partners, enabling Indian tourists to make payments using UPI-enabled applications.
India–Singapore UPI Payment Linkage:

Key Details:
Funding: During the event, Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ONGC, announced a Rs 2,000 crore Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) for deep-tech energy startups.
Initial: During the initial phase of the program, up to 30 high-potential early-stage startups will receive maximum Rs 50 lakh each in convertible funding and maximum 1.5 crore in milestone-based funding, amounting to potential support of up to Rs 2 crore each startup.
Areas of Collaboration: As part of the programme, ONGC will work jointly with IIT-B and SINE across seven energy innovation areas: Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven Subsurface Intelligence; drilling technologies; hydrogen and mobility; bioenergy with focus on Compressed Biogas (CBG); refinery technologies; and digital asset management; and other innovations relevant to the energy sector.

JSW Group and Volkswagen Group Sign MoU for Passenger Vehicles in India
In September 2026, JSW Group and Volkswagen Group (through Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, SAVWIPL) signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a proposed 51:49 joint venture (JV) for Volkswagen’s passenger vehicle operations in India, with a binding agreement expected to be finalised by December 2026.

Union MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh Launches Indigenous ‘ORV Sagar Manthan’ under Deep Ocean Mission
In September 2026, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), virtually launched India’s first advanced Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Manthan (Yard 3041) at Rishi Bankim Shipyard, Kolkata, West Bengal (WB), built at an approximate cost of Rs. 840 crore.
- Following naval maritime traditions, the vessel was named by Manju Singh, wife of Dr. Jitendra Singh, and launched into the water by Kavita Ellanti, wife of Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, Secretary, MoES.
About ORV Sagar Manthan:
Development: The state-of-the-art vessel has been designed, engineered and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) under the MoES.
- The vessel will gradually replace the 43-year-old ORV Sagar Kanya, which was procured from Germany in 1983.
Construction: Constructed under Vertical-4 (Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration) of the government’s flagship Deep Ocean Mission (DOM), the vessel is an all-weather, multidisciplinary platform with a projected service life of 30 years.
Timeline: The construction of ORV Sagar Manthan began with contract signing in July 2024, and the vessel is scheduled for delivery and commissioning in 2028.
Akasa Air Operates First Commercial Flight with 1% SAF Blend from BPCL
In September 2026, Akasa Air successfully operated its first commercial flight using conventional Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) blended with 1% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supplied by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
Highlights of Akasa Air’s First SAF-Blended Commercial Flight:
Route: The flight departed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (Maharashtra) and arrived at Manohar International Airport, Goa, marking a step towards the adoption of sustainable fuels and aviation decarbonisation in India.
Partnership: The initiative follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Akasa Air and BPCL in July 2026 to explore SAF adoption and establish a framework for the supply and offtake of SAF-blended ATF at designated airports across India.

- The year 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the proclamation of International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966.
- 2026 Theme: “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity”
Background:
Origin: The idea of celebrating ILD was first proposed during the inaugural World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy, held in Tehran, Iran in 1965.
- The Congress suggested 8 September, the opening day of the Congress, as ILD.
Adoption: In 1966, the UNESCO General Conference at its 14th session in Paris, France, officially proclaimed 8 September of every year as ILD.
First Observance: The first ILD was celebrated on 8 September 1967.
2026 Event: UNESCO and the Government of Mexico jointly hosted the global celebration of ILD on 8–9 September 2026 in Chiapas, Mexico.
International Day to Protect Education from Attack 2026 – 9 September
The United Nations (UN) observes 9 September every year across the world as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack to raise awareness about the need to protect students, teachers, schools, and educational institutions in conflict-affected areas.
- 2026 Theme: “Can Education Survive Attack? The Resilience of Human Communities.”
Background:
Establishment: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated 9 September as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack through Resolution A/RES/74/275, adopted on 28 May 2020.
- The resolution was introduced by Qatar and co-sponsored by 62 countries.
First Observance: The day was observed for the first time on 9 September 2020.

Bihar Partners with UAE’s AIM Global Foundation to Set Up Food Processing Park
In September 2026, the Industries Department of Bihar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Arab Emirates(UAE) based AIM Global Foundation to set up a dedicated food processing park in Bihar, in Dubai, UAE.
Bihar Agro-Food Processing MoU:
Objective: The initiative aims to develop an integrated agro-food and processing cluster to attract investments from the UAE and Gulf region and strengthen Bihar’s role in global food supply chains.
Key Roles: Bihar will facilitate land, infrastructure, Single Window support and policy incentives, while AIM Global Foundation will mobilise UAE-based investors and companies for food processing and allied sectors.
