Chhattisgarh Ranked First in MoJS’s Initiative ‘JSJB 3.0’ under Catch the Rain Campaign 
In September 2026, Chhattisgarh has secured the first position nationally in the third phase of the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB 3.0) initiative, a community-driven water conservation programme under the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s(MoJS) Catch the Rain campaign.

  • Chief Minister (CM) of Chhattisgarh Vishnu Deo Sai presented the state’s model at a national summit in New Delhi, Delhi, in the presence of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

About Chhattisgarh’s Water Conservation Achievement:
Overview: Chhattisgarh completed 77,719 out of 79,775 registered water conservation structures and improved from second position in earlier phases.
Phases: Chhattisgarh ranked second in JSJB 1.0 with 4,05,561 structures and in JSJB 2.0 with 23,07,768 completed out of 24,07,456 initiated, before securing first position nationally in JSJB 3.0.
Districts: Five districts of Chhattisgarh ‘Surajpur, Mahasamund, Balod, Balodabazar-Bhatapara, and Kabirdham’ featured among India’s top 10, demonstrating decentralized implementation.
Innovation: The ‘5 Per Cent Model’ from Koriya district promotes voluntary allocation of five per cent of agricultural land for groundwater recharge infrastructure through coordinated local participation.
Target: The Government of India (GoI) aims to create 2 crore new water conservation structures by May 31, 2027, with Chhattisgarh contributing significantly.

IIT Madras & UNESCO MGIEP Partner to Develop AI-Based Immersive Learning Tools 
In September 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (UNESCO MGIEP) to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based immersive learning technologies aimed at transforming global education systems.
Highlights of the Partnership:
Dignitaries:  Agreement signed in the presence of Obijiofor Aginam (Director of UNESCO MGIEP), Manu Santhanam (IIT Madras), and M Manivannan (IIT Madras).
Integration:   The collaboration integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), Extended Reality (XR), and game design with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to create immersive, learner-centric education systems with personalised, gamified learning.
Capability:  The initiative enables personalised, gamified learning with real-time emotional feedback, reduces teacher workload through SEL integration, and ensures low-cost, low-bandwidth accessibility.
Advancement: The partnership promotes joint research in education technology, pedagogy, and AI, supports exchanges and academic events, and aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.7 on inclusive and sustainable education.
About IIT-M:  Established in 1959, located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN), is a premier institute of national importance known for research and innovation in science and technology.

DRDO & UoH Secure Patent for Next-Generation Rocket Propellant Fuel
In September 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials (ACRHEM) at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) announced that they had secured an Indian patent for BAM-H24, a next-generation solid rocket propellant fuel.

  • The Patent Office, Government of India(GoI), granted Patent No. 599900 on 20 August 2026. The patent application was filed on 21 December 2022.

Highlights of the Patent: 
Development: BAM-H24 was developed by Dr. Muddamarri Hanumantha Rao and Prof. Muralidharan Krishnamurthi of ACRHEM and the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad.
Composition:  BAM-H24 is a boron-, hydrogen-, and nitrogen-rich energetic compound designed for use as a solid rocket fuel, fuel additive, and burn-rate accelerator in propulsion systems.
Properties:  The compound exhibits high chemical and thermal stability, low sensitivity to impact and friction, non-hygroscopic nature, high specific impulse, and reduced ignition delay, ensuring safety and efficiency.
Application: The material is suitable for solid rocket propulsion, missile systems, and space launch vehicles.
Significance:  The patent strengthens India’s indigenous defence and space capabilities by adding advanced high-energy materials for strategic applications.

Birkbeck, University of London Receives UGC Approval to Establish Bengaluru Campus 
In September 2026, Birkbeck, University of London, United Kingdom (UK) received the Letter of Approval (LoA) from the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India (GoI), to establish and operate its Bengaluru campus, Karnataka, under the 2023 Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEIs) regulations.

  • The approval marks the final regulatory step and enabling the university to begin admissions and academic operations while offering globally recognised degrees in India at significantly lower costs.

Highlights of the Approval:
Campus:  Located at Sattva Tech Park, Bengaluru, Karnataka, the campus will offer undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes in Business fields, with degrees awarded by the University of London under Birkbeck’s academic oversight, at up to 60% lower cost than studying in the UK.
Features:  The programmes are research-led, industry-aligned, and maintain global academic standards enhance access to global education, supports the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, strengthens India–UK ties, and reduces the cost of studying abroad.
Partnership:  The campus is set up with the Education Centre of Australia (ECA) providing funding and operational support for quality delivery.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

UNEP Limiting Overshoot Report: 1.5°C warming overshoot is now ‘unavoidable’ 
In September 2026, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its latest report titled “Limiting Overshoot: Navigating exceedance of 1.5°C and pathways towards return”, exploring the risks and impacts related with higher levels of warming.

  • The report highlighted that the world is now mostly likely to “overshoot” or temporarily breach the global warming temperature threshold 1.5°C above preindustrial temperatures within the  next few years.

Key Findings:
Global Temperature: The report further  projected that global surface temperature is expected to peak at about 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels even under an “optimistic scenario”.
It further projected that with current global policies, the global temperature is expected to reach 2.6°C by 2100.
Irreversible Tipping Points: The report highlighted that some impacts from  temporary breach  of 1.5°C will be irreversible even if global temperatures decline.
Compounding Damage: The report cited that every additional 5 years of sustained high emission could possibly add approximately 0.1°C to peak warming.

UNGA Adopts ‘Correct the Map’ Resolution, Promotes Equal Earth Projection Reflecting Africa’s True Size 
On September 4 2026, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the “Correct the Map” resolution with 164 votes in favour, promoting the Equal Earth projection to replace the 16th-century ‘Mercator map’ for more accurate global representation, highlighting Africa’s true size as about 14 times larger than Greenland.

  • The resolution, sponsored by Togo and backed by African Union (AU) members, was adopted in the UNGA with 164 votes in favour, with support from France and the United Kingdom (UK), while the United States of America (USA) voted against and six countries abstained.

About UN Resolution on World Map:
Resolution Scope: Titled “Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation and Promoting Equitable Representation of the World’s Regions, Particularly Africa,” the resolution is non-binding and does not ban the Mercator projection. Instead, it encourages wider use of equal-area projections for general-purpose maps, education and public communication.
Equal Earth Projection: The resolution promotes the Equal Earth projection, an equal-area pseudocylindrical map projection that preserves the relative sizes of countries and continents while maintaining visually recognisable continental shapes.
Features: The initiative promotes replacing distorted maps in education, governance, and media, while retaining Mercator projection for navigation purposes where its accuracy in direction remains useful.

Overview of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Kyrgyzstan from August 31, 2026 to September 1, 2026
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi undertook a two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan, 2nd leg of his two Central Asian countries tour (Uzbekistan) from August 31, 2026 to September 01, 2026, at the invitation of  Sadyr Japarov, President of Kyrgyzstan, to attend the 26th meeting of the Council of Heads of State (CHS)of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
Highlights of the Visit:
6th Nomad Games: PM Narendra Modi, alongside several visiting SCO leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, attended the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, a biennial traditional sports event, in Bishkek, held from August 31, 2026 to September 6, 2026.
Bilateral Engagements : PM Modi held bilateral meetings with various SCO leaders, including Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran.
Gifts: PM Modi presented 10-volume of English translation of Mahabharata by eminent Indian economist Bibek Debroy as well as Ladakhi Tsugdul Blanket, a traditional woolen textile from Ladakh, to Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, while a Dokra artwork presented to Abdylbek Kasymaliev, PM of Kyrgyzstan.

  • PM Modi presented a sandalwood Shata Tantri Veena (popularly known as Santoor), a traditional musical instrument of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K); and two premium variants of Kangra tea (from Himachal Pradesh, HP); and original handwritten scoresheet of chess Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov from the 2025 International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Cup final (Goa, India) to Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan.

Razorpay and IndusInd Bank Launched AI Account Manager ‘RAY’ on WhatsApp for Businesses
In September 2026, Razorpay, India’s Omnichannel Payments Platform for Businesses, launched ‘RAY’, a conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) Account Manager on WhatsApp (Application), in partnership with IndusInd Bank Limited.

  • The platform enables businesses, with Bajaj Finserv among the first live users, to manage payments, transactions, settlements, and support through a simple chat-based interface.

Highlights of the Launch:
Access: Razorpay’s RAY on WhatsApp enables Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to manage payments, analyse transactions, generate links, issue refunds, and resolve queries via simple messages.
Automation: RAY executes actions directly without dashboards while tracking payment health and providing alerts, insights, and recommendations.
Adoption: Developed in partnership with IndusInd Bank, RAY has already recorded over 20,000 conversations, indicating a growing shift towards AI-led, conversational and real-time business support.
About Razorpay:  Established in 2014, founded by Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur, focused on providing digital payment and banking solutions for businesses, with its headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

SEBI and ESMA Sign MoU to Strengthen Cooperation on Central Counterparties
In September 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation and exchange of information related to Central Counterparties (CCPs) regulated and supervised by SEBI.

  • The MoU was signed by Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman of SEBI and Verena Ross, Chair of ESMA, replacing the earlier agreement signed between SEBI and ESMA on 21 June 2017.

About SEBI–ESMA MoU:
Framework: The agreement establishes an updated framework for cooperation between Indian and European market regulators amid growing cross-border financial market activities.

  • The MoU allows SEBI-supervised Indian CCPs to re-apply for ESMA recognition under European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR), as required under Article 25.

Supervisory Cooperation: The arrangement enables ESMA to rely on SEBI’s regulatory and supervisory activities relating to Indian CCPs, while supporting the financial stability of the European Union (EU) and facilitating international clearing activities.
CCP: It is a financial market infrastructure entities that acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers to manage counterparty risk and facilitate clearing and settlement.
About ESMA: Established in 2011 and headquartered in Paris, France, the ESMA is an independent financial regulatory authority of the EU.

Japan’s JCR Upgrades India’s Sovereign Credit Rating to ‘A-’ from ‘BBB+’ After 35 Years
In September 2026, Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCRA) upgraded India’s sovereign rating or Foreign Currency and Local Currency Long-term Issuer Ratings from “BBB+” to “A-” with a stable outlook, after 35 years of rating.

  • It has also upgraded the country ceiling by one notch i.e. to “A”.

Key Details:
Key Drivers : JCR upgraded India’s rating due to strong economic growth, effective policies, robust consumption and investment, and a stronger financial system.
India’s GDP: The agency further projected that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth will continue to be at more than 6% for 2026-27.
Fiscal Position: JCR noted that the Central Government’s fiscal deficit fell from 4.7% in Financial Year 2024-25(FY25) to 4.4% in FY26, while capital expenditure remained high.
Banking Sector: JCR cited the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), government capital support and stricter Reserve Bank of India (RBI) supervision as key factors behind improved bank health, with the gross Non-Performing Asset (NPA) ratio falling to 1.8% by March 2026.
About JCRA: Established in April 1985, JCRA, a leading Japanese financial service company, headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

Bank of Canada Unveils CAD 20 Note, Featuring King Charles III
In September 2026, Bank of Canada (BoC) unveiled a new Canadian Dollars (CAD) 20 banknote which features the image of King Charles III, the 1st British monarch to appear on Canadian currency note in over 7 decades, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

  • With this, Canada became the 1st Commonwealth country to feature King Charles on its banknote outside Britain.

Key Features:
Orientation: One of the unique features of the newly unveiled banknote is its vertical orientation, which makes it the second vertical banknote issued in Canada’s series after the CAD 10 bill.

  • The USD 10 bill due to its design was selected as best in the world in 2018 by the International Bank Note Society.

Reverse Side: The reverse side of the banknote has an illustrious image of the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France, honouring Canada’s role in World War-I.
Floral Motifs: The new banknote features floral emblems of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories, along with several culturally important flowers among the country’s indigenous population, including wild strawberries, western red cedar, braided  sweetgrass and arctic cotton.
Circulation Timeline: As per the BoC, the new USD20 banknote will be in general circulation in early 2027.

NHAI Announces Winners of ‘Green Highways Excellence Awards 2026’
In September 2026, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced the winners of the ‘Green Highways Excellence Awards 2026’, instituted to recognise and promote best practices in National Highway (NH) landscaping and plantation management.

  • The Green Highways Excellence Awards were instituted by the NHAI in 2025 under the Green Highways Policy, 2015 of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH)

About Green Highways Excellence Awards 2026:
Nomination: Entries were invited through the NHAI online portal, with 86 nominations received across three categories: 27 for Avenue Plantations, 36 for Median Plantations, and 23 for Plantation in Land Parcels.

  • After the initial screening, 15 nominations (5 from each category) were shortlisted for final evaluation.

Category I: Avenue Plantations: Chilakaluripet Bypass (NH-16, Vijayawada) – 1st, Vadodara–Kim Expressway (Gandhinagar) – 2nd, NH-925/925A sections (Jaipur) – 3rd, and Trichy–Karaikudi maintenance project (Madurai) – Consolation.

National Teachers’ Day 2026 – September 5
National Teachers’ Day is observed annually across India on 5 September to honour teachers for their dedication and invaluable contributions, while highlighting their role in educating, mentoring, and shaping students and society.

  • The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned scholar, philosopher, the first Vice-President (1952–1962), and the second President of India (1962–1967).

Background:
Origin: In 1962, when Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the second President of India, his students sought to celebrate his birthday, but he suggested observing 5 September as Teachers’ Day instead.
Celebration: Teachers’ Day was first celebrated on 5 September 1962, marking his birth anniversary and honoring the role of educators in society.
2026 Events: On 5th September 2026, the President of India Droupadi Murmu conferred National Teachers Awards 2026 to 48 school teachers and National Awards to Teachers (NAT) on 21 teachers/faculties of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and polytechnics to recognise excellence in teaching.

International Day of Charity 2026 – September 5 
The United Nations (UN) observes the International Day of Charity every year on September 5 to highlight the importance of charitable work and humanitarian efforts in addressing global social and economic challenges.

Punjab Launches  ‘Pehchaan’ Portal to Identify Unidentified & Unclaimed Deceased Persons 
In September 2026, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh launched ‘Pehchaan’, a statewide digital identification portal for tracing unidentified and unclaimed deceased persons in government mortuaries.

  • Punjab became the first state in India to implement such a system.

About Pehchaan Portal:
Overview: Pehchaan is built on Punjab’s MedLEaPR medico-legal system, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) following directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

  • The portal is publicly accessible, free of charge, and can be searched by families in India and abroad.

Features: It stores photos, physical traits and identification marks of unidentified deceased persons within 48 hours, enables online search and claims, and automatically alerts Investigating Officers (IOs) for verification.
Integration: MedLeaPR links police, courts, health institutions and nine forensic science laboratories, and integrates with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) to match missing-person and unidentified-deceased records.

Tamil Nadu CM C. Joseph Vijay Announces Olympic City in Chennai 
In September 2026, Tamil Nadu (TN) Chief Minister (CM) C. Joseph Vijay announced the establishment of a world-class TN Olympic City in Chennai, TN, to strengthen sports infrastructure and enhance India’s medal prospects in global events.
About Olympic City:
Location:  The project will be developed at Semmencheri , replacing the earlier Global Sports City plan, and is designed to be larger and more comprehensive.
Key Facilities: The proposed Olympic City will include world-class sports arenas, state-of-the-art sporting equipment, a High-Performance Training Centre, Sports Science Centre, Sports Medicine Centre, and accommodation facilities for athletes and coaches.
Initiatives:  The state will set up a Talent Research Wing (TRW), establish Olympic Centres of Excellence(CoE) in 10 locations, and develop a Motor Sports City for Formula racing events.
