Cabinet Approves Rs 23,731 Crore GOBARdhan Scheme; Rs 8,970.20 crore NH Project in Assam
In August 2026, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved the Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan ) scheme with a total budget outlay of Rs 23,731 crore, marking a major step towards India’s clean energy journey 

  • The scheme will be implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) for a period of 10 years i.e. from FY27 to FY36.

About GOBARdhan Scheme:
Aim: To transform India’s vast organic waste resources into clean energy, rural livelihoods and economic growth.
Key Target: The scheme seeks to increase domestic Compressed Biogas (CBG) production by nearly 10-times and attract large-scale private investment through assured offtake by city gas distributors, stable administered pricing, capital subsidies, financial support and pipeline infrastructure.
CCEA Approved Rs 8,970 crore NH Project in Assam:
Approved by: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved the construction of a 135.87-kilometer (km)-long  four-lane access-controlled Guwahati–Tezpur corridor on National Highway (NH-15) in Assam.

Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth Becomes IAF’s First Woman Fighter Combat Leader
In August 2026, Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth became the first woman fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to successfully complete the prestigious Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh (MP).

  • The achievement makes her the first woman graduate of the IAF’s elite “Top Gun” school, where only about 1% of IAF pilots are selected for the 20-week advanced combat programme.

About Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth: 
Background: An engineering graduate from Darbhanga, Bihar, she was commissioned into the IAF in June 2016 as one of India’s first three women fighter pilots alongside Mohana Singh and Avani Chaturvedi.
Career: She initially flew the MiG-21 Bison before transitioning to the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI, becoming the first woman fighter pilot qualified for daytime combat missions in 2019, the first to participate in the Republic Day parade in 2021 and flew in the Republic Day flypast in 2024.
Qualification: FCL qualification is awarded after completing the TACDE’s 20-week advanced combat course, enabling pilots to lead complex air combat operations and tactical missions.
About Indian Air Force (IAF): The IAF, established on 8 October 1932 and headquartered in New Delhi(Delhi), is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh serves as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS).

LASPL and Massivit Signs MoU To Establish India’s First Large-Format Additive Manufacturing Facility
In August 2026, Lohia Aerospace Systems Private Limited (LASPL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel-based Massivit to establish India’s first commercial large-format additive manufacturing facility at its Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh(UP) facility, with an investment of USD 8–10 million over the next 1–2 years.
Key Details of MoU:
Objective: The facility will use Massivit’s large-format three-dimensional(3D)-printing platform to produce composite tooling, aerospace moulds and production tools, reducing production cycles by up to 90% for faster and cost-effective manufacturing.
Applications: Under the partnership, LASPL will hold exclusive rights to deploy the technology for aerospace and defence applications in India, including the manufacturing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), manned aircraft, and critical aerospace components.
Significance: Supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening indigenous aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities.
About Lohia Aerospace Systems: Established in 2019 and based in Kanpur, UP, it specializes in aerospace and defence composite manufacturing.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Expands Upper-Layer NBFC list to 17 for FY27; retains Tata Sons in the List
In August 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) identified 17 Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) for inclusion in the Upper Layer (UL) for the year 2026-27 with reference to financials as on March 31, 2026.

  • Tata Sons, which is the unlisted parent company of the Tata group, continues to fall under the category of upper-tier NBFCs

NBFC-UL New List
List Increased: The number of NBFCs classified under the Upper Layer (NBFC-UL) has increased from 15 in January 2025 to 17 for 2026–27.
New Additions: The following NBFCs have been added in this year’s list:

  • Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Limited
  • Power Finance Corporation (PFC) Limited
  • Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) Limited
  • Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) Limited

RBI Extended Loan Recovery Norms deadline to January 01 2027
In August 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) extended the implementation timeline of its revised framework governing loan recovery and the engagements of recovery agents from October 01, 2026 to January 01, 2027.
Key Directions:
Relaxation in Certification Timeline: As per the RBI directions, existing recovery agents that were not previously covered will now have a one-year transition window to obtain certification from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF) or an institute having a tie up with IIBF.
Exempted Entities: RBI has clarified that the revised framework will not be applicable to an Regulated Entity (RE)’s own employees doing recovery jobs, agents collecting regular periodic installments, or law firms assisting lenders by issuing notices or representing them before courts.
RBI Approval: Muthoot FinCorp Limited secured a perpetual Authorised Dealer Category-II (AD-II) foreign exchange (Forex) licence from the RBI, enabling the Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) to offer a wider range of regulated forex services.

SBI Life Partners with J&K Bank to Offer Insurance Solutions Across India
In August 2026, SBI Life Insurance Company Limited entered into a corporate agency partnership with Jammu & Kashmir Bank Limited (J&K Bank) to distribute and service SBI Life’s insurance products through J&K Bank’s branch network across India.

  • It aims to strengthen financial inclusion while supporting the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) vision of ‘Insurance for All by 2047’.

About SBI Life–J&K Bank Partnership:
Objective: The partnership aims to expand insurance penetration and financial inclusion by leveraging SBI Life’s expertise and J&K Bank’s trusted customer network.
Coverage: Customers will have access to SBI Life’s comprehensive portfolio of protection, savings, retirement, and child insurance plans designed to meet diverse financial needs and life stages.
About SBI Life Insurance: Founded in March 2001 and headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, it is an Indian life insurance company established as a joint venture (JV) between State Bank of India (SBI) and BNP Paribas Cardif.

Standard Chartered Gets IFSCA Approval to Offer Wealth Management Products from GIFT City
In August 2026, Standard Chartered Bank received approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to offer wealth management products and services through its branch at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

  • The approval enables the bank to provide a wider range of investment solutions to resident and non-resident clients through India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

Key Highlights:
Objective: This regulatory approval enables the bank to launch its Retail wealth management services, Capital market products and expanded financial solutions directly from GIFT City.
Significance: The initiative strengthens GIFT City’s role as an international financial hub by expanding access to global wealth management capabilities for Indian and international clients and supporting India’s vision of developing GIFT IFSC as a global financial gateway.
Operations: Standard Chartered became the first foreign bank to commence operations at GIFT City in 2020. It currently provides lending, trade finance, transaction services, and financial markets products to corporate and institutional clients from the centre.
Market Share: It holds approximately 50% market share among Regional Treasury Centres (RTCs) operating from GIFT City.

Indian Bank Approves Rs 500 Crore MSME Loans During 120th Foundation Day Credit Outreach Programme
In August 2026, Indian Bank (IB) approved nearly Rs 500 crore to Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME) loans to 128 beneficiaries and mobilising credit proposals worth nearly Rs. 1,250 crore during a Credit Outreach Programme in New Delhi, Delhi as part of its 120th Foundation Day Fortnight Celebrations.

  • The initiative enables faster, paperless loan processing with in-principle approval in about 30 minutes and One-Time Password (OTP)-based digital documentation under the MSME Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework.

Highlights of the Event:
MSME Portal:  The programme also marked the launch of the Unified Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Portal, a digital platform designed to provide seamless and integrated lending services for MSME customers.

  • The portal enables digital lending using Permanent Account Number (PAN), Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Udyam Registration details with data support through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and account aggregators.

CSR Initiatives:  IB  also distributed wheelchairs and sewing machines under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to support mobility and livelihoods.
About Indian Bank (IB):  Established on 15 August 1907, headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN), and is headed by Binod Kumar, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO).

Kroll Report 2025: Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan Topped Indian Celebrity Brand Rankings at USD 177.9 million
 In August 2026, an American global financial advisory firm, Kroll released the 11th edition of the report titled ‘Kroll Celebrity Brand Valuation 2025’.  As per the report, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan emerged as India’s most valuable celebrity, securing the top position in the rankings with a brand value of USD 177.9 million.

  • He was followed by actor Ranveer Singh, who retained 2nd place with a brand value of USD 162.9 million, while cricketer Virat Kohli slipped from 1st (2024) to 3rd place, with a brand value of USD 158.4 million.

About Celebrity Brand Valuation Report:
Combined Brand Value: The report showed that the combined brand value of India’s top 25 celebrities stood at an estimated USD 2 billion in 2025, marking a 3.7% decrease compared to the previous year.
Other Top 5 Celebrities: Bharat Ratna Awardee and Legendary Indian Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar continued to be featured among top 5 of the list, by moving up by one place to 4th  in 2025, with total brand valuation of USD 125.9 million, compared to USD 91.3 million (in 2023). 

  • Former Captain of Indian Men’s Cricket team Mahendra Singh Dhoni ranking improved from 7th (in 2024) to 5th (in 2025), supported by a significant increase in brand endorsements and an overall brand value of USD 115.3 million.

Most Valued Female Celebrity: This year, the ranking of famous Indian actress and producer Alia Bhatt dropped to 6th spot (down from 4th spot in 2024) with a total brand valuation of USD 93.9 million. Despite a drop in the rankings, Alia Bhatt  again emerged as the most valued female celebrity in the list.

  • She is closely followed by Deepika Padukone ranked at 7th post with a brand value of USD 89.2 million.

Women Representation: Despite no women in this year’s top 5 list, the rankings featured 12 women in the top 25, up from 9 in 2024 list.

  • The report noted women celebrities witnessed an increase of 30% in both brand value and endorsement count, with approximately 10% of male brand value being captured by women since 2023.

India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-4 Medium-Range Ballistic Missile from Chandipur, Odisha
In August 2026, India successfully conducted the flight test of the Agni-4 Medium-Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Balasore district, Odisha.

  • The missile test was conducted by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and successfully validated all operational and technical parameters under the aegis of the SFC.

About Agni-4 Missile:
Overview: The Agni-4 is an indigenously developed, two-stage, surface-to-surface medium-range ballistic missile equipped with solid-fuel rocket motors for propulsion.
Range: The missile is designed to carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg over a range of approximately 4,000 kilometer(km).
Specifications: It weighs approximately 17,000 kilogram(kg), with a length of around 20m  (metres) and a diameter of about 1.2m at its lower stage.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa Wins Maiden Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz Title
Indian Grandmaster (GM) R Praggnanandhaa won his maiden Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz title at Saint Louis, Missouri, United States of America (USA) held on July 31 – August 7, 2026, finishing ahead of Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan).

  • R Praggnanandhaa dominated the tournament by winning the rapid section and maintaining his lead in blitz, finishing with 23.5 points after losing only one blitz game.

About Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz 2026:
Overview: The Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz 2026 was the fourth leg of the 11th edition of Grand Chess Tour (GCT), featuring elite Grandmasters competing in rapid and blitz formats for tour points and qualification to the season-ending finals.
Organiser: Saint Louis Chess Club is the primary organizer and host of the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament.
Format: The tournament consisted of a nine-round rapid event followed by an 18-round blitz event. Rapid wins earned two points, while blitz wins earned one point toward the overall standings.

England Pacer John Turner Announces Retirement from Professional Cricket
In August 2026, England fast bowler John Turner announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 25 after a five-year career (2021–2026), with a prolonged back stress fracture and recurring injuries ending his playing career.
About John Turner:
International: He played two One Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for England on the 2024 West Indies tour, taking three wickets after earning his call-up through strong performances in The Hundred and for England Lions.
Domestic: He joined Hampshire in 2021, played 51 matches across formats with 97 wickets, excelled in the 2023 T20 Blast, and also made brief appearances for Lancashire on loan in 2025.

National Handloom Day 2026 – August 7
National Handloom Day is observed annually across India on 7 August to honour the country’s handloom weavers and recognise the handloom sector’s significant contribution to India’s socio-economic development.
Background:
Origin: The Government of India (GoI) declared 7 August as National Handloom Day in 2015 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on 7 August 1905 against the British partition of Bengal, led by Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal.
Observance: The 1st National Handloom Day was inaugurated in 2015 by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).
2026 Event: The Ministry of Textiles (MoT) celebrated the 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre (RBCC), New Delhi, Delhi, graced by President Droupadi Murmu as the Chief Guest.

Quit India Movement Day 2026- August 8
Quit India Movement Day, also known as August Kranti Diwas, is observed annually across India on 8 August to commemorate the anniversary of the Quit India Movement on 8 August 1942, led by Mahatma Gandhi, which called for the immediate withdrawal of British rule and became a landmark movement in India’s freedom struggle.
About Quit India Movement: 
Background: The failure of the ‘Cripps Mission’ in April 1942 to secure Indian cooperation during World War II (WWII) led to the launch of the Quit India Movement.
Movement: The Quit India Movement, also known as August Kranti, August Movement or Bharat Chodo Andolan, began on 9 August 1942 with Gandhi’s “Do or Die” (Karo ya Maro) call at Gowalia Tank Maidan (now August Kranti Maidan), after which the British arrested Gandhi and other national leaders.
Leadership: Aruna Asaf Ali, known as the “Heroine of 1942”, “Queen of the August Revolution” and “Grand Old Lady of the Independence Movement”, hoisted the Indian flag at Gowalia Tank Maidan and was later awarded the Padma Vibhushan (1992) and the Bharat Ratna (posthumously, 1997).

Nagasaki Day 2026 – August 9 
Nagasaki Day is annually observed across the globe on 9 August to commemorate the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan by the United States of America (USA) in 1945 during World War II (WWII: 1939–1945).

  • 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

Background:
Inaugural Ceremony:   The first Nagasaki Day ceremony was held on 9 August 1947 by the Government of Japan to remember the victims of the atomic bombing and promote lasting peace.
Memorial Venue:  The annual memorial service is held at the Peace Statue Plaza, Nagasaki Peace Park, Nagasaki, Japan.

  • The park features a 10-metre(m) bronze Peace Statue, symbolising remembrance of bombing victims and the global peace movement.

Nagasaki Atomic Bombing (1945):
Bombing Details:  On 9 August 1945, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) B-29 bomber “Bockscar” dropped the second atomic bomb, “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki, Japan, which was detonated at an altitude of around 1,650 feet after being released from approximately 29,000 feet.
Fat Man:  “Fat Man” was a plutonium-based implosion-type atomic bomb with an explosive force of 21,000 tons of TNT (Trinitrotoluene), weighing over 10,800 pounds (approx. 4,670 kilogram- kg), with a length of 10.8 feet and a diameter of 60 inches.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2026 – August 9 
The United Nations (UN’s) International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples also known as ‘World Tribal Day’ is observed annually across the world on 9 August to recognise the contributions, cultures, traditions, languages and knowledge systems of indigenous communities worldwide.

  • 2026 Theme:  “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being”.

Background:
UN Declaration:  The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/49/214 on 23 December 1994 and proclaimed 9 August as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
First Observance:  The first International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed on 9 August 1995.
Significance:  The date commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations (WGIP) held in 1982 in Geneva, Switzerland.
