NATIONAL AFFAIRS

India-Oman CEPA Came into Force on June 01 2026; Opens duty-free access for 99.38% of Indian exports to Oman
India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) officially came into force on June 01 2026, in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and Issa Saleh Al Shibani, Ambassador of Oman to India,  in New Delhi, Delhi.

• Following the operationalisation of India-Oman CEPA, the 1st consignments availing preferential tariff benefits under the agreement included agriculture and gems and jewellery exports from Mumbai (Maharashtra), Kolkata (West Bengal, WB) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu, TN)were also flagged off.

Key Features:
Duty-Free Export: CEPA offers 99.38% of its tariff lines which includes 98.08% of India’s exports, making it one of the most comprehensive market access outcomes secured by India in the Gulf region.

• Earlier, under the MFN regime, only 15.33% of India’s exports entered Oman duty-free. With CEPA, Indian exporters gain substantial price competitiveness in Oman’s nearly USD 28 billion import market.

Liberalised Tariffs on Imports from Oman: On the other hand, the GoI offers liberalised tariffs on 77.79% of its total tariff lines, which covers 94.81% of what India imports from Oman.

Sub-Sectors Covered: Under the CEPA, Oman has  committed to expand its market access across 127 services sub-sectors, covering Most Favoured Nation (MFN) commitments; binding commitments for defined categories of professionals (engaged in Accounting, Engineering, Medicine , Information Technology, IT , Education , Construction).
Mobility: Under CEPA, business visitors can now stay in Oman for a maximum of 90 days; Independent professionals (up to 180 days); Intra-Corporate Transferees (ICTs) (up to 4 years).

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Presents ‘Sagar Aankalan’ Award to DPA for Best Port Performance
In May 2026, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), formerly Kandla Port Trust in Kandla (Gujarat), bagged the best-performing port under the ‘Handling of Container Cargo- less than 0.5 Million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs)’ category at the Sagar Aankalan- Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).

• The award  was presented by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) to Nilabhra Dasgupta, Deputy Chairman of DPA, during a function organised to celebrate the 37th anniversary of Jawahar Lal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Other Key Winners:
Dry Bulk Cargo: Among all the major ports in India, Paradip Port Authority (PPA) in Odisha,  secured top rankings at the Sagar Aankalan awards which included: 1st position in Dry Bulk Cargo category, handling over 5 million tonnes and 3rd position for its outstanding  overall performance in handling cargo in the category of ports handling less than 0.5 Million TEUs.
Liquid Bulk Cargo: As per the new LPPI for FY25, Sikka Port and Terminals Limited (SPTL) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, topped the liquid bulk cargo segment.

• Also, Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA)in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (AP), secured 2nd position in Sagar Aankalan Award‘ for ‘Excellence in Handling Liquid Bulk Cargo’ in the category of “ports handling 5 million tonnes and above”.

MoJS and ANRF Launches Rs 200 Crore MAHA Water Mission to Support Water Sector Startups 
In June 2026, the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) jointly launched the “Missions for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA) Water Mission”, a national innovation programme, during the national workshop on Research and Development (R&D) in Water, held in New Delhi, Delhi, to enhance India’s water security through research and technology-driven solutions.

• The mission has a financial outlay of Rs.200 crore over five years and will provide funding support of up to Rs.20 crore per consortium.

About MAHA Water Mission:
Objectives: It aims to promote innovation from laboratory to field deployment, develop scalable and localised water solutions, strengthen India’s long-term water security, and foster collaboration among academia, industry, and government.
Support: Selected multidisciplinary consortia can receive up to Rs.20 crore for technology development, field assessment, validation, and deployment.
Participants: Eligible stakeholders include universities, national laboratories, research organisations, startups, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and industry partners.
Themes: The mission focuses on Water Resource Assessment and Sustainable Management, Drinking Water, Water Quality and Ecological Health, Water Use Efficiency and Circular Economy, and Climate Resilience and Adaptation.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Launches Month-Long ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan‘ Campaign in MP
In June 2026, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) and Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) launched ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ to promote sustainable agriculture, improve soil health, and raise awareness on climate-resilient farming practices, in Ramsiya village, Raisen, Madhya Pradesh(MP).

• The month-long initiative commenced on June 1, 2026, and will continue until June 30, 2026.

Key Details of Launch:
Overview: Khet Bachao Abhiyan is a national campaign to reduce excessive urea use, improve soil health, and cut import dependence by addressing soil degradation and unsustainable farming.
Objective: This campaign promotes soil-test–based balanced nutrition, green manures, organic and bio-fertilisers, and Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) through field demonstrations.

BHASHINI, DPIIT Ink MoU to Expand Multilingual Access in Investment Ecosystem 
In June 2026, the Digital India BHASHINI(BHASHA Interface for India) Division (DIBD), under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), under the ‘BHASHINI Seva/Sanchalan – A BHASHINI Sahayogi Program’ to enhance multilingual digital capabilities across India’s industry and trade ecosystem through the BHASHINI platform.
Key Details of MoU:
Multilingual Access: The initiative will leverage BHASHINI’s Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered tools, including translation, speech-to-text, and text-to-speech technologies, to provide investment-related information and services in multiple Indian languages.

• It will support all 22 Eighth Schedule languages on DPIIT platforms, reducing language barriers and enhancing accessibility for entrepreneurs, startups, investors, businesses, and citizens.

Initiatives: The collaboration includes initiatives such as BHASHINI Udyat, Mitra, Appmitra, and Pravakta, along with Application Programming Interface (API) integration and multilingual AI tools.

Capacity Building and Innovation: The MoU will support language-data contributions, awareness campaigns, capacity-building efforts, and wider adoption of multilingual AI tools, while exploring new initiatives to strengthen India’s multilingual digital infrastructure and innovation ecosystem.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Annual Report 2025-26: RBI’s Balance Sheet for FY26 Expands by 20.6% to Rs 91.97 lakh crores
In May 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the “Annual Report 2025-26” and presented it to the Central Government (CG) under Section 53(2) of the RBI act,1934.

• This is the report of the Central Board of Directors on the working of the RBI for the year ended March 31, 2026.

Balance Sheet (BS) expanded by 20.6% in FY26
Expansion: The BS size increased by 20.6% (Rs 15.72 lakh crores (Cr)) from Rs 76.25 lakh Cr to Rs 91.97 lakh Cr as on March 31, 2026.

• A provision of Rs 1.09 lakh Cr was made and transferred to Contingency Fund (CF).

Asset Increase: Increase on assets side was due to rise in:

• Domestic investments by 44.9% to Rs 22.59 lakh Cr,
• Gold by 63.8% to Rs 10.94 lakh Cr and
• Foreign investments by 7.9% to Rs 52.68 lakh Cr

Fraud Amount: The amount involved in fraud cases reported by the banking sector shot up by 46% to Rs 48,021 Cr during FY26 as against Rs 32,803 Cr in the previous year.

• However, the number of fraud cases dipped to 10,114 from 23,722 a year ago.

HUL Inaugurated 3rd Fragrance R&D in Mumbai, Maharashtra
In June 2026, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), India’s largest Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company, inaugurated its new Unilever Fragrance Hub (UFH) at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) campus, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, marking the 3rd such global facility after the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).

• The newly launched centre was developed as part of HUL’s EUR 100 million investment programme that aims to advance in-house, digitally-enabled fragrance creation capabilities.

Key Details of UFH:
Technology Integration: The new fragrance hub, with estimated cost of Rs 95 crore integrates consumer insights, advanced science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support fragrance innovation across product categories.
Key Target: The new facility aims to achieve 20% reduction in product development cycles for HUL.
Significance: The facility is expected to expand India’s Research and Development (R&D) footprint by nearly 25% in the sensory segment and support over 30 local and premium brands.

Forbes World’s Top 10 Richest People 2026: Elon Musk, Larry Page and Jeff Bezos Ranked Leads Globally
In June 2026, Forbes, an American business magazine and global media company, released its latest World’s Top 10 Richest People rankings –  June2026, Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla and SpaceX, continued to retain the top spot since May 2024, with an estimated net worth of USD 835 billion as of June 1, 2026.

• Larry Page, co-founder of Alphabet Inc. (parent company of Google), emerged as the world’s 2nd richest person, with estimated net worth of USD 309 billion; followed by Sergey Brin, who is also co-founder of Alphabet Inc. (Google) ranked at 3rd position with estimated net worth of USD 285 billion.

Key Findings:
Jeff Bezos (4th Rank): Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, secured the 4th position among the world’s richest people with an estimated net worth of USD 277 billion as of June 2026.
Larry Ellison (5th Rank): Larry Ellison, co-founder and Chairman of Oracle Corporation, ranked 5th globally with an estimated net worth of USD 276 billion as of June 2026.
Other Top 10 Richest Person: Michael Dell (rank 6th, USD 260.1 billion); Mark Zuckerberg (rank 7th, USD 206.1 billion); Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA (rank 8th, USD 193.7 billion ); Bernard Arnault (rank 9th, USD 149.1 billion) and Steve Ballmer, former CEO of tech giant Microsoft (rank 10th, USD 143.5 billion) featured among the world’s top 10 richest people (as of June 2026).

Mahindra-Manulife JV Received MCA Approval for Incorporation of MMIL
In June 2026, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) approved the incorporation of Mahindra Manulife Insurance Limited (MMIL), a 50:50 life insurance joint venture between the Mahindra Group (India) and Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC) (Canada), aimed at delivering Artificial Intelligence (AI)-native, digitally-led insurance solutions across rural, semi-urban, and urban India under the vision of “Insurance for All.”

• The joint venture combines Mahindra’s extensive domestic distribution network with Manulife’s global expertise in insurance product innovation, underwriting and agency-led distribution.

Leadership: Suresh Agarwal has been appointed as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)-designate of MMIL.
Positioning: MMIL is an AI-native, digitally-led, customer-first insurer using AI, data-driven underwriting, and digital engagement to deliver insurance solutions.

Indian Army tests Divyastra Mk-1 built for intelligence, surveillance 
In June 2026, The Indian Army successfully completed operational trials of the Divyastra Mk-1, an advanced indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI-powered) tactical loitering munition system in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

• It was developed by Hoverit designed to strengthen intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities along India’s border regions.

About Divyastra Mk-1:
Overview:   The Divyastra Mk-1 is an indigenous tactical UAV developed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions.
Loitering munition: It is an aerial system that loiters over an area before striking a target. The Divyastra Mk-1 features AI (Artificial Intelligence) and swarm capabilities for autonomous navigation, target recognition, and coordinated strikes and decoy missions.

New Species Mesalina bishnoi Discovered in Rajasthan; First Record of Genus Mesalina in India 
In June 2026, scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered  a new lizard species, Mesalina bishnoi, near Gajner in Bikaner district, Rajasthan, marking the first confirmed record of the genus Mesalina in India, following field surveys conducted in August 2025 and published after morphological and genetic validation.

• The species belongs to the arid-adapted lacertid lizards and was named in honour of the Bishnoi community for its conservation ethos.

About the Discovery of Mesalina bishnoi:
Overview: Mesalina bishnoi is a newly described small, fast-moving, diurnal lizard (snout-vent length ~39.2 millimeter, mm) discovered in the Thar biogeographic province of Rajasthan.
Identification: The species shows greyish to olive-brown coloration with dorsolateral stripes from neck to tail, black markings behind the eyes, and a white-spotted mottled camouflage pattern, belonging to the family Lacertidae.
Methodology: Its identification was confirmed through morphological examination and mitochondrial DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) analysis, establishing it as a distinct evolutionary lineage within the Mesalina watsonana species complex.
Significance: The discovery expands India’s reptile biodiversity, validates earlier unconfirmed records, highlights hidden Thar Desert biodiversity, and reinforces the importance of taxonomic research, with specimens found near Gajner, Bikaner during field surveys alongside species like Hemidactylus sahgali, Platyceps ventromaculatus, and Echis carinatus.

Indian Women’s Team Won 10 Medals Including 2 Gold at U17 Asian Wrestling Championships 2026 in Vietnam 
The Under 17 (U17) Asian Wrestling Championships 2026 held in Da Nang, Vietnam from May 28–31, 2026, where Indian Women’s wrestling team secured a 100% podium finish with a total haul of 10 medals (2 Gold, 3 Silver, 5 Bronze) across all 10 weight categories, highlighting India’s growing depth in youth-level wrestling.

• Diksha (43 kilogram, kg) and Garima (73kg), won gold medals with dominant performances in their respective weight classes in the Women’s Wrestling (WW) category.

About U17 Asian Wrestling Championships 2026:
Organiser: The event was organised by the United World Wrestling (UWW).
Competition Format: The championship featured competitions across three disciplines—Men’s Freestyle (FS), Men’s Greco-Roman (GR), and Women’s Wrestling (WW).

Oscar-Winning ‘Star Wars’ Editor Marcia Lucas Passes Away at 80
In June 2026, Marcia Lou Griffin(Marcia Lucas), the Academy Award-winning film editor best known for her contributions to the original Star Wars trilogy, passed away at the age of 80 in Rancho Mirage, California, United States of America (USA). She was born on October 4, 1945, in Modesto, California.
About Marcia Lucas: 
Profile: She was a renowned film editor and one of the pioneering women editors of Hollywood’s New Hollywood era, recognized for her significant contributions to some of the most influential films of the 1970s and 1980s, including the original Star Wars trilogy.
Career: She began her film editing career in the late 1960s and gained prominence through her collaborations with filmmakers George Lucas and Martin Scorsese.
Awards: She won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1978).

• She also received an Academy Award nomination for American Graffiti and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award nomination for Taxi Driver.

World Milk Day 2026 – June 1
World Milk Day (WMD) is observed annually across the globe on June 1 to promote the nutritional value of milk, encourage its consumption, and recognize the dairy sector’s contribution to global nutrition, economic development, and sustainability.

• 2026 Theme: “Celebrating Women Farmers.”

Background: 
Establishment: WMD was established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) to promote milk’s benefits and celebrate the global dairy sector.
1st Observance: The first WMD was observed on June 1, 2001.
Date Selection: June 1 was chosen as many countries celebrate National Milk Day around the same time, facilitating a unified global observance.

International Sex Workers’ Day 2026 – June 2 
International Sex Workers’ Day, also known as International Whores’ Day, is observed every year on 2 June worldwide to recognize the contributions of sex workers, raise awareness about the challenges they face, including criminalization, police harassment, and unsafe working conditions, and promote their rights, safety, equality, and dignity.

• Every year on June 2, the United Kingdom(UK)-based Non-Profit Organization(NPO), the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP), marks International Sex Workers’ Day to raise awareness of sex workers’ rights, with the theme focused on “Access to Justice.”

Background: 
Origin:  On 2 June 1975, more than 100 sex workers occupied the Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France, and launched an eight-day strike against violence, police harassment, fines, and imprisonment. The event became the foundation of International Sex Workers’ Day, which has been observed annually on 2 June since 1976.
First Observance : The first International Sex Workers’ Day was observed on June 2, 1975, commemorating the historic protest by sex workers in Lyon, France, and advocating for their rights and dignity.
