In August 2026, the Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and Ministry of Cooperation (MoC) inaugurated the new premises of the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC) at Sharada Sadan in Fort, Mumbai.
Event Details
Programme: The inauguration was held during the ‘Sahkar Nav-Kranti’ programme, which focused on strengthening and modernising the Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) through technology, cybersecurity and banking infrastructure.
- The programme was held today at the BSE International Convention Centre in Mumbai.
Book released: The Union Minister released the book ‘Operational Risk Management – A Practical Guide to Urban Co-operative Banks’, written by former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy General Manager (DGM) G. P. Mistry.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurates IIHT SUTRA 2026, first National Conclave of IIHTs in New Delhi, Delhi
In August 2026, Union Minister Giriraj Singh, Ministry of Textiles MoT) inaugurated IIHT SUTRA 2026, the first national conclave of the Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHTs), organised by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) of MoT, at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC) in New Delhi, Delhi.
- The conclave was held under the theme “IIHTs: Weaving the Future of the Indian Handloom Sector – Educate. Innovate”, brought together policymakers, academics, industry representatives, research institutions, alumni and students to deliberate on the future of handloom education.

Key MoUs: The key highlight of the inaugural session of the conclave was the signing of three strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed to strengthen institutional collaboration across complementary domains:
- The 1st MoU signed with Grasim Industries Limited is designed to focus on areas like: curriculum enrichment, internships, industry exposure, skill development and collaborative initiatives.
- The 2nd MoU signed with the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA), aimed to promote collaborative research, testing, innovation, technical support and capacity building.
- The third MoU signed with Indian Institute of Management (IIM Sambalpur) (Odisha) will promote leadership development, entrepreneurship, innovation, faculty development and institutional capacity building.
Felicitation of Awards: During the event, meritorious IIHT students were felicitated with the Gold Medals and Rank Certificates for their academic performance.
Key Releases by MoT: In addition, the event also witnessed the release of “Handloom Change Makers”, a publication which highlights the achievements of eminent IIHT alumni in industry, entrepreneurship, exports, research and public service.
- Also, the Union Textile Minister launched the MoT’s film on IIHTs titled “Weaving India’s Handloom Future”, showcasing the journey, achievements and future vision of the IIHTs and their contribution in developing skilled professionals and supporting the transformation of India’s handloom sector.
‘Srijan: Voices from the Loom’: The Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, organised ‘Srijan: Voices from the Loom’, a special gathering to celebrate the women behind India’s handlooms and recognise their inspiring journeys, voices and contributions to the weaving heritage of the country, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi (Delhi).
- During the event, MoT released an anthology presenting the inspiring stories, journeys and voices of these women weavers and their contribution in India’s handloom sector.
DIBD and NITI Aayog Signed SoI to Advance Multilingual AI for Inclusive Governance
In August 2026, the Digital India BHASHINI(BHASHa INterface for India) Division (DIBD) which works under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), to advance multilingual, voice-first Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for inclusive governance and citizen-centric public services through the BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan initiative.
- The agreement was formally signed by Amitabh Nag, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DIBD; and Shoyabahmed Kalal, Director of NITI Aayog.
Key Details of Agreement:
Aim: The newly formed strategic partnership seeks to use BHASHINI’s multilingual AI ecosystem to enable more inclusive and accessible governance by merging AI-powered language technologies across NITI Aayog’s digital platforms and services.
Platforms: As per the agreement , both organisations will jointly work across various platforms of BHASHINI such as: BHASHINI Udyat, BHASHINI Mitra, BHASHINI AppMitra, BHASHINI Sahayogi and BHASHINI Pravakta, to cover improvements to translation models, integration of language technologies and communication workflows, and development of tools used across different sectors.
Data-Driven Governance: The collaboration builds on NITI TARA (Toolkit for Analysis, Review & Action) and SMRITI (System for Meeting Recording, Information & Transcription Interface).
Union Minister Amit Shah Launches Gramin Gyan Setu App to Interconnect Libraries in Gandhinagar
On August 12 2026, Union Minister, Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) and Ministry of Cooperation, launched the ‘Gramin Gyan Setu’ application(app) through video conferencing to integrate libraries across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency of Gujarat.
- The initiative will enable children in villages to access a much larger collection of books, thereby promoting reading habits, learning and knowledge accessibility in rural areas.
About Gramin Gyan Setu App:
Launch: The app was launched on the birth anniversary of Padma Shri S. R. R. Ranganathan, observed as National Library Day, highlighting the importance of libraries in promoting knowledge, reading and education.
Library Network: Around 63 village libraries have been established and 752 libraries connected through the Gramin Gyan Setu app. Four libraries with around 2.8 lakh books have been linked to rural libraries,
Book Delivery: MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS)-funded vans will visit villages every fortnight to collect issued books and deliver books requested through the app, giving rural children access to a wider range of books.
PCIM&H and IPC Renew MoU to Strengthen ‘One Herb, One Standard’ Initiative
In August 2026, the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H), Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen scientific standardisation of medicinal plants under the ‘One Herb, One Standard’ initiative.
- The MoU was exchanged by Dr. Kousthubha Upadhyaya, Director (Independent Charge), PCIM&H, and Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, IPC, in the presence of Union Minister of State(MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav, Ministry of AYUSH, and Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH at Kartavya Bhavan, New Delhi, Delhi.
Highlights of the MoU:
Duration: Initiated in 2022, the renewed MoU extending for 3 years to establish uniform quality standards for medicinal plants.
Aim: The initiative aims to establish a common standard for the same medicinal plant across Ayurveda, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, Unani and Homoeopathy.
Global Alignment: The renewed framework will align Indian standards with international quality requirements, improving quality, exports and Ease of Doing Business while protecting India’s medicinal heritage.
About IPC: Established in 2009, it is headquartered in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh(UP), and is headed by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director.
India and SACU Signed ToR for Negotiations towards a Preferential Trade Agreement
In August 2026, the Government of India (GoI) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), an African regional economic organisation, signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) for negotiations towards a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi (Delhi), marking India’s first ToR with the African region.
- This development represents a major step towards strengthening trade and economic engagement between India and the SACU Member States.
About ToR:
Key Role of India: Under this collaboration, the GoI will play a pivotal role in supplying affordable medicines, fostering Information Technology (IT) talent development in the SACU region, and help integrate SACU countries into global supply chains.
Focus Sectors: The negotiations are focused on providing preferential market access in sectors like: engineering goods and machinery, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, agriculture and agri-processing.
Key Areas of Negotiations: PTA aims to cover eight important chapters, that include trade in goods and market access for goods; rules of origin and origin procedures; customs procedures and trade facilitation; trade remedies such as: bilateral safeguard mechanism; sanitary and phytosanitary measures; technical barriers to trade; dispute settlement; and legal and horizontal provisions.
About SACU: Founded in 1910, SACU is the world’s oldest customs union, comprising 5 African countries as its members (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Eswatini), with its headquarters in Windhoek, Namibia.
- The key mandate of the organisation is to maintain a common external tariff, share customs revenues, among others.

India and Malaysia Commence Exercise Udara Shakti 2026
In August 2026, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) commenced the bilateral Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 at Subang Air Base, Selangor, Malaysia, from 10 to 14 August (with the flying phase from 11 to 13 August) to enhance interoperability, operational coordination and defence cooperation between the two air forces.
- The exercise was inaugurated by RMAF Exercise Director Colonel Shamsul Shahreen bin Isa and IAF Exercise Director Group Captain Parijat Jha, with Indian Defence Adviser Colonel Praveen Sukumaran in attendance.
Highlights of the Exercise “Udara Shakti 2026”:
Background: It is a bilateral exercise conducted between the IAF and the RMAF, with its first edition held from August 13 to 16, 2022, at Kuantan Air Base in Malaysia.
Deployment: The IAF deployed four Dassault Rafale fighters from 101 Squadron and two Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft from 81 Squadron.
- While the RMAF deployed Sukhoi Su-30MKM jets from No. 12 Squadron, two F/A-18D Hornet fighters from No. 18 Squadron and Airbus A400M aircraft from No. 8 Squadron.

MCX, NISM Sign MoU to Set Up Commodity Markets Research Centre
In August 2026, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) at the Global Commodity Conclave 2026 to establish a dedicated Commodity Markets Research Centre for research, knowledge creation and capacity building in India’s commodity derivatives market.
About Commodity Markets Research Centre:
Focus: The centre, based at NISM, will focus on research, training and market awareness, with MCX providing commodity-market expertise and NISM contributing academic and research facilities.
Research Areas: The centre will undertake research in commodity derivatives, hedging mechanisms, corporate risk management, compliance frameworks, and evolving market practices.
Activities: The centre will undertake applied research studies, policy and white papers, Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs), doctoral fellowships, visiting scholar programmes, and academic conferences.
Training Programmes: The centre will develop training programmes on commodity derivatives for risk management, suitability requirements, ethical conduct, and compliance practices, catering to market participants, corporates, investors, and academics.

Bank of America to Acquire Up to 49.9% Stake in Jio Credit for Rs. 18,268 Crore
In August 2026, Bank of America Corporation (BofA) and Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL) entered into a Joint Venture (JV) Agreement under which BofA will acquire up to 49.9% stake in Jio Credit Limited(JCL), the wholly owned Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) lending subsidiary of JFSL through the exercise of warrants.
- The transaction valued at Rs 18,268 crore (approximately USD 1.9 billion), is subject to obtaining applicable regulatory and statutory approvals.
Key Details of Acquisition:
Acquisition: Under the transaction, BofA will initially acquire a 26.5% equity stake (Rs. 6,612.90 crore) in JCL through a preferential allotment of equity shares.
Governance Structure: The Board will have equal representation from JFSL and BofA, while the existing management team will continue to oversee the company’s strategy and operations.
Benefits: The partnership will provide Jio Credit with additional capital for sustainable loan growth and access to global expertise in financial services, governance, risk management, and technology solutions.
JCL: Jio Credit Limited, formerly known as Jio Finance Limited, was established on 19 January 2000 and has its registered office in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

CSL Delivers 2nd HS EcoFreighter MPV ‘MS Maria’ to Germany-Based HS Schiffahrts
In August 2026, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered MS Maria, second of the eight HS EcoFreighter series of Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs) to Germany-based shipping firm HS Schiffahrts UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co KG, Germany.
- The Delivery and Acceptance Protocol was signed by S Harikrishnan, Director (Operations), CSL and Heinz Josef Schepers, Director, HS Schiffahrts UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co KG.
- CSL delivered its first vessel, MS Heinz on 12 January 2026
About MS Maria:
Design: The vessel is designed by Groot Ship Design, Netherlands and built by CSL in accordance with the classification rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
Design Features: It features a raked stem with the Groot Crossbow design optimized for enhancing speed performance and fuel efficiency along with a transom stern
Cargo Capability: A 7,000 DWT (Deadweight Tonnage) ice-class vessel designed for worldwide trading and capable of carrying diverse cargo, including project cargo, heavy cargo, steel coils, containers, timber, paper, dry bulk cargo such as coal and grain, and dangerous goods.

Delhi University Scientists Discover 3 New Cascade Frog Species in Northeast India
In August 2026, scientists led by Prof. S. D. Biju from University of Delhi discovered three new cascade frog species in Northeast India: Ammachi’s Cascade Frog (Amolops ammachi) from Tripura, Sendenyu Cascade Frog (Amolops sendenyu) from Nagaland, and Beautiful Cascade Frog (Amolops bella) from West Bengal (WB).
- The study was published in the Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, highlighting India’s rich amphibian diversity.
Key Details of the Discovery:
Research: The study was based on over 15 years of fieldwork covering more than 300 geographic frog populations using DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequencing and morphology.
Naming: Ammachi’s Cascade Frog was discovered in Tripura’s Jampui Hills and named after Padmini Varkey, a Kerala-based social worker and philanthropist who was fondly known as “Ammachi”. It is a medium-sized frog measuring around 80 millimetre(mm) and is characterised by a light brown body with olive-green reticulated patterns.
Additional: The study also documented five cascade frog species newly recorded in India: Marbled Cascade Frog (Amolops afghanus), Nepal Cascade Frog (Amolops nepalicus), Wangyal’s Cascade Frog (Amolops wangyali), Medog Cascade Frog (Amolops medogensis), and Pianma Cascade Frog (Amolops bellulus).

Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Passed Away at 97
In August 2026, former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, known for spearheading major economic reforms and restructuring state-owned industries, passed away at the age of 97 in Beijing, China. He was born in 1928 in Hunan province, China.

Donor and Recipient: The transplant was performed between identical twins Ronald and Richard Lee Herrick, with Ronald donating a kidney to Richard, who was suffering from chronic kidney failure.
