Cabinet Approves Ahmedabad–Dholera Rail Project; Nagpur International Airport Modernisation
In May 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, approved the Rs. 20,667 crore Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera Semi High-Speed Double-Line railway project of 134 kilometer (km) in Gujarat, the first Indian Railways (IR) project using indigenous semi high-speed technology upto 220 kilometer per hour (kmph).
- The Union Cabinet also approved extension of Airports Authority of India (AAI) land lease to MIHAN India Limited (MIL) beyond August 2039, enabling GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) to operate and modernise Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur Maharashtra.
About the Approvals:
Railways: CCEA approved the project under the Ministry of Railways (MoR) at an estimated cost of Rs.20,667 crore with completion targeted by 2030–31.
Airport: The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved the modernisation of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (Nagpur) under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model along with extension of Airports Authority of India (AAI) land lease beyond 6 August 2039.
India assumes chairmanship of global IT security standards body CCDB
In May 2026, India assumed the chairmanship of the Common Criteria Development Board (CCDB) for two years from April 2026 to April 2028, the leadership position was confirmed during the 1st Quarter Meeting of the Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA), held from April 14 to April 16 2026, in Tokyo, Japan.
- A prestigious responsibility reflecting the nation’s growing role in international Information Technology (IT) security standards development
Framework: Under the CCRA, member countries accept each other’s IT security certificates without re-certification, enabling seamless global trade in secure IT products.
India’s Role in CCRA: India has been a member of the CCRA since 16 September 2013 as a Certificate Authorizing Nation, represented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate as the official body for IT security certification in India.
Tripura Becomes First State to Complete All Priority Areas under Deregulation Phase–I and II
In May 2026, the Government of Tripura became the first state in India to complete all priority areas identified under Deregulation Phase–I and Phase–II reforms aimed at improving ease of doing business and reducing regulatory burden.

Indian Army & Indian Navy Sign MoA on Affiliation to Strengthen Inter-Service Cooperation
In May 2026, the Indian Army (IA) and Indian Navy (IN) signed a Memorandum of Association (MoA) on Affiliation in New Delhi, Delhi, to strengthen inter-service cooperation, operational cohesion, and jointness among the armed forces.
- The MoA was signed by Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) VPS Kaushik, Adjutant General of IA and Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Chief of Personnel of IN.
About MoA Between IA & IN:
Objective: The agreement aims to institutionalise structured professional exchanges, operational familiarisation, joint activities, and coordinated multi-domain operations between the two services.
Operations: The initiative supports future-ready multi-domain operations, rapid decision-making, cross-domain coordination and enhanced protection of territorial and maritime interests.
Significance: The cooperation will facilitate future inter-service affiliations and establish broad guidelines for affiliation activities between the IA and the IN.
India Hosts Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai, Maharashtra
In May 2026, India hosted the Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 from 11-14 May 2026 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, under its 2026 Chairship, with Suchindra Misra, Special Secretary, Department of Commerce (DOC), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), serving as the official KP Chair for 2026.

About KP Intersessional Meeting 2026:
Membership: KP currently comprises 60 Participants representing 86 countries, with the European Union participating as a single bloc, and the meeting brought together member countries, the World Diamond Council (WDC), and civil society groups.
Framework: Deliberations were based on the “3Cs” framework: Credibility, Compliance and Consumer Confidence, aimed at promoting responsibly sourced natural diamonds through international cooperation and dialogue.
Artisanal: Members also discussed socio-economic welfare, formalisation and regularisation of artisanal and alluvial diamond miners in producing nations.
Establishment: KPCS was established under United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 55/56 in 2000 to prevent conflict or “blood” diamonds from entering the legitimate global diamond trade.
Ministry of AYUSH Signs MoU with DIBD to Strengthen Multilingual Digital Healthcare Services
In May 2026, the Ministry of AYUSH(Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Digital India BHASHINI(BHASHa INterface for India) Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to strengthen multilingual access to Ayush digital services through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered language technologies.
- The MoU was signed by Dr. Subodh Kumar, Director, Ministry of AYUSH, and Amitabh Nag, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), DIBD in New Delhi, Delhi.
Key Details of MoU:
Initiative: Under the ‘BHASHINI Rajyam – A BHASHINI Sahayogi Program,’ the BHASHINI platform will be integrated with Ayush Grid portals, applications(apps), and AI-enabled services to provide digital outreach in all 22 scheduled languages of India.
Language & AI Development: The initiative will also support the development of domain-specific multilingual terminology systems, Ayush language datasets, and contextual AI models for healthcare and wellness communication related to Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Yoga & Naturopathy, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy.
About BHASHINI: It is a flagship initiative of the Government of India (GoI) launched under the Digital India Programme in July 2022 to provide seamless access to internet and digital services in Indian languages.
India’s First AI-Powered Combat Aircraft ‘Kaal Bhairava’ to be Manufactured in Portugal
In May 2026, Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace (FWDA), a deep tech defence company, announced that its flagship Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) ‘Kaal Bhairava’ will be manufactured at its first international production facility in Portugal.

Operation 777: The initiative is part of “Operation 777,” which aims to establish seven global headquarters across 77 countries.
Collaboration: The project is being developed in collaboration with SKETCHPIXEL, a European company known for advanced fighter jet simulation systems, including those for the F-16 aircraft.
Key Roles: Under the agreement, SKETCHPIXEL will provide simulation, AI integration, communication, and interoperability technologies, while FWDA will retain intellectual property rights over the core autonomous systems and airframe design.
Capabilities: Kaal Bhairava is an indigenous, designed, developed, and manufactured platform, engineered as a Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) autonomous combat aircraft with a range of 3,000 kilometer(km) and over 30 hours of endurance.
MoC&I: EU Emerges as India’s Third Largest Seafood Export Market in FY26
In May 2026, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I) announced that the European Union (EU) became India’s third-largest seafood export market during the Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26) after the United States of America (USA) and China.
- India’s seafood exports to the EU reached USD 1.593 billion in FY26, contributing 18.94% of total seafood export value with strong growth in value and quantity.
EU Compliance & Regulatory Measures:
Export Status: The EU retained India in its revised draft list for continued aquaculture exports beyond September 2026.
Regulation: India was included in the revised draft list under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2598 after demonstrating compliance with European Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/905 on antimicrobial use in food-producing animals exported to the EU.
Measures: To meet EU regulatory standards, India strengthened the National Residue Control Programme (NRCP), post-harvest testing systems, surveillance mechanisms for banned antibiotics and veterinary drug residues, traceability systems, and quality assurance frameworks.

UN’s GFG Report 2026: Fuelwood Demand Emerges as Major Driver of Global Forest Loss
In May 2026, United Nations (UN) latest assessment on the state of the world’s forests, titled “the Global Forest Goals(GFG) Report 2026” was launched during the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) at UN headquarters i.e. in New York, the United States of America. The report highlighted that rising demand for fuelwood (including woodfuel and charcoal) emerged as the key driver of global forest loss, particularly across sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia, even as countries expand restoration and afforestation programmes.
- Apart from rising fuelwood demand, the report identified agricultural expansion as the biggest cause of deforestation globally.
About the GFG Report 2026:
Prepared by: The report was jointly prepared by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the UNFF Secretariat.
Decrease in Global Forest Cover: The report revealed that Global Forest Cover declined from 4.18 billion hectares (ha) (in 2015) to 4.14 billion ha (in 2025), which represents an annual net loss of 4.12 million ha.
- The report highlighted that regions like: South America and Africa, recorded the steepest decline, losing 4.1 million ha and nearly 3 million ha every year, respectively.
Loss in Primary Forests: Globally, 16 million ha of primary forests, crucial for biodiversity conservation and carbon storage, were lost during the decade (between 2015 and 2025) with South America accounting for the largest share of losses.

In May 2026, ICICI Bank Limited in partnership with Visa launched India’s 1st USD-denominated debit card designed specifically for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) customers through its IFSC(International Financial Services Centre) Banking Unit (IBU) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- The new product aims to streamline global banking for NRIs by enabling direct access to USD savings while reducing currency conversion costs.
About India’s First USD-Denominated Debit Card:

Morgan Stanley Raises India’s GDP Growth Forecast to 6.7% for FY27
In May 2026, the American brokerage firm Morgan Stanley released its latest Mid-Year Outlook for India, revising India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for Financial Year 2026–27 (FY27) upward by 50 basis points (bps) to 6.7%, compared to its earlier estimate of 6.2% issued in April 2026.
Key Findings:
GDP: The report further projected India’s GDP growth for FY28 at 7%.
- Also, for the 1st Quarter (Q1: April-June) of FY27, India’s GDP is projected at 6.5% Year -on-Year (Y-o-Y) basis.
Inflation: As per the report, India’s inflation is expected to average 4.7% for FY27 due to higher production costs, a weaker rupee and knock-on effects on core inflation.
Global Growth Outlook: According to the report, global economic growth is projected to moderate to 3.2% YoY in 2026, compared to 3.5% in 2025, reflecting slower economic momentum across major economies.
L&T Partners with France’s Exail to Develop Unmanned Mine Countermeasure Systems
In May 2026, Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) entered into a strategic partnership with France-based Exail Technologies to deliver an advanced Unmanned Mine Countermeasure(MCM) systems for the Indian Navy(IN).
Key Details of MoU:
Unmanned MCM Suite: L&T and Exail will jointly provide the IN with an advanced unmanned MCM Suite featuring autonomous and remotely operated systems for safe detection, identification, and neutralisation of naval mines.
Key Roles : L&T will act as the prime contractor and offer the Unmanned MCM Suite to shipyards participating in the IN’s proposed programme for 12 Mine Counter Measure Vessels, while Exail will serve as the technology partner.

Russia Successfully Tests RS-28 Sarmat Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
In May 2026, Russia successfully conducted the test of the RS-28 Sarmat Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the north of Russia.
- Vladimir Putin, President of Russia described the newly launched Sarmat as the ‘world’s most powerful missile system’.
About RS-28 Sarmat:
Predecessor: RS-28 Sarmat, designated ‘Satan II’ by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), is intended to replace 40 Soviet-built R-36M2 Voyevoda missiles.
Payload Capacity: 35 meters (m)-long RS-28 Sarmat, which weighs over 208 tonnes, is capable of carrying nearly 16 independently targeted smaller nuclear warheads and 10 large nuclear warheads.
- It is also capable of carrying Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle, designed to escape missile shields by changing course mid-flight at extreme speeds.
Key Equipment: It is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs). It enables one missile to hit multiple targets simultaneously.
Strike Range: It has an estimated strike range of over 10,000 kilometres(km), while Russia claims its range can exceed 35,000 km.

Veteran CPI(M) Leader And Former MP Sudhanshu Sil Passes Away
In May 2026, Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) Sudhanshu Sil(Seal) passed away at the age of 81 in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB). He was born on March 27, 1945 in Calcutta, Bengal Province, British India (now Kolkata).
About Sudhanshu Sil:
Local Governance: He had a long political career spanning several decades, serving as a councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for five terms from 1990 to 2015 and as a Member of the Mayor-in-Council in charge of the Roads Department from 1990 to 2005.
Legislative Role: He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Jorabagan constituency, WB from 2001 to 2004

Karnataka Launches India’s First Integrated Portal for Monitoring NSQ Medicines and NDPS Drug Sales
In May 2026, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka, launched India’s first Integrated Technology-Driven Monitoring Portal to track Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) medicines and regulate Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) drugs, to strengthen drug surveillance, transparency, and public safety.
- The portal was developed by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) Department, under the Ministry for Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka .
About the Portal:
Objective: The portal aims to strengthen drug surveillance, transparency, accountability, regulatory efficiency and public health safety through integrated monitoring and mandatory recall of NSQ medicines that fail prescribed legal and quality standards.
Tracking: The system enables real-time tracking and automatic freezing of NSQ drug batches, prevents further sale of substandard medicines and supports faster recalls and regulatory action.
Integration: The portal integrates nearly 15,000 wholesalers and stockists initially, with plans to expand coverage to around 45,000 retailers and pharmacists across the supply chain.
Monitoring: Pharmacies dealing in NDPS medicines must upload patient, doctor and prescription details, enabling detection of excessive prescriptions, suspicious sales patterns and misuse of narcotic medicines.
